  1. Mario500, have you seen the Allegra commercial?  Here is a link if you'd like to review it.

This thread is about commercials that irritate and annoy.  I find this commercial annoying.  I don't understand how singing with an angry look on one's face is supposed to make me interested in Allegra's allergy medicine.

  2. So much good writing and directing in this episode.

When the ghosts were trying to contact Sam and Jay, Pete "translated" liquid stone for Thor and defended him when Trevor didn't immediately understand.  Moments later, Thor suggested, "Do FaceTime...is just one button" and then said Sam should update her IOS.

Pete's response, "Okay, you know FaceTime?  Are you messing with us?  I don't even know what's real anymore."

So smart.  Their back and forth about modern grammar and technology has been going on since season one.  Nice callback, writers.

Another small moment:  When Stephanie came into the room, Trevor crossed his legs and pulled down his jacket.  Asher Grodman is such an expressive actor.

Finally, I liked all the visuals of circles in this episode:  when the ghosts were looking into the well, when they were huddled around the phone during the FaceTime call, and even looking down at Flower encircled by the "walls" of the well.  Immediately before Hetty said she knew how to save Flower, she was standing outside of the circle and moved back inside it when she pulled out the cord.   I think that circle became a symbol of how friendship and family strengthens us when we work together to help each other.  Pretty deep stuff for a sweet little tv comedy.

I really hope they submit this episode for Emmy consideration.

  3. When Isaac was pretending to canoodle with Hetty in Thorapy, she urged him to kiss her neck.  (Just double-checked….it was her nape she wanted kissed….but it’s basically the same area).

I agree.  I think it was clear that she choked herself.  Hanging would leave different marks, but also not many rooms have any means of hanging oneself.  Also, Hetty didn't untie the cord from her neck, she unwound it.

I'm not picking up on what you mean.  If you're implying that she hung herself, see above.

The phone cord wasn't very long.  Back then, they didn't anticipate people walking around a room with the phone.  The phone stayed put, the cord was long enough to reach to the table.

Well...I was trying to be a little discreet.  The cord Hetty had wrapped around her neck was long enough to reach Flower at the bottom of a well, so it was longer than standard issue phone cords.

In the Hollywood Reporter interview, they do sumise that Hetty did commit suicide by hanging herself.  https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/ghosts-rebecca-wisocky-interview-holes-are-bad-1235877076/

  5. I've been noticing more negative comments about this season at another site.  Their complaints are similar to the article linked above.  I don't find this season particularly tawdry.

I think the writers have had a very limited amount of time (and episodes) to create meaningful arcs this season.  With the additional complications of two pregnancies to work around, I am not surprised the writing has changed a bit.

  6. Did they explain how Saul first attached to Gene?  Saul and Alberta are from the same era, so he must have died in the 1930s.  Gene was probably not born until the 1960s.

  7. I really hope Janine doesn't fold and return to the classroom right away.  She's blossoming at the district and doing a lot of good work.  I loved that moment when Ava started her normal nastiness towards Janine, and instead of taking it quietly, Janine held up her hand and said no.  It kind of reminded me of the first season when she told all the little guys on the bus to sit down.

I've been wondering if Quinta has an opportunity to film a big movie and is trying to find a way to creatively cut back on her screen time.  This shortened season, they've really been able to develop the other characters and explore other friendships within the staff.

Although Janine is a lead character, I think Abbott Elementary could still work if she wasn't in the classroom.

  8. Sorry to see the only slightly rootable (adult) character pay the price for her attachment to Elena.  Hopefully someone else will help Oskar.

I wonder what wild bait and switch finale we’ll end with next week. Will the whole thing end as one of Elena’s potato steam-induced fever dreams?

  9. I keep watching this even though it is incredibly weird and unsettling.

The staging of that last scene makes me wonder if it really happened or if it was all in Herbert's imagination.

  10. Did anyone else think it a little odd that Sam scolded Jay for being mean to Isaac when she was really rude (and only gave a half-apology) to the ghosts in the Halloween episode?  It just seems out of character for Jay and Sam in both episodes.

Maybe. Maybe not.  I was surprised that Da'Vine was nominated. She did less acting than Dominic Sessa (who didn't even receive a nomination) & Giamatta. My only memory of Da'Vine is of her sobbing or being depressed. She didn't have many lines, was only in a few scenes

Dame Judi Dench won her Best Supporting Oscar for 5:52 minutes (four scenes) in Shakespeare in Love doing some fairly straightforward work as Queen Elizabeth.  I imagine the only acting challenge for her was wearing the heavy costumes.  I think Da’Vine’s screen time and work were more than award worthy.

I agree Dominic Sessa should have gotten a nomination, too, but the Academy probably thought he’d have other chances in the years ahead.

I remembered Hannah and Yungsheng, but not the priest.  So of course he wins.

Did David wear his clerical collar when he competed before?  I remembered him because I'm Episcopalian and was rooting for the home team.

  13. Susan Seaford-Hayes'  reminiscing about favorite Doug and Julie scenes makes me remember a scene that happened 30 or 40 years ago.  Julie and Doug were not married, but for some reason ended up in an inn together.  After tons of sexual tension, Doug picked Julie up and carried her to the bed.  Does anyone else remember it?
