Jamie does not want Claire to leave, as he likes her/wants her/is in love with her already. I hope that is not spoilery.

A more pragmatic reason is that the woods are full of guards so it would be hard to slip by undetected.  Jamie tells Claire that Colum wouldn't leave his castle completely unprotected with all of the clansmen inside and drunk to boot.

Yes, I got that.  But he was given to another MacKenzie family, and I wondered what happened to Hammish’s descendants and why Roger was shown as descended directly from Colum.

Where was it shown that he was descended from Colum?

I think that’s why they used a Celtic cross rather than a Roman one a North American audience would associate with the KKK. But yes, Claire & Brianna are white, Claire was even not raised in the USA, and Bree was raised in Boston. They aren’t going to have the same visceral reaction you or I would have to a burning cross.

Well, that particular Scottish tradition is what was corrupted by the KKK in their crossburnings.  I think that the producers were smart to use a Celtic cross.  They said that they figured it would disturb people less.

Am I correct that STARZ.com is now dead?  When I go to the site I just get a black screen (and if I go to STARZplay.com it take me to an Arabic-language version of the site, which is REALLY weird.)

I see that Amazon Prime now has a pay-for-content deal for STARZ.  Is that what happened?  Did the deal with Amazon Prime kill STARZ.com?  If so that's a shame because I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes Outlander videos that used to be posted on STARZ.com, which I guess I don't get to watch anymore.

Amazon Prime has all these channels that you can subscribe to, one of which is Starz. Because I have Starz through AP, I was unaware that there was pay-per-view Starz content available.

Was there any mention of Frank at all at the wedding? Yes, Jamie is Brianna's father, but for 18, 19 or so years, if she thought about getting married, it was probably Frank she pictured walking her down the aisle. Of course, I was at a large watch party and no closed-captioning, so it might have been there.  Just struck me as kind of sad.

Claire and Brianna discussed Frank briefly, while Claire was helping her dress.

    It’s Roger. No “d” in his name.😉

I did find it amusing that the baby kept interrupting Jamie and Claire’s loving time.😆

I think that was intentional to show us that Jamie and Claire never got to raise a baby together and never had to deal with such things.  It was sweet.

Although I laughed when Roger told Jocasta to shove her money up her arse, the practical part of me wanted to remind him of what he and Jamie had just talked about that morning - Roger has no useful skills that would bring an income during this time period. He now has a wife and child to support and no job. I'm not saying he should be a kiss ass just to get Jocasta's money but seeing as his financial prospects at present are "sponge off the in-laws" (one of whom thinks he has hair ticks - hahaha), maybe not losing your temper with one of your wife's few relatives is something to consider. Then again, Jocasta loved it so what the hell do I know?

She owns slaves - that's the main reason they don't want her money. They also don't want to be beholden to her, because she isn't entirely trustworthy.

It seems like people either loved the episode or thought it dragged. I liked it, my mother hated it. The S4 premiere was a bit clunky, then the action picked up, so I'm assuming the same will happen with S5.

I didn't understand Jocasta's motivation for getting Roger all riled up? Was she trying to determine his true feelings for Jem?

Yes. She was testing his character.

Well to be fair to ole Rodge-- he has 20th century skilz-- 18th century? not so much. He is a man out of time to be sure.

There is no way I would survive a month in that time period. I feel for Roger.

He might be better off in a city.  It's the wilderness, more than the year, that is his problem right now.

I liked the episode a lot. I realized that it's the first Outlander episode in a while that didn't piss me off.  Except the house. That pisses me off.

According to the various social media accounts that are Outlander related. STARZ has released the season five premiere episode early for Valentine’s Day as of 12 AM EST, Friday the 14th.

Sweet! That means it's available at 9pm on the west coast!

    Edit: Actually, it's available now!

I'm very confused with all things regarding titles.

I get that Harry will always be a Prince and that title can't be taken from him, but....

The whole "they will not use their HRH (His/Her Royal Highness) titles" which makes it sound like both Harry & Meghan get to keep the HRH titles, but they just can't use them? Why would the firm allow? Is it just because it sounds nicer then "Harry & Meghan have been striped of the HRH titles?" However, I've also read that they lost their HRH title? So which is the truth?

I'm also confused why the firm would allow Harry & Meghan to continue to use Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles. Weren't those given to them?  If they don't want to continue their royal duties why allow them to keep the titles?

Harry military titles. I don't understand how he can lose these? Didn't he earn them during his time in the military or were these bestowed on him due to him being a Prince?

I am confused, but I don't understand the in and outs of the British titles etc.

The way I understand it (vaguely, I admit) is that His/Her Royal Highness aren't titles. They're styles.  They will no longer style themselves as, for exaple, His Royal Highness, Harry, the Duke of Sussex.  Instead he'll just be the Duke of Sussex.  More or less.

  10. I only saw the first 30 minutes or so but I was vaguely amused.  My biggest problem here is that I don't give shit one for Alice in the best of times.  Angsty, depressed Alice is too much to bear.

Although, I have to say that the actress killed it when Alice opened the door and saw Julia.  The way her face fell was subtle and perfect.

ETA: Apparently, The Sun had published a story on this the day before and framed it as 'speculation'. Which confirms the rumour that they did it to beat the papers is incorrect.

Or, they did it to get ahead of the speculation by getting some facts out there.

It reminds me of church music (but not my style of church music).  I guess it just feels like a stark contrast to the other season.

But I need to stop being negative and just relax and allow myself to get used to it.  It will probably grow on me.

Maybe once we see the season, it will make sense but for now I am extremely perplexed.  There are all kinds of interesting early American ways they could have gone but choral music? I'm not seeing it.

Edit: Is someone other than Bear McCreary doing the music now?

Another edit: No, he's credited on IMDB.  I want to know his rationale for the change before I judge it harshly.

I wonder if that's the cross they're going to burn and I wonder if its elaborate design is intended to reduce the ick factor of the burning cross.

Yeah, I thought that was pretty stupid, too.  I mean, the whole outfit would look out of place to anyone who looked close enough - they didn't have machine stitching yet.

According to the costume designer, that's intentional.  Her clothes ARE going to be a big different from what everyone else is wearing.  Even clothes that she has made there are chosen/influenced by her modern aesthetic.   Look at the Dior-styled suit she wore in Paris, for instance.  She would have worked with a dressmaker to make that outfit and we can see the 20th century clear as day.

Question on the timeline...  Claire is preparing to leave right around Christmas.  But when she gets back to 1700's Scotland, it certainly isn't winter - looks more like late fall or early spring.  Do the stones also change up the calendar months/days (not just the year)?

Also, why would Jamie live in a brothel, when he has a very large printshop all to himself?  Wouldn't it make more sense for him to just have a small living space there?

Other than those quirks, I liked the reunion.  Loved the new Fergus, too.

I'm not sure if this is made clear in the show, but I know that it's at least mentioned.  He's trying to separate his identities.  He doesn't want people to know Jamie Fraser, Smuggler is the same person as Alexander Malcolm, Printer and Purveyor of Treasonous Documents.

And he does have living space in the print shop.

I just realised that there is a high possibility that the next season (if there is one) will be quite Anne heavy....I mean, most of the "big events" in her life happened in the 1970s, and there is a little bit of everything in it.

      Reveal spoiler

Marriage, riding successes, an attempted kidnapping….

Honestly, they maybe should have skipped to all those events this season. Would have been more interesting than another pity tour for Margareth and Philip.

They are already shooting season 4.

Well, whatever the reason was, the one given in the show makes zero sense. Why the hell should the MI-5 try to hide the existence of the spy to preserve trust when the information about him came from the Americans in the first place.

That might be the point.  This was going on right under MI-5's noses and they missed it.  They needed to be told by folks who were clear across the ocean.

I think he will always be remembered for wanting to be Camilla's tampon, and for marrying Diana and making marriage vows, in the church he will be "leading" all the while knowing he would never keep those "sacred vows" since he was still carrying on an affair with the now future Queen of England.  Camilla can get her hair fixed and dress well, and act well, but she will always be the adulterer who aided in the ruination of Diana's marriage and life.

Charles and his now wife can't erase what they both did, and no, I doubt the monarchy will survive if he doesn't die before the Queen.

I'm not implying Diana was some kind of saint, but that doesn't excuse or explain Camilla and Charles' deliberate and callous behavior.

With William and Kate?  Maybe, but even with them?  I think it's over.

I'm just curious - are you British?  As an American, I can see now that Charles and Diana's wedding should never have happened.  Charles was basically forced into it and was not allowed to marry the woman of his choosing.  Also, Diana was not only not a saint, she was far from being a saint.

I used to hate Charles for what I thought he did to Diana but the more I learn about it, the easier it is to forgive him and be happy that he finally found happiness with the woman he always loved.

It also doesn't hurt that he probably won't be king for an extended period, due to his age, and he has an heir(William) people are fond of. Even if they hate Charles, people are not going to take the monarchy from Princess Diana's son and grandchildren.

Well, both of Charles' parents are living well into their 90's so it's not unreasonable to assume that he could be king for a good twenty years, maybe more.  He's only 71 now.

I think that when William succeeds him is when we'll really see a lot of change.  Well, I probably won't see it because I'm old but  I imagine that things will be increasingly modernized in a William & Kate reign. .

The overlap between Outlander and Midsomer Murders continues.  Episode 5 of Season 20 of Midsomer Murders features Colin McFarlane (Outlander's Ulysses) and Episode 6 features Andrew Gower (Outlander's "Bonnie" Prince Charles Edward Stuart).  And of course every episode this season features Annette Badland (Outlander's Mrs. Fitzgibbons) in her recurring role as the medical examiner/coroner.

It was really quite mind-trippy for me so see all that overlap.

Sam Heughan and Tobias Menzies also show up in that show. It's wild.
