Here's a doozy from Gloria Grahame Day.  The Cobweb.

The cable banner description reads like a parody of a real movie:  "The director (Richard Widmark) of a psychiatric institute presides over the crisis of selecting new curtains for the library."

I've seen this description on my DirecTV grid many times and always laughed but never watched it.  Until yesterday.

And improbably enough, I think "The director of a psychiatric institute presides over the crisis of selecting new curtains for the library" is spot on.

    What?  I loved her drapes.

Well I was definitely not expecting bonus time.

I was, because for two days my DirecTV online schedule has shown this show as 2 hours and 15 minutes.  So Jesse's "We've gotten permission from ABC to run long because everything is just too exciting" is a little much.

Rachel's face looks different.  Kind of puffy.  Please tell me it's not fillers.

I think you might have just solved the mystery. I too have an old receiver and its not connected to the internet.  I've started losing channels that have switched to HD - such as CNN, MSNBC, and another one.

The only way I can watch shit like Teen Mom and still be able to look myself in the mirror is knowing that because my DirecTV receiver has never been connected to a phone line or the internet, nobody has any record of anything I watch.

One thing about CNN--it comes and goes for me.  Like I'll tune it and it'll say I don't get it, but if I leave it on that channel, a few minutes later it appears.  It happens very intermittently, and usually at the same time it's happening with TVLand.

eta: I just scrolled forward in time to next Tuesday, and the episode is sitting right there. I can't figure out why it doesn't come up in search.

I have DirecTV albeit with an ancient receiver.  But lots of times I'll search for a show and it won't have all the showings in the list that SEARCH produces.  Like for tonight, it shows two episodes that start with "Teen Mom..."

One is Teen Mom: The Next Chapter at 7:00 eastern (I think this is a rerun) and one is Teen Mom: Young and Pregnant at 9:00 eastern (new episode, and they almost always show these only once).

But if I go to the schedule grid, there's a (presumably new) Teen Mom: The Next Chapter at 8:00 eastern, sandwiched between the two Teen Mom iterations the SEARCH function found.  And the schedule shows them re-playing this 8:00 episode at 10:00.  Neither of these appear in the list that SEARCH produces.

I've noticed the same thing when using SEARCH for Formula 1--the SEARCH list will include Practice 1 and Qualifying, but not Practice 2, even though Practice 2 is sitting right there on the schedule grid for whatever day it's on.

I have no idea why some are left out when I use SEARCH, but it definitely happens, and has taught me never to rely on it.

That is why I always use Bing theses days. I had so much trouble with Google tracking everything I did. Not happening with Bing search.

My understanding is that Bing does track you.  If you're content with the results you get from Bing searches, you could try using duckduckgo.com -- it appears to be based mainly on Bing and doesn't allow any tracking at all.

There are artists that create those songs and beats just for reality TV. So, they are specifically designed to sound the way they do but not cost the shows extra money.

Do people like the music?  Do they listen to the lyrics to see if it matches the tone of what's going on?  I mute it whenever it's on because I hate it so much, but the captions are still there so I can't escape it completely.

I don't know about you, but I'm so tired of the stupid music that they play on this show. It's obnoxious.

It's just awful.  I'm imagining that there's a whole industry that writes and records those horrid interstitial songs.  Plus they all sound exactly alike, but have different lyrics, which I know only because I watch the captions turned on.

And why, when Krysten was doing karaoke, did they play over it with their own show music and not let us hear her? I realize there are probably copyright issues, etc- but I was actually looking forward to hearing her sing

As you said, no doubt a rights issue.  But it annoyed me, too, because it's not like they HAD to show her singing.  Just leave it out.

While I get Morgan's anger at Binh's talking about their marriage and denying it, I kinda felt bad for him because he (like Justin) seems very unfamiliar with how to manage a relationship and it was written all over his face.

It's not like he didn't have any guidance.  Like, say, after the honeymoon incident, "Don't talk to any of the other couples about our issues."

I think what was written all over his face is that he had justified in his own mind why it was okay to talk to Justin about their issues, which in his mind meant he hadn't talked to any of the other couples about their issues.

It could be that it wasn't like the honeymoon, where he scurried off to tell Justin that Morgan was lying about being a nurse, but instead he and Justin were talking and the relationship issues came up.  But he still shouldn't have said anything if he wanted to respect Morgan's request/demand, which is what I think got Morgan so upset.  She told him not to do it, but he did it.  Seems pretty clear to me.

What he should have done is talk to his mother about their issues.  Morgan would have no basis for objecting to that, and she could learn a valuable lesson about watch out what you ask for.

  9. 18 minutes ago, Spectator said:

Side note: Morgan seemed to expect full forgiveness about lying to production that she wasn’t done with school, yet she is remarkably unforgiving about Binh opening up to his “friend” (albeit s new friend) about that lie. Give me a break.

    I re-watched their rose ceremony.

It was finally made clear that the problem wasn't that Binh told Justin that Morgan hadn't actually finished her BSN.  What he told him was that Morgan was lying about being a nurse, which is a lot worse, and obviously not true.

He told her, "We cleared that up.  You're working on your BSN, but you're officially a nurse."  So apparently what happened was that Morgan told Binh that she hadn't finished her BSN, and told him not to tell anybody.  Not only did he go tell someone, which she specifically asked him not to do, he got it wrong and told Justin that Morgan was lying about her actual occupation.

So I can see how she wouldn't want him talking to any of the other couples about any of their issues, especially if he's not even going to go to the trouble of getting his allegations right before running off to talk to other people.

What got me was that Binh told Morgan that the guys would talk about their problems, but that he told them, "Out of respect for my wife I'm not gonna talk about our issues"  And then talked to Justin about their issues, even though she asked specifically that he not go to any of the other couples with their problems.

And interestingly, she said she'd never gone to any of the other couples about their problems, and his reply?  "I'm sure you talk to Lindy."  Well, no she doesn't.  And even if she did, how does that make Binh talking to Justin turn into Binh not talking to Justin?  It doesn't.  And then he said he talks only to Justin, but then she brought up Miguel and he said he had indeed talked to Miguel, but that was in response to something about being a people pleaser.  So does he talk to only Justin, or has he also talked to Miguel?

The fact is that she asked him not to talk to any of the other couples, and he did it anyway.  But he has his reasons.   And because he has his reasons, he didn't do anything wrong.  But the question isn't whether he did anything wrong; it's did he do it?  And he indisputably did.

Yet he told Morgan he didn't.  That's where Morgan's (and my) exasperation come from.  Then when Morgan told Binh he's not owning up to anything, he said he'd apologized for the BSN stuff.  As if nothing since then was at issue.  Arrrgghhh.

And he did finally admit, "I definitely talked to Justin behind your back.  Multiple times."  And then said, "I apologize for lying straight to your face, multiple times."

Maybe Morgan had no right to ask him not to talk to other people, but that's a whole other issue.  She said in her prepared remarks that she wanted a husband who would always have her back, and that's not what she got.  She might have gotten over the honeymoon kerfuffle (although I have my doubts), but if Binh really wanted that result, he should have refrained from doing the very thing the honeymoon kerfuffle was all about.  Instead, he continued doing the exact same thing, and lied about it, and made Morgan press and press before he'd admit it.

As for asking Justin for advice?  If that's the best he could come up with, then maybe he should just give up on relationships entirely.  Mitch made me laugh during the after-show when he was asked some question, and he said, "As the relationship expert on this panel, my opinion..."

  10. Now that DirecTV has fixed my captions, I can watch the film noirs (films noir?) again.  I always watch Eddie's introduction and closing first, to see if I want to watch the movie.  Well, Saturday's offering, Hit and Run, sounded like a stinker so I passed.  However, I noticed that there was a lot of time left in that time slot, so I decided to see what they filled it with.

What a gift!  Shake Hands With Danger, showing all the mayhem that can happen when you're not careful around big Caterpillar earth-moving equipment.  It had a theme song, sung by a guy with a deep, dire voice, and a line like "That's why they call him three-finger Lou."

It was both hilarious and harrowing.  A guy falling from a really tall machine, shown plummeting to the ground and then lying mangled where he hit.  Another guy deciding to take a shortcut (never take a shortcut!) and grease this thing with a handful of grease instead of the proper tool, but it was parts that moved in opposite directions, creating a guillotine.  I had to cover my eyes as he inserted his arm in there, and they showed it twice.

But it was actually effective, showing there's a difference between telling a guy not to start the engine while you're down in there fixing something, and actually taking the key with you.  The guy gave a thumbs-up when you motioned that you were going in--what could go wrong?

All in all, an unexpectedly delightful 20 minutes.

All the soft drinks were self serve in one of those machines with seemingly hundreds of choices.  They use really small packets of syrup which must be constantly checked and/or replaced.  Well, all I wanted was basic Coke Zero.  It was awful.  I then tried Diet Coke.   It was ghastly.

Have you gotten diet drinks out of other Coke Freestyle machines and they tasted okay?  I ask because I can't speak to diet drinks because they all taste like shit to me, but the regular Coke in those Coke Freestyle machines doesn't taste like any other Coke, including Coke in bottles or cans or in "regular" soda machines.  It's not unpleasant like the acrid swill of diet drinks, but it's definitely different and in a blind taste test you'd never drink it and go, "That's Coke."

Reality Steve is now reporting that Nate's friends Pete and Dustin got such a huge amount of negative feedback for calling Nate's ex girlfriends "party girls" and saying Nate felt the one girl was not worthy of knowing he had a child, that they have closed down their pod cast.

To date someone for 1 1/2 years but to say she's not "worthy" of knowing he has a child, well that says more about Nate than it does about the girl.

For clarity--according to what you quoted, Nate isn't the one who said it.  His friends said Nate felt that way.  Who knows how Nate actually put it, if he put it any way at all.  Maybe they were just inferring that Nate felt she wasn't worthy based on the fact that he hadn't told her.

And actually, it wasn't clear--are Pete and Dustin from the Bachelor Nation, and not actual friends of Nate's?  If so, they weren't even around when Nate was dating this girl.  It makes me even more curious how they know how Nate "felt" when he was not telling her about his daughter.

Frankly, I don't think we know much of anything.  It appears that he had a relationship with this girl for a year and a half and didn't tell her he had a kid.  We don't know  the particulars of the relationship, which would be helpful because as many of us have said, how in the world do you keep a child's existence a secret from someone you dated for a year and a half?

The wild card in that is "dated."  We each have our own understanding of what "dating" means, which we're presumably imposing on this situation.  But we don't know what Nate's and this girl's individual understanding of the relationship was.  It still appears to me that they weren't on the same page.

Or maybe just sensible. It's always complicated interpreting documents of the past, and distressingly easy to misinterpret them in light of current sensibilities.

That's really helpful.  I'm terrible at sussing out subtext and cloaked meanings, so when I run across someone who claims to have done it, I can tend to give it credence just by its mere existence, figuring that I was just too dim to get it.  But that might not always be the case, especially in a situation like this.

    Thanks!

It can be a PITA to find though, if your employer doesn't offer it, and even then it might be a barebones plan with a really high deductible. I don't even want to describe how much I am freaking out because my son loses coverage next year when he turns 26, and one of his medications costs $3000/mo. He cannot work full-time due to his disabilities.

It's actually never been easier to find health insurance, because of the Obamacare Exchange (or states' versions of it), where you can see at a glance the premium, deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, and copays or coinsurance for every policy offered by every insurance company.  (Compare that to Medicare Supplements, where you have to contact each insurance company separately to see what they offer and how much it costs.)

Plus, nothing bought on an Exchange will be a barebones plan, because all policies included are ACA complaint.  And it doesn't have to have a high deductible, but of course the premium will be higher in order to get a lower deductible.

Lindy, in particular, could choose from a variety of plans, all under $200/month (29-year-old in San Diego).

And if she got one of these plans, she wouldn't have to pay the California penalty for not having health insurance, which is a minimum of $800/year, and more if she makes more than around $50,000/year.  Taking the $800 penalty she wouldn't have to pay into consideration, her actual cost for a $200 premium would be $133/month.

But the whole health insurance landscape is incredibly confusing, so I actually can't really fault her.  I just wish I had the opportunity to explain it to her, and to see if she'd make a different decision.

(it also bugged me that she, as a care provider, was saying “health care” when she meant “health insurance”).

Bless you, my friend.  Although pretty much everybody does it.

Lindy, like all Americans, can have all the healthcare in the world if she pays for it herself.  Nothing's stopping her from going to the doctor right now; she just has to pay the bill herself, no different from how she pays for pretty much all other goods and services she consumes.

Of course it doesn't help that the law is called the Affordable Healthcare Act, when it's actually providing only access to health insurance, which will be used to defray the costs of healthcare.  But still.

  20. I didn't think this was going to be my cup of tea, but I really enjoyed it.  I went because it was directed by the person who directed one of my favorites, Babe.

Maybe I'm a sap, but I really liked the part before the movie where George Miller thanks the audience for coming to the theater to see the movie.  Tom Cruise did it with Maverick, and I think there was another movie I saw that had it.  It makes me feel appreciated.

If people are dating, it's presumably with an eye toward merging their lives in some way, and whether one of them has a kid would be vital information.  As you noted, you don't have to introduce the kid to everyone you date, but all of them should know of the kid's existence.

Which makes me wonder whether Nate and this woman didn't exactly see eye to eye on the type of relationship they had.
