Okay, this is an embarrassing question for someone who has watched the animated version more than once, but here goes. How did the Fire Nation know that they hadn't finished off the Avatar in the attack against the Airbenders? And why did they keep looking for him or her if there had been no signs of Avatar activity for 100 years? Was that ever explained? Was it explained in this episode and I missed it?

5 hours ago, Stardancer Supreme said:

It wasn't explained in the show. I saw an explanation derived from the A:TLA comic books that Sozin and the Fire Sages determined that the Air Nomad Avatar was still alive when no Water Tribe Avatar showed up. Then to make sure that they disrupted the Avatar Cycle, they targeted the Southern Water Tribe waterbenders. As an aside, if they had gotten Aang, the next Avatar would be weakened since there wouldn't have been any way for the next one to learn Airbending. (The Avatar Cycle is Fire, Air, Water, Earth.)

There's also the implication that they thought they had ended the Avatar cycle, and that Ozai sending Zuko to "find the Avatar" was a snipe hunt.  Hence Iroh saying that Zuko returning to the Fire Nation, successfully no less, would be "unexpected".

  2. While I'm not 100% sure how I found this (some sort of YouTube trawling looking into reaction videos of things, but I forget the exact chain that led me here), I recently completed watching The Watchers in the Bar (a group of friends/co-workers centered around a bar somewhere in Chicago, with all sorts of reaction video series...starting with Game of Thrones) 's reactions to both the original A:TLA and Korra.  Like practically everyone, they loved the series and universe, so they're looking forward to this live action as well.

They're prepared to watch the new series once it starts and release reaction episodes soon after, but they have reacted to both the official teaser and trailer.

(Small warning: they made a lot of jokes that could "ruin your childhood" when they reacted to the two series, and they will most likely continue to do so in future.  This group may not be for everyone.)

They also reference another YouTube reaction channel; The Normies.  They also covered both the original series and are very much looking forward to the new series

And while I'm on the subject of reactions: Michaela Jill Murphy, the voice actress for Toph, has a series of A:TLA reactions on her channel.  She's also reacted to the live action teaser (which appears to be her first reaction video)

    and the trailer.

  3. New episodes started last night.  And this first one was a pseudo-revisit.  Phil and Jess went to Romania/Transylvania to investigate the Hoia Baciu, the "most haunted forest in the world".  And a location that Josh visited with his old show; one where one of his crew, Evan, was attacked.

Lots of interesting things happening with the equipment.  And during the GPR check of the Rotunda, I came to the same conclusion Phil did just before he said it.  Then again, there was a little prompting in that direction with the local experts that Jessica was talking to.

I'm Just a Bill is great, but my favorite Schoolhouse Rock song is Interjections.

Have any of you heard the filk parody "Exclamations"?  It's pretty decent.

Of course, when talking about Schoolhouse Rock!, one must also consider the cover album from the mid-90s, with various artists covering different songs from the series.  About half of the ones mentioned in the current discussion were not included, but there are versions of "Verb" by Moby, "3 is a Magic Number" by Blind Melon, "Conjunction Junction" by Better Than Ezra, and "Lolly, Lolly..." by Buffalo Tom.

UO: Some of these covers are better than the originals.

ABC also had a couple other interstitial series that they used interchangably with Schoolhouse Rock!; Time for Timer and The Bod Squad.  These focused on health.

UO: Some of these are better than some Schoolhouse Rock! segments.

From the way Corey made it sound, it was like they weren't able to go for a new buoy once they messed up with the first one they chose. I'm not sure whether it's because they only had a select number of mussels attached to a select number of buoys and no extras, but Corey deciding they had to switch tasks instead of finding a new buoy definitely implied that they had to retrieve their original buoy with the mussels. I can't imagine they wouldn't have thought of that once they messed up, so I think they just weren't allowed to go for a new buoy due to the limited number of buoys they had placed.

It also seemed like going back to correct their mistake should have been easier.  The buoys looked evenly spaced on all the ropes on the course, and they flubbed by just removing a marked buoy.  So there should have been an obvious gap on one of the lines where a buoy should have been, but wasn't.  In essence, it was marked by not being marked.  Their problem was they kept looking along lines without a large gap.  And I think I saw a gap on a line as they were paddling back to swap the buoy for the chains after declaring the Bald Snarking.

  7. Clue in the opening was vague: a shot of one of the hourglasses from the Journey.   All it could imply was that there would be some sort of challenge on a limited time, but no context around it.

Ah yeah, Kellie takes the crown for the sourest juror....ever. I guess she's going to bitch face her way all the way to the finale and it was ridiculous blaming Bruce for her sitting there when he was one of the few people that didn't vote for her.

It wasn't even that.  It was the fact that she had an opportunity to vote him out (at the F12 split when she had one of the necklaces), and she voted out "Seafou" instead.  That allowed him to get on this immunity run and keep his own ass covered.  If she'd voted him out then, she might still be in the game.  Though she may have been the 2nd juror anyway.

I assume the opposite and he only read what was shown. A savvy player might realize that by saying "That's four, that's enough" means that there might be/are additional votes. I do not know if it is customary for him to read off every vote beyond what is necessary to vote someone off.

On 11/23/2023 at 12:02 AM, Skooma said:

Why?  Nothing in the rules to say he has too.  No way he reads them all off camera.  If someone has enough votes to be voted off that is it.  Let the remaining Survivors go all paranoid trying to figure things out after Tribal Council. That is what you want on the show.

Technically, you're all correct here, from a certain point of view.

Peachy does read all the votes...when he goes up to "tally" them.  He also sorts them by whom they are for, and puts them back in the urn in an order for the drama of the reading.  (There's supposedly "pockets" within the urn for this reason, so in this case all the Kendra votes were in the one pocket, and her vote for Jake was in another.)

But back in front of the castaways and on camera, he only reads the minimum number necessary to mathematically declare a loser, while still reading all the votes in the minority.  In this case, it was 4 -1.  Which works for both the 6 votes that most of the cast thought there would be, and the 7 that there actually were.  Kendra's vote for Jake was the only outlier in a standard "Survivor unanimous" vote, so only 4 votes of the remaining 5 or 6 needed to be read in addition to hers to clinch the vote.  The remaining 1 or 2 weren't necessary to be shown, so they weren't.  (Lucky Austin.)

And as I was writing this, a funny thing occurred to me.  Austin has now not voted at a TC where most of them think he did (Kaleb's lucky draw), and did vote at a TC where most of them think he didn't.  Balance.

In keeping Track of things: one important change.  Austin no longer has 2 Idols.  (At least, at the moment).  There are now three idol holders: Austin, Bruce, and Julie; each with one idol.  It is unclear whether Julie's idol is good until F6 and Austin's until F5, or vice versa.

Peachy said at the end of last week's episode of the podcast that there are no more quitters this season.  However, he didn't say anything about medevacs, so....

I was with the group who thought he might be having another medical episode when he kept losing his train of thought, but that might have just been a setup for when he pretended to slip up about an idol.

On the one hand, it's been repeatedly said that the lack of food on Survivor does lead to slower thinking.  There've been other people at TCs past  that have had difficulty answering Peachy's questions, simply because it was hard for them to think without having eaten in a while.

On the other hand, there is speculation that Jake was acting the whole time as the set-up for his "slip of the tongue" (which I think we can all agree that that part was deliberate, and a decent ploy).  If it was acting from the beginning, Jake deserves an award for that one.

But taking into account Jake's two prior fainting spells/seizures... yeah, it's too close to call.  Could be any of the three; normal Survivor brain-fog, another medical moment for Jake, or some Emmy-worthy acting.

Just the 2 idols: The Amulet, which is good until F6, and Reba's Beware Idol that he fully empowered to be valid until F5.

Bruce has the only other advantage in the game now; a "normal" idol also good until F5.

Drew's Safety Without Power was only good through F10, IE this TC.  So it has now expired.  (I was afraid that he was going to slip it to Jake to use to take Jake off the table for this vote.)

I want to know how production hides all those money tubes while the players are at camp. You know the players wander around all the time looking for idols and advantages, and they can't do it at night, presumably. So they must have to round up the players and confine them to one spot while they go hide all the stuff.

Notice the minute the players see a boat headed their way they immediately assume it's bad. At least they understand what this "game" has turned into. Anything unexpected? Must be bad.

I think these two were related.  As in, I think the reason they sent the collection table by boat was to get all of the players on to the beach, so that other members of the crew could plant the money tubes while the cast was distracted with something unusual happening.

I think it is telling that Bruce did not offer his immunity necklace to Jake. The votes were in, so nobody would have voted for Bruce and he couldn’t keep the necklace once there’s a new immunity challenge. So he wouldn’t have jeopardized himself at all.

if I were Jake I would definitely be doubting my alliance now with Bruce.

As has been said, you can't give away the necklace after the votes are cast.  The only time Bruce could have given the necklace to Jake would have been before anyone had voted.  But that would have been Survivor suicide.

What's actually telling is that Bruce didn't play his idol for Jake.  That he could have done, and it was fairly clear that Jake was in trouble.  But Bruce kept it.  Jake now knows where he really stands with Bruce.

If they did have 2 more items up for auction and Bruce and Emily had used all their money too, would it have just nullified the lose your vote part of it? What if there had been even more items up, but nobody had any money left to buy them? If Jeff hadn't told them there were no advantages, would they have hoarded their money at the risk of losing their votes?

These are good questions.  I also thought of those possibilities.  And hoarding the money for advantages is what broke the auction in the first place, so it was smart that they took that off the table from the start.

However, the real big question is, did Peachy really draw that 10 from the bag?  He drew something from the bag, then took it down below the edge of the auction block to look at it.  But that move could also have easily covered a switch.

Given there were 10 of them, 10 would have been a good number to force.  Someone was likely to hedge a bid at some point (Emily, Austin's bid on the eyes) and have some money left over, which would guarantee the consequence happening.

Survivor (and TAR) returning with 90 minute episodes March 2024

FYI: Survivor actually premieres for its 46th season in February.  ON 02/28/2024 & 03/06/2024, we're getting 2-hour episodes.  Then when TAR returns with it's 90-minute premiere, Survivor goes back to 90 minute episodes

Per the article, Peachy said that, unlike 45, they didn't know if they were going to get the 90-minute timeslot for 46 as they were prepping and shooting it, so they didn't "add in" anything to help extend the runtime in case they'd have to cut it.

By this, I think he was referring to the Treasure/Scavenger Hunt Idols that featured in 45.

How about this? They did an episode where the Jestons went down to the ground and the Flintstones were living there.

That was a crossover movie.  And it involved time travel shenanigans with one of Elroy's school projects.  The Jetsons went back in time to Bedrock and met the Flintstones and Rubbles (either before Pebbles and Bam-Bam were born or after they'd grown up and had moved out, since they don't appear).  Then the latter accidentally were transported forward to the future when Rosie tried to get the Jetsons back.  Both groups adapt and end up with some celebrity in the other time frame, but in the end they all want to go home to where they belong.  And they do.

    • Kellie

    nu!Belo

    • Austin
    • Drew
    • Emily
    • Kendra

On top of that we have

    • Kendra's unseen visit to OG!Lulu before the first TC (see below)
    • The 1st Journey where Bruce and Drew met (with non-factor Brandon)
    • Kaleb meeting/raiding Reba camp and giving the Goodwill Advantage to Drew

    • Idols
      • Austin has Reba's Beware Idol and has now fully empowered it to work until the F5.
      • Bruce has Lulu's replacement Idol, which is also good until F5.
    • Amulets
      • Since there are now 2 left in the game, Kellie (yellow) and Austin (blue) each have half a Steal-A-Vote.
        • To use that power, they must agree on
          • Which TC to use them
          • Whose vote to steal
          • Who the stolen vote will be cast for
      • If either one them is voted out, the other then has a full idol.
      • In either case, the power of the Amulets is good until F6.
    • Other "Advantages"
      • Drew still has his Safety Without Power, which is good until F10.
      • Sifu has made a fake idol, which could come into play
    • Advantage Graveyard (aka all advantages out of play)
      • Sabiayah's Wax Idol
      • The (presumed) unfound Beware Advantage Idol from Belo
      • The Goodwill Advantage
      • J. Maya's Amulet (red)
        • The Amulets' Extra Vote power

Kaleb is pretty fascinating, for someone who just completely upset the apple cart and thwarted a unanimous vote, there sure were a lot of people excited and happy for him at the same time. He does seem like a lot of fun and if he can go on an immunity run, he's got an excellent shot. But it's so early in the merge to be such a massive target, that's a long way to immunity run to the finish.

I think that stems from 2 factors:

    1. They all genuinely like Kaleb as a person.  Their votes for him were not out of any personal animosity (except for maybe one...), but for the usual backhanded complimentary reason on Survivor of "You're such a good player, I can't beat you.  You have to go so I can win."  So him sticking around is good thing on a personal level as their "friend" is still in the game.
    2. They're all Survivor fans.  So to see not only the SITD come up "Safe" (which has only happened once before), but for it to then nullify every vote cast!  That's something amazing to be a part of and witness live, much like when Wentworth nullified 9 votes for her with a hidden idol play.

Chris gets a lot of blame for winning the season with the worst concept behind it on Survivor.  Edge of Extinction?  Just goes to show the producers are so excited about all of the twists and turns they develop without thinking through the potential consequences.  It is fun to watch survivors find the loopholes to the various twists and then see Jeff's reaction and how it's addressed on future seasons.  However, even though Chris won according to the parameters of the season on which he appeared, I view it as unfair to the participants who lasted the entire season without getting voted out.  Chris' win does carry an asterik with it IMO.  Even though it's not his fault that the season was poorly designed, he will continue to be labeled according to his season.

It is unfair that Chris is getting blame for his win.  It's true that he did not cheat or break any rules of the version of the game he played, so he does have a clean and "legal" win and shouldn't be getting any heat for that.  And I'm pretty sure that if anyone else from that season won, other than Julie or Gavan (the only two players to not be voted out that season), that they'd get the same flak and have the same asterisk on their win.  Even the fan favorites like Reem, Aubry, and Rick Devens.

It is TPTB that should get the "blame" for Chris's win.  But since he's the visible face of the events, he's the one drawing the heat.

Also of note, to date there have only been 5 seasons with a post-voting safety net for the "eliminated" players; 3 RIs and 2 EoEs.

    • RI (original)- BRob won
    • South Pacific (RI)- Sophie won
    • BvW (original; RI) - Tyson won
    • EoE (original) - Chris won
    • WaW (EoE)- Tony won

Of those 5 winners, 4 of them never set foot on their respective safety net islands.  Chris is the only winner that has, making him the only winner to have "lost" the game in the same season.  And until and unless another season has a winner caught by a similar safety net, he'll always have that asterisk.
