So if not for maelynn , Blake would have had all 4 contestants in the finale.  Wow.  I totally can't tell the 2dark haired country singers apart.  I guess we can call Maelynn the winner since they will probably cancel each other out.

I hope Maelynn wins she's been my favorite from the start. Andrew from Blake's team is shorter than the other men. I'm not shocked he made the top four I thought his solo performance was great last night.

Its not exactly a trope, so much as a writing choice, and its kind of hard to explain, but I've really grown to hate when shows write in out of nowhere twists, cruel endings, or pointless shock deaths because its so "unexpected" like that makes them such amazing writers or something, as if giving characters an arc that makes sense and writing stories based on logic and what has previously been established is just toooooo dull or something, it needs to be "OMG TWIST!" trending all over Twitter every single week, and I am just over. I love a good twist, and I dont mind a dark turn or death, can even enjoy one if done well, but only if it actually makes sense in the story and serves a freaking purpose beyond "hah, didnt see that coming did you?" I mean, I didnt see it coming that all the main characters turn into pillows shaped like strawberries in your cop show, but that does NOT make it good! It just makes it confusing and makes you feel like you wasted your time getting invested in a story expecting it to make sense. But we gotta get those "OMG" social media moments I guess!

Its the same energy that leads to show runners killing off characters in pointless and stupid ways, to be shocking or, possibly even more annoyingly, because its "realistic" that people die, and we have to listen to the writers babble on about how "revolutionary" they are for saying fuck you to character development or whatever. Well, yeah people do die, in all kinds of stupid random ways, and that can be great drama if done well (like Buffy's mom dying of natural causes in the middle of a whole supernatural mess) but its so often done poorly, in ways that dont seem tragic, just that the writers got bored of their own characters and want to get rid of them. And just because death is random, how does that mean it makes a good story? How does it gel with a characters arc that they just croak for no reason other than to be shocking or because "people die all the time"or whatever. Its so annoying, and both issues just make me less invested in shows, not more engaged, and makes it seem like I care way more than the writers.

I agree with you darkness inspired apathy is real. I loved the X-Files I wanted Mulder to find Samantha so badly. I watched Mulder and Scully go through hell in order to find her only to learn that she was dead all along. I was furious I felt like I wasted my time. I think writers need to understand that it's fine to give heroes a happy ending. I don't think it's a coincidence that Chris Carter hasn't had a hit show since then.

  3. I agree that Speechless didn't get special education right. However they were one of the only shows to highlight how inaccessible the public can be. I loved that Jimmy and Maya had a successful marriage and they never tried to "fix" JJ. The sibling rivalry was real too.

I could have an entire board filled with nothing but lyrics from Beatles songs.  I had them all before Alex finished reading them.

It's strange going back to pre-James numbers of TS (which, I still contend, could just as easily stand for Too Stupid, Three Stooges, or Total Silence).

How embarrassing was it for the one guy to guess American Motors for Chevrolet and Cadillac?

The Beatles are my favorite band so I loved that category. I want James back I kept saying James would have known that whenever they missed a question.

So sad -- not just for myself as a fan, but also for all the individuals and families in the disability / special-needs community who have commented on the show's and cast members' official social media accounts about their appreciation for how the show reflected their lives in funny and heartwarming ways (without turning into doom-and-gloom, preachy "after-school special" stuff, or "inspiration porn"). 😢

I agree especially since ABC barely promoted Speechless. The able bodied actors will be fine but Micah Fowler won't.

As someone with [severe] CP (...and Ryan's age...and an incredibly late bloomer...) this cut very close to the bone. I thought he was a little on the self-pitying side for someone whose disability is mild enough not to require help with daily care. His mom made me so sad and she's like the inverse of Maya from Speechless - so broken and worn down and no one gives her a break. No amount of hot dudes going down on you is going to fix your family. The harsher side of special needs families - codependency, control issues, arrested development, compassion fatigue, loneliness, isolation - were on full display in ways that were really painful. I've snapped at my parents many times, but he was just a raging dickhead in the finale. Both Carey and especially Phil (Mom's bf) were manic pixie dream guys - from extensive personal experience, no one is going to dump their hot able-bodied SO for an awkward disabled virgin with no social connections (me!). People do stuff like that all the time (invite you to third wheel dates, take you drinking, sometimes even kiss you/give you lapdances for "fun") to make you feel included and you're so hungry for social interaction that you take it all seriously, but you're a novelty at the end of the day. Ryan probably thinks Carey is his bf now, but Carey will write it off as a drunken kiss or still be dating that other guy. Re: Phil, as @Blakeston said, mama needs love too, but the idea that some hunky neighbor who looks like he just waltzed off the set of a Gillette commercial would materialize out of thin air and become so infatuated with a low self-esteem hermit that he can barely keep it in his pants long enough to get through the door....yeah, no.

Kim is a delight. She and Brian Jordan Alvarez were both on the web series The Wondrous Gay Life of Caleb Gallo, which I highly recommend!

And wow, that scene with Brian Jordan Alvarez as the sex worker was phenomenally well done and very tasteful. Normally the "disabled person hires a sex worker" trope devolves into a sappy "brave and selfless sex worker provides suffering, touch-starved disabled person release" narrative, but you can absolutely tell that scene was told from a disabled man's perspective. I loved that it was more or less a "cool, thanks for showing me how sex works!" before turning the focus right back to daily life. No pity, no nonsense self-loathing, no big deal.

Here's hoping for a season 2 to resolve that fucking depressing cliffhanger. Ryan needs to step up his acting game, because his mom acted circles around him in that last confrontation.

I thought Ryan acted like he was 28 going on 14. I didn't like Olivia until episode seven when it was clear she saw through Ryan. I loved Kim and Ryan's mom. I was glad they showed Ryan struggling with basic things like tying his shoes and shuffling a deck of cards which are two things I've never been able to do. I was annoyed with Ryan hiding his disability as well. I have moderate CP not as severe as JJ but worse than Ryan I've never hidden the fact I had CP.

I've thought this for several years. I think there is a higher % of country music fans who watch AND vote actively on shows like this. It's why almost every season there is some country singer that makes it to the final that for me was at best the 8th place person.

Blake isn't the only coach to win with a country singer. Kelly won with Chevel last season. I think more country singers are trying out for the Voice instead of American Idol. Blake and Kelly have taken some of their team on tour so that would be a huge incentive for a country singer to choose them.

You go to the CM board and it seems she is worse then the worst UnSub.

I like finales so although I don’t care about Game of Thrones I am curious enough how it ends.

I know I post on that forum and someone thought she was worse than George Foyet. I think if you hate a particular character you should use cannon to prove your point. There is  ahuge difference between discussion and name calling.

  9. I hate this format it's too rushed. I thought the outfits on many of the women were too distracting especially Mari and Olive. I thought Maelyn gave the best performance and Jacob the worst he sucked all the emotion out of Total Eclipse of the Heart.

I agree the voting should have been set up by having it listed as each Cross Battle grouping listed separately and having us vote for one or the other.

Agreed. I hope at least LB or Beth are selected for the Comeback stage.

They aren't eligible for the Comeback stage since they made it through the Knockouts.

I do. Which is annoying, and something I've never had to do, even on TWOP if I recall correctly.  Not just that, but I've noticed that without signing in, I can no longer view new comments. Hence I have to sign in every evening, when normally I just browsed unless I wanted to comment or "like," same as you.

Are you using your own computer? There should be a remember me box that you can check.

  12. I thought the Bundys were awful. I thought Blake was smart to have all his country singers preform all on the same night. I loved Beth I miss seeing the coaches interact with their team members with the battle rounds.

I was not surprised that a majority of the saves and steals were used this week.  The format provides an incentive for the coaches to front-load their favorites (to the extend possible given who challenges them).  Its the best way to maximize the chances of keeping the contestants you really want.

Of course this doesn't prevent the coaches from making bad choices.  I think its pretty much a travesty that Kayslin and Andrew are going home, while Celia and Selkii were saved.  The first two were far superior this round and had impressed me more in previous rounds (with the singular exception of Celia's blind audition).

I was concerned that Adam's unpopularity was going to screw his better contestants.  But at least most viewers weren't so irrational as to vote for Selkii just to punish Mari's coach.

I sure hope they bring back the Knockouts next season.  They were always one of my favorite rounds because the contestants have to pick their own songs.

I liked Selkii FYI the Voice is moving to 9:00 on Tuesdays starting next week.

I played the game against myself again today and got beaten badly, 36 to 25. Some of those Do Not Knows I did know and could have answered if I had FJ time instead of the split second allowed for regular board clues. I've also discovered that my mind wanders if the clue is too long, and I'm thinking about something else before I get the whole thing read. Or listened to.

I did get the three TSs, Quaker, sawbones and Jerome Robbins. Maybe I should get double points for those.

I saw the FJ category and thought, "Oh, crumb bums, I'm sunk." I thought the same last time we had that category and it turned out to be an easy Bonnie Prince Charles question. So I figured no such luck this time. But will wonders never cease, I answered easily and without much thinking. Which is good because if I started thinking of those kids I might have said "William," like Gabby did.

I thought James seemed tired too. I hope he is getting some rest and didn't have to tape another game right after this one. I want him to continue forever.

This interesting factoid is from TheJeopardyFan.com. James was VERY close to this record:

With James being incorrect on the first clue of today’s match, Liz Haigney Lynch’s record of seeing 179 consecutive clues without being incorrect remains intact.

I thought the clues during the Jeopardy round were tougher than usual. I knew Bill France since I'm a Nascar fan.

  15. I loved the opening it was so Maya. I didn't like JJ deciding not to go to NYU after wanting it so much Monk had the same plot where he gave up being a police detective after wanting to be reinstated throughout the series. I hope Izzy and JJ can stay together after graduation they are great together. I hated Ray's subplot he seems so self centered.

That's what always bugged me about Pope. Way back in season one he says he'll deal with Taylor but he never did. He tells Brenda he will but he doesn't. In her second case he wasted no time in canceling Brenda's order to arrest Dean Kingsley. Yes, Flynn and Taylor talked to him but he didn't have to say yes. He knew Brenda and enough to realize Brenda probably had a reason for it. Instead of trusting her and letting the order stand or backing her up by telling Flynn to follow out the order, or calling Brenda and ask. He just immediately folds and cancels the order and undermines her authority. Gives Taylor and Flynn a reason to think if she screws up she's out the door. I don't like how he's always happy when there's a problem between Brenda and Fritz or happy he seemed when telling Brenda about Fritz's DUIs. His horrible behavior when he thought he was in the running for Chief of Police or how angry he got at Brenda, or "allowing" her to run. Or for some reason believing he couldn't put an end to the investigation into her. Yet even though Brenda knows most of it she still has blinders when it comes to him. She seems to think he still has her back.

Amen I hate that Pope's role in the T Ball situation gets overlooked. He tells Brenda to give him immunity so Brenda can't arrest him for the murder of the store owner and his grandson. She also investigated the murder of woman he dated while she was married. Pope was a jerk during the investigation of the parole board member's death. I cheered when he was called out.

  17. I watched the first episode of Special today. The main character Ryan has a mild form of cerebral palsy. I liked that they showed Ryan struggling with his fine motor skills. I also liked Ryan's mom I thought she was awesome. I hated Ryan lying about the source of his disability to his new coworkers. He claimed that his disability was due to a car accident and not CP.

I've always found it fascinating how one person will have their "unpopular opinion" and then suddenly it's the most popular opinion in the world. Everyone jumps on the bandwagon. Then, after a few days/pages/whathaveyou, suddenly it's the stupidest opinion in the world and all the sheep have moved onto new opinion. I'm as guilty of it as the rest of us. It's a fascinating quirk of humanity, part of our desire to fit in. Trouble is, eventually it will turn ugly because there are also people out there who have nothing better to do than try to piss people off.

I have abandoned many a fandom because of the gang mentality I see on so many of them.

And that's where it gets frustrating, because there are also some very smart, funny, clever folks trying to have fun, thoughtful conversations going on. you just have to wade through a lot of shit to get to them, and you have to get there fast before it devolves into "my favorite character is better than your favorite character who is horrible and evil and stupid while mine is heroic and amazing and perfect".

Amen you would think JJ Jareau was evil incarnate according to some Criminal fans. I think fans are too quick to use terms like narcissist and sociopath to describe characters they don't like.
