  1. I was interested after reading the Primetimer review  but it's already after 10 pm here, do you think they could have posted it a few days sooner?

I looked on Peacock and don't see the show.  Maybe NBC will put it there later in the week.  I do like Jesse L. Martin a lot and the premise sounds intriguing.

  2. I can't have a washer either, I live in a 1927 prewar building in Manhattan and my super - who is a really nice guy - told me that they just would worry too much about the plumbing.  I believe them, I have at least twice had bad kitchen floods which the handyman and I thought came from the dishwasher, but which actually came from a tiny hole in the ancient pipes.   I got coop insurance after having the kitchen flooded and having to compensate the person living below me.

During Covid I did buy a Laundry Alternative Spin Dryer which spins your clothes 90 percent dry, you would just have to find a way to hand wash first (I used a large bucket in the tub).  I prefer to use the laundry room generally but it works in a pinch.

But yes, my kingdom for a real washer dryer.

  3. Yes I think Peacock has a super cheap yearly deal every Black Friday.

I subscribed, actually re-subscribed to Sling when Disney took the ESPN channels off Spectrum during the US Open.  Of course now that the tennis is over, ESPN Is back.  Football rules.  However if my fairly cheap Spectrum plan (TV Choice) loses channels or becomes too expensive, I might  give it up for Sling.  The problem is that there are reports that if you try to go internet only, the price of your internet goes way up....so I will wait and see I guess.

ETA  I see I was responding to posts from Saturday - I don't know if it's my browser or if I go too fast through these threads, anyway, just adding to the randomness I guess!

  4. The Disney Spectrum fight has also prevented many people here in NY from seeing the US Open.  I decided to take out Sling Orange for a month at half price - $20 isn't much - and then will see how long this goes on.  I did add Hollywood Extra for $6 so I could watch TCM in case I make the switchover.

It's annoying but Disney is trying to force the cable customers to buy all their channels which we shouldn't have to do.  So I blame them.

  5. Okay Maddie is up a  break in the third.  I'm not watching live because I realize I just can't stand Sabalenka.   I really hope for a Coco Maddie final though I will probably feel torn as for which of them to root for.

During the delay Chris Evert mentioned a match at the US Open between Martina and her that was interrupted by some drunks having a "fight" in the crowd.  Then I remembered that I was actually at that match!  It was in 1981 I think.

What I remember was that the action stopped and the players were looking up confused.  It sounded like some drunk guys yelling "Go Chrissie!"

The security people got them out of there and after that I saw Bud Collins go over to interview the other people who had been sitting around them.

  6. I'm so happy right now for Ben Shelton!  What a year he's had, struggling since Australia and now making the semis of the US Open at age 20.

I don't have anything against Tiafoe, he seems like a nice guy but I have a feeling that Ben has the potential to be a great player and to actually win a major before he's done.  I had the match on without watching all the time (actually my TV sound dropped out for awhile) but I went over to see Ben serve it out.  Really exciting.

I switched over to Sling Orange having lost ESPN on Spectrum so I will re-watch the match on ESPN 3 tomorrow.  Congrats to Ben.

As far as the women are concerned, I was hoping for Ons to finally win a major but it didn't happen.  So I hope Coco will win.  Like Ons I think she is under a lot of pressure to win the big one, so I hope it happens for her.  I wasn't that surprised that she beat Penko, Jelena is bound to have ups and downs like that.

... & I could listen to James Blake talk all day long.

Chris Eubanks did some commentary for the Ben Shelton / Tommy Paul match.  I think he does an excellent job.  Of course he's also had his best year on the court as well, and it's great to see.  He seems like a great person as well.

  8. I saw Man's Castle ages ago in a revival house and remember really loving it, I am a big fan of Frank Borzage's work.

Loretta Young started in the silent era, I think at age 13 (!) in the Lon Chaney film Laugh Clown, Laugh.

  9. Right now I'm only able to watch the matches that are streaming on ESPN plus, I am seeing Ben Shelton's match.  Last night I was able to watch Medvedev only over the Spanish feed.

I am sure this is all Disney's doing, it's ironic to me because I really only watch ESPN for major tennis (all they show) and the NBA finals.   And I have no interest in their other channels, or in Hulu or Disney whatever streaming service.  Bunch of creeps at Disney.

I agree that the sick players ought to be tested for Covid but haven't heard any news on the issue.  I did read that both Mac brothers tested positive after John played an exhibition before the USO with some of the current players.

ETA:  For anyone else affected, I have found out that Spectrum will give you a one time credit for the missing channels ($15 apparently) if you go on their site and request it.  I went on chat and asked for the credit and the rep immediately said she had taken care of it.

Depending on how bad this gets I might take out cheap plan with Sling for the time being but if I can watch the later rounds even on replay I may wait. Crummy Disney.

I'd have lunch with Cannon, but he ate all the food.

Speaking of which, I was reading a really excellent article looking back on The Fugitive (the article was in a back issue of the magazine put out by the Film Noir Foundation, run by Eddie Muller of TCM's Noir Alley), and it mentioned, which I don't think I knew, that William Conrad provided the dramatic voice-over/narration for that show.  Interesting "six degrees" I guess you could say.

Speakin' of hot MD's...I saw a new Ortho foot & ankle specialist today and wow!! He could be in the movies. The 16 year old girl in me sighed & said, "Ooohh, he's soooo cute!" 😄

I used to have a very cute dentist, unfortunately he's semi retired now and doesn't come around the office much anymore :)

  12. Back early in the year I would get some really early morning calls from a doctor or doctor's office when I was having a lot of issues with my vasculitis (thankfully much more under control now).  I am *not* an early riser so would have to have the phone near my bed and be ready to lunge for it.

Now though I just try to keep an eye out for the little telephone symbol on my cell.  I haven't had a landline in ages but I do miss the bright red blinking light that told me I had a message.  Why isn't there an app for that?

Pet peeve:  Instagram is limiting the number of hashtag posts you can see to 9 top posts when you are viewing on a computer.  But there is no such limit on a mobile device.  What's up with that?  Is there anyway around it?  I have searched in vain for an override.  I'm trying to view the projects of people who have made a particular dress pattern I'm planning to sew.

@EtheltoTillie I just looked myself and the same thing happened.  I think this is a new development and I have no idea why they are doing it.  What has always bugged me about Instagram, among other things, is that you can't post any pictures of your own unless you use a phone or a tablet.  I post some of my photographs, but have put off posting a new one because I'd have to email the picture then retrieve it from my email to post it via my Ipad!

This is in addition to all the junk Instagram has added since I joined it.  I originally wanted to use it to look at photography and art, but there are not only a ton of ads but all these irrelevant "reels" aka videos, mainly of celebrities, that I really didn't ask for, but when you scroll past one you still get more of them!

Separate but related peeve:  I am so tired of having to update technology.   I bought a new Ipad last year because my old one, which worked fine, would no longer support all the apps, not even Gmail!   Now I am afraid that my 2012 Mac Mini is on its last legs and I may have to buy a new one.  It already can't use my Adobe Photoshop CS6 anymore (new OS doesn't support mine) and if another OS comes along I may lose Lightroom.  Greedy tech companies.

  14. My mother told me later on that she also wanted to restrict our TV because she noticed us "fighting" (verbally) more when it was on.  So maybe she thought it was over stimulating or something who knows.  We did enjoy a lot of other activities though, I loved art and my sisters took piano.

In spite of that, I do remember watching a lot of the old shows at the time one way or another.  I think that shows like The Fugitive and Green Acres hold up really well in their different (!) ways, as far as Perry Mason goes I never saw it at the time but have watched almost all of them since and really enjoy it.

We had a roof antenna up in the attic so never had reception problems, I remember moving to the city at 22 and the reception was awful until I got cable.  Now with the new digital transmission that doesn't happen to the over the air signals anymore at least here in Manhattan.

  15. We had kind of a strange TV situation growing up.   We had a nice TV, but we weren't allowed to watch it during the week  However we did always watch Star Trek on Friday nights, though that time slot probably doomed the show.

I do remember somehow managing to see Batman and also The Fugitive so either we sneaked upstairs or we watched the reruns in the summer.

Now I don't watch a lot of new shows except for some of the mysteries on Britbox and Acorn. I still have a fairly cheap  cable plan but just watch and record the shows over the Spectrum Roku app since my Tivo died.  I do have TCM so try to remember to record interesting films.

  16. In regard to the tipping discussion - I do tip, at least for taxis and waiter service, and housekeeping at hotels.

However, there is a way to handle it and a way NOT to.   I was in a modest coffee shop a couple of weeks ago (not really fancy although they have spiffed up the place lately) anyway I ordered a meal with coffee that came to 18.95.   The waiter brings me the check and as I am giving him $20 says "Do you want change?"

So either he thinks I am going to leave him a crummy $1.05 tip, or he thinks I'm going to stiff him?

I said quietly "No, I'll leave something".  Frankly I was embarrassed.

By the way I was paying cash due to having my credit cards hacked lately, but regardless, what kind of question is that?  I heard him ask it to the people next to me also.

  17. I think I mentioned this once before but I saw Psycho in college and it was soon clear to me where my limit was in watching violence in movies.  As in, it's very low.  I could watch an old movie where the violence is implied but even then I don't do well with it.  If it's in any way graphic though, forget it, I just can't tolerate watching.

Not sure if it should be here or in music, but I bought a record player on Prime Day and I’m now trying to build my collection.  My parents don’t have anything I could inherit save for an unopened soundtrack for Two of a Kind with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.  I’m 99% sure they had a Barbra Streisand record but they couldn’t find it.  So anything I really need to have?  I bought Thriller (though you will never get me to watch the video.  It gave me nightmares 40 years ago and will still do now) and a few compilations (Queen, Elton John and ABBA).  Anything else?  I’m thinking Joni Mitchell and Janis Joplin.  I really need women singers.

Joni Mitchell’s “Blue” and “Hejira” are great albums, whether you can get them on vinyl I’m not sure though.  I did read once that Mitchell said that some of her earlier albums had gone out of print.   Maybe those are available though.

  19. Well the great Hsieh Su-Wei also just won her sixth major doubles title, too bad ESPN was more interested in running a bunch of commercials than showing us the trophy ceremony.

  20. I feel really sad for Ons.  I hope she gets to have her day soon.  She went through so many tough opponents just to get there.

Really hope Carlitos can do it tomorrow.

Watched Alcaraz/Berrettini.  I like Carlos, but I like Matteo more.  He was able to pull off the first set but then made errors at inopportune times and couldn't capitalise on some of his chances.

I'm hoping Carlos makes it to the final as he is the one with the best chance to beat Djokovic.

Why is it that the top half still has more big names but the bottom half seems like people are falling all over themselves to get out of Djokovic's way?  Bottom half seems so much easier, particularly since Ruud at #4 wouldn't haven't been #4 if Wimbledon still took grass court performance into consideration.

I was sad for Berrettini also, though he has played so little this year that I guess it was bound to catch up with him.   Let's hope he has better luck staying healthy in the future.

Yes the draw is really disappointing in Djokovic's section.  He could have gotten the wildly unpredictable Alexander Bublik - who actually just won in Queens -  in the next round but instead will get Andrei Rublev, who I think has the kind of game that will not trouble Novak at all.  Just no justice sometimes.

Oh and I just have to join in on the big congrats to Chris Eubanks!  What a story. and for anyone who doesn't know he is also an excellent commentator on TC  -which he totally showed in his after match interview.
