'And Just Like That...': Sara Ramírez talks 'emotional roller coaster' of Che and Miranda

"They go back to a previous job working with a friend where they still have to deal with real-life stuff, but they discover a new connection with someone. They’re just trying to find their way back to who they really are. Does that include comedy? Does that include love? That's the big question mark at the end."
"But my hope is that in Season 2 ‒ just like we embrace the humanity of the women on the show ‒ hopefully we continue to embrace Che Diaz's humanity. It’s important we remember that LGBTQIA+ people don't have to be perfect, just like the women don't have to be perfect. We get to be imperfect, we get to be unlikable, and you still get to root for our humanity."

The only thing I'm taking from this interview is that Sara Ramirez understands something different from the dictionary definition of humanity.

Once again, I do not like the implication that viewers dislike Che because they are LGBT+. We don't like Che because Che is an asshole. Che is an unfunny comic. Che is a narcissist, even said so themself. If Che were a straight white man who behaved the way Che does, everyone would hate him and viewers wouldn't be accused of bigotry. Sorry, not sorry.

It has not gone unnoticed (at least by me) that SJP has done very little press for this season. And even going back to last season SJP has not spoken publicly about the Che/Miranda story. I don't think she is as invested in AJLT as she was SATC. Cynthia Nixon OTOH is way too invested.

SJP has a reputation to protect. She did this for a money grab and likely, initially, thought it was going to be well-received, but now that she knows it's not, the less she says the better.

NuMiranda and Che are the worst things to happen to the Sex and the City universe. And if you think their breakup is going to stick, I've got news for you... surely and unfortunately, MPK will have them back together by the end of the season. Because despite the overwhelming criticism, MPK and Cynthia and Sara Ramirez do not care. They think they're doing something special here.

The article says the character gets better in the next few episodes, becomes better friends with Carrie, and starts to fit in with the gang more.  And Miranda starts to properly reckon with the change in her sexuality and also what she has done to poor Steve.  Hoping this means she and Che are over.  Still Che remains on the show.  If Che could morph into someone not so strident or all about lecturing others on queerness, that might help.  The article quotes a writer as saying that Che is “the type of person who can turn a coffee order into a lesson on colonialism.”  I think that’s the most accurate description I’ve heard so far.  That’s the quality that needs to be radically toned down, at least for me. I don’t believe it was intentional,  to make Che that way, though, as the writers say.   Sara Ramirez has been interviewed saying similarly obnoxious/strident things, like accusing the people who don’t like the character of hating queer people.  I agree that they’re backtracking now when they see the audience reaction to Che.

I'm sorry, but I just do not buy a Carrie and Che friendship. Che was her boss and an inappropriate one at that (smoking weed in the elevator, telling her to "step her p*ssy up", showing up to her apartment with booze and smoking weed and finger-banging her friend while Carrie's recovering from surgery in her bed…). They don't have anything in common. This has nothing to do with Che's identity and everything to do with Che's personality.

MPK and the writers think that if Carrie approves of Che, then we all will.

I was really disgusted by all the women who pushed Denise to talk about whatever allegedly happened with Brandi, and yes Kyle was one of them.

Well, it's Kyle's turn now! Time for her to take some accountability and provide answers. She's so used to being a sniper from the side, pawning off any responsibility by hiding behind the shield of the Fox Force Five - I'll say Rinna did do most of their dirty work. Kyle can't play the victim now, but surely she'll try because that's what she does. In her mind, nothing is ever her fault.

If Bravo turned the cameras back on, these women need to confront her accordingly. Bring back Denise and Camille, who are due some retribution.

side note: I take no joy in the dissolution of a 27 year marriage, and I feel for their daughters who are the most affected in this. But we have to stop letting Kyle act like she is the victim in everything.

I wonder if Kyle will get a scolding from Andy C. Robyn Dixon of RHoP tried to hide her family's scandalous business from Bravo, and reveal it on her own (monetized) podcast/Instagram right after the season ended, and Andy called her out on WWHL.

He won't. Andy only presses the POC Housewives…and Teresa from New Jersey. Everyone else gets glossed over, especially his favorites.

The rumors and leaks about Kyle and Mauricio are beginning to appear, and speculation is that some of them are from other housewives with grudges.

Karma is a bitch. She's thrown more than enough daggers at everyone else outside of her little clique.

But in all honesty, Kyle and Mauricio were probably trying to white-knuckle it for a few more years until Portia turned 18 and they'd become empty nesters. Unfortunately, time, or social media sleuths, wasn't on their side.

It's not like Kyle hasn't been obvious with all of her Morgan posts. It is a bit odd that a 56 year old woman would be hanging out with a 28 year old. And it's not like Morgan is friends with her daughters that are around the same age, making that the reason why Morgan is around a lot.

Didn't the tabloids say that Mauricio only lived at home while filming? I can see someone like Erika addressing it. With Rinna gone, everyone else will have to up their shitstirring game.

Not sure about the tabloid stuff but I did hear rumblings that supposedly Erika and some of the girls start questioning their marriage…to what extent, I don't know. Kyle's always been able to throw stones and hide her hand - the sniper from the side, so it would be interesting if she actually was confronted about something and had to answer instead of deflect.

She's been hanging out with the 28 year old country singer since last Spring, often times with Teddi in tow. Surely the Fox Force Five are aware of some dirt.

    I am officially bored.

    New Mauricio cheating gossip.

Facebookers claim M only lives with Kyle when she is filming.

If it has to do with Morgan Wade, it's Kyle who is messing with that 28 year old girl. Not Mauricio.

This is not to say that Mo hasn't had his own side piece(s), but Morgan is Kyle's new friend... there's a tik toker somewhere that has done a deep dive with this. I wish I could remember the @.

  8. Kim has far too much respect for her work and is protective enough not to let MPK and those clowns ruin Samantha Jones.

One short scene - as Pat said, people will be so happy - and in a fabulous outfit from Bergdorfs. Can't wait to see it!

I’ll take anything at this point.  Why couldn’t they have left the regulars and got a couple of new ones?  I’m not thrilled with the new.

I'm convinced ageism is a part of the reason for the full reboot.

Every other franchise has sprinkled in newbies and cycled out the ones who haven't worked - in RHONY's case, it would've be Leah and Ebony. But Andy and Bravo didn't even show RHONY the grace to give them a chance. They just threw the women and the franchise away.

    YMMV

So I'll take the Crappie Lakes and RHONY girls trips as much as Bravo will give us.

  10. This show could be pretty enjoyable if it were Carrie, Charlotte, Anthony, Nya, Seema and LTW. They are fun, fashionable, friendship and relationship-focused.

Miranda and her rom-com lover bring the vibe down.

    I anxiously await

    Spoiler

Samantha Jones' cameo in the finale

    From the Cut article:

    https://www.thecut.com/article/sara-ramirez-che-diaz-and-just-like-that-profile.html?utm_source=tw&utm_campaign=nym&utm_medium=s1

How did this coming-out come to pass? “It was honestly a two-sentence conversation between Michael Patrick and I,” Nixon tells me. “He said, ‘What do you think? Should we make Miranda queer?’ I said, ‘Why not? We’re queering up the show in general’” — Charlotte’s second child comes out as nonbinary in a “they-mitzvah” officiated by Hari Nef as a trans rabbi — “‘we’ve got a homegrown, home-team queer. Why not use me in that way?’”

Because you’re an actress!!  You don’t play yourself!  That’s your WHOLE job.

Especially for Miranda, who is an established character through 6 seasons and 2 movies.

Then there's Sara Ramírez, who despite saying otherwise, is in fact And Just Like Che:

It’s all a bit heavy, or maybe just heavy-handed, and very … Che Diaz, who introduces themself in the first episode of And Just Like That … as a “queer non-binary Mexican Irish diva.” Like all of the Sex and the City characters, Che, a social-justice-warrior scold with a podcast and a cannabis habit, represents a somewhat over-the-top version of a contemporary New York City type. Che is there to teach the well-maintained, well-meaning, nearly 60-year-old ladies about “compulsory heterosexuality,” pronounspeak, and using dialogue as a verb. Ramírez similarly uses words such as trauma, privilege, and social constructs to make their various on-point points. It might feel natural to make such comparisons in your head, but Ramírez heads them off, assuring me, “I’m an actor. I’m not the characters I play. I’m not Che Diaz.” (For the record, Ramírez’s Instagram bio describes themself as “abolicious” and a “MexicanIrishNon-binaryHuman.”)

A lot of people connected to SATC had lots to say about Kim Cattrall not wanting to do the story they had planned for the third movie and/or AJLT.  Thought she should have just shut up and played what was going to be written for her.  But seems like a lot of those same people think it's just dandy for Cynthia Nixon to want to destroy Miranda to the point she is barely recognizable.  And by the way when did Cynthia Nixon become so important that she could dictate what she wanted to have written for her character?

She can believe they all love one another and blah blah blah but I don't remember SJP or Kristin defending Miranda's storyline when there was such an outcry against it.

Everything I've learned about Cynthia Nixon has been against my will. She is so incredibly unlikable. Not my cup of tea.

And because of her, she's ruined Miranda. Miranda was never my favorite in the original series, but there were likable and relatable qualities. Now when I do a comfort rewatch of any given SATC episode, I can't stand Miranda.

Thanks, Cynthia! Maybe it would've been better if she won her election for Governor of NY, after all. Then there wouldn't be any of this revisionist (and not just for Miranda, but for all the women in the extension of SATC) crap.

  13. Reintroducing Che Diaz: Sara Ramirez character shows a different side in And Just Like That season 2

Predictable. The show is totally going to make Che a "victim" for sympathy points...the pilot will likely get canceled because big bad Hollywood discriminates against Che or something like that (even though the fact that Che's character exists on AJLT contradicts that argument, but who cares about details when the show can just label everyone a bigot - like that one article from last year - and manipulate viewers to change their mind on what is simply a poorly conceived and executed character).

They really think viewers are gullible.

And then there's MPK doubling down on his misinterpretation of Miranda's history:

In my opinion, a lot of people rewrote Miranda in their heads versus what I wrote for Miranda in the series," explains the longtime Sex and the City producer...[ ] ...Basically, Steve had to beg her to marry him

Season 6 Episode 1, Miranda flat out says she's in love with Steve. And she's the one who proposed to him! (Season 6 Episode 14)

Michael Patrick King is a fraud.

MMM, I saw Joe G a the end tell his sister he loved her and would always be there if she wanted him but, if not, the Gorgas would just walk away.... at which point, Theresa said something stupid and vicious.  It is Theresa who won't let any shit go. She is till accusing the Gorgas of putting her in jail (because, I guess, they are responsible for her criminal behavior. Please.)

    OK, Tre.

Joe was being emotionally manipulative at the end. He said he loves his sister and would be there for her if she got in a car accident, but he wouldn't go to her wedding.

And that is why Teresa said what she said about celebrating people when they're alive, which I took her to mean alive and well. Not just in tragedy.

And then, after being equally as done with Teresa throughout the reunion, Melissa says how she loves Teresa even though Teresa hates her and will go with the flow with the family. It's giving desperate to keep her job.

Both Melissa and Joe want to be seen as the ones who want to try and Teresa being the sole problem, despite the fact that they can't help but complain about Teresa like they did all this season. Enough of the flip flopping. The back and forth with this family is not entertaining 10 years in.
