  1. Decent finale. Solid mystery and a cameo from the Saint Marie contingent (Humphrey has now met two of his successors - Neville and before that, Jack).

Humphrey and Archie fighting was just so silly. The only thing I liked about it was Kelby telling them to break it up. I laughed when he said, "Don't make me take out my baton!"

I guess it's fine that Martha and Humphrey reunited(?) I'm still not into their story, but I do hope that if this gets a second season, this is the last we see of Archie. He's just an annoying character, and I say that as someone who generally likes Jamie Bamber.

  2. Just came back from seeing this, and I enjoyed it much more than I'd expected. I've never played Dungeons & Dragons, so I have very little context for it, but the movie was a lot of fun. The whole gathering-a-team-for-a-mission thing is well trod by now, but I still liked watching it here. It helped that the team played off each other well. Chris Pine was delightfully silly and earnest. Michelle Rodriguez was sarcastic fun. And Justice Smith and Sophia Lillis rounded out the group nicely. Plus, Hugh Grant hamming it up is always a good time.

I also loved the visual effects, especially for Doric's shapeshifting.

I really like how this season is branching out into the wider story. We got to see Coruscant again complete with Elia Kane doing her villaining and how the New Republic is already failing. Plus we now we have confirmation that Moff Gideon is on the loose again.

Agreed! This is one of my favorite things about this season. Particularly in this episode, I loved that Greef Karga, after saying Nevarro didn't want to bow down to another far-off bureaucracy, was forced to ask the New Republic for help. That, plus Capt. Teva seeing the remants of the Empire gathering, has me really intrigued.

I loved how Vane was like "Peace out" when it became clear Gorian Shard's pirates were losing to the Mandalorians 😅

I agree that Din should help.  We didn't see Bo leave yet, so maybe Din and Grogu will jump in and help her.  Do we think the Armorer is relaxing on the helmet rule, maybe because the mythosaur is real and not a legend?  The Armorer is now rethinking all of her beliefs?  If Din goes with Bo, she should tell him that he can remove his helmet too, to make peace with others and try to unite the sects.

Bo getting to take off her helmet gave me hope that the Armorer will one day make wearing the helmet an individual choice.

What a fun episode! The battle on Nevarro was great, and I just loved watching the Armorer go all John Wick on those pirates.

Carson Teva is good people. He sees what's coming; I was so glad when he told Elia, "Your kind didn't see the light; you were captured." Also, when Din told him the covert would have to relocate, my response was "Thank God!"

Continuing to love the glimpses we're getting about the New Republic and its failures. And Elia is totally working to undermine the New Republic on Moff Gideon's orders, right?

The poor kid may just want something like a normal life that doesn't require lifetime vows and following some creed. And it's impressive that they're able to convey all this with facial expressions on a sophisticated puppet.

I continue to be amazed by what the puppeteers of Grogu can do. They have helped to make him a fully realized character, with an inner life that's clearly conveyed with changes in facial and eye movements, coos, and hand movements. It's truly a marvel.

Martha and Humphrey, you freaking idiots. Have you never heard of adoption? I think Martha only said she doesn’t want children because she doesn’t want to suffer through any more rounds of IVF. That said, I don’t really like Martha much so he’s better off without her.

I'm starting to feel this way as well. If this gets a second season, I'd like to see Humphrey on his own, away from Martha and her mother. I find Archie deeply irritating.

Solid mystery, although I did guess the culprit early on. And I guess Simon Harrison is destined to play assholes in perpetuity.

We’ve already seen Grogu reject the rigid Jedi ways and I wouldn’t be surprised if it is being set up for him to do the same with Din’s sect.

I had the same thought when Grogu was watching the Armorer forge his latest armor piece. Like he was thinking "not ANOTHER rigid code!"

  8. Loved this episode!

Grogu's flashback was heartbreaking. Kelleran was a real hero from getting him to safety (lovely to see Ahmed Best in the role) And I too want to know how Grogu went from safe on Kelleran's ship to all alone.

Grogu's training scene: Din is always the proud dad. I laughed at Bo Katan saying "My dad was the same way."

Armorer & Co need to find a new location for their covert. This one seems decidedly unsafe.

Bo saying "This is the Way" feels kinda momentous, no?

So now 3 baby dragons have been brought as foundlings to the covert. Their training should be fun 😝

I love love love this show!

The personal stuff is truly weak tho. I mean, the IVF/miscarriage is enough drama, they really had to add an ex fiance who clearly wants Martha back to the mix? Too much soapy drama and I'm not a fan. I wish they'd drop all that.

I'm not opposed to the inclusion of the characters' personal lives, but it's just been handled very badly on this show. DiP did a much better job with these types of stories. JP and Rosie's relationship is a good example. He met her on a case, and they started dating. But we only got glimpses and mentions of their relationship. The mysteries were still the main focus of the show.

Martha's cafe, the IVF, the ex-fiance - I'm just not interested in any of it.

I did enjoy the mystery in this latest episode. At least those seem to be improving.

  10. Dr. Pershing is a character that always intrigued me, so I loved this episode. I had a feeling Elia was setting him up, but I still felt bad when he was arrested. Ditto when he was being "soothed" by the Mind Flayer, especially with the way that one doctor(?) was talking about it like it was no big deal :::shudder:::

It was also cool hearing about the transition from Empire to New Republic. The Amnesty Program seems like a good idea. Not too sure about the execution of it, though

"Empire, Rebels, New Republic...I can't keep track." Must be nice to be so privileged you don't care who's at the helm.

So, Bo Katan is now part of the covert. I don't see that lasting very long. I'm waiting for Din to start questioning The Way, even as I understand why he clings to it so much.

  11. This has been bugging me since I watched the finale: why would they need to kill Ellie to make the cure? According to this article, the wouldn't.

    Quote

However, Casadevall stresses, you definitely wouldn’t need to kill anybody in order to obtain the sample. “You could just get a brain biopsy. You can get a good chunk,” or, even better, “you could get somebody who’s dead and infected. You could just get [the molecule] from that brain.” And as for getting ahold of this molecule, one would think you could use just a blood sample, but Casadevall is willing to play the show’s game: “If it was secured in the blood, you could just get it off the blood. But, I mean, it may be that it’s only produced [in the] brain tissue.”

But Dr. Stuart Levitz, professor of medicine and microbiology and physiological systems at UMass Chan Medical School, finds the idea that an immune response would be only in the brain to be, well, science fiction: “It really doesn’t make any medical sense to me, or immunologic sense. I mean, even with people with brain infections—and in my lab I study a fungus that mostly infects the brain—people have immune cells in the blood that have activity against the fungus. You wouldn’t have to remove a brain in order to study the cells.

Why was this never an option? I could see Joel being worried about them getting anywhere near Ellie's brain and objecting to that. But why did it have to go straight to "we have to take her whole brain?"

  12. I wasn't really following the Lineker story until this weekend, so I didn't realize that other BBC on-air talent had boycotted in solidarity with him. I'm assuming the BBC director general didn't expect that. They created an unnecessary mess for themselves.

I wanted Joel to save Ellie. The show gave me that wish -- in the worst way.

Perfectly said. I felt sick watching Joel kill everyone in his path at that hospital. But at the same time, I was thinking "He's got to save Ellie!" I've been sitting with that tension since the finale ended.

  14. Wow, that was intense. Didn’t expect Joel to go on a rampage to save Ellie – although after last week I guess I should have.

Pedro Pascal broke my heart in this episode. When Joel was standing there, holding Ellie as Marlene pleaded with him to let Ellie be sacrificed, he looked…lost and in despair. In his mind, he just couldn’t let down another person he loved. Still, he racked up quite the body count, and watching him do it was terrifying.

That lie sounds so implausible, I wonder if Ellie actually believes it, even after Joel swore it's the truth.

I don’t think she does, but I do think part of her wants to.

I loved Joel opening up to Ellie about his suicide attempt. And when he said “It wasn’t time that did it” in response to Ellie’s “time heals all wounds” - :::sob:::

Also loved the scene where they fed the giraffe. I think that might have been the second time we saw Joel smile this season.

  15. I was able to watch episode 3, and I really enjoyed it. The mystery of the stolen painting was clever, and this was the first episode where I felt like Humphrey and the team gelled. The story with Martha was also handled better in this episode. I found the scenes where she talked with her mom about her late father touching.

I've enjoyed the mysteries. It's nice that they aren't murders so far. The first one was really good!!

But the personal storyline stuff...not a fan. I hate how Martha is letting her mother treat Humphrey so poorly and that he spent the savings on the boat without even talking to her. Neither move is very respectful of the other person. (I do cut Humphrey a tiny bit of slack cause I'd feel desperate to get away from her mom too lol) it was stupid of Martha to hide Archie is her ex and not even think how that would look to Humphreys. The whole personal stuff is just not doing either character any favor. I'd rather they just focus on the mysteries because at least those are well written!

This is where I am right now. The mysteries are solid, and I'm enjoying seeing Humphrey again, but the stuff with Martha feels clumsy and inauthentic. Like they've piled a bunch of conflict onto this couple - the IVF struggles, the awkward living situation, the ex-fiance - presumably to create tension, but I'm not sure that was even necessary. Let us see them happy for a bit, so that when conflict does arise, we know what's at stake.

I am enjoying the scenery porn shots of the English countryside. That was one of my favorite things on DiP, and I love seeing it here as well.

  17. I love this show! It's one of the few shows where I'll yell out while watching.

I feared for Grogu when he was all alone after Din got captured. Speaking of, what was that thing that captured him?

Does Bo Katan just sit on the throne, or does she like read a Kindle or play video games?

The planet settings on this show are brilliantly done. Every single one feels authentic.

So Din finally made it to the living waters, and well, let's just say he got more than he bargained for. Loved Bo Katan rescuing him - for the second time in the episode!

    Not a bad start.

    • Nice Belter reference.  Wonder if that was intentional.
    • Some of those pirate masks looked 1980s bad.
    • Nice to see Bitch Pudding *err* Bo Katan.
    • I like Grogu, but there was too much forced cuteness for a 35 minute episode.

So glad I'm not the only that caught that.

Interesting hearing Greef say that Nevarro wants to be an independent trade anchor, not ruled by some far-off power. Made me wonder if it was an intentional callback to Mayfeld's discussion with Din toward the end of season 2: "Empire, New Republic. It's all the same to these people."

  19. Oh how I've missed this show.

Intense sequence to start the episode. The helmuting ceremony (not sure what else to call it) being interrupted by the sea creature was intense.  When Din swooped in to save the day and landed the Razor Crest Starfigther and Grogu popped up, I actually yelled "Yay!"

Nevarro has had quite the glow up. I'm liking it, though there seems to be some tension with its scummy and villainous past. I just love seeing Greef Karga. Carl Weathers is just delightful in this role.

The previously-on clips made me wonder if we'd get to see IG-11 again, but I guess reassembling him isn't going to be easy - if it's even possible. I actually thought Din was going to seek out Peli Motto for some help with that. Instead, he went to Bo Katan, which...I have to assume there's more to her story. I'm curious to see how they weave her back into the Din's journey.

Excellent premiere! Have I mentioned how much I missed this show!
