I can understand those points, too, JBC344--they make a lot of sense. I think her being pregnant is what is swaying me a little bit more to the "forced" aspect of it. Like I said in an above post, I would be scared to death about what she'd do to a baby if I left. Not once did I get the impression that this child was more than a bargaining chip. Maybe at one time in their relationship, they really did want a child and would have been thrilled to be expecting, but at that moment, it wreaked of manipulation. Another thing that might be making me want to think of Nick as being a little more innocent (but not completely) is that I knew someone in high school who I wouldn't put it past to do something similar to this. Not that extreme, but definitely destroying someone by lying about sexual misconduct.
I'm thinking I'll see this movie again--there was so much to take in, I might have missed something important. I need to make sure I got all of the little nuances.
As for Rosamund Pike looking like Emily Van Camp, I can see that. When she was disguising herself as plain looking, I thought she looked like Laura Linny. I also thought that the actress playing Margo looked a little like Janeane Garofalo and a little like a young Justine Batemen (during her Family Ties days).

The meeting scene, engagement scene, his interview scene, her return home when she faints, and finally their last interview with Missy Piele was Nick and Amy putting on a show for themselves and everyone else.
Having only seen the movie, I didn't get that he was putting on a show for the same reason she was. The meeting and the engagement scene, to me, were witty and playful, not at all out of the norm (of course, I'm married to a witty, playful person). As for the interview and her return home, I figured that he really didn't have a choice. This (now pregnant) woman is capable of getting away with murder and everyone believes the sweet, innocent act. When she returned home, he didn't really have a choice to say "Oh, for God's sake, you bitch, what did you do now?" As for the interview, the FBI has closed the case, so accusing a sweet, innocent woman after the horror she'd been through wouldn't have gone over well, either. And if she's capable of doing what she did to the other men in her life? Talk about being between a rock and a hard place.
I'm not saying that Nick is the sweet and innocent one--I can buy the above mentioned notion that they were playing a game when they met and continued to play it throughout the marriage until it got old and they ended up resenting each other. I just think that she took things so far that he ended not having much of a choice but to play the game with her.

I also couldn't tell whether the authorities' meagre investigation and easy acceptance of her story - which stunk to high hell - was meant as a searing indictment of how media taints impartiality. Amy had been cast as the victim, so whatever she says is the truth, no matter how many holes and inconsistencies are in her story.
That's a good point--I hadn't thought of it that way.
I could buy creating the perfect frameup after planning it for years, but the on the fly successful framing of Desi and lack of investigation by the cops really bothered me. I would have even appreciated an explanation that Desi didn't have an alibi rather than just dropping any discussion.
Something that simple would have made a big difference for me, too.
I also had a problem with the dried blood not being washed off, but it was dramatic and one of the very few minor things wrong in what was otherwise a great movie, imo.

"....And that is where Ben Affleck's sweet spot is."
Yes. Based on how I felt when watching it, they nailed his character in the movie. Thanks for the link! I'll read it as soon as I can.
After all, he now knows to what lengths Amy will go when she doesn't get what she wants.
Right. That's another thing that I remember thinking when it was over.

I have a question for anyone who didn't read the book -- what did you think of Nick? Did he come across as intelligent and conniving to you, like Amy did? Did you feel bad for him? Did you think he'd killed Amy?
I felt a little bit of everything about/for Nick. At times sorry for him, at times thinking he did it, I felt bad for him, I hated him.....I think that's why the movie worked because in the beginning, it kept you guessing, in the middle, you felt bad for him (even though he had an affair--that's horrible to do to your spouse, but it's not a death penalty offense), yet at the same time, you saw how conniving he could be with the cat and mouse aspect of the "game" once he figured her out.
I did wonder if those that didn't read the book would get that Nick for all intents and purposes was just as attracted to Amy's "crazy" in the end as he was to pretending to be the perfect person/husband for her.
Gosh, I don't know--there was so much to wrap my brain around I wonder if I should see it again. I didn't get that he was attracted to her crazy, just that he wanted her to know that he was on to her and was going to do what he could to have her discovered. I also didn't get the impression that he wanted to stay with her for reasons other than the baby. I thought he felt he had no choice because (and maybe this was my own thoughts interjecting themselves where they didn't belong) if she was psycho enough to do what she did, what would she do to an infant if he left her? I think I'm either going to have to see it again or wait several months and try to read the book.
This brings me to something that's been bothering me: Why did the FBI drop the case so fast? Nick said "How did she get the box cutters if she was tied up?" and the police woman asked her about the Punch and Judi club. Both were legitimate questions. I know the story was supposed to end like it did (because he was addicted to her and it didn't come across well on screen?), but it still bugged me because I wanted her caught (I know--Hollywood ending, but sometimes I like them).

John Stamos comes pretty close.
When I was younger, sure. After reading something about a blogger who did an interview with him and said he was a jerk... not so much now.Ah. I'd never heard that about him :(

I think the reason I have a problem with oysters is because of a bad experience with clams. I got one once that wasn't thoroughly cleaned out and it was gritty, so ever since then, if I order clams, I make sure they've taken the stomach off. Ever since then, I see something with a shell and I think "stomach=grit" ::shudder::

Breaking Bad-. Sorry, I don't care how hypped up it was or how many awards it won, I just could not bring myself to watch a show that glorified and conjured sympathy for someone who produced one of the nastiest mind altering substances ever concocted-to say nothing of all the poisons produced by the waste! No sale for me.
This is the second time I've heard this and I honestly am not seeing it. I'm on Season 3 right now and it's an ugly, gritty, nasty look at the world of drugs and what they can do to you. The whole gang was somewhat amusing at first, but it didn't take long for it to go downhill for them. None of the characters are likeable, although there have been brief moments of sympathy here and there for two or three of them. In fact, my husband stopped watching it because there was no one to root for-they were all horrible (the characters, of course--the acting really is pretty good). I've even said that if I thought for a minute that most teenagers wouldn't think that this was made up to make it look worse than it is, I'd suggest that they watch it just to get an idea of how ugly it can get. I'm in recovery--21 years now--and have lived in Los Angeles and surrounding areas for about 25. I've heard and seen a lot of stuff, but I'm not afraid to say that I could be way off base about all of this.
Again, like I said in another post--this isn't a "Convince Me" thread, but I just don't see this as glorifying anything or trying to garner sympathy for any of them. However:
No Breaking Bad or Weeds because they are about drugs, and I think the current spotlight, even when it shows how bad it is, makes it inadvertently attractive to stupid people.
I suppose romantic idiot has a point :)

stillshimpy, I tried Uni last night. There were no small pieces to choose from--the restaurant made them huge. Sorry to say, I didn't like it. I've had much worse, but, it's not something I'd order again. I thought the taste was funny and I didn't really like texture. But, I can now say that I have tried it.

Good luck, Rick! Let us know how it goes.
ETA: I just thought of what it was that motivated me to keep going in the beginning and not give up: I'd challenged my brother to a bet. $20 to the person who took off the most weight in 3 months. After that, we went for another 3. So, I guess if you can find a way to make it fun--betting a friend or family member, exercising with someone, taking classes at a gym (I like them for moral support and because they make me work--left to my own devices on the machines, I'd cheat myself), etc.....whatever would work for you.

Saw Affleck's (shower scene with Amy) but missed NPH's, when was that?
Right after she killed him, when she climbed off of him.

Another thing is to watch the amount of salty foods you are eating. I got bored with my usual meals/snacks, so I added a few new ones to my diet. My calorie intake is still ok, but I have to admit that one of them is a salty food and wonder if that's why I'm having a hard time taking the few pounds off that I gained over the summer.

Saw this last night with my husband and we loved it. I knew nothing about it going in except what I saw from commercials and trailers. I thought it was exciting and intense with just the right amount of humor. I never guessed the plot twist (which isn't a new thing for me, I tend to be clueless, but my husband is great at figuring out twists and he didn't see it coming), so I was surprised. The performances were fantastic and I'd like to add that Neil Patrick Harris impressed us--he was the perfect type of creepy.
Now, we just have to decide if we'll let our 16 year old watch it. He'd love the story line and we do allow him to watch certain types of R-rated movies (based both on the amount/type of violence and amount/type of sex scenes). My husband thinks it's ok (he's a really good kid), but I'm not so sure--I think it's a bit much.
All the hype about seeing AFFLECK DONG, I totally missed it.
All you had to do was blink and you'd miss it.
Speaking of Ben's physical being--you could tell he was in Batman training mode--his chest was huge. I don't think it was that big in Argo.
ETA: Is it safe to assume that we can stop putting things in spoiler tags now that the movie is out? A couple things bothered me, but I want to be sure that they can be out in the open now before I post them.

We missed the pilot, but watched this one and all of us about died laughing. All of the above mentioned lines were brilliant and I'd like to add the moment he googled Triceratops, hit enter, then almost immediately "Oh my....delete, delete, delete!!" Perfect :)
We'll keep watching.

For a man in a suit, I'm not sure anyone beats Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe) on West Wing.
John Stamos comes pretty close.

I think my biggest challenge is the keeping track of my food portions! I always intend to but never follow through...
If you can just make yourself do it for just 3 weeks or so, it will become a habit. Keep the measuring cups/spoons/food scale in a place where it's easy to grab them (mine are in the counter above where I put my meals together, so I don't even need to turn to get them).

---I don't think the reason Arrested Development failed to catch on with a larger segment of the audience is that it was too smart. Honestly, I think it was too dumb, with a lot of ridiculously juvenile sexual innuendo, dopey slapstick and an obnoxious tendency to repeat the same gags over and over in every episode in the name of "continuity". It had its good points, but I think it's extremely overrated.
I don't think it's over rated because I loved that show, but I have to agree with everything else you said. Some things were smart, but all in all, it was a silly comedy. The thing that made it so good was the way the actors played off of each other.
While I, too, don't blame a network for cancelling a show, they do it way too early, imo. There are a few shows (MASH for example) that had horrible first season ratings and the network decided to give them another shot. Today, if it wouldn't been canceled after half a season and whether you like MASH or not, you have to admit, it was great for the network who gambled on it. Also, what's up with showing shows out of order? That's what got Firefly off to such a bad start, iirc.

Have you checked with a doctor? I'd do that first.
In regards to food, are you reading labels and measuring your portions? I was 206lbs at my heaviest and when I first started, I brought my caloric intake to around 1650. I walked everyday, starting with 20-30 minutes because it's all I could manage and extended it over time and about 100 sit ups a day (spread out over time, not all at once. I'd do sets of 25).
I wish I could tell you more because for me, that's all it took. Calorie count, portion control/measuring and exercising. Good luck and keep checking in with us.
I think we all understand how frustrating it can get. And remember it should be a slow process--make it a lifestyle change. The people that lose it too fast tend to put some back on.

Jumping out of lurking for a minute:
I also agree with Nina that the cape/hat ensemble was a 70's throwback. I think my mom had that pattern w/ the same "Annie Hall" looking model- cape, hat, boots. Only difference is the pattern showed the model wearing corduroy knickers (remember those?)
I thought it looked like a bad knock off of something Loni Anderson wore as Jennifer Marlow in WKRP in Cinncinatti--including the hat. (It's in an episode called "The Baby". If I knew how to screen cap, I would).

This was my morning:
For several weeks now:
Me: "Alejandro!"
Enrique: "Bailondo!"
(I don't speak Spanish, btw)
Today:
Me: "I'm getting bored with the songs on my iphone. I need new ones. I like that song Alejandro by Enrique, but I can't find it anywhere." On the search engine, I see Bialondo. "Oh, no....." Press the play button for a sample. ::headdesk::

Sometimes when we're going through the city, one of us will say "The lower east side...this really sucks." I could go on and on about that movie :)

That website has Canada Mints. I loved those when I was a kid. I can still buy them, but the texture is different now--they used to be just a bit softer. I don't want to say chalky because that sounds gross, but it's closest I can get to describe it.
Guess what I saw the other day? A Watchamacallit bar! I didn't know they still made those!

Aw, well hell. :) It doesn't surprise me, though, considering the rules for that kind of thing.
She's Got It: Favorite Female Characters
in Everything Else TV
· Edited by Shannon L.
Abbie Mills on Sleepy Hallow. She's a beautiful, strong, kick ass character.
All of the original four Designing Women for different reasons.
River and Zoe from Firefly.
Sarah Walker on Chuck (in spite of the increasingly ridiculous wardrobe). Another strong, beautiful, kick ass character.
Bailey Quarters on WKRP in Cincinnati. I loved watching her character grow from mousy, shy and nervous, to proud, confident and outgoing.
Abby Barlett, CJ Craig and Ainsley Hayes, on The West Wing. All three are smart, confident women.
I feel like Margaret Houlihan from MASH should be on this list, but she was never really a favorite of mine except for the occasional episode.
