  1. Dominic Sessa was so wonderful, so natural, in "The Holdovers," so important to practically all of the decisions made by (his teacher) Paul Giamatti, including THE most significant  one, that he should have received his award more publicly.

I missed it, but for a mention in the interview with Da'Vine.

I think men have a hard time talking about their relationships all the time. I will be married 29 years in April and I don’t think we have ever had endless conversations about our feelings on every aspect of the relationship. These people don’t know each other enough to really answer these questions. Emily pushes too hard and Brennan is really closed off. Becca doesn’t push as much but Austin is also closed off. None of these marriages will make it and I would really like to know why these guys shut down so fast and so completely. Austin is going through the motions but he doesn’t have romantic feelings for Becca. Don’t know what is going on with Cameron and the heart problems.

Brennan and Austin "shut down so fast and so completely" because they knew immediately that their brides didn't and were never going to, how shall I put this, stir their loins.

The hot tub scene was painful to watch. Brennan wanted to be anywhere else. He will not touch or even smile at Emily.

Apparently Austin has decided to play his part with a bit more energy, including putting his arm around Becca. But he's phony, too.

  3. Best Supporting  Actor:

Realizing that the nominations must be narrowed to five, I yet think that one actor should have made the list, IDC who would then have been dropped!

Given Paul Giamatti is a serious contender  for "Best Actor" awards and did win a GG, IMO a major reason is the actor who shared 90% of Giamatti's screen time, and 9% of the screen without him. His character evinced that maddening, puzzling, and poignant moment of boyish immaturity on the brink of maturity, but not quite there. He accomplishes the feat, more than I think Giamatti's teacher does, at the end of having us wonder what will become of him.

An actual Deerfield Academy student when chosen to play Angus Tully: Dominic Sessa.

  4. Re: Actresses.

1.) Michelle Yeoh, in accepting her Oscar last year, made a wisecrack about the musicians' hustling her off with music at their own risk. Somebody thought it was memorable and funny enough to repeat this year. It was neither.

2.) Da'Vine played yet another variation on "The Big Black Nurturing Female Domestic," a cinema favorite since "Gone With the Wind." But instead of working for a wealthy White family, she works for several  in the kitchen of a private academy. Just as Octavia Spencer won an Academy Award for "The Help," Da'Vine will win for "The Holdovers."

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammy_stereotype

3.) Lily Gladstone. Native American. Instead of one accepting the Oscar for a White man (Marlon Brando), the Academy will seize this unique opportunity to see to it that a NA woman will get to accept her own.

The Academy Awards have always been about more than sheer performance.

Yes, I’m aware Lily won the GG for Drama. But from most forecast and odds, Emma still leads the pack. It’s an unconventional role with unconventional acting, and from most accounts, Emma is well-liked within the academy and industry. But Lily would provide the Oscars a nice story too, especially after Michelle’s win last year.

I do hope Margot gets nominated for Best Actress along with Emma. It’s about time we have more than one comedic performance competing for the top acting prize. The Actor looks dark and grim with Leo, Bradley and Cillian leading the way.

Was Brendan really an upset? I thought he had it long in the bag early in the season. The GG loss was because of a sexual harrasment issue that Brendan personally had with an HFPA exec. But all other awards after GG, Brendan swept. Poor Colin couldn’t even hack it in BAFTA where you would think the voters would be the most favorable and friendliest to him.

Austin Butler won GG and BAFTA. Brendan won SAG and Critics Choice.

"Elvis" had 8 Oscar nominations. "The Whale" wasn't even nominated for "Best Picture." Brendan wasn't the unanimous favorite.

His Oscar win was simply the flip side of his GG loss. But his sentimental  journey is over now.

    As for Best Actress:

It’s the year 2024, and you would think we would have evolved from boobies jokes by now. But no. Especially on a movie that cuts right through those types of jokes. There were a lot of funny, good-natured jokes that can be made about Barbie the movie, but he went for the gross low hanging fruit. I was cringing through the entire monologue. When that sushi joke didn’t land well, and mind you, that’s already the least offensive part, I knew it was going to be a tough 10 minutes.

I’m Filipino so I’m familiar with Jo Koy. His schtick was funny at first, but when he didn’t evolve from making fun of his mom and the Filipino accent, it got old really fast.  His movie Easter Sunday was full of Filipino stereotypes that I didn’t finish the movie.

Yes, he’s not with the “in” crowd, like Kimmel, Fey/Poehler were. And he’s not cool and suave enough to pull of Gervais’ “I don’t give a shit” schtick. But to be an effective host, you gotta mix the jokes with some self-deprecation. It’s what made Amy Schumer’s bit on the three-host Oscars effective. She made fun of herself enough that people can laugh along. Instead, he doubled down by blaming the writers, and saying he didn’t get the gig till late. Blaming others when the jokes didn’t land, regardless of who wrote them, aren’t going to endear you to the crowd any further.

Other than that, there were no major surprises for me. Cillian and Emma seems like they have locked up the major acting categories, unless Lily can make a heck of an awards campaign. Although I can see an upset by the French actress in Anatomy of a Fall. For picture, it seems to be a two-way race between Oppenheimer and KOTFM, with Oppenheimer way ahead. I’m sad that my little-film-that-could, Past Lives, will go home empty handed, although I’m rooting for a writing win for Celine Song.

It feels like a predictable awards season. I don’t see any races that will come down to the wire, ala Cate vs. Michelle last year, or a last minute surprise, ala JLC overtaking Angela Basset by the last two weeks.

Lily Gladstone won the GG for Drama. She will win the Oscar.

The upset last year was in Best Actor.

What a surprise, Oppenheimer won. Christopher Nolan seems really pretentious to me. I’m happy that he let his female counterpart do the speech though. I really like Emily Blunt so I’m happy she’s in a winner, but the lead actor looks like he’s made of plastic. His face is so smooth and shiny and fake looking.

I’m ticked that Barbie was pretty much shut out. It was bad enough that the movie couldn’t just exist without constantly being paired with and compared to Oppenheimer.

Too bad the Best Animated Film people weren’t there; it’s such an honour and usually a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Did they think they wouldn’t win? I mean, frickin’ Taylor Swift managed to squeeze this event into her schedule and there was no chance she would win.

The show was awkward and painful for the most part, which is a shame because the GGs used to be my favourite award show. I like the mixing of tv and movies and that there aren’t any “boring” awards (sorry, not sorry).

Terrible host, terrible bits written for the presenters, half the people there looked like they didn’t want to be there. I think they needed a longer cocktail hour before the show or something.

Re: Cillian Murphy. Never before have I read such a negative description of his stunning bone structure and complexion, never mind his eyes, nor his being referred to as some nameless "lead actor."

Re: "[P]aired with and compared to 'Oppenheimer'." This was a deliberate move by Margot Robbie as producer:

    https://www.slashfilm.com/1463132/oppenheimer-producer-margot-robbie-movie-barbie-release/

She made a bad bet, as it turned out.

I knew there would be cringe, but they out did themselves.

I am not sure why I watched this.   I firmly believe everything  in Bachelor Nation is fake and manipulated.   I know there have been a few that have worked out, but most people are there for their own reasons.

A few thoughts -- her dress.  Corpse bride was spot on.   I really don't like to be so harsh but these guys signed up for this.  We are not all going to gush and think everything is beautiful.

I have been to a real life wedding like this.   I thought what  I thought but  I kept those thoughts to myself because they were nice people, doing what they wanted to do and i was happy for them.

But Gerry and Treesa sold their souls for this fiasco, so I do not feel bad about my comments or anyone else's.

What is up with Theresa's hair?   It can look fine but then often it looks like a bad wig.   Nothing wrong if she has a wig or extensions but if that is what they are, they are very bad.     I don't know much about that kind of thing.   I wonder if she just has very coarse hair.  I feel like there is a stylist somewhere who can help her.

I thought Kathy looked great.   Better than she ever did on the show.    I know make up, lighting etc, can do wonders.

Trista went all in on the spray tan.

As for all of bachelor nation that was in attendance, they were all strangers to me.  I remember Trista and Ryan and the Mesnicks and that's about it, aside from the golden bachelorettes.

I bet some of them are embarrassed to be a part of this.

Part of me wonders if this was even a legal wedding.   And maybe they are going to have a highly publicized 'divorce'.    They are really milking this thing and i feel like a lot of the stories that leaked or broke, before the wedding were just to keep them in people's minds.   Otherwise a lot of us would have just forgotten about them and the wedding.   Oh i don't know but i don't put anything past shows like this.   lol

I'm pretty sure it was a legal wedding, and that no way in Hades is any split going to be "highly publicized," at least not on the network that wants us to not stop believin'!

I'm also pretty darn certain that not one person in attendance was "embarrassed" to be so. There's no crying in baseball, and there's no embarrassment in Bachelor Nation!

This is REALITY TELEVISION. Publicity, commercials, interviews, articles, sequels, prequels, anniversaries, major events, and home visits are not tangential, not "milking"; they ARE the genre, the definition, the irreducible quantity.

Jeopardy's Ken Jennings parlayed his wins into the esteemed hosting gig (and being a "Master Mind"), and nobody gives him grief. Athletes become TV show hosts in non-sports categories; is Jesse Palmer to be criticized? Perfumes, clothing lines, cookware, etc.---so many entertainment figures "branch out" of their niche both to make money and to stay in the public's eye with nary a peep of opprobrium. 🤫

So if in their 70s Gerry and Theresa want another grab at the brass ring of happiness and are willing to risk the slings and arrows of viewers of their Reality Show Merry-Go-Round, good for them. 🎠 🤞

Would I do it? Never! 🤪

But I also didn't  change the channel. 😉

OK, but as I wrote in another post, even the Pope/Roman Catholic church has come out within the past decade to say that it allows for the potential salvation of Jews without being converted to Jesus, although the Pope didn't really specify why and it has been called a divine mystery.  That's an interesting resolution!  So it's not just liberal Protestants.  YMMV.

    A source for your comment:

    https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2015/12/can-jews-go-to-heaven-vatican-reconfirms-yes.html

Luckily for me, I'm a proverbial "lapsed Catholic"! 😉

But I am a great admirer of Pope Francis, who, by this declaration, is hoping to remove any vestiges of anti-Semitism (aka, the doctrine of "forced conversion") from the faith.

But apparently  the concepts of Heaven and Hell differ between Catholicism and Judaism.

"I don't believe we've met. You are....? St. Peter? May I call you 'Pete'? I'm familiar with gated communities, but I kind of expected to arrive....well, nowhere, really. Or at least some place darker, given my behavior, you shouldn't ask. There's so much bright light here! I wasn't ready for....where am I, again? Heaven? Do you mean The Villages?"

There was an older gentleman in a tux standing behind the host Jesse Palmer, I wonder if that was Gerry's father? I assume he was at the wedding, I would have liked to hear from him. He seems blunt so maybe they were afraid to interview him live?

Not Gerry’s father. He wasn't able to be there:

  11. Back in the day, Kathy got riled at Theresa for the latter's TMI about her early "connection" with Gerry. Turns out both women knew right away that it was so. 😍 💍

Susan? Tone down the ABC hosting audition. Kathy's doing it better. 🎤 📺

Leslie? No regrets, girlfriend. You'll always have your Prince. 😉 🎸

Joey? Oh, Baby, I'll be there! (Why, he's practically my Homie, being from only two counties away!) 🥰  😄 🌹

Really there’s only so much gravitas a sponsored televised wedding can muster. If anyone thought they’d tune in for Southern elegance that was a huge mistake.
It was the carnival I expected. No disappointment here.

Not quite sure what "Southern elegance" means, but I also am not quite sure what "carnival" means here, either.

Re: Treesa's gown. I've opined on how the "Virginal Bride" look was completely wrong, given that the entire premise was how love could yet be found the second time around,  so about the "Mermaid" style in particular:  Not a good look for any actual human. An off-white "body-con" dress of "day length" would have shown Theresa's fit frame just fine.

  13. What? No "spontaneous" Groomsmen Dance?! No Removal of the Bridal Garter?! No "cute children" cavorting?! No faces smeared with wedding cake?! No staggering Drunken Uncles?! No cringe-worthy speech by the Best Man?!

Such a lack of dignity, I'm tellin' yas!

The Bachelor franchise isn't known for dignity or class, but they've dialed up Trash TV to 11. Oh well, a free, camera whore wedding, $40,000 ring, all-expenses-paid honeymoon in Italy, TV salaries and future "influencer" money. I guess there's an upside to however long this marriage lasts.

Call me Ms. Trash, because those perks sound pretty dang sweet to me! (Free trip to Italy? Yes, please!)

I trust you didn't watch any weddings of the British Royal Family? 😆😆😆

There is no dignity here.  They are acting like idiots getting married in Vegas.

I truly do not understand this comment, if you refer strictly to Theresa and Gerry. Yes, there were some nervous laughs on the bride's part, and Gerry’s  vows were a bit too "Season recap," but I thought the vows part was otherwise pretty on point.

Hey, at least we didn't get Stripper Couture as many modern wedding gowns resemble.

  16. Mes amis!

We are gathered here tonight to witness the marriage of Gerry (Indiana!), Widower Extraordinaire, and his Treesa, She of the Calming Hand and Head for Finance. A joint venture of Reality TV, by Reality TV, and for Reality TV. Thus, by the power invested in ABC, commercials will be shown, family will speak on camera, the Unchosen will "smile," and the Officiant will do Improv.

    God bless us, everyone.
