  1. Based on the evidence tonight, I think the answer is "yes." Tony Shaloub maintains the streak for lovely, meaningful, and heartfelt speeches by people from The Band's Visit
  2. Once On This Island for the win! I'm so very excited for them (though not nearly as excited as they were - I really don't think they expected to win).
  3. The Once On This Island performance was amazing! By far, it is my favorite one of the night (I'm not counting "Seasons of Love" by the MDS students, since that is in an untouchable category by itself). I hadn't thought a lot about Alex Newell as a performer, but now I understand why so many critics were confused by the fact that he wasn't nominated for a Tony for this.
  4. I tend to be cynical when it comes to "In Memoriam" segments, but "For Forever" is like a dog whistle for my soul. By the end of this broadcast, I will be all cried out.
  5. He looks more and more like a Muppet each time I see him.
  6. They don't, which is a shame. I had heard on the "Today on Broadway" broadcast that they were going to show it on the broadcast, but I guess not.
  7. They didn't present the Lifetime Achievement awards to Chita Rivera and Andrew Lloyd Webber during the telecast!?! Who made that call?
  8. And I think he's on his way to getting a 3rd EGOT. I believe he needs another Emmy and another Oscar, since he has three Grammys and three Tonys.
  9. Glenda Jackson's speech about how welcoming the people in this country made me unexpectedly tear up. I'm hoping that Frozen will be a palate-cleanser to help me get through the rest of the evening without crying.
  10. I have a love-hate relationship with "Seasons of Love" (it is a great song but it can be cliched). However, it was probably the most perfect choice for the Parkland performance.
  11. While I've been meh on Spongebob, it is starting to win me over. I must say that I enjoyed its performance more than the other Best Musical/Revival of a Musical ones so far.
  12. I stage managed a community theatre production of the show once upon a time, and I thought this during every performance. That said, I think that Amy Schumer gave the most accurate description of the show ever.
  13. That is perfect! I thought they all look like hipsters, which makes me think the unofficial setting is New York (it works with your Rent reference!), San Francisco, or Portland.
  14. This video makes me so very happy! Also, a few stray thoughts: The more I see of Jean-Luc Baker, the more I like him. Mariah Bell is adorable (and looks all of 13 or 14 here). It was great seeing Gracie look so happy and at ease.
  15. They better watch out, since the V/M secret baby bloggers might be in search of a new couple. However, since H/D seem to want to be the next V/M (complete with sex faces, though I'd argue that H/D's seem even more contrived), perhaps they wouldn't mind so much.
  16. I can imagine Tanith White saying this verbatim.
  17. I support this as well! Rather than having multiple teams skating to the usual standards (ahem... Moulin Rouge), perhaps we could get them skating to the long-neglected oeuvre of "Weird Al" Yankovic. He has so many polka parodies that there would be a lot to choose from :). Also, I can't help but think that this could lead to the issue seen The Cutting Edge, when the favored team at Nationals got tangled in the guy's lederhosen.
  18. They do have a tendency to choke in the free dance (the exception being nationals this year), so I'm hoping that their nerves/ cockiness gets them. Like Chicksdigscars, it's the first time I've actively rooted against a skater from the U.S., but I just can't with the two of them. The overwrought expressions also annoy me to no end.
  19. Thank you to everyone who commented and recapped that Hubbell and Donahue interview. I can't even bring myself to read it because of the tone I got from the quotes included in the posts. The petty part of me hopes they fall (preferably numerous times) while C/B, C/L, and Weaver/Poje skate lights out in the free dance. I honestly don't care who gets a medal as long as H/D don't get one because I'm over the bitchy entitlement.
  20. With "Roxanne" from Moulin Rouge mixed in for good measure.
  21. I never cared for Sandra Bezic's commentary. In addition to her wordy (and vapid) remarks, I also found her to vacillate between ridiculous sentimentality and bitchiness. I can tolerate Johnny more than Sandra because, for all of his snark and bias, he can actually add something substantive to the conversation.
  22. Watching the "Return to" highlights is fascinating. Since I know how the skaters did, I can pay attention to the little details (as opposed to watching my favorites through my fingers). The best thing so far is watching the little boys and girls who pick up the flowers and toys between skaters clap to "Paradise" when the Shib Sibs were skating. It isn't really a song that is easy to clap to, but I appreciate their enthusiasm.
  23. The Olympic Channel is now showing highlights from the team event. I'm glad that it is doing this - I was scared of figure skating withdrawal until Worlds :).
  24. I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this thread. In fact, it made the Olympics for me! I've lurked here and on the TWOP (R.I.P.) boards for a very long time, but this is the first time I've participated. Thanks for the great, insightful, and often very funny commentary and for putting up with a posting neophyte.
  25. Going along with her age, she hasn't been on the senior level very long. The other skaters probably don't know her very well, which adds to the disconnect.
