One cookie that I haven't had since I was a kid is my mom's chocolate no-bake cookies. I don't make them now because they are so finicky. Cook them too long, they crumble, not enough and they are gooey
lol! Right. Sorry--you don't bake them, but you do have to cook the batter on the stove top for a precise amount of time after it starts to boil. Mess that up by a minute and you're pretty much screwed.

Trader Joe's now has Cookie Butter Ice Cream.
Oh. My. God. I must try this.
Today, we stopped off at our local specialty ice cream shop, Carmela's Ice Cream and Sorbet, for a rare, expensive, high calorie treat. They have a few regular flavors, then some that they change out from time to time. This was today's menu:
Signature Flavors:
Salted Caramel
Brown Sugar Vanilla Bean
Dark Chocolate Cacao Nib
Lavender Honey
Mint Cacao Nib
Current Flavors:*
Rose Petal
Earl Grey Tea
Strawberry Buttermilk
Cucumber Sorbet
Raspberry Rose Sorbet
Blackberry Vanilla Bean Sorbet
Intelligentsia Espresso
Peaches 'N' Cream
Lemon Verbena Vanilla Bean
Cantaloupe Sorbet
The italicized ones are my favorites. I love caramel, but I'm not a big fan of salted caramel, which seems to be a new thing over the past couple of years.

But you say you like them otherwise. Maybe pizza places have exceptionally gross and sweet ones? My place where this happened is Big River Brewery.
lol! Could be :) I suppose it could've been a sweetened ricotta, but I don't know why anyone would do that on a pizza. I'll definitely ask if we ever go again (because their cheese and cheese w/pepperoni was delicious as were the pasta dishes (well, according to me and the kids--my husband wasn't too impressed).

Thanks, AntiBeeSpray. I looked on the site and didn't see it. I'll check DISH Network again by using their search engine.
-
I couldn't find it anywhere. I have DISH Network and there are about 4 different PBS stations and none of them listed it. I couldn't find any information on the website, either--everything there was listed the same as it was on the DISH guide.
I'm bummed.

but then comes the 'scooping the dough out onto the cookie sheets and baking them one sheet at a time' part and oh god life is too short for this.
For me, it's cupcakes. At least cookie dough is firm. Trying to drop liquid into all of those cups is so messy and tedious!
The cowboy cookies sound like what a friend of mine calls "everything but the kitchen sink" cookies. They're pretty good.

I wonder if there are certain ways around that now because there have been a few (rare) times when I've seen one who's obviously younger than 6 months. Not newborn, but definitely younger than usual.

I suppose it could've been the crust. I'll ask next time I go back, which could be a while since my husband didn't care for any of what we ordered and there are places closer that we all like.
I forgot to address the cheddar cheese on pizza: The only time I ever saw that was in grade school and the first time I saw it served, I thought "ew". Then I tasted it and thought "ew." Of course, it wasn't just the cheese that made it taste bad.
Also, tying this into Childhood Favorites--it's not fancy, but we grew up on Chef-Boy-R-Dee pizza and to this day I still love it.

I don't remember seeing figs on the list of toppings and I didn't see anything other than the white cheese, basil and sun dried tomatoes.
-
I'm one of those weirdos who think that things can get too sweet, so I wasn't too impressed with the peanut butter brownie oreos. Lemon oreos sound delicious--I'll have to look for them. I like my chocolate chip cookies chewy.

I have a question for those of you with good, experienced palates that's more about food than pizza, but since the ingredients did form a pizza, I'm going to ask it here:
I bought a slice of a specialty pizza, called a White Pizza from a local pizzeria this weekend. I don't recall the exact cheeses used (and the website doesn't have the ingredients listed--it was only at the restaurant), but the choices for all of the pizzas are: Mozzarella, Feta, Riccota and Goat cheese. It also had fresh basil and sun dried tomatoes sprinkled on the top. Here's why I didn't like it much: Something in it was sweet. Really sweet. I know that mozzarella and ricotta aren't sweet, I've had a limited number of dishes with Feta, but I think I remember it being somewhat strong and I don't think I've ever tried Goat cheese before. The sun dried tomatoes were a little on the sweet side, but nothing like what I was tasting. I also love sun dried tomatoes, so I've had them a lot over the years and never tasted sweetness in the dish before. When I ate the basil separately, I didn't detect any sweetness. Any idea on where it was coming from? Maybe a combination of a couple of ingredients?

I love chocolate chip cookies, ginger snaps, sugar cookies and peanut butter cookies. For store bought, Milanos, Oreos (although, I may be the only person in the world who doesn't separate them and eat the cream first) and Animal Crackers (do those count?). Also, Thin Mints and Savannah Smiles.
One cookie that I haven't had since I was a kid is my mom's chocolate no-bake cookies. I don't make them now because they are so finicky. Cook them too long, they crumble, not enough and they are gooey--it's like an exact science. I've tried other recipes for the same kind of cookie, but none have tasted as good as moms.

One of our cheer leading songs in high school was "I'm Free"! I still remember parts of it, too.

OOC
OOC?
I can understand complaints about lack of people with disabilities. I do think many shows have a lack of diversity and I have no problem with people who have issues with that, it's the other stuff that people look at and say "well, that could never happen, so I'm not going to watch it." Commenting or rolling your eyes is one thing, but dismissing it altogether and not giving it a shot--well, I don't get it. You could be cheating yourself out of some enjoyable entertainment.

Yeah, I'm tired of seeing scenes of men talking while at the urinal. Taking a conversation into the bathroom is one thing, but I'm perfectly fine with not seeing them peeing. Same thing with seeing someone sitting on a toilet.

I'm not saying that women never experience the fake pregnancy, but tv makes the women seem stupid about their own bodies. Stupid and not inclined to find out what's going on, even with the Internet.
Or how about the women who are so upset that, for whatever reason--usually menopause--that they can no longer bear children? I haven't started menopause yet, but a friend went through it a while back and she was ecstatic to not have to deal with a period anymore. I'm about at that point myself--can we please just get this over with?! Also, we knew we only wanted two kids, so when our 2nd was born, my husband had a vasectomy a couple of months later. Then, a few years ago, I had a procedure that I was warned would make it impossible to have any more kids. Ok...and? The only tv person I can think of who didn't care that she was starting menopause was Claire Huxtable, but in their case, they always had the "We had 5 kids because we didn't want 6 and those we do have we want out of the house as soon as possible." attitude :)

Roseanne and Everybody Loves Raymond both did episodes about PMS. I wasn't thrilled by them; they seemed to confirm the sexist stereotype that women turn into psychos every month.
Although, I did like parts of the Rosanne episode where Darlene got her first period. That was done pretty well, imo.

Does anyone here not particularly care for cooking and find yourself with about 15 or so different recipes that you keep recycling over and over? Just me?

My general stance is: as long as the characters make sense then I roll with the other nonsense. I tend to point and laugh at things that don't make real-world sense, but as long as there are richly drawn characters to watch I don't really care. I do get annoyed when a show's quality gets so bad that the characters aren't all that interesting anymore and I find myself being distracted by all the nonsense.
I have difficulty watching most cop shows with a straight face because most of them have as much relationship to reality as the Easter Bunny. But I just remind myself, "it's a drama, not a documentary". If I'm entertained, that's all that counts in the end.
Exactly. We're watching House right now and I think about every other episode, one of us will say sarcastically "Oh yes--doctors will do that", but we keep watching because so far, we're enjoying the hell out of it. It's entertaining, the acting is good and we're liking the stories.
I brought it up because I just heard about the show Scorpion (shows you how much entertainment news I read and how often I skip commercials :) and watched the 4:30 minute trailer and am really looking forward to it. I jumped on the forum to see what the early talk was and there's a lot of this or that wouldn't happen type of talk and it kind of brought me down a little (although, I understand the complaints about the lack of cultural diversity). Then I thought, heck with it--if its entertaining and the acting is good, I'm in. I've felt like that with most shows I've watched over the years.
As for not mixing reality with entertainment, thanks to DVRs, my kids' new mantra is now "Mom, can we please get through an episode of this show without you pausing it for a warning or teaching moment?" Movies and tv are our main and favorite form of entertainment, so I try real hard to make sure they understand the difference (especially since you can't escape sex and/or violence in almost anything these days.)

Thanks, DollEyes. It just so happens that we were getting a free HBO preview this week, so I'll record it and if the teacher does ask permission, then we'll watch it together. Also, I don't want you to think that we shelter our kids--we talk a lot about what's happening in the world and history, but it's whether or not the images are too much at this age.
Let me get back on topic: Princess Sparkle mentioned comedy performances and I agree that they shouldn't be dismissed (I loved Alicia Silverstone in Clueless for the same reasons you mentioned). I thought Marissa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny was brilliant.

I'm not sure how unpopular this is, but here it goes: It's just tv. I'm willing to give a lot of leeway to people who complain about lack of cultural diversity because they may have a point and a little leeway to complaints that something is out of character, but I don't care if something would or wouldn't happen in real life. If it's entertaining, and well written, that's all I care about. If I cared about whether or not something was realistic, then I would sit back and reflect on my own life or watch the news.

The only one I can think of right now (and I'm sure more will come to me later) is Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne:
I thought it was: Millions of people, live in fish bowls (which didn't seem too weird to me because I lived in a town of around 2000 people and we always said it was like living in a fish bowl--everyone knew everyone else and their business).
What it really is: Millions of people, living as foes.

I love sea urchin (uni) it's delightful stuff, give it a try sometimes ShannonL.
I've noticed that with some types of sushi, it's a texture thing: I don't like roe or the raw shrimp because of the texture. I hear that the green stuff in the lobster tail is sometime eaten on crackers-I tried once, but again--texture. Yuck. Just looking at the oysters makes me think I couldn't eat them. What is sea urchin like?
As for sweets: My family has a banana bread recipe that I have to make only on special occasions because I'm all over it when it's in the house. Can't get enough of it. Also, cake and cupcakes. As long as it's not carrot cake with raisins (I hate raisins) or cake with coconut frosting (texture issue!), I'll keep eating it until it's gone (dessert after lunch, snack time, dessert after dinner....I can't have cake--or my family's banana bread--in the house)

Sorry to go off topic, but there isn't one for my question and there's no need for a new topic. I'm putting it here, because the movie won Best Picture, so there has to be some great performances in it:
I need your opinions. My 8th grade daughter said that on Back to School Night next week, her history teacher is thinking of asking parents permission to watch 12 Years a Slave. I know I should watch it and make up my own mind, but I get way too emotional over movies like that and, while I understand how important they are, I just have to wait until I'm sure I'm ready for them. My daughter's a pretty strong kid emotionally, but, is 13 too young for this movie no matter what kind of kid you may have? What would you say to the teacher?

I thought that didn't sound right when I was typing it. I'd forgotten all about Sondra coming out of nowhere.
