And it gave them a chance to chastise Tessa.

I could get in contact with my former junior high school Home Ec teacher from 25-odd years ago and ask if unfinished hems would have gotten me a failing grade in the sewing portion of the proceedings.  I bet she would say yes.

It's strange to me to bring back the eliminated designers to "help." They were gone because they weren't very good. It seemed for this challenge they were in the way more often than not. And they need to stop with the way they're letting designers choose who they get or which model they get, etc. It's juvenile; this is a professional design competition, not elementary school recess.

I wonder if with these types of shows where there are two parts to filming and there is a gap of several weeks in between (in this case, this is the part that comprises the weeks prior to Fashion Week), in order to prevent spoilers the eliminated contestants just stick around, but in other nearby locations?  They're just sitting around and the producers give them something to do for an episode?

Yes, I’m aware that she had immunity. Wasn’t she in the bottom a few weeks ago even though she had immunity?

Yes, which meant the bottom 3 was really the bottom 2.  It will be seen if another round of making a mockery out of immunity when it's known she did it before comes back to bite her now that immunity no longer exists.

Not only that, but contestants have to pay their own airfare and hotel, transportation around town, meals, etc. I’ve heard that personally from three different chefs.

I had heard that once too; thanks for the confirmation.

The Viewers Choice episode is being re-run right now, but I peaced out after the intro segments when one chef proclaimed himself the "dictator" of his kitchen and bragged about having a "Wall of Tears" (or similar) where he posted the names of anyone who cried.  WTF?  If dictator is your preferred style of leadership, get stuffed, and if employees crying for reasons other than they found out on the job their mom died is enough of an occurrence you can keep track, go find a fire and die in it.  I thought of hanging around in the hopes he got his ass handed to him, but decided I didn't want to waste a minute of my life on him.

Did he lose?  Preferably knocked out in the first round in spectacular fashion?

    Yay for On Demand!

He owns a Greek restaurant in CT.

He was knocked out in the 2nd round.  His first round appetizer was received lukewarmly by the judges but it was enough to get him through.  In the 2nd round (bitter melon, raspberry vinaigrette, generic Hamburger Helper, and Balut), his pork and Balut meatballs were well-received but his mac and cheese was "flat", he paired bitter melon with bitter greens in a salad without something to balance out the intense flavors, and he made pasta in the first round as well, so buh-bye.

The bald guy with the beard also committed sins with the bitter melon (it was too bitter, especially being combined with raw onion in the dish) but the judges decided that overall he sinned less.  He wound up winning the episode.

Other than some pretentious convicted felons using chopsticks, I honestly think overall, the judges take themselves less seriously than they used to.  Alex was a walking stinkeye, Geoffrey was a snobby spice-o-phobe, Scott was of course in mortal rage over a red onion.  Most of the judges, most of the time, were downright unpleasant.  You would have thought they were judging the Nuremberg trials.  Some of them still have their grumpy quirks, but mostly they're not as nasty as they used to be.

I agree that it's not the show it used to be.  We lost a lot when they decided to run more commercials and more talking heads and eliminate showing the judging after each round.  We lost a lot when every show featured a gimmick instead of showcasing chefs' creativity.  I couldn't tell you any of the Chopped Champions winners for the past several years.  We'll probably never have anything like the Madison vs. Lance showdown, or a Lance vs. Yoanne demonstration of humanity.  We don't need grandma competitions, or kids, or D-list celebrities.  We need interesting baskets, talented chefs, and meaningful prizes.

The evidence that nobody cares is right here.  We have just over 60 posts in four months, when talking about every Chopped challenge used to be a Wednesday morning ritual.  Half the time I'll skip the show completely, or FF from the entree round right to the last cheftestant walking down the hall of shame after dessert.

IMO, probably the biggest thing that helped get the judges to lighten up a bit was having them compete.  Prior to that they sat there in judgement without really knowing what it was like to stand under studio lights with a camera always in your face, a short countdown clock, and judges yelling for you to put something on the plate.  And these are people used to being on camera, so imagine if this was your first time on national TV.  Yes, I realize quite a few of them have competed on Iron Chef America, including as Iron Chefs, and Maneet competed on a season of Next Iron Chef, but even the ICs have said appearing on Chopped is a completely different experience.

I'll add that I agree with the need for "meaningful prizes."  They need to increase the $10,000 prize, especially since a chunk of it is going straight to the taxman.  But I'm not sure if adding things like kitchen equipment would be a good idea, because the taxes on those would be the responsibility of the contestant and if they can't/won't pay them they would have to forfeit the prize.  Just ask anybody who has won prizes on a TV game show, or recall the debacle that resulted from Oprah's car giveaway way back when.

No. There were those who were called "lucky," though.

I liked the hot pink look the most.

I did a quick look over ye olde internet earlier and from what I gather this may have only been the 3rd time in PR history an immune designer wound up in the bottom 3 and therefore got critiqued, vs. the usual, "Tut, tut, you're lucky to be safe."

Is it just me, or did Karlie’s outfit during the runway show look like Jamal’s “waitress tuxedo” outfit from last week ?

I had the same thought, and also thought she was making a veiled statement since one of the questions last week about his outfit was whether a bra had been available.

I wonder who has to clean up that messy workroom at the end of the day/episode?  lol

    Bring in a leaf blower.

Or perhaps Shop Vac could become a sponsor of the show.

Yes, Hester sent a disaster down the runway, but she did it because she knew she couldn’t be eliminated. It was done knowing it was going to be in the bottom and talked about. It was an attention seeking ploy.

Yes, and her body language during the critiquing and the elimination part screamed it.

  11. Hester, who is immune this week, is planning on making a sheer top that will include pasties, said,  "I've been obsessed with making pasties elegant."

    Christian is rather dubious.

And in the irony department, there is going to be a photo shoot of the models for a flash sale.

Edit:  I will not mention what happens during the dressing for the runway, but oh dear.

  12. I'm not surprised by the result, just because of the editing.  Certain comments that were made at the beginning about how $250 was either not a lot of money for fabric or was a lot of money for fabric, for example, and the edits carried through the show.  Just before the winners and losers were announced and she hit the floor crying, I knew Frankie was staying.

They're no longer involved with it.  If I recall, they're now working to produce a show for Amazon.

I have Bravo on today and they are running a marathon before the new show tonight (squee!). I'd forgotten just how annoying Kenley's voice is.

And they may want to do some editing of the final episode for future airings, since sitting in the front row is Harvey Weinstein and he appears on screen during Kenley's runway show, albeit briefly.

Who won the chicken challenge (OAD 2/19/19)?? Our DVR recorded a black screen for the last 4 minutes.

Dallas beat Erica (I put the reason for her chopping in the spoiler box).  BTW, they're rerunning the episode this Thursday at 9 eastern and a few hours later at midnight eastern.

    Spoiler

She was chopped because most of the skin on her pouillon (sp?) in the 2nd round stuck to the grill pan and didn't make it onto the plates, which meant the bird lost a lot of its flavor and dried out a bit.  That was considered a bigger sin than Dallas' lack of salt in his gnocchi.  Also, the fried rice didn't show up a whole lot in her dessert granola.
