This is what happened in the book, though, isn't it?

I don't know. I didn't read the book. So what if it was. The TV production could show some more scenes of what Toranaga was talking about or Blackthorne if they wanted. I'm not saying to change any of the characters fates.

We've seen a lot of the regents and seeing them turning on Ishido would have been interesting, for example.

It's just an odd way to end the show for me.

  2. It's a television though. Your general audience doesn't know what happened in the book or history. You're not making a show for the people who know that. And I actually know that. They didn't stick the landing.

In the real history that we do know, the Tokagawa Shogonate lasted quite a long time. You'd think the show might indicate that in some way. Toranaga wasn't just the guy who won this time around. They buried the lede on how total this victory was.

  3. I thought old Blackthorne was weird because the real one stayed in Japan for the remainder of his life. I didn't realize it was the dream until he let the cross drop into the lake.

I didn't think Toranaga burned the ship. Well played. They got me.

Was that the end? Toranaga just says what's going to happen?

I take the point that Toranaga wasn't going to win on the battlefield with lesser numbers, but I would have wanted to see that played out with the regents.

I also would have liked a little more on how the heir pulled back at the end. I said earlier that the heir liked Toranaga so I can get it. I would have just liked a little more.

I would have liked a glimpse into how Blackthorne actually spent his years in Japan. The Japans.

  4. In reading too much into this show, these past episodes really show Wolf as immature. He's 30? The sandwich is totally something a teen boy would eat. And the owner of the shop said so when Wolf worked there. You'd think he'd just stop at some point.

I'm not complaining; they've been consistent that Wolf had issues.

Recently, they've let Beef hook up and have a gf.

They did some growth with Wolf and the mother in law. I think they can keep moving that way.

  5. I haven't seen Alanis in ages.

Not that I have anything against edibles, but why is everything candy? I'm surprised the girl with the cool hair let them take so many.

I'm surprised the fancy restaurant even let the girls in.

Hoagie Pony is a great name for a sandwich shop even though Wolf's sandwich is gross. I don't like the plots recently that have leaned too wacky with Wolf. There's no reason Honeybee would indulge him.

I think they missed an opportunity to contrast growing up in Lone Moose with being in larger city.

  6. I watched the superbowl at 6 am when I lived in Japan. I had to get there for 6. It was $50 all you could drink with eggs, bacon, and hash browns at half time. Better than watching a junk game in London.

We'll "wake" you up before you "go-go"!

    Wow, hard with RFK zinger.

I'm not hard on Marge as Heisenberg our SpartanGirl, but she's haranguing Homer about Larry who she literally didn't know existed until right now. If he went off with Lenny and all them to scatter the ashes, she'd be yelling at him for just taking off with the guys.

I'm surprised they got wifebanger by.

  8. Well, she was yammering on how inferior he was and how he came from a ghetto to marry one of them, so I'd say yes.

  9. I have no idea what was going on in the opening, but I liked how Charles was introduced to the rest of the galaxy as "professor". Where everyone thinks Earth is a ghetto.

The alien sister was a bit much with the bigotry, but I liked how Xavier basically said, "you act like a child, I'll treat you like a child." *Raise your hand*

I'm glad Storm got her power back, but I don't think she needed to scare all those horses.

  10. What kind of chip did Brian get?! The chip is microscopic and you use a needle. The chip paid off though.

Showing the USA goal was brilliant. So great.

I always like when they do dog plots with Brian.

I'm not sure stopping Jesus is the key to stopping christianity. It wasn't his fault. I thought it would have been funnier if "Jesus" wasn't actually one person but a whole bunch so he couldn't ever stop it.

That said, all the jokes in the past were brilliant. You don't normally hear the Loggins and Messina version of Danny's song over the Anne Murray either.

I thought maybe when they came back that the world without religion would somehow be really worse, so status quo would be preferable. I liked that it was fine.

That's it? God just beat them up?

I think they held back. I'm all in for an anti religion message. They should have gone to the wall and really skewered it.

I would also be okay with John Leguizamo doing the occasional Lewis Black style rant if he doesn't become the next host.

I think he's got too much going on for permanent duties, but a guest spot would fit well based on yesterday's monologue.

"Now the jury just needs a white woman who calls herself a witch."

Blackthorn adopts more Japanese ways, to the point that he no longer wanted to associate with his shipmates and started to see them as barbarians.

To be fair, they did have that scene in the series. I don't think we needed more than that. Invariably, remembering the size of the book, you've only got limited tv time, so you're going to have to cut some. They could have done a little more to show Blackthorne assimilating more. In this episode, they kind of did, but I think they just needed to show him being a little more attentive overall.

I don't know if they needed more of the romance, but I'm not going to argue too hard. Mariko was way buttoned up about her eightfold fence, so we're not going to see anything overt here. I thought she was clearly hot for him. They shot the scene in the tea house perfectly. She booked it out of there because she was *this close* to jumping him.

It seemed to me that this show leaned way more into the Japanese characters than going with the typical White Savior, which is the right call. That's going to shove him aside a lot.

As for the traditional Japanese religion, I hope we'll hear someone with more knowledge explain, but I think it was more like Shintoism

Now, it's a mash of all sorts. There's still christians around, buddhists, shino. Japanese aren't 'structurally' religious like the catholics. In WWII Shinto had grown to prominence. Even here in 1600, you see Toranaga at the torii, but that's really the extent of it. There's still torii all over the place, but people don't go to church every Sunday.

The way I remember it the old mini-series was mostly a vehicle for the lead actor who was according to my mother a very big deal back then with all the Japanese cast there to support him.

Richard Chamberlain was THE guy back then. He was in all the miniseries and then some. I know I watched Shogun as a kid, but I don't remember it. I'm not surprised that they would have built the entire show around him. And he was gay af but no one knew back then!

And that goes a long way towards getting behind that eightfold wall.

Oh, I clapped for Blackthorne when he stepped up. I thought it was the best scene in the show.  He didn't look so confident with the sword that he was going to do it one shot to me. I thought she stalled just a little bit. I don't doubt she would have done it, but I do think the primary motivation was to force Ishido's hand.

Unless Toranaga airs it out in the finale I doubt if we get much more than the earlier flashback scenes of showing Lord Toranaga in Lord Akechi's ear much like Lady Ochiba was later in Lord Ishido's.

Anyone can look up what happened. I don't think it's necessary to explain it out here either. Basically, the hand of the king killed the king because the king went nuts. That's about it.

  14. I wasn't expecting Blackthorne and Yabu just to waltz into Osaka. I thought they'd be sneaking around. I guess it's smarter to come in and pretend you're rogue. Easier to let the ninjas in too.

Their pairing is as entertaining as I was hoping. I'll give Blackthorne some credit. He shut up and paid attention in the meeting. Even though he talked trash to the catholic regent.

Not as much trash as Mariko was slinging around! I got your permit right here! I know they weren't going to kill her, but still. She at least shamed the other regents.

Blackthorne got out of there in a hurry when Mariko said it was time to go. I don't care what the year is, no dude wants to be in the room when two women going at it.

I wasn't expecting Blackthorne to step up and second Mariko. I assumed it was a ruse, but it looked like she was going to go through with it. I don't think it would have worked if she let Blackthorne in on it.

Unless another party got Lord Yabushige and the ninja.

I don't know. When the other guy came up to Yabu, he said, "Ishido accepts your offer, but you have to do something." I would think that was to let the ninjas in. Subcontract out the kidnapping.

Getting a better view of the castle to me it seems that there is just too many interior walls for even the Dutch canon to make a difference.

We know the siege of the castle working in real life. I don't know if it's going to be combined here into the show, but it actually happened.

  15. I know it's not too hard to mine the comedy from Trump's daily bloviating, but I'm exhausted. I have no idea what was going on with the Gettysburg nonsense.

  16. Wow that doctor has to be the most reprehensible thing anyone ever said on the show.

Was the Wyoming vegetable Gene from Bob's Burgers?

  17. I actually do think the cowboy hat guy was being honest. No one really thought Roe was going to be overturned, so voting for the 1864 law simply appeases the extreme anti-wing of their voting body. They should be held accountable for their votes, but I don't think anything will come of it.
