I actually found Billy more terrifying than the Upset Down threat because he seemed so unhinged, but yeah, this is an 80's tribute, so he was a one note villain who was swiftly defeated in a climactic fight.

Ugh, I HATED Billy. I was certain the whole time they were making him such a piece of shit because he was going to die and then he didn't (poor Bob) and I was so pissed! It's one thing to be a surly, misunderstood teen with parent issues, but he's a psychopath. And for me, that's no fun to watch. I was glad when Max got him towards the end.

Steve and Dustin are now my dream team. I loved every scene they had together.

  2. Count me as one of the people who didn't care for this episode. I didn't *hate* it, but for me it was the weakest of this season and probably this whole series. I think we might get more of this crew, or some kind of spinoff or origin story, based on the one guy's comment that Kali saved them all and brought them together. She's the queen they chose, I guess.

I think Kali did care for Eleven, as long as Eleven wanted to go about revenge the same way Kali did. Like the way narcissists "love" their kids.  I was so relieved Eleven didn't kill that guy. That would have been way too dark for this show. Yes, she's killed before, but that's because she had to. This would have been a choice.

Having the biggest guy in the crew wear the Cheer Bear Care Bear mask did make me laugh, though.

  3. Buzzfeed talked to TV writers about their gun-related episodes (DeGrassi, My So-Called Life, Law and Order, etc.), including Charles Rosen for the "The Next 50 Years" episode. The whole article is interesting, but I had to share this piece of casting information.

    Quote

I distinctly remember hearing about a 17-year-old who had been accidentally shot and killed in a hotel near Disneyland on grad night on the morning I was supposed to inform Doug Emerson, the actor who played freshman nerd Scott Scanlon, that we were not picking up his option for Season 2. But instead of kicking him to the curb, I asked if he would come back as a recurring character for a few episodes in which, after returning from a summer spent with his grandparents in Oklahoma, his best boyhood friend — West Beverly D.J., David Silver — would effectively shun him (and his ubiquitous cowboy hat) now that he started hanging out at The Peach Pit with the popular kids.

I wonder how they otherwise would have addressed Scott's absence? Maybe his family moved to Oklahoma? And what would have become of Sue Woo Woo Scanlon?

I think Dylan and Kelly should have never gotten together.  They clearly loathed each other from the beginning and never were happy at any point in their relationship.  Brandon and Kelly, while total shitheads together and apart, did have a long period of being happy together and their buildup together was sweet, as was their reunion in season 7.

I was going to write this exact same thing. And I really thought they would have said Kelly and Dylan. Aside from how miserable they were together, they were also kind of miserable to watch. It's not fun to watch a couple who can't stand to be together be together! And it ruined Brenda and Kelly's friendship, which was one of my favorite parts of the show.

Andrea and Steve would have been so much fun together! But I guess we're kind of getting that same dynamic with Claire and Steve. Though Claire is a lot bitchier (or at least will be in these upcoming episodes) to Steve than I think Andrea would have been.

Gina just was not likable at any moment during her time on the show.

Ugh, Gina was the fucking worst. Val could be an asshole sometimes, but you always kind of understood why. But Gina was an asshole all the time and for like no reason. And don't even get me started on what the writers did to Dr. Martin's character during the Gina years.

  6. I overlook a lot of stupid stuff on these later seasons of 90210, but the story about Mark, I can't. WHO LEAVES COLLEGE 2ND SEMESTER OF THEIR SENIOR YEAR?! No one, that's who! You could have just never mentioned him again, that would have sufficed. Or say that he quit the TV station.

And how exactly is Tom supposed to afford rent at a place in the Hollywood Hills?

Why was Tyrion skulking outside Dany's room looking all sad that Jon and Dany were, uh, together?  He wants a successor to Dany, right?  And even if he too believes she can't get pregnant, then what's the harm in a fling between allies?

I was very confused by this as well. Someone in the comments section of youtube (reliable source, I know) said the showrunners have indicated that Tyrion is in love with Dany, but I hope that that's not true. One, because I like their friendship and advisor/advisee relationship and not every male/female relationship has to be romantic and two, as much as I love Dany, not every man needs to fall in love with her.

  8. Kelly's "bet everyone that it's not me calling" line is probably her best line in the last half of the series. It makes me miss cool high school Kelly all over again.

Mark's "What?!" reminded me of the moment that made me like Faith Hill.

  9. Totally agree with you guys about the hostility towards Candice. It seems like people are also put off by her lipstick, which is silly. It's just makeup and she's having fun with it, who cares?

  10. Mark has been in more episodes than I remember. I thought he was gone after like 5 episodes. The actor is cute, but Mark is just sooooooo boooooooring in a season that is sooooooo boooooooring.

The only entertaining part of the episode was Brandon angrily saying "Corey." Maybe it's because I remember the Coreys from the 80's and the Simpsons' "Here are some words that rhyme with Corey," but it's such a ridiculous name (sorry to any actual Coreys, but blame Haim/Feldman/Masterson) and saying it angrily makes it even more ridiculous.

A few weeks ago, I googled the show to read about the contestants, and the Wikipedia sidebar displayed Candice's name as the current winner.

I googled Candice when the show first started to make sure I was talking about the right contestant and the first results were interviews with her after she won. I would have been rooting for Jane to win, so I'm kind of glad I was spoiled. Candice absolutely deserved to win, though, and I love the friendship between her and Jane.

  12. God yes, Jake. He was so hot (and Grant Show still looks pretty good). I feel like the teen magazines at the the time were trying to push Andrew Shue and even 12-year-old me was like "That guy?"

Also, I say we swap in Jane for Donna just to get rid of the boob cavern.

Jane might be the character I dislike the most. Jerry and I feel the same way about her.

Well at least Brandon actually in the next few episodes has the right to bray at Steve. I would bray if someone copied my paper without me knowing and got me in major trouble.

Doesn't this plot bring about the return of Coriolanus Randolph, too?

But i always wondered what her end game plan was if Kenny had decided once Val was pregnant, he would for sure leave his wife and be with Val and new baby?

I never watched Nashville, but they had a similar storyline on Melrose Place where Brooke legitimately thought she was pregnant but then found out she wasn't, so she called Billy to pick her up at the hospital and then she told him she had a miscarriage.

I listened to this episode on the bus this morning and actually rolled my eyes and shook my head when Mark talked about the books representing his two sides.

Also, I'll never be able to buy polenta again.

  15. Forgive me if this has been talked about before, as I did not hear the first These Are The Daves I Know, but I really think not calling it Daves of our Lives is a missed opportunity.

Also, it's shocking that I am now a year older than George Wendt was in the first season of Cheers. And no one believes me when I tell them this, but hand to God I once saw George Wendt jogging down the street, back in the late 90's, He and my family are from the same neighborhood and his sister still lives there, so I'm 99% certain it was him.

I maintain that Son-in-Law is actually quite funny and enjoyable. I am not a crackpot.

I thought I was the only one who liked Son in Law!

  17. Dick is Dead has also starred in several things with Tiffani-Amber Thiessen: Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian StyleSon in Law (Pauley Shore's best movie really), and now 90210. But I can't remember if Dick and Val cross paths. Also, do you think the writers had him go by Dick (rather than Rick or Rich or Richard) for the alliteration of "Dick is dead"? I mean, probably not, but "Dick is dead" just rolls off the tongue so well.
