    S01.E03: Infinite Pastabilities

    Has anyone else noticed how destroyed the burners in the top level kitchen look? Those things were not made for cooking. It is funny listening to the cheftestants rave about how nice it looks when it must look even worse in person than it does on television.

    Yes! Imagining the semi-finals where chefs in the basement kitchen get an empty platform and it becomes a Yellowjackets crossover.

    I love the blindfold challenge. Always surprising that the potters don’t try it at least once before coming on the show, because by now it’s assumed they will have to. 

    I miss Siobhan. Ellie is fine, but she doesn’t seem to connect as well to the potters. 

    Anyone else cringe every time they tried to hang their clocks? The scraping noise and the stress that one might fall was not enjoyable to watch.

    Invasion - General Discussion

    The most exciting part of this show is trying to guess how bright I need to make my screen to see anything.

    I have zero sympathy or interest in any of the characters. I liked Mitsuki’s storyline at the beginning but, like everything else, it’s sooo slow and her sole personality trait is a one-dimensional obsession with finding her girlfriend despite the entire world being under attack. Aliens are killing everybody. Who cares if Hinata is hanging out in outer space. 

    The navy seal is a laughable with how angry he is at everything. How did he get anywhere in life when his sole interactions with other humans is yelling f***  and threatening to shoot them. He should be thankful the british didn’t arrest or shoot him at the airbase with how ridiculously aggressive he was.   

    I am thankful we are out of the lord of the flies crater, but it turns out I miss Spiderman’s baby brother, the bully. At least that kid had a personality. 

    Aneesha’s character is frustrating. She went from bear mom to dishrag with zero interest in watching her own kids. It’s the end of the world and people around you keep dying, maybe keep an eye on your children. 

    At this point I am rooting for the aliens to win. They at least seem to have a plan and take action.

    How were Guiseppe and Juergen in line for star baker? Juergen may have produced nice ice cream but his macarons were a disaster. They may have tasted nice, but being the actual baked bit in this weird challenge they surely can't let he made the most basic of errors. And he was second to last in the technical (serving them sausage rolls with a garnish of green carpet).
    Guiseppe made a right mess of his showstopper and his ice cream in the signature.

    Apart from the size, the judges didn't have anything bad to say about Lizzie's ice cream cookies, and they also loved Chrystelle's. They even had some criticism for Chigs'. Chrystelle was dead last in the technical. Was Lizzie's cake not as good as they made it sound (because they didn't dare criticise it??)?
    The editing of the episode was awful. Either let all of them progress to the semis or edit it so the elimination is somewhat plausible, but highlighting Juergen's struggles without the judges even considering him anything but SB material is really annoying.

    I completely agree with all of this. Based on what we saw, the sole excuse they had to eliminate Lizzie over three of the others was based on previous week’s performance, which is not how this show is supposed to be judged. My feeling, and I do not think I am alone in this, is the powers at be at GBBO never imagined a person as different as Lizzie getting that close to winning. She does not fit their brand, so they cut her despite her bakes being better than the others.

    Fyi: Kraftwerk chose that red and black look on purpose as a reference to nazis. It is not a coincidence people are feeling a hitler influence. The band themselves were making a statement in their clothing choice which Noel and Matt imitated.

    S12.E05: German Week

    Jürgen made challah as his “yeasted cake” and you cannot convince me otherwise. It looked identical to a Guinness (or other stout) challah with a filling, right down to the egg wash. Who egg washes a cake? When the judges described the taste, they described challah. 

    I found it strange the different tiers of the cakes that the judges chose to cut into. For George, they picked the one they knew would be raw, for Freya, one they knew would be drier, etc. 

    Any idea what illness Noel came down with before final judging? Matt should have done it alone without saying Noel was sick. They provided only enough information to make it mysterious and make everyone curious.

    I agree Kunal should not have gone, but I think Alina should have. Her signature bake was completely undercooked and her showstopper was inedible. She did worse in the technical than Kunal. He only had the wrong number because one fell (and unlike GBBO, they don’t let you pick it up off the ground), while she literally cannot count. Also I never like when someone’s decoration comes right out of a mold and other contestants take risks or make things by hand. Either way, I don’t see her lasting long.

    Steve’s bee cake was adorable, and he rightly was star baker.

    I watched the first two episodes. My rambling thoughts: I do not understand where the “comedy” is. So far the dead fish is the only character I have found any sympathy for. That and maybe the niece whose aunt is such an a$$hole that she didn’t bother to buy her a birthday present. Kate’s character started as unlikeable and by the end of the second episode is utterly despicable. The actress playing Toni is amazing in her role, which has been the only highlight. Not sure if I am going to bother watching episode three.

    Halloween Baking Championship - General Discussion

    The names they give cereal to avoid copyright issues are a riot. Flaky corn? Fruit rings?

    How are there still bakers who don’t blind bake the crust for a pie? Every time it trips someone up. The tropical fruit sounded delicious. Too bad the crust was inedible.

    Tomato cake? Seriously? I know it’s a thing, but have they ever had such an out there ingredient for only one contestant? His vampire story in the first round did not make sense to me.

    Surprised a pumpernickel cake beat out cake flavored cake. Her decoration was my favorite, so I guess I can see why. I was not a fan of tooth tentacle thing. It felt like sci fi to me more than horror, literally the sarlacc from Star Wars.

    Siobhan’s voiceover said she was using hakeme, which is really beautiful when done properly. Simple but elegant. Shenyu’s design was just messy. And she didn’t follow her own advice of not going over a stroke twice. 
     

    I don’t understand why she refused to put her things in the drying room. Keith’s face when she claimed two minutes of a heat gun does the same was priceless. If not for Peter’s help, I wonder if she would have even had pots to glaze. 
     

    Poor Adam. Keith does not like his aesthetic. His mushroom house was stunning a few weeks ago, and his tiles this week were the best by far.

    Very excited about this new season. Interesting  they added Alan Carr’s name to it. Maybe more people will watch this series. 

    Love Micaela, former doctor Peter, and Jon with no confidence who gets his inspiration from drag. 

    The sooner Charlotte is gone, the better. “You need the designer to build the entirety of your plan for the room? No. I need him more to screw something basic in and remove plastic as I lie on the mattress recovering from all the energy I expended being so passive aggressive. I couldn’t possibly do physical labor myself.”

    Anyone else watch the covid special?

    Elaine was still trying to control how DeSean gets to feel. It was heartbreaking seeing how she thought he should just comply and to see how much emotion DeSean has been repressing. His Hulk metaphor was so apt. He lives his life pleasing everyone to be safe in a world where people’s implicit biases and attitudes make him unsafe. 

    I am glad Sam and Lauren are still together and even gladder they decided against a baby as a bandaid on the relationship. Seeing them in their backyard of their new house felt like a happily ever after. 

    The new couples didn’t suck me in but it was only an hour long. The cop felt like he was trying to stay distant and didn’t want anyone to see any vulnerability, including his choice to play the xbox all day over parenting. It was great to see how he finally bonded with his son though. 

    The actress was annoying and emasculating, but given her husband’s multiple affairs I can understand how she would feel negatively towards being physical with him. But seriously who thinks sex after marriage is going to be in fancy hotel rooms with rose petals every time. I guess a girl whose been with the same guy since kindergarten. It was interesting to watch them realize time apart wasn’t their problem. His supporting her half marathon was cute. 

    Wish we had gotten an update on Mau and Annie.

    Also, it would have been nice if the show introduced on the gay couple they kept showing shirtless or any of the other couples at the beginning. Can you imagine finding out your relationship problems are so boring that you didn't make it into the episode?

    I don’t know how many episodes you’ve watched yet. After watching the first six, my explanation is

    The judging is absurdly sexist with four women of color being eliminated first, and even after that the judges are reluctant to eliminate any of the men no matter how much worse their work is than the women’s.

    After the car challenge, Elizabeth rolling her eyes and calling out Kristen’s obviously facetious falling on the ground as drama felt very mean girl to me.

    The women were being judged against a much higher standard than the men, which was blatant during Schentelle’s elimination.

    Overall, it is amazing to see some of the incredible things the contestants come up with, and I enjoy the clips with advice from the judges. I would never reflex a tulip though. I much prefer how they look closed. If you want an open flower, use a flower that is meant to open, but I guess that’s just me.

    The house tour literally gave me Show PTSD and made me mad all over again at the show's outcome.

    Her hallway is the same vomit green as the paint she chose on the show. Ha. Looking at her color choices, it does seem like she might be a little color-blind. I truly do not comprehend anyone feeling “at home” in those garish rooms.

    S11.E10: The Final

    When Laura said she was added to acidic juices to her gelatin, I yelled at the television that it wouldn’t set. How do people at this level not know too low pH denatures gelatin? Add to that how strange is was that Paul blamed her using “too many flavours” when it was the acid of the flavors that caused the issue. 
    I thought Dave should have won. Peter makes a good winner too since he excelled throughout the competition. All my favorites were eliminated week after week. 
    I still miss Sandy.

    Portrait Artist Of The Year - General Discussion

    Anyone else watching the new series? Usually I’m yelling at the judges about their terrible choices (although not as much as during Landscape). This week, however, I completely agreed with the winner. 
    The social distancing was subtle, like the judges keeping back from the artists and no handshakes or cheek kisses from the celebrity sitters. And I really didn’t mind the lack of spectators at all.
