    Not a bad start.

    • Nice Belter reference.  Wonder if that was intentional.
    • Some of those pirate masks looked 1980s bad.
    • Nice to see Bitch Pudding *err* Bo Katan.
    • I like Grogu, but there was too much forced cuteness for a 35 minute episode.

So glad I'm not the only that caught that.

Interesting hearing Greef say that Nevarro wants to be an independent trade anchor, not ruled by some far-off power. Made me wonder if it was an intentional callback to Mayfeld's discussion with Din toward the end of season 2: "Empire, New Republic. It's all the same to these people."

  2. Oh how I've missed this show.

Intense sequence to start the episode. The helmuting ceremony (not sure what else to call it) being interrupted by the sea creature was intense.  When Din swooped in to save the day and landed the Razor Crest Starfigther and Grogu popped up, I actually yelled "Yay!"

Nevarro has had quite the glow up. I'm liking it, though there seems to be some tension with its scummy and villainous past. I just love seeing Greef Karga. Carl Weathers is just delightful in this role.

The previously-on clips made me wonder if we'd get to see IG-11 again, but I guess reassembling him isn't going to be easy - if it's even possible. I actually thought Din was going to seek out Peli Motto for some help with that. Instead, he went to Bo Katan, which...I have to assume there's more to her story. I'm curious to see how they weave her back into the Din's journey.

Excellent premiere! Have I mentioned how much I missed this show!

The couple at the beginning was wonderful. Graham Greene! The humor was needed in this pretty bleak show.

I laughed hardest at this exchange:

Joel: Any advice on the best way to travel west?

    Marlon: Yeah. Go east.

Joel and Tommy's reunion was beautiful, but it highlighted the different places they're at in their lives. Tommy's found community and love, but Joel is still just trying to hold himself together, still frozen in that moment when Sarah died. I am curious about why Tommy left the Fireflies. Disillusionment? Disagreement with their tactics?

I enjoyed the Maria character a lot, but I'm partial to Rutina Wesley. I loved her tough, tense conversation with Ellie. The little memorial for Sarah and for Maria's son, Kevin tugged at my heartstrings.

Joel's talk with Tommy, begging him to take Ellie to the Fireflies broke my heart. He is just consumed by fear and guilt and probably a lot of shame. Brilliant work by Pedro Pascal.

Ellie and Joel seem to be moving toward a true father/daughter dynamic, despite their protests to the contrary. I appreciate that Ellie called him out on trying to leave her "for her own good."

  4. Continuing the season on BritBox

I was surprised by how much Selwyn's storyline with his daughter, Andrina, moved me. Good work from both actors.

Loved the cliffhanger at the end of episode 6. Inspector-is-now-the-accused is an old trope, but I'm curious to see the dynamics it throws up for this set of characters.

Serial posting to add: I’ve been thinking about a couple of things that Kathleen said - “Did you ever consider that he was meant to die?” and “Kids die all the time”. This sounds uncomfortably close to what some said about elderly people during the height of the pandemic, to wit: they’ve lived long lives and maybe it’s their time; well, they were old and going to die anyway, so what’s the problem?

Those lines chilled me to the bone. She was so consumed by hatred and desire for revenge that she found herself basically shrugging at the prospect of Sam's death. For me, Kathleen embodies what happens when the resistance mimics the mindset, power dynamics, and tactics of the regime they're fighting against.

  6. Kathleen just had to stop Henry, Sam, and Ellie. Her quest for vengeance ultimately did her in.

My heart hurt for Henry and Sam (loved Lamar Johnson's performance as Henry). I gotta stop getting attached to characters on this show not named Joel and Ellie.

Who knew Ellen Barkin and Tim Meadows would be such a good couple!

They had great chemistry! Kathleen and Michael were a trip together.

Also, since I just started watching The Good Place, I was delighted to see Jameela Jamil pop up in this.

Loved the twist of the younger actress, Rebecca, figuring out the mystery before Charlie.

Always a delight to see Chris McKinney (Phil, the lighting guy).

    This show continues to delight.

  8. I think Joel took that message from Bill about men like them being there to protect to heart* Even if he hasn't admitted it to himself, he wants to protect Ellie because he feels he failed to do that with Sarah and Tess. It's why he keeps trying to distance himself from having any kind of warm feelings toward Ellie. He seems terrified of failing to protect her.

I loved the scene where he says it's unfair Ellie has to deal with killing people. He seems genuinely heartbroken that she can't just be a child. And I agree with those who've said that he's projecting his feelings about Sarah onto Ellie.

*This isn't something I agree with. I think life is too complicated to split people into protectors vs. those that need to be protected.

  9. Gripping episode. The tension on this show is constant. Even when Joel and Ellie are in moments of relative ease, I'm waiting for something to pop off.

Loved Ellie's book of silly jokes. And I laughed right along with her and Joel at that goofy diarrhea joke.

Kathleen and her group are proper terrifying.

  10. A character like Ellie would usually annoy me, but Bella Ramsey is doing a good job of portraying the character as alternately impetuous, insolent, childlike, fearful. I'm enjoying seeing her relationship with Joel evolve.

  11. Hildegard is probably my favorite of Sydney's partners. And I loved that she had enough self respect to be like "Nope!" when she found out he had slept with someone else. I never got into him and Amanda. I thought she was fine as a character, but just didn't see the chemistry between her and Sydney.
