  1. no, folks, this is going to be over in a month. It's just stupid to spend time and calories on a fence or cabin, when you cant' produce the 10,000 calories per day (per team) needed to do all that hard work. NO, if it's not basic stuff like SMALL fire's wood and water, the calories and time need to be spent on getting food into your belly (and preserved). These people haven't learned a thing from the previous 3 seasons, channels on youtube, forums, or survival/hunting/fishing manuals and books. The info on how to do this stuff IS available, but they are too arrogant/lazy to look for it (and then put it into practice). yeah, and lucas LOST. you are not wise to think or act like the losers. I've lived alone, without human contact, for 5 months, several times in my life. There's nothing to it, really, if you have inner strength. People who can't even manage 5 WEEKs are just wusses and dont belong on this show.
  2. It doesn't take that much work to make a log raft, 4x8 ft, with longer poles in the center/point, and then pole outriggers for stability. Add a chunk of tarp, sewn into a tube shape, tape the seam from both sides, stuffed with soft, force-dried debris, as a pontoon, for guaranteed continuance of bouyancy. Encase the pontoon in 1" saplings, and you'll have something to sit on while you use your kayak paddle, and you can remove the pontoon and lash it down, vs storms. This raft only takes a score of 5-6" OD logs, no big deal at all. You cut a 7 ft long, 2-" sapling, whittle down the center a bit for a better fit in your hands, and notch both ends. Notch some 1.5" OD, 6" long sticks and lash them across the ends of your long pole, forming the paddle. It's not rocket science, guys. The raft lets you easily and safely haul all your stuff and check out the 10 miles of waterfront that's available to you, so you know that you're set up in the optimal spot. You need the raft anyway, for check your nets and traps for crabs and fish. Once it's too cold and nasty to be out on the water, you can pop a few stitches, flatten out the 3 ft wide hunk of tarp and convert it and the stuffing into more insulation to sleep under/on. the NUMBER of fish is meaningless. Which would you want, 16 2 oz sunfish, or one 4 lb catfish, hmm? What matters is the amount of calories that go into your stomach, vs how many calories you burned.
  3. they dont know enough to take PARACORD gillnets and PARACORD hammocks. Nets are like traps. If you want an assured catch, you need a LOT of them. The 100 sq ft of gillnet is nothing. If you take the 2000 ft of paracord net and hammock, tho, you can urnavel it to its 2000 ft of paracord, remove the outer sheathing and have 14,000 ft of inner strands. If you weave that into 3" mesh, 6 ft wide, you'll have over 100m of netting. THAT (used properly) will feed you pretty well and give you enough fish guts, to bait in bears to your tree platform/blind, so that you can arrow them from there. Hunting bears IS allowed on this show. They are stupid to not do so, and not take the bow needed to do it. field made wooden arrows, blunt, with tape fletching, will FLOAT, so you get to retrieve them with your log raft, after trying for swimming ducks.
  4. that one tarp was always listed on the gear list page, tho, and now it's not there. No books, inkpens, etc, are allowed, (apparently) just one picture of your choice. Fowler cut reminder notches into sticks, so that he could later compile his journal about his 87 days. Some of them got 3 tarps in season one, cause the photo equipment was staged at their dropoff points, before the contestants were brought in. i'd like to see a change in what defines the winner. Instead of choosing the biggest lardass who does the least, why not say that the winner is the one who loses the least weight (or gains the most) Then, instead of watching people do nothing but lay around in their sleeping bags, you'd see skilled people actually providing enough food for themselves. It CAN be done, but you have to take the right gear, know what to do with that gear, and get it DONE, in the right order/time frame.
  5. Until you have assured yourself 10 lbs of fish/game being caught every day, all else is to be avoided, beyond a seep well, a very small, simple tarp shelter, fire. If you dont assure yourself of that much food, you'll win only by being a fatty (and lucky). For at least 2 weeks, , getting that much food-income is going to require that you burn 5000+ calories per day. Once you pen up 100 lbs of fish, arrow a bear and catch a few dozen gulls and ducks, you'll be able to back off a bit on the effort and time spent, but every day, you'll have to juice 20 lbs of kelp with a mortar and pestle, in order to keep your brain working properly. Your brain needs carbs and fish and game offer ZERO carbs.
  6. the reality is that you're more likely to be hit by lightning than attacked by a predator (in N America) For 200+ years now, animal that has done so was immediately hunted down and killed, so the "gene" for attacking humans is pretty much bred out of them.
  7. an axe is a wasted pick, so is the saw, and why would you take a 2 qt pot when you can take a 5 qt skillet (Amazon) You dont want a slingshot or a bow. You want one of these The duct tape and your gaiters make a pair of waterproof containers. Chunks of tarp and the tape will make more, so dont waste a pick on a water bottle! Snares, either cordage or picture-wire, don't work worth a hoot without 1 way sliders, heavy wire supports, killpoles, etc. A FAR better idea is boxtraps, made of netting and sapling frames. These can catch mammals, birds, and of course, modified, they catch fish and crabs. The netting is the way to go, for many, many reasons. Don't waste a pick on the "snare wire". you dont want to see anybody, since it's a violation of the rules of the alone shw.. If it is shtf, you likewise don't want to see anyone, cause they'll either kill you or mooch off of you.
  8. sharpening stone is a wasted pick. You can sharpen your knife on any smooth rock, and you can use the multitool's file blade to sharpen the shovel. The paracord and ferrorods are wasted picks. Instead, take a parcord hammock and paracord gillnet. You'll end up with 30x as much paracord after you unravel them. Remove the outer sheathing, and the 7 inner strands will make enough 3" mesh netting to feed you (quite well, actually). You can start a fire with the batteries that they give you, the duct tape (which is SO useful) and a couple of the tines from the fishing arrowheads. Cross the tines, and they will glow red hot in just seconds. Have feathersticks ready, along with pine pitch and some lint you've scraped from your woolen socks and clothing. Once you have a fire, ashes and char will make it pretty easy to start fires with any hunk of chert or quarz, and any carbon steel tool.
  9. they used to be given (season 1 and 2) a 20 x20 tarp and a 10x10, not part of the 10 picks. In Season 3, they got only the 10x10 given to them, so they had to wasted a pick on a 12x12 tarp. Season 4, they are given no tarps at ALL, so they have to waste 2 picks, one on the 12x12 and one on a bivvy sack for their sleeping bags. So the fact that they are given 3 more items (sleeping bag, belt knife, and ferrorod, does NOT make up for having only 200 sq ft of cover, as vs the 500 sq ft that they used to be just given. Their rations are cut from 5 lbs per person to 1 lb per person, (2 lbs for 2 people, actually) The gillnet is cut in half, and the mesh is made so small that it's useless, too.
  10. you burn a ton of calories doing such work, and it's wasted, cause you wont be there a month and wont be able to do hard work within 2 weeks, if you dont start consuming about 5000 calories per day. Fish and game offer only 800 calories to the lb (ready to eat) and only half of a fish or animal's live weight is edible flesh. So you need to catch 12 lbs (per person) EVERY day, average, of live weight fish or game. You also need to juice 20 lbs of kelp (per day, every day) to get enough carbs to keep your brain working properly. Fish and game offer ZERO carbs, folks. Durng ww2, many men did not see their families for 5 YEARS, and often almost daily saw brothers in arms killed or mutilated. This show is a CAKEWALK by comparison.
  11. this is set up for a spousal team to win, but this stupid bs about building cabins, when you can't even feed yourself properly, really shows how ignorant people are about the reality of working hard, out in bad weather. NOBODY so far has taken the trouble to do even a day's worth of research on the net, or they'd be doing things a LOT differently. They ARE allowed to hunt bears and even a smallish bear, 200 lbs or so, will win the contest for one person, and might well do so for a pair. You just have to make a ladder and a tree platform/blind, and use fish and gull/duck guts to bait the bears within 10m of your blind. But you'll need several lbs of salt to reliably preserve that fatty meat and that means several days of boiling off seawater.
  12. what are the chances that someone just as tough, fit, motivated and skilled as yourself will be in the same family and both of you be able to take off 3 month's work? zilch, that's what chance. So you end up with some wuss/incompetent who will tap out FOR you and with whom you'll have to split the lousy 1/4 mill (that you CLEAR) hth will you do all that work, when you cant feed yourself, eh? NOBODY has managed to do better than "only" losing 1/2 lb a day and they managed that only by doing nothing but lie around. Get out there in the cold, wet and wind, working hard, and you'll either lose a lb a day, (and soon be too weak to work) or you'll have to spend all your time catching fish, hunting bears, hooking gulls and ducks, juicing kelp and the like. You need 5000 calories per day to be working hard, man. Mike Phelps has to eat TWELVE thosuand calories per day when he's training and you'll be at it 2x as long per day as he trains.
  13. About the only thing that 2 lbs of rations (for 2 guys) is good for is bait for the fishhooks, on small log rafts, set for gulls and ducks. This season is going to be ridiculously short, under a month. It's obviously set up for married couples to win, since everyone else has to split the prize money, and a couple would be doing so anyway. The thing to do is catch some fish and waterfowl, use their guts to bait 1 or more bears within 10m of a tree platorm/blind, about 20 ft up, and arrow them. But first you have to spend several days, constantly boiling off seawater, so you'll have the several lbs of salt needed to assure that your smoke/curing is safely preserving tht 100+ lbs of fatty bear meat.
  14. take a paracord gillnet and a paracord hammock. Unravel them and remove the outer sheathing. This will take about a day to accomplish. Then you'll have 21,000 ft of single strands, enough to weave 2500 sq ft of 3" mesh netting, which is 400 x 6 ft, enough to convert an entire small cove into a fish trap. bait the cove as the tide comes in, and locate the net where there will be at most a foot of water in the trap at low tide. Presto, you've caught 100's of lbs of fish. Make a big 'holding=tank" of netting, so you dont have to smoke/cure them. Every day, you can weave 40 x6 ft of this netting and hang it as a gillnet, so you'll be catching fish as you go, too.
  15. Assuming that you each know to take a Cold Steel kukri, oilcloth and wool sleeping bag (so you can dry it out with hot rocks) and the biggest ferrorod available (those 3 things do not count vs the team's 10 picks) Then the other 10 picks most likely to help you are: Cold steel's shovel, modified to have a REAL saw edge) a modified Leatherman Crunch multitool (with a Silky saw blade to be held in the visegrip) a 5 qt skillet and lid (Amazon) the 25 TREBLEHOOKS and 300 yds of line (90% of it to be the heaviest line possible) to be used on small log rafts, baited for gulls and ducks, with a 3 lb drowning rock tied about a foot from each hook. Take a big roll of duct tape, one of Chief Aj's slingbows, with the 6 arrows, 4 of them to have 4-tined fishing heads, which can be converted to being 32 fishhooks) one 5 lb ration of gorp, another of pemmican, a PARACORD gillnet and a PARACORD hammock. The last 2 are to be unraveled, the outer sheathing removed and the single strands woven into 400 ft of 6 ft wide, 3" mesh netting. 2 of you can get that done in a week and then it can be used to seal off an entire small cove, trapping every fish therein and easily feeding both of you for a week or more. if you know to carbo load before you go, the 5 lbs of food will give you strength for a week. So, IF you get together soon, and IF the one staying with the gear gets busy finding water and making netting, you can be feeding yourselves just fine in a week. As you make 40 ft of such netting (each) per day, hang it as a gillnet, so that each day, you gather more and more fish.
