  1. So I spent a little time googling because I just can't believe that there is anything positive in the Mark/Nikki dynamic that would make her stay, and found a couple of things that may factor into it: Dr. Annalisa Enrile, a Filipino professor in social work at USC and a board member of the Mariposa Center for Change, said these marriages last because of a value in the Philippines called Utang Na Loob, which roughly translates as a debt of gratitude. %u201CThey feel that they own this man something,%u201D Enrile said. %u201CAnd they owe it to him to make the relationship work.%u201D Another Filipino value called Pakikisama roughly translates to maintaining smooth interpersonal relationships and loyalties, and Dr. Enrile thinks that this cultural norm keeps women from leaving their marriage. Caveat - I am not Filipina and I cannot confirm that these things are in play with Nikki, but it certainly would seem to be a possibility.
  2. In regards to house Fernando and mom Fernando it probably is his house. I bought my house outright from my parents over 12 years ago (as in, bought it not took over the mortgage or anything like that). They moved into a retirement place for a year or so, and then moved back for medical reasons. My mother is not capable of admitting that she lives with us, continues to refer to it as her house, tells people we live with her, etc. Maybe it's pride, I don't know. But honestly the dynamic between Fernando and mom Fernando was so similar to me and my mom that I totally get his whole avoidance of him stepping up to say anything to her about Carolina. It's just so much easier (and yeah cowardly, but easier) to make simple blanket statements every once in a while - like the "but that's not true" in response to her talking about Columbians and drugs - and keeping out of it the rest of the time. I doubt that that Josh and the Russian (ha!) are living on student loans. Mormons are pretty much against taking on debt, even student loan debt. Much more likely to be involved in some type of family business while going to school. Mark is a piece of shit and even if Nikki were a class A bitch of a gold digger I would root for her to take him for everything and leave his ass. They could edit him to hell and back and never make him out to be anything other than what he obviously is - a misogynist who is looking for supplicant. It could have been been any Filipina. Nikki isn't a person to him any more than his first wife who - in case you never heard, left him with 4 kids in diapers!! did you know? - was. I didn't notice until last night but WTF with Loren's jaw when she's upset and yelling? It's like it goes sideways or something. It was so weird. But I do give her total points for her facial expressions on every cutaway from Mark. Cause damn! Even as the most self-obsessed person on that set she KNEW he was ass.
  3. That version is just lovely. The SSB is a complete BITCH to sing. It is definitely NOT a particularly singer friendly song. Then we basically send people out there to sing it - frequently acapella - and expect a note perfect rendition. In terms of hit or miss it's pretty often a miss. Feliciano's version kept the general melody but kept it in his comfort zone of singing. Good on him.
  4. My hubs and HS senior were watching the Cubs/Pirates games, so I dragged my HS frosh into watching it with me. After it was over he said, WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? I mean I KNOW what American Horror Story is in a general pop culture sense, but what was going on? Is it all just going to be jump scares? And then I realized that I've never let either of my boys watch it before. This was a pretty rough episode for an introduction in retrospect.
  5. I'm also in the minority that didn't peg it as horrible. A couple of things that have been mentioned here... I must have missed where Annorra was said to be Slavic. I assumed that given this is Wales that this was an attempt at a Welsh accent, which would explain the tapped pr rolling sounds on her hard consonants like "r" and "d". I didn't think it was a particularly GOOD attempt, and given that literally no other actor is making a similar attempt I'm not sure I understand the point, but I never thought it was supposed to be something other than Welsh. It's true that the Baroness would most likely be remarried quickly to a crony of the king (or more likely to whomever her husband liege lord was), the reason she remained there is because it was her inheritance. I don't think it belonged to her husband. She's meant to be Welsh herself (the 2nd episode is specific about that) and there are hints here and there, primarily through the exchanges with her maid. But also because it wasn't uncommon for a landless lord to be given a wife with property as a prize for service. In any case, it's not great, but it's not horrible. I could do without the magical realism though.
  6. Having spent the last 3 days coaching an 17U baseball team, my first thought was "hey Eph, adjust that damn machine so the strike zone isn't set for a 6 foot tall man" and my second though was "jesus I wish that kid would take a ball to the head"
  7. I've decided I cannot stand Nora. Hate is probably not going too far. And really, it has nothing to do with having sex with Eph. He has his own ridic issues with his ex/wife, and we all realize she's rather stupid to be feeding into that. Mostly it's like, if this was a real thing, I'd have smacked her silly by now. It's just like when people disappeared back at home? Yeah, it's kind of not. But whatever perpetually crying lady.
  8. Answers: 1) the file had the alias AR used when he was scamming her boss while her boss thought he was scamming AR. there has to be more with this storyline going forward, otherwise her lying about the key makes zero sense. 2) the riot couldn't have been Castro related - way too early, plus Castro would have been maybe 5 or 6 at the time. I doubt the riots were supposed to be more than an opportunity for Meyer to let Nucky know he was also in Cuba. the only other possibility, if the Cuba storyline plays out long-term in this final season, is that it's some kind of prelude to the Batista coup that's a couple of years down the road. but even that seems unlikely. 3) the implication is that Meyer was there to kill Nucky, or at least that's what Nucky thinks. 4) the singing, dented head Milton asked him if he knew how they put the voice inside the little box of the telephone. Chalky, naturally looked at him like he was batshit crazy, and told him "electricity." then Milton wanted to know if Chalky knew how/had ever used a phone, and when Chalky said yes told him that he had money stashed someplace and would split it with Chalky if he used the phone. I guess because calling someone was an integral part of getting the cash and Milton didn't know how to used one. 5) I thought it sounded like her, but I think it was the actress playing Nucky's mom.
  9. Did anyone else catch the other majorly asinine thing said by Nora? When Samwise is explaining why he sold them out - he's broke, his wife has the big C, it's metastasized all over, she's dying, they've tried every possible treatment, Nora busts out with, "You have insurance." I guess in her bizarro world, you know the one where 10 foot stingers shooting out of mouths that suddenly open sideways on people she herself were dead, CDC employees have that awesome insurance that covers 100% of all out of pocket expenses forever and ever, including experimental treatments. Shut it Nora. You moron.
  10. Eh, I didn't get a "love of my life" vibe from Eric about Sylvie. She was just some little doll that he could play with and feed off of. Sylvie is just a plot device to introduce the Japanese angle, and give Eric some screw you screen time with Nan. Everything about his interactions with Sylvie was so off hand - killing her dad, wanting her to finish her degree, making out with her in front of Nan. None of that screamed "love of my life" to me. He was shocked at the whole Sophies Choice thing, but I think that's because he suddenly recognized that his pettiness was actually causing someone's death, and that someone could just as easily have been Pam. Other thought - did they retcom the Fortneberry storyline too? I swear, I thought that Jessica glamored Hoyt into forgetting their entire relationship before he left. She did that but left Maxine remembering it all? Doesn't make sense to me.
  11. I only got a quick glimpse of the map, but it looks like Eric is in central Europe - France or Switzerland. The map showed a river that was labeled Rhone.
