If she took out the dagger only to kill herself if the walking dead got her before rescue came, she and Tyrion wouldn't have come out from behind the tomb, weapons in hand - they would've stayed right where they were until either the walking dead found them or rescue came. They both got up and left their hiding place.

This. They both had a moment to acknowledge that they would die by fighting back and they did it anyway or were prepared to do that before all the dead collapsed. I call that bravery.

I'm calling it now.  Someone is going to do a mash-up of this episode inter-cut with scenes from Lord the the Rings, in which the lighting of the Dothraki swords is going to lead directly to the lighting of the beacons of Minas Tirith.  What will follow will be a mashup between this battle and battle for Helms Deep.  Seriously, this NEEDS to happen.

hehehe. When the trench was lit, I yelled, "The beacons are lit!" and my son yelled, "Gondor calls for aid!"

  3. My stomach actually hurt watching the episode. Not just the first time I watched it but even when we took a break and watched it again right before bed.

My first feeling: I felt satisfied. It was good television and I felt like I didn’t even need anything else. Like I wasn’t even invested in what happens after the rest of the series.

Of course, I have questions and thoughts 😊

-LOVED the parallel of Arya using the dagger right at the spot where Bran gave it to her. Dem skills, girl! Bran being chill cuz he knew what was coming.

-Jorah got his hero death. “I’m hurt.”

-Theon broke my heart. It was so generous of Bran to give him those words right before he dies. Alfie Allen has grown tremendously as an actor.

-Dany proves that yeah, she’ll make plans with you but in the end, she will do what she wants.

(why didn’t she carry weapons?! I’m glad she picked one up but a dragonglass dagger strapped to her boot would have been prudent.)

-Missendei? I don’t get her snippiness with Sansa. Yeah, loyalty, but Sansa didn’t really rag on Dany. It took me out of the moment.

    -THE MUSIC

-Sam being brave! Oh Edd is gone so now no more Night’s Watch. And with the Wall gone, everything will be restructured anyway.

-what was the Red Lady doing in that room with all the dead wights/soldiers? Just hanging by the fire, waiting to be spooky with Arya to get her to fulfill her destiny?

-the Hound def has PTSD, not just around fire but with all the death he’s wrought and his own death always just a swordfight away. He’s done. But he needs to fight his bro so I dunno…

-would have gladly given up a few cosmic dragon scenes in order to get more Ghost. I like that he was by Jorah. I think Ghost thought that was where he was needed?

-Tyrion and Sansa ready to die. I don’t want them to end up together but it looks like the show is shipping them hard.

-most touching moment: Drogon comforting Dany. He was making little kitty noises and it broke me.

ETA: Oh, Beric! My husband was like: dying like old school movie stars, bro. Good stuff.

more eta: great article posted about the lighting! we watched this with my son who is in film school atm so he was telling us all about frame rate, lighting, etc. We watched it around 8pm in our darkened living room.

one last eta: How could I forget Little Bear Lyanna! I was jumping up and down in my seat and my husband was like, "look, she's gonna kill that giant. Lyanna the Giantkiller's gonna get songs, it's okay...it's okay." LOL

What did Bran mean when he and Jon reunited and Jon said “You’re a man now” and Bran said almost or not yet or whatever it was. Was that just a random conversation or did it mean something more?

"Almost." I thought Bran was referring to the fact that he's in a wheelchair. Ah, masculinity.

I just watched the HBO Power is Power promo. Wow. Am I alone in thinking this was super cheesy and a bad idea?

But as the story progressed here, I did feel pity for her. She was so isolated, and every attempt to connect went badly.

    Re: Dany

There's a nice small acting moment I loved...Dany in her room after chewing out Tyrion and Jon ignoring her. She is irritated by a knock but relaxes and seems so visibly relieved that it's old pal Jorah come to speak with her. In that moment, you can see just how alone she is.

Sansa has shown that she is capable of running Winterfell very well, she has even shown that she is capable of being ruthless and playing the game.  However she lacks the ability to see the bigger picture"

This part in your post: totally agree. I think this is her Stark-ness showing.

  7. Ghost and Nymeria hooking up! That's my biggest "ship." I'd love a last scene of the show with new baby direwolves being born. Circle of life, and all that. Something Stark enduring.

I was a bit surprised that Maisie showed as much as she did but I think it was important for Gendry to see that Arya has scars, physically and psychologically. They are both older and have "lived." (Something, though, seemed like maybe cgi'd out in the ah, nipple area.)

    Thoughts:
    - Tormund continues to be the Gimli of GOT. That's not such a bad thing, tho.
    - Pod can sing as well as please da ladies! I want him with Sansa. She deserves someone who can help her heal from Ramsey.
    - I cried at least twice during this episode. I'm a big softie. (1- "Your father taught me how to be a man" and 2- Ser Brienne)
    - the Hound is always the Hound and I love that.
    - also loved everyone around the strategy table. Go, Team!
    - LOVED all the women getting their say right from the start of the episode (Note: Ser Jorah and Lady Mormont!! Too cute)
    - if Jamie fights alongside Brienne, the two sword parts of Ice will be together!
    - Jamie walked away and didn't hear Tyrion talk about killing Cersei...I think this is foreshadowing!
    - crypts ain't safe. I think that's obvious
    - loved seeing all the white walker leaders on horseback at the end. Very ominous and just a gorgeous shot.
    - I want Brienne to live and go around knighting women all over Westeros and Essos...I know that won't happen but I want it.
    - Please live: Sam/Gilly/LittleSam, Sansa, Pod, Gendry, Arya, Ghost, Nymeria, Bronn
    - Don't want them to die but I think they're doomed and/or need to die to serve plot: Theon, Ser Davos, Jorah, Miss/Grey, Jon, Jamie, Tyrion, Tormund, Drogon and Rhaegal, Dany and her baby, knights of the Vale guy from 4WeddingsAndAFuneral, head Dothraki guy

GOD, I wish they'd just released the whole season. I'm dying for spoilers. It's making my stomach hurt with anxiety LOL

I loved the increased isolation (physically and geographically) of Cersei.

We are set up to have some really epic final episodes. The storylines are compressing and everything is coming together. I am excited to see how it all ends.

I agree. Her big ass throne room, clean and empty and dark.

The spirals predate the Targeryans.   The Children of the Forest used a spiral pattern in their arrangement of rocks at the weirwood tree in the flashback where the Night King was created.  There was also a spiral design in the cave paintings that Jon and Dany saw on the walls of the cave at Dragonstone.  Those were supposed to be from the first people, if I recall correctly.

Right. Agreed. What I'm wondering is about how the *show* is trying to draw parallels between how that symbol has been used.

  10. I'll just note some little things I found interesting or liked or pondered over:

-didn't like how even when flirting and bantering with Jon, Dany has to keep on about being everyone's damn Queen. (keeping her warm when they did their little jaunt on the dragons)
-wtf show (re: Ned Umber...but LOVED his little peek out of the group of Northern men LOL)
-are the spirals too obviously like the Targ sigil? Is this a red herring? I don't trust this show at all LOL
-hope we get a cold open this last season
-Tyrion is walking around like Eeyore. I got a baaaad feeling about what will happen to him. Poor guy. He really just wants a family who loves him.
-Jamie's hair gets darker and darker...hmmmm was this deliberate as a subtle sign that he's moving away from his Lannister leanings?
-Yara and Theon? too easy. Or was this part of Euron's long game? Just fuck off back to the Iron Islands with surviving Greyjoys?
-did they build ramps in Winterfell for Bran?
-Maisie is a better actress than she used to be but still...not a fan. LOVE Arya and Maisie with Sophie Turner. But wish she were better able to give the audience something when it's required in a scene.
-little flashes of red with the red gloves and wee ascot thing in Dany's costume, Sansa's slightly more military look, Varys wearing Winterfell colors over his regular robes, Arya's cape-like thing giving her a look like her "dancing" coach...love the costuming
    -"You're a man." "Almost." Ouch!
-Lady Mormont...wanted to see her meet with Jorah so bad. Hopefully we get this at some point in the season. Loved the moment when she burns Jon and the men of the North are all, "daaaaamn," in the background
-what did Euron mean by "mute" when describing Golden Company?

  11. My Sunday group rewatch won't be able to catch up before the new season starts but I'm greedily consuming any and all GOT-related theories and backstories...I'm super interested in the history from the books only to help explain show character motivations.

As for the trailer and Arya speculation- what if she's running to get someplace quickly before something happens...like she needs something and that face is not really fear but desperation about getting something? I don't know if I'm explaining this the way it works in my head so sorry for that. I was watching some YouTuber last night talking about lightening up the dark trailer and seeing other people behind her. She looks back at one point. What if she is trying to lead people somewhere safe? I dunno. I think it's too "easy" to say that she's running from a wight. But who knows really?!

When you choose to tell a story like this convoluted back and forth between 3 time periods, there has to be a reason.  Not just that it's your thing.  I don't think they really have a reason, other than it's how they roll.

I was bored to tears.  Just get on with it!

You can have incredible character development and present your series in chronological order.  This isn't necessary.  It's making me think they have nothing to say.

All of this. It feels like a waste of good actors and the kernel of a good story.
