They also dumbed down Rachel to have her be a love interest to Joey (having them both giggle at Ross's speech in Barbados - Rachel has never acted like that before).  Just the whole thing, ugh.

All the characters seemed to become less mature over time (in general terms -- each had his or her moments of being smart/sensitive).  There seemed to be a fairly major change in season 5.  Phoebe's pregnancy nastiness became pretty permanent.  Ross's debacle with Emily pushed him over an edge, and Rachel got more petty about him and things in general.  Monica and Chandler became like giddy teens in their secret romance.  And Joey become more... Joey.   It certainly led to some hilarious storylines and scenes, but they were much different characters from where they started the series.

The studio pushed for Stanfield to be nominated in lead and for Kaluuya to be nominated in supporting. But there were very likely some voters who rejected that idea, and saw Kaluuya as the lead - and a decent number of them must have voted for Stanfield as their #1 choice in supporting.

That didn't quite make sense to me at first because I thought actors had to submit themselves in one category or the other.  But according to the rules:

    Quote

The determination as to whether a role is a leading or supporting role shall be made individually by members of the branch at the time of balloting.

There's even a protocol for what happens if the same actor/role meets the nomination threshold in both categories!

Happy to see Judas and The Black Messiah show up so strongly in the nominations. I've seen some concern online from people worried that their putting Lakeith in for Supporting as well may result in his and Daniel splitting the votes and someone else winning. But I don't see it happening. I think Kaluuya has mad momentum around him right now and he's riding it all the way to the Academy Award win.

Who the heck were Kaluuya and Stanfield supposed to be supporting in JatBM?

In the intro he talks about the 20 different regions of Italy, so I assume the plan was to visit each one if the show was renewed.  I believe it has been picked up for a second season.

Was there a disclaimer last night about the episode being filmed prior to the pandemic?  There was for the Milan episode, and I did not see any evidence of masks last night.

I am enjoying this a lot.  My husband was born in Italy so he has a lot of insight.

The one thing I have noticed is the lack of garlic in a lot of the dishes.  Contrary to popular belief Italians do not add garlic to every recipe.  That is something that has evolved with Italian-American cooking.  This is an issue in my house as my husband is allergic to garlic (and onions).  Having said that there will be more garlic in the Sicilian dishes next week.

Yes, the same message about pre-pandemic filming appear at the top of the episode.  And that's true about garlic.  I use it a lot more than my Trentino relatives do.

Maybe they can go to Siena or other Tuscan towns in season 2.

He has 14 more regions to visit in subsequent seasons!

He's got to come up with better remarks and reactions to the food though.  Mix it up a bit.  Could swear he said "it melts in your mouth" more than once this season.

Yes, that's getting a bit repetitive!

BTW, one of the best places we ate in Florence  in 2001 was a cafeteria!  We had come back from a daylong bus trip to San Gimignano and an agriturismo farm outside of San Donato and wanted a light dinner.  We followed what appeared to be a group of Italian-speaking university students down a side street and up some stairs to a cafeteria where none of the servers spoke English -- that's always a good sign!  We liked the food so much, that we went back there another evening.  Always venture off the main streets.  😉

They're not episodes, but rather groups of hosts in the intros and outtros of the films talking about what makes them problematic. With Woman of the Year they couldn't really talk about the problem until the outtro since it would have been a major spoiler talking about it beforehand. I would love it if they actually did have a full show about the films as well.

Ah, thanks for that clarification.  There are various intros to GWTW at the website, but this most recent one doesn't seem to be there.  I'll have to keep an eye out for another airing.

I hope this gets renewed - it's the only network comedy I watch since The Good Place ended. Oh wait, I just remembered that Brooklyn Nine-Nine is coming back for its final season in the fall.

    Yay for B99!

This episode will be preempted tonight due to the Biden speech. Young Sheldon, B Positive and Mom each move back 30 minutes but I guess they didn’t want to do the same for Clarice. 🤦🏼‍♂️No word on when it will air. Logic says to push the last two episodes back two weeks and ditch the repeat scheduled for the 25th.

Thanks for the explanation!  I was puzzled by what my DVR actually recorded last night, and I wondered if Pres. Biden's speech had something to do with it.  I can wait.  😁

I'd be willing to try some of those dishes but in other places than Milan.  However my recollection of other places in Lombardy were that pasta was just as popular as in other provinces.

I think Milan gets a bad rap.  My husband and I spent four days there in 2009 (after 2 days in Varenna on Lake Como) and found plenty to see, do and eat.  We had the most beautiful cappuccino and pastries at the Galleria opposite the Duomo.  And yes, pasta is eaten pretty much everywhere in Italy.  Tucci's just trying to highlight differences about where dishes originated. We saw ravioli being consumed at the communal restaurant at the end, but it had some local ingredients, like chestnuts, I think.

She's shown up twice--in that restaurant on the Amalfi Coast (spaghetti & zucchini + the big  storm), and last night, their visit to that big restaurant where people sang at the end of the meal.  So I bet she's traveling along with him, enjoying the wonders of Italy.

She actually joined him at Lake Como, then they went down to Milan together.  I think I heard Stanley say that he and Felicity met at Lake Como?

Actress Nicola Pagett who played Elizabeth Bellamy in the original Upstairs, Downstairs has died, age 75.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-56291059

From the BBC article linked above:

    Quote

Pagett's role as Bellamy in the first two series of ITV's 1971 drama Upstairs, Downstairs helped the show win four Emmys.

Her character's storyline, dominated by a tumultuous love life while stuck in a loveless marriage, included conceiving a child through an affair with a publisher, before leaving for New York.

It was Pagett's idea to exit the series because she said she "didn't want to be known for one thing only."

I remember watching U/D as a high school student in the early 1970s and being deliciously scandalized by Elizabeth's storylines!  I was sad to see Pagett leave the series, as Elizabeth was a more interesting character than her brother, James (though Simon Williams was dishy in the role).  But I understand Pagett's wish to move on to other things.

I remember reading eons ago that she suffered from manic depression (bipolar syndome), like her talented and tempestuous predecessor, Vivien Leigh.  I'm glad that Pagett didn't appear to suffer long after her brain tumor diagnosis.  She was a unique talent.
