  1. As someone who dissected more starfish in the 1990s than was, perhaps, strictly necessary (in marine biology camp (oh yes), AP Bio, and freshman year zoology lab) I want to note another dumb thing about the stupid "Dylan releases the starfish" retcon story: the starfish that you dissect are not alive, they come preserved from Carolina Biological Supply or whatever. So I am forced to conclude that Dylan just dumped a big bucket of dead starfish and formalin into the bay. Nice work!
  2. I had kind of a hybrid graduation - we had a big convocation with all grads (~2000 including grad students?) where we just sat grouped by department (or maybe by school? who remembers), with the speeches and the honorary degrees and such, and then we had a separate departmental graduation an hour or two later where we had to sit in alphabetical order and we walked and got our diplomas and photo-ops. I ended up being alphabetically seated next to a friend who I didn't even realize was in my major! (Major: Biology. Now I'm a software developer and he's a news anchor. So maybe it's not surprising that we didn't know we were in the same major.)
  3. OMG that fake jeweler voice! Giving me intense cringe flashbacks (Post Embarrassment Stress Disorder?) to my high school's production of Cabaret and benched-for-the-season hockey players attempting to do German accents (you had to do an activity every season, so if you couldn't play hockey your winter options were community service, theater, or managing one of the other teams).
  4. That cookie arrangement isn't just a waste of time, it's a waste of cookies! That's like four open boxes of cookies!
  5. Ten minutes into the fourth episode of The Defenders I was like, "Why didn't we just start here?" But then not much happened in the fourth or fifth episodes either. How can an eight-episode show be so flabby? How can the actress who plays Electra be so boring? What a turd.
  6. I am also a former library employee and I found Sam's shelving scenes maddening! Why are they storing chained books on the same shelf as unchained books? Where are the tables/shelves for reading the chained books, which seem to be on very short chains? Why aren't the special forbidden maester books chained up? And anyways half the point of a chained library is that you don't have to reshelve! Worst chained library since Doctor Strange!* *(In which the chains seemed to be basically little book seatbelts, not actually locked or attached to the books.)
  7. I used to work at a small New England college (not one of the ones you've heard of) that has an annual event called "Spring Event." The Goo Goo Dolls were the featured act at Spring Event 2010, which led to some serious soul-searching on my part and, I hope, theirs.
  8. Well thanks to this podcast I now know that my fiancé has seen Powerman 5000 live at least five or six times, including multiple shows at the Worcester Palladium (Worcester might be Boston's Etobicoke).
  9. I'm going to guess it's along the lines of a few long floral 90s skirts I myself owned and wore, where there were buttons all the way up the front. Not that that explains why the buttons are unbuttoned (besides the obvious "to show off the stupid brace" reason).
  10. OK, this is obscure to the point of ridiculousness, but I would love to see miniseries or limited series about German developmental biologists in the 1920s and 30s, specifically people in Hans Spemann's lab. * They're doing SUPER-CREEPY but really interesting and ultimately important experiments (creating conjoined-twin embryos, trying to get fish to turn inside out), * They're Jews (e.g. Salome Glueckson-Waelsch) and Nazis (Otto Mangold) in Weimar Germany * They're women getting undermined and assigned shit work (the aforementioned Gluecksohn-Waelsch and Hilde Mangold) by the openly misogynistic Spemann; Spemann ends up getting a Nobel Prize for work mostly done by Hilde Mangold who * Died in a gas boiler explosion at age 25, which is usually described as an accident but which Gluecksohn-Waelsch said was suicide and iirc one of my college professors (a historian of science) thought was murder, though I don't remember who was supposed to be the murderer (she had lots of other good stories about these people too, and how they were all having creepy affairs with each other and having illegitimate children with each other and stuff). Actually it could be a great anthology series of women scientists getting treated like shit, dying young, and then men getting the Nobel Prize for their work. Next up, Watson/Crick/Franklin!
  11. I find a lot of occasions to say "Daddy made a lot of crazy promises!"
  12. OK, so did Kelly and Colin take Erin to the doctor or anything? After she drowned and wasn't breathing for a couple of minutes, and after Colin did chest compressions (which would probably have left her pretty freaking bruised if he was doing it right)? SHE WAS UNCONSCIOUS FROM ASPHYXIA! YOU DON'T HANG UP THE PHONE ON 911 JUST BECAUSE SHE COUGHED A COUPLE OF TIMES!
  13. Is the Rose Court "lucky dress" tradition a real thing or just something made up so that wardrobe didn't have to come up with a change of clothes for 20 extras? I'm curious! Also just now realizing I wore something very similar to Angry Mumsy Extra #3's blush pants situation to my high school graduation, only in white.
  14. In spite of not being allowed to watch most of these cartoons or own the toys during my 80s childhood, I did pretty well on this Game Time. TAKE THAT MOM AND DAD! Really disappointed that Hugs and Tugs, the baby Care Bears and arguably the most inappropriately-named characters on any children's cartoon, didn't make it into Game Time. Also, when I looked Hugs and Tugs up to make sure I hadn't imagined them, I learned that there was an episode called "A Day Without Tugs." Filth! And yet my parents did let us have Care Bears.
  15. Just want to thank you Dave for getting me to look up the wikipedia entry on Starlight Express, otherwise I would never have known that it's basically a coked-up musical ripoff of Thomas the Tank Engine.
