LOL! When I think back to my teen years, I remember what kept me on the "straight and narrow" was my fear of what my parents would do to me if I ever strayed from the "good, law-abiding citizen" path. I don't recall ever worrying about law enforcement - it was always my parents!

This so much, which brings me to: what was up with Rory's 'TUDE when she was released from jail? Something more along the lines of the freak out she had over missing Lorelai's gratuation would have been completely appropriate but nope. That always stood out to me.

I know there's a delayed freak out but that never quite worked for me.

RORY: I know French, a bit of Spanish, but my Italian -- not so good.

LORELAI: Being trilingual is plenty for a young lady.

So, there you go. The show sort of adresses it and I recall Rory having a (very basic) conversation in Spanish with Esperanza, Emily's maid during her stay with the Gilmores in S6.

Do we even know if shes registered to vote?

Rory also loved to vote, according to Lorelai. That was part of her freak out when Rory was arrested, whether she'd be able to vote.

Maybe I am being a little harsh, but you have to be a really specific kind of person to be a foreign corespondent, and, I would assume, you would have to be REALLY passionate about what you are doing to put yourself into that kind of danger on a daily basis.

There are things Rory would be good at. Maybe a librarian or an archivist, or a researcher, or restoring rare books.

Yeah, I'll be real here and say most of the criticism presented on this thread over Rory not being the complete foreign correspondent package at 21/22 is kinda baffling me. But especifically don't see how someone who genuinely has been show as being interested in travelling and crave excitement would be happy/fullfilled as a librarian or archivist, but that's just me.

Yes, she's sheltered and, boy, does she need a thicker skin like you wouldn't believe but no one can say the girl isn't driven and disciplined and in my world that counts for A LOT as for achieving your goals.

Last, but not least, despite how obnoxiously perfect she was at times, the later seasons showed me that, at the very least, Rory would be quite at home as a newspaper editor, so I don't really see why journalism was so completely wrong for her, like most seem to.

And that was a pro-Rory Gilmore, post. I did not plan this.

  3. Tristan is a character that hasn't aged well. Or rather, doesn't withstand many rewatches, imo. He's fine if you catch a random episode. Maybe even appealing. But when you binge-watch the show then you get the full power of how utterly annoying he is to Rory.

  4. I believe "the Betrayal" and all players involved was what sealed the deal for Lorelai's instance. Not only did Richard and Emily break a promise to her and undermined her parenting but also Rory running to them. After that, sticking to her ultimatum was a lot more about punishing the three of them than thinking it was what was gonna get Rory back on track. I only wish we got Lorelai owning up to it.

Rory could have gotten a job, taken classes at that community college Lorelai went to, and gotten intensive therapy.

I never understood why Rory couldn't simply have taken the summer to think things over. Lorelai's ultimatum was ultimately (heh) useless on so many levels that I'm always shocked the show doesn't adress it more. Rory's decision to go back to Yale had very little to do with wanting to run back to Mommy but a lot more to do with her coming to terms with that was really the life she wanted. And she took exactly the amount of time she needed to do that. Hell, by alienating Rory completely, Lorelai deprived her of her guidance which, imo, caused Rory to flail for way longer than she would have if Lolelai hadn't been so inflexible.

It's sad that Lorelai is trying to communicate with Rory and getting shut down. I get Rory's pov though, when you know someone doesn't support a choice you are weary of discussing it with them.

I've always had very little simpathy for Lorelai in that scene or any other scene she feels getting shut down when it comes to Rory's relationships. To be quite frank, I love Lorelai to death, but this is the woman who pushed for Rory to feel flattered by Dean's clingy, suffocating and often stalkerish behavior, over and over and over again, even when Rory was rightfully annoyed by it and Lolelai herself would NEVER have put up with it from a suitor, just because he wouldn't try to get into her daughter's pants (or so she thought). Which, in turn, was a huge influence on why Rory stayed in that relationship way longer than she should have.

Not couting the affair storyline, I always thought Rory made way smarter choices when it came to her romantic life after she got out of Lorelai's thumb. And even when the choices weren't smart, at least they were small mistakes she had every right to make herself. Again, not couting the affair storyline.

ASP has said she didn't see it but friends told her about it. Then she says she saw some of it on ABC Family.  I don't believe for a second that she didn't watch it especially going into these new episodes.

I've dying to discuss ASP's remarks on season seven so I'm ecstatic this thread has been created!

I confess I also have a VERY hard time believing she hasn't watched season 7. But since the article takes as a premisse her telling the truth, then I'll play ball because at the end of the day that's irrelevant to whether it's canon or not.

    Quote

But no, she didn't do that; instead, she called up some people who had watched the seventh season and simply asked them whether any of her ideas for the revival would "step on" events from the intervening episodes. And from the sound of things, she decided to alter one of her proposed storylines as a result of what she heard. (...) So, to recap: Season 7 of Gilmore Girls was made without Amy Sherman-Palladino's involvement or approval, and she's proceeded with her story for these characters without viewing it herself. In the absence of an official statement from her (which I'm sure we'll never get), I think the case for those episodes' not being canonical is pretty solid.

This is a very fun article but I'm sorry, but the writer lost me there.

    Quote

ASP's desire to avoid contradicting anything from the seventh season isn't remotely the same thing as wanting to incorporate that season. Plenty of people who tune in to the Gilmorerevival in November will have watched all seven extant seasons, and there'd be nothing to be gained by baffling them with a storyline that explicitly overrules what they've already seen. Being pragmatic about something isn't the same thing as creatively acknowledging it.

    How in the what?

Personally, I don't expect to see in the Revival a whole lot of callbacks to season 7 or any at all given what we know. That said, the fact that ASP, at the very least, isn't activelly trying to contradict the events of season 7 means season 7 is canon. Frankly, I don't think she has a choice in the matter.  The show, as a complete product, has been out there for consumption for a decade now and I'd be willing to bet a good chunk of the fanbase doesn't know about the behind the scenes drama. I'm pretty sure I didn't know ASP didn't pen season 7 back when I watched it live.

She has to be pragmatic about it and by being concerned over not contradicting s7, IMHO, means she's creatively acknowledging it. Even if she's not inspired by it.

I'm all for canon relativism, man. I love that shit. I'll deny canon like a pro if the writing quality isn't up to standard and/or contradicts previously established facts/character traits. To this day, I refuse to accept the Rory/Jess relationship, as it was writen in S3,  or Dean/Rory falling in lust with each other (S4). Just to name a couple of things. But I don't buy your argument.

If you can judge a person by their friends, the fact that Logan is friends with Colin and Finn should tell you all you need to know about him.

Rory was also friends with Colin and Finn so that's pretty much all you need to know about this subject. To her credit, by the end of the show she was completely over them and their whole lifestyle.

(To be fair, I never thought they were as bad as some people think. Finn, especially.  The actor was incredibly charismatic and cracked me up more than once. Colin was just the guy you tolerated because was he and Finn were a package deal (as gay lovers).

But, to be really, really fair, if Finn and Collin were real people, we/Rory only got to see the tiniest bit of what asses they really must be.)

I guess I just don't understand why the onus should have been on Marty to get himself gracefully out of the situation in the first place.

Rory was the one who planned the Marx Bros. marathon night and begged Marty to hang out with her, she wouldn't take no for an answer (even though he was obviously trying to distance himself from her) but then she was sure okay with dropping their plans as soon as Logan showed up.  Marty should have told her to go stick it. Marty should have told her to go stick it.  (...)

Which is why it was quite rude of her to put Marty in the position where he had to go out with Logan & Crew just to spend time with her after she had begged him to spend time with her.

I agree with almost everything. Rory did put Marty in an incredibly awkward position. Ideally, she should have told Logan firmly she already made plans with Marty and bid him adieu. But she didn't! So it was up to Marty have some self respect and get himself the hell out of there because the writing on the wall couldn't be clearer.  I don't know about gracefully. But, imo, if the girl you have a crush on is going on a sorta date with the guy she's dating, well, it's matter of pride not to tag along even if one gets a horribly misguided invitation to. If you don't, well, I don't know what the hell you're trying to prove. Wait, actually I do.

I don't really see how Marty could even have said he had something else to do, when he and Rory are the ones who already had plans and Logan was the one "butting in" (unintentionally, but still).  And Rory was making it painfully obvious that she really wanted to go with Logan and his crew, which was really pretty crappy of her.

    Quote

Marty was, what? 19? He was being dumped by the girl he loved, who was also his only friend. So I can excuse him for nor reacting with a gallant shrug and a rueful smile.

    Quote

Logan all but said that Rory was part of their group now, and if Marty wanted to still hang out with her he was going to have to get used to being with all of them.  And Rory said nothing to refute that.  At least Marty was man enough to acknowledge that he didn't really want to be part of that, and moved on.

He was a nineteen, not nine, you guys. To answer everyone who's bewildered by how Marty could have saved himself and Rory more grief by not accepting the dinner invitation, quite simply, he could have said: "I don't feel like going but go ahead. We'll talk later." and went out of the door before some awkward reply could be mustered.

    The end.

Rory already knew he didn't like Logan and his friends so it would hardly have been out of the blue. That said, unless he was exceptionally good at masking his emotions, which Marty was not, it would have looked painfully obvious why he didn't want to go but so what? If he was going for subtle then he wouldn't have looked completely miserable throughout dinner, staring at Logan and Rory. But YMMV.

Is Luke also a creepy Nice Guy?

Sometimes, sure, he across like that to me personally. Entitled to Lorelai. The most egregious moment being him facing off Max at Lorelai's home. Good God, that was terrible. So embarrassing. But I feel the writers rightfully pulled back from that kind of behavior as the show went on. The narrative also called Luke out on his passiveness numerous times which culminated on him realizing HE needed to make a move.

I have to defend season 5 Marty.

You raised very good points and your take is how I saw Marty in S5... until the Duck Soup episode. I feel for Rory during that episode because she's trying so hard to keep her (only) friend even if it might mean blowing off the guy she really likes and has just started dating. By then the writing on the wall should have been more than clear to Marty and I don't get why he put himself through a dinner with Rogan + friends besides wanting to play the martyr. He could have easily stood his ground, made up some excuse and got himself the hell out of that situation. It would have been painfully obvious any way but at least he'd have kept his dignity.

Logan did come off a bit too slick

I like Logan and I definitely like the actor who plays him. He's exactly the "type" of fictional male character that usually draws me in but, in general, Logan comes off way too "slick" for Gilmore Girls. He belongs to a different show, imo. In turn, when Rory was with him it felt very much she had become an almost entirely different character in order for them to match.

    Quote

It comes off as if she is just people pleasing, to me, rather  than enjoying herself.

    Quote

Also yeah, Logan felt too "temporary" to be sold as end game for Rory.

ITA. Through s6-s7, Rory comes across to me like she's trying out an entirely new personality in order to fit in Logan's glossy, adventurous and glamorous world. I don't blame her; it's/he's awfully enticing on so many levels. But the writing on the wall was always very clear that they weren't meant to be.   She was always gonna outgrow him when she managed to find her own REAL adventures as a journalist and become more comfortable in her own skin. It fits on so many levels that when being with Logan became about settling down and limiting oneself Rory bolted. Which is why I have a hard time picturing them as endgame EVEN if ASP had been the one to write the last season, when they were by far at their most solid.

I don't get what's left to tell of their story. Does ASP want to do her own version of them falling apart that badly?

If Rory is ready to "settle down" now then we're supposed to be believe a guy like Logan has been, on some level, waiting for her all these years? Come on!

It looks to me as if Alexis Bledel is letting herself age more naturally than other actresses her age. I think we're so used to actresses in their thirties having extensive plastic surgery to look younger that when an actress that age does not, it appears "off," when in fact that's how most women that age look.

My thoughts went to the opposite direction, to be honest. It's a very short clip so I'm holding on the conclusions, but I believe it's partly how expresionless AB looked that seemed strange to me.

But she is also not 5, Lorelai. She knows Meemaw and Peepaw aren't perfect.

Oh, good! Glad I'm not alone. But there were plenty of bits on the original series I found unfunny or simply didn't get it so I'm also not worried.

I remember my first night a college, I was home sick and missed my mother. But I would never have asked her to stay lol. And what was weird about that is that Rory's roommates (minus Paris) didn't think it was lame or odd. Actually if I remember correctly it was the opposite it made her "popular".

    Quote

Yeah, I am surprised Rory didn't get crap from the mean girls on that one.  Even when your mom is Lorelai, it still would be very weird to have her sleeping over at the dorm on the first night.

I can buy well enough that the other students basically rolled with it because Lorelai is nothing if charismatic and their little take-out party did look lots of fun. But come morning and reality set in, I'd think 99% of them thought there was something wrong with Rory, plain and simple. No wonder we aren't shown Rory having made and kept ANY friends from that night on subsequent episodes.

A different person, a more self-aware and less coddled person, might have used the party to confront their own misgivings and make a much needed attempt to step out of their confort zone, maybe even by bonding with another person who might feel similarly hopeless at "adulting" or even found Rory's willingness to own up to being the ultimate Mama's girl and wanting to grow up a bit  and thus FRIENDSHIP! But nope. There's no talk of Rory making any friends there, probably because she hid behind Lorelai like she always does.

Which season (or even episode) do you find Lorelai most attractive?

Season 5 and season 6, hands down. After the awfulness that was s4, with terrible look after terrible look combined with their everpresent fried hair, it seems everything finally came together for Lorelai's look at season 5: the hair (dark, shorter, with soft waves), the make-up (simple and flawless) and that gorgeous professional wardrobe with the prettiest coats you will ever see.

My least favorite year was S4, followed by S7, when I could barely recognize Lorelai.

On another note, I didn't really like the article linked above. I thought it was a simplistic take on Lorelai, at best, and often unnecessarily harsh.

  18. The thing that really stands out to me during that time period is that even more unbelievable than Rory partying it off a conviction with a bunch of rich kids was her playing socialite!barbie so impeccably.

I get that Rory was basically trying out another personality because her last one failed her (?) but her becoming the DAR darling stretches my disbilief. The way she seems to pull out leadership skills and hosting skills out of Lord knows where and turn on the fake charm like the best sociopath again and again in season 6... I just!!!

People's social skills change as they age, I get it, mine sure took a turn for the better as I hit my twenties but even if I fanwank Rory figured out some sort of switch in her head where she can just channel Lorelai at the drop of a hat, I still don't buy the ultimate introvert such as her, a girl whose mother throws her a party the first night in college so she can get started on meeting new people and still who goes through college without making a single real friend, would managed to pull off befriending "Lacey" and her many cigarette patches at community service, or becoming chummy with the people at the internship in less than two weeks, or activelly making herself popular with Emily's friends at the DAR.

I don't think it's a coincidence we don't actually see her making those connections. We only see her strutting about, acting entitled, having already earned their love off-screen.

This article speculates that each season may be released in the each of the actual seasons. That would stink. I think that would risk losing some of the viewers interest.

Oh man, nope, nope! I'd honestly hate that. I'm as excited as you can be about the revival but the above would definitely take a toll on my level of interest.

I'm currently waiting around for all of the Digimon revival mini-movies to be released because after the first one I couldn't keep up with the rest. Depending what I have going on, I might block the hell out of everything relating to GG on tumblr and hope for the best that I don't get spoiled until everything is out.

I could deal with one episode per month, but I agree one week between each one would be ideal.

Sookie was a chef in a upscale Inn where her interactions with customers, let alone their offspring, was likely minimal.  As well, I don't recall her having nieces and nephews. So unfamiliarity with ordinary, non-angelic kids seemed logical enough to me.

I don't tend to have a big issue with GG's continuity, but my biggest issue with that scene is that we get to see at various point in the series Sookie showing up with food to Lorelai's house at a moment's notice and exactly the type of food that would considered adequate to a kid's party. Pulls me out of the scene everything single time.

As for other unpopular opinions, I like Colin and Finn as well as the Life and Death Brigade.  And on the subject of guys, Marty is a serious creeper.  Pass.

I like Colin and Finn too, especially Finn. As far as the Life and Death Brigade goes, I really liked "You jump, I jump, Jack" but the subsequent mentions weren't quite as fun.

    Marty was terrible.

I also think S7 is mostly fine. It's certainly not worst than S6 or, God forbid, season 4, imo.

I'm not quite sure this is an unpopular opinion, but I think the finale is a gorgeous episode and a fitting end for the show. Is it everything I wanted? No, but I doubt ASP would have given me that either. I don't hate anything about it.
