  2. Spoiler

so what did we think about Gemma's wedding dress? I thought it really suited her.  The color was great on her too. Obviously, it was ridiculously over the top but I suppose that was to be expected.

    https://www.nationaltvawards.com/voting is open

If you're interested, the show is up for best serial drama.  The actors who play Amy, Alya, Daisy, Evelyn, Paul and Ryan are all up for best serial drama performance.  The actress who plays Dee Dee is up for rising star.

Voting ends June 2 11 p.m. BST.  You can vote in as many categories as you want, but only for one contender per category and only once per email address.

Well, it was all a flagrant ripoff of Phoebe's wedding, in which (among other things) the ice sculpture got sent to the billing address rather than the delivery address and the ceremony was in the street, complete with fairy lights.

Actually, every CTM wedding has had its share of disasters.   It's not like every other wedding went off without some kind of hitch.

I also saw on other forums complaints about not seeing Matthew and Trixie take their vows.  Only Cyril and Lucille were ever shown doing that.   For most of the other weddings, we only saw the bride and groom leaving the church or on the way to the reception or we saw the bride entering the church and going up to the altar where her groom and the priest are waiting.

No one has mentioned Sr. Julienne’s announcement that new trainees “will be arriving before the New Year.” The Christmas episode, therefore, should introduce us to a whole new flock of newbies, and I hope Phyllis is up to the task. I predict, given this news, that Nancy will choose to stay in order to maintain stability for Colette. In doing so, I’m sure she’ll be given greater responsibility, and perform her duties on a par with the remaining experienced midwives. Looking forward to it.

But I’m NOT wishing away MY summer-I can wait.

I think Shelagh will also be teaching and possibly Sr. Veronica.

Regarding Nancy and Colette, I can also see a scenario where she takes the job and then discovers that it ends up that she has less time to spend with Colette than she had before.

  5. The wedding was on the other side of London, so it's possible the weather was different in the East End.

Regarding Matthew buying Nonnatus House, I thought that Sr. Julienne devised a plan to restart the student nurse program, and she asked Cyril and Matthew to help.  Once Cyril said the building was structurally sound, she asked Matthew to buy it

When Trixie said it was her last night as a bachelor girl, Geoffrey said that some of us stay true to that calling all our lives.

Or at least read a card or telegram from one or hopefully more of them! That wouldn’t cost them anything.

Or when Phyllis was talking to Sr. Julienne. she could have said something about how when someone leaves, you always say you're going to keep in touch, but after a while,  everyone moves on.

Trixie has siblings?  This is news to me.  I really liked her brother - he had his own big personality, and you knew where it was coming from.  I just wish we'd gotten to know him better beforehand.  Maybe in future seasons?

The Lizzie story was wrenching.  In an episode where a wedding was occurring, it pulled the joy out of the air for a while.  They had plenty of drama with everything going wrong regarding flowers, cake, reception area, etc...  And I was really enjoying Lizzie's character.  Her and Arnold pretending she was in the throes of labor so they could get away from both their mothers was delightful.

Will I miss Nancy (and by extension Collette)?  Well, yes.  Nancy has grown on me as a character, and her character has grown on the others (as evidenced by Phyllis being weepy at the though of her leaving.  (Also, what was with Collette and her nosebleeds?  Nothing serious, I hope.  My own kiddo had tons of nosebleeds at that age, so here's hoping it's a non-issue.)

I'm glad they're giving Cyril things to do, even though I don't agree with him and Lucille being so far apart.

And I enjoyed the poem Sister MJ read.  Her addendum at the end to absent friends made me tear up and think of Matthew's first wife, Barbara, Sister Evangelina...

Last thing: Jonsy is a little doll!  His bit with Matthew and the "happily ever after" melted my heart.  That's no great task - I cry at cat food commercials - but... those eyes!

Trixie mentioned a brother who dropped her into a rock pool thus beginning her lifelong fear of fish. I don't remember which episode that was, but it was fairly early in the show's run.

The actor who played Geoffrey is married to an actress who appeared in a season 6 episode.  She was the posh lady who was going to adopt her poor cousin's baby.  It was also the episode Tom revealed he had been adopted as a baby.

Olly Rix said he wanted it to be as much of a real wedding as possible, so he did not see the dress until Trixie was at the church.

  8. Adding the cut scenes early:

    Spoiler

    Scenes they cut out:

They cut the beginning of the scene with Srs. Julienne and Monica Joan. Basically, it's Sr. Julienne telling Sr. Monica Joan that she's still recovering from her illness, and she needs to eat.

They cut a scene of Trixie having an engagement party at the clinic; she is cutting a cake while everyone sings "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow."  Then they show Mrs. Hopkiss eating a piece of cake and telling Trixie she hopes her real wedding cake is fruit and marzipan as you can't beat that. Trixie says absolutely and that in fact the cake is four tiers.  Mrs. Hopkiss says don't forget to save the top tier for the first baby's christening.  She says that since this is her third baby, it's going to have to make do with a Swiss roll from the market.

They cut the beginning part of the scene right before Trixie's brother shows up.  Phyllis says she found some Apostle spoons which came from "Uncie Ted and Auntie Sybil."
Trixie tells where to put them. Matthew says the whole thing is chaos and that he has no idea where anything is supposed to go.  Phyllis says that she did recommend they get a rolodex and that her advice was not taken.

They cut part of the scene with Geoffrey discussing possible hen party plans with the midwives.  Right after Nancy leaves, Phyllis says Trixie must do something even if it's just going to the movies.  Geoffrey says the last time he checked the only two choices were "Planet of the Apes" and "Brides of Dracula."

They cut a scene with Phyllis and Shelagh at the Turner home.  Shelagh is cutting out a pattern and Phyllis has some blue material she is cutting.  The Turner children are playing on the floor. Phyllis says she hopes they  aren't barking up the wrong tree and that she was full of bright ideas rummaging through the charity cupboard.  Shelagh says now is not the time to lose confidence and that they've already started cutting.  The doorbell rings and Patrick comes downstairs saying that dinner has arrived.  It's Arnold and Lizzie with some takeout from Uncle Li's restaurant.  Arnold says it's from Menu B and that Uncle Li put in some extras that aren't on the menu but that he thought their little girl might like to try them.  Arnold says he brought chopsticks.  He asks if they know how to use them and offers to teach them. Phyllis says she's always up for an adventure.

Shelagh and Lizzie are talking away from the dinner table. Shelagh says that Lizzie must allow them to pay for the dinner; Lizzie says that Uncle Li would have her guts for garters.  She then says that she didn't know how any of this was going to turn out but that she realized that if you go where love is, that's where life is.  Shelagh says she realized the same thing once and that it was the beginning of everything.

They cut part of the scene at the "Health Farm."  While the other midwives are relaxing, Miss Higgins is up with some sort of stretching device.  Phyllis hears her groaning so she lifts up a cucumber from one eye to check what's going on. They show Geoffrey and Sr. Veronica in the kitchen preparing food.  Geoffrey is squeezing oranges and Sr. Veronica is tasting something which looks creamy.  She puts a little on her cheek.  Also, Trixie relaxes in a bath  with rose petals in the water.

They cut part of the scene at the Turner house. Shelagh tells the clearly disappointed children that Colette is only going to the wedding because she is a bridesmaid, but that she will bring them some after dinner mints from the reception.  She also says they are on a strict timetable.

While I’m disappointed to hear that specific scenes were cut regarding Cyril’s trip to visit Lucille, it wasn’t necessarily a surprise to see his return to Poplar.  The viewers already knew the Buckles bought him airline tickets so I just assumed he had gone on his trip and was returning (between episodes).

No,  Cyril, with Lucille's agreement, used part of their savings to buy his plane ticket to Jamaica.  The Buckles arranged for the phone call to Lucille in Episode 5.

I would love to see some resolution as well but I can't believe such a religious couple would be divorced. Sadly, I don't think there is anything believable out there.  Either she has to stay or he has to go.

I think if they do get divorced, it will be portrayed as something that is very difficult for both of them.  And if they do get divorced, I can definitely see Cyril having a crisis of faith and deciding he is no longer fit to be the pastor of his church.

  11. I would love to see her come back so they can have a resolution of their marriage.  Divorce?  Legal separation?  Could there be a new love interest for Cyril towards the end of the season?

  12. Spoiler

    Scenes they cut out:

They cut part of the scene with The Turners and Miss Higgins.  She tells him that they've added some more conditions to the reportable list which will make more work for them. Dr. Turner says it's fascinating stuff that covers everything from food poisoning to leprosy. Shelagh says they haven't had a case of leprosy in a long time. Patrick says too bad the same can't be said of hepatitis.  He says they need to keep track of everyone that's come into contact with someone with hepatitis.  Miss Higgins says she will do so.

They cut a scene right before Shelagh goes to see Mrs. Mason.  The owner of the building where the Irish couple is squatting sees the broken lock and calls the police.

They cut a scene right after Shelagh sees Mrs. Mason.  Nancy asks Trixie if Matthew can help her find Paul and Imelda.  Trixie says yes, but that is more than likely because they've just moved on.  Nancy says she thinks she may have scared them off because she told them they couldn't have a homebirth.

They cut the second part of the scene with Nancy, Matthew, Trixie, and Sr. Monica Joan.  When Trixie comes down, she asks Nancy if she wants to come to the photoshoot with her, Matthew, and Jonty and they can pick up Colette.  Matthew agrees.  Nancy says no because there are no categories for her and Colette.  Trixie says Colette is hardly a bouncing baby but that maybe they could be a fabulous family.  Nancy doesn't think that's appropriate either.

Trixie then picks up Jonty and notices that Sr. Monica Joan has not eaten her sandwich.  Matthew says they can stay with her until she finishes eating, but Sister Monica Joan says she will not eat tonight.  Matthew and Trixie leave with Jonty but they both look very concerned.

They cut part of the scene with Trixie and Matthew at the cafe.  She tells him the RSVPs are flying in with everyone saying they'll be there with bells on.  Now they can get a start on the table plan.  Matthew responds "We?"  Trixie says she needs to know about any potential diplomatic incidents: warring aunts, kissing cousins and maybe she'll find out some family secrets.

She notices Matthew is distracted.  He says he's got another meeting with the solicitor about his father's estate.  Trixie says she's sure he'll make good decisions but Matthew says he hardly knows anymore and that he's tempted to just flip a coin.  What's the worst that can happen Trixie asks.  He says nothing too disastrous, just destroying his father's legacy and ruining their future.  Trixie, clearly trying to jolly him out of his mood, says is that all?

Adding the deleted scenes post early.

I'm getting confused as to the time period they're referencing. I thought we were still in the early 60s, but they were obviously alluding to Bette Midler starting her career at the Continental Baths. The Baths didn't open until 1968 and Midler's first appearance was circa 1970. Gay life, even in NYC, being as open and accepted in the early 60s as it was in the early 70s is a helluva time jump.

I was wondering about the James Earl Jones reference.  I know he was well-known in theatrical circles and did some television, but would he have been someone that would have been thought of for movies in the early 1960s?

  14. Scenes they cut out:

They cut a scene of Trixie on the phone talking to Nigel who is telling her about Heather being in labor.  She says Heather isn't on their books, but that she will be there right away.

They cut a scene right before Heather gives birth of Sr. Veronica at the Buckle's shop asking Violet if she can have her slot at the surgery Thursday night.  Violet says no because it's important for her constituents to speak to her.  Sr. Veronica says that they (the people taking part in the clinic) are also her constituents, and it's a council initiative.  Violet says they can have the slot after hers which belongs to the Spanish dancing teacher who is on holiday.  She also says she will see that Fred takes part with his paper boys.  Sr. Veronica says "paper boys?" and looks rather concerned.

They cut a scene right after Dr. Turner and Nurse Crane are telling Heather they have to notify her parents about the baby.  Violet is in Cyril and Lucille's flat and he tells her that his stitches have been removed, and the nurse says he is doing well.  He and Lucille have decided that it will be a good use of their savings for him to buy a ticket to Jamaica; he has holiday and sick leave so it will be two weeks. She asks when is he going.  He says Nurse Crane is driving him to the airport in the morning.

Violet says that she can't think of anything better than for him to be in the sun with the person he loves and for them to sort out any problems.

They cut out part of the scene with everyone having a meal at Nonnatus House. Right after Sr. Monica Joan says her heart always falls at the sight of sliced spam, Nancy says Colette loves it and that she tried spam fritters last week; she hands the plate to Matthew.  He says it's new for him too but you should try things once; he thanks Nancy.  Sr. Monica Joan sweetly admonishes him that gratitude should wait until after partaking. Sure enough, he takes a bite and it's clear he doesn't like it.  Trixie smiles as he drinks some water.

Phyllis then enters and says she has just taken Cyril to Heathrow.  Sr. Julienne says she hopes the trip is beneficial and that they see them both very soon.

They cut part of the scene at the clinic.  Dr. Turner is examining a young black boy who has a rash on his throat which he says he's had since halfway through the holidays. Dr. Turner weighs him and says he is very underweight.  He asks how often he eats.  He cheerfully answers he tries to eat at least once a day.  Dr. Turner gives him medicine for his rash and informs him Sr. Veronica can tell him about free school dinners.

They cut to the beginning of the scene where Patrick tells Shelagh that Joey has leukemia.
Angela, May, and Teddy all have wet heads wrapped in towels as if they'd all had their hair washed.  Shelagh says in a very chirpy voice, "Less than a week back and you've all got nits.  That must be a record."  The children giggle.  Dr. Turner, who has been on the phone, asks her to turn off the television, and she sends the children upstairs with a warning not to touch their hair.  They all groan.

It's not too young for perimenopause.  At least not in my mother's family.  Personally, I have no idea because I stopped having periods in my late 30s even though my hormone levels were not menopausal.

There's a character on Coronation Street who is going through menopause even though she is only 21.

She was saying that a NEW sample would test negative (awkward wording as the sample taken can only have one result).  She then went on to imply that she didn’t think she had miscarried. She’s a nurse, yes, but short of taking a microscope to the discharge, I don’t think she could know for sure. All of her symptoms, pregnancy/PMS could easily be exacerbated by late menses.  I do believe that Dr. Turner will be having the vasectomy as soon as it’s approved. Even if they’re both in their 40s, they’ll be in their 60s when the current brood leaves the house.

Dr. Turner is about a decade or older than Shelagh.  In real life, I think they have a 19-year age gap.

IWhen Matthew's father talks about the fact that Matthew never did "an honest day's work in his life," why doesn't national service count? Could his national service have been some sort of cushy office job so he never had to do "real work?" Hopefully someone who knows more about this can explain it.

Matthew trained as a medic during his national service.  In the Season 11 finale, after he tells Lucille that he thinks one of the patients that were brought to Nonnatus House from the train crash may have a compound fracture, she asks him if he has medical training.   He answers yes, from my national service.

  18. When I originally watched this,  I noticed they had changed the credits in the beginning.  Nothing major, but Georgie Glen is now bracketed with Annabel Apsion, Megan Cusack, and Rebecca Gethings.  Daniel Laurie has been bracketed with Zephryn Taite and Olly Rix.

That made me think Lucille was out.

BTW, if you're wondering where you saw Matthew's father before, he played the Vicar on "Downton Abbey."

I wonder where Matthew did his national service. Christopher did his in Korea. Tom did his in Kinloss.

A bit inconsistent on the characters- Lucille would have told Cyril she was staying in Jamaica not left it to a random phone conversation with her sister.

Lovely scene at the end with the new mum and her MIL after the tactless Sr. Veronica told her she’d be a single Mum now that her schizophrenic husband would be hospitalized indefinitely.  Good for Nancy to shut her up.

I think Sr. Veronica's point was that as a single mother, she would be getting help from the "welfare state."   The problem would be that she would have to live alone with little Mylene Florence and she didn't want to do that.

  20. I'm adding the cut scenes early under a spoiler tag:

    Spoiler

    scenes they cut:

They cut a scene right after Timothy talks to the woman about the bathing attendant job.  It's Reggie and Cyril going to visit Mrs. Wallace at her new drycleaning business.  Reggie has a picture and Cyril has a plant they brought to celebrate the new business.  The picture is of Jesus and Mrs. Wallace says that's the best kind of picture to have.  She asks if Cyril has any work for her, and he says he'll have his preaching suit for her on Monday.

She asks him about Lucille.  He says he got a letter from her yesterday and that she sounded on top of the world.  He thinks she will be booking her return flight any day now.

Right after the scene with Trixie and Matthew, they cut a really cute scene with Shelagh and the children in the Turner kitchen/dining area.  Shelagh scolds Teddy, telling him he's going to have to learn to like salad.  She then gives him a carrot for Genevieve saying that she loves her vegetables.  Angela observes that Genevieve is a rabbit.  Just then, Shelagh sees May pinch Angela.  She scolds her saying that if they don't stop this silly argument, neither one is getting a turn with the egg slicer.  Angela says cowboys and Indians is for boys.  May says that it's her birthday party.  Shelagh says May can have any kind of party she likes. Angela says everyone is going to make fun of her.

Timothy walks in and Shelagh greets him. He asks if it's salad and Shelagh says, yes, it is salad.  By the look on Timothy's face, Teddy isn't the only Turner male who doesn't like salad.

They cut a scene of Matthew and his father having a meal at Nonnatus House.  Sr. Julienne offers him some steak and kidney pie and he takes a big ladleful while Matthew grimaces.  Trixie says it's such a treat to have him there and she pats Matthew's hand; he agrees with her although he's obviously not sincere.  Nancy says it must be like meeting all the crazy relations up in the attic, and Sir Brigham says it's good to place faces with names and that next time, he'll bring his wife Lavinia.

Sr. Veronica says she might want to see Lisbon Buildings to see all the care Matthew has taken in the renovations as well as the money he's poured into it.  Sir Brigham observes, "Has he now" and it's clear he is not pleased.  Matthew looks somewhat chagrined.

  21. Did anyone else catch the anachronism in the Clark Gable joke?

Although it was revealed much later that Loretta Young's "adopted" daughter Judy Lewis was in fact her child with Clark Gable, it was not known by the general public.  TBF, it was kind of an open secret in Hollywood.

At the time of his death, Clark Gable's widow was pregnant with his son, but he had no publicly acknowledged children.

I don't think it's unusual for a child of a flighty parent to take on a parenting role. Temperamentally she might just be more serious minded/practical. Maybe not enough to take over the family finances, but enough to know that they're spending more than they should (especially if people at school are talking, and I can totally believe she's heard some comments about her mother being able to afford the fanciest clothes but not to take care of her own daughter.)

I think it may be more that Nancy kept talking about how they were going to get their own place, but Colette wasn't seeing a whole lot of proof that Nancy was actually doing anything to make that happen.  Now that she has that postal book,  Colette can see how her mother is doing.  Don't forget that Colette's teacher said she had a head for figures, so she may have already been figuring things out regarding Nancy's finances.

I agree with this - sometimes. Sometimes they have her being an utter snot bitch as she's trying to get her way and its very obvious and humorous that she's working the senile elder angle. But then there's the episodes where she's diverting phone messages or simply not relaying them and people come close to dying. Or the ones where she's wandering around Poplar at night in her nightgown. Or when she's stealing random shit from street vendors, or running off in the winter time to her childhood home.... I mean, I can go on but there's definitely been some storylines about Sr. Monica Joan not being mentally capable in a serious, dangerous, dementia way.

Yeah, I think you have a good point there, but those storylines happened in the show's early seasons.  I think they've stopped doing that in the later seasons.

  24. In the books, they say no one ever knew quite what to do with her since it was hard to tell if her behavior was part of her illness or if she was just having a laugh. Apparently, in real life, she was kind of a nasty snobbish bitch and her special target was Sr. Evangelina.   She was extremely well-read and had a classical education which she had no problem showing off especially if she made a fool out of Sr. Evangelina who usually had no idea what was going on.

I think her characterization now is that while she can no longer function as a nurse or midwife, she can still be helpful by doing simple tasks like providing comfort to scared patients or kind of babysitting the children in the clinic.  She's kind of a geriatric candystriper.

I do think they have written in her physical limitations especially since she has an assistant listed in the credits. I'm thinking now that the plotline where she broke her leg was because she was having trouble walking and they needed to show why she needed a cane

I never saw this thing where one minute she's intellectually challenged and the next she is a genius.  I think it's more that sometimes she's spoiled and willful and the people around her kind of indulge her in that.  I think she uses that to get her own way.

Sr. MJ was also the one who spotted the baby wasn't breathing and called for backup. When they write her as elderly, but not completely dotty, she's a valuable asset to Nonnatus House.

This felt like an old-school episode with lots o' nursin' and birthin' and lots of plot signals laid in: woman doesn't want a home birth...of course she's having a home birth.

It felt out of character for Violet to think Reggie was being lazy. She loves him very much, and you think she'd notice he was feeling poorly. Cyril turned out to be a very good friend and a wise pastor.

Changing times have been a major theme for the show since it began in post-WWII recovery, til the current Swinging '60s. The historical time period makes great change inevitable.

Whatever happened to the real-life Nonnatus House, I hope they keep the fictional one alive and working for years!

    '

I watched the show when it aired originally, and I'm not sure anyone would have asked a person with Down Syndrome for permission to do anything.  If someone were reasonably high functioning like Reggie,  maybe they would explain what they were doing, but that's about it.

I also wonder if Daniel Laurie might have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and they decided to write it into the show.
