  1. I think Caleb and Jena were leading the competition from very early on with Alex a somewhat distant 3rd.  I was surprised that Caleb won because I thought Jena was probably a little ahead of him in terms of popularity.

  2. It'll be interesting to see when the actual ratings come out and not just the overnights or the 18-49 demo.  I don't see it being that much better though.

About a year or so ago, the British paper "The Daily Mail" had screaming headlines that "Downton Abbey's  Christmas special (the one where Matthew got killed) finished in 9th place on the night and that this was proof that "Downton Abbey" was over.  Then the real ratings came in and it turned out the show actually came in 2nd out of all the shows aired that night.

Now, I don't see anything like that happening with IDOL, but I do think it's possible it will turn out they beat the VOICE recap show,   Now the fact they did so badly in the 18-49 demo is bad because that's the one that really counts but again, you have to wait for the real ratings to come out.

Regarding DialIdol, although obviously the program itself was useless, on their forum, the regulars there had Caleb beating Jena although they did point out that most other sites had a different prediction.

  3. Season 1: Didn't watch although I did know about the shocking boot of Tamyra Gray.  The first episode I watched was the finale and I thought they neither one was particularly good.  I thought Justin would win because he was a cute guy but I also found him a bit smarmy.  I thought Kelly was too screechy.

Season 2:  Clay all the way, baby!  Still my favorite Idol ever.

    Season 3: Diana DeGarmo

    Season 4: Bo Bice

    Season 5: Bucky Covington

Season 6: Melinda Doolittle/Jordin Sparks but wasn't really all that invested.

    Season 7: Jason Castro

Season 8: Danny Gokey/Kris Allen. I liked Scott MacIntyre too although I never considered him a threat to make it very far.

Season 9: Crystal Bowersox.  I also liked Michael Lynche.

    Season 10: Casey Abrams

    Season 11: Phillip Phillips

Season 12: Candice Glover but not particularly invested

    Season 13: Caleb Johnson.

  4. Two others for me would be "Make Way for Tomorrow" and "Penny Serenade."  I also try to watch "Death Takes a Holiday" whenever it's on if only because it's almost never shown.

One of my favorite Myrna Loy films is "The Rains Came."  She plays a  married promiscuous titled English woman who has an affair with a handsome Indian doctor (Tyrone Power) during monsoon season in a province called Ranchipur when a cholera epidemic breaks out.  The special effects (they were called something else back then) beat out "The Wizard of Oz" at the Oscars.

  5. They're showing one of my all time favorite "dumb" movies later this month on TCM: Garden of the Moon.  It's a semi-musical comedy about a nightclub owner (Pat O'Brien) who hires an unknown orchestra to play at his nightclub after his original choice (Rudy Vallee) is injured in a car accident  It's one of the movies Bette Davis refused to star in because it was so bad.

It's actually not very good but come on, how can you not love a movie with songs like "She's the Girlfriend of the Whirling Dervish?" or "I'm in Love with the Lady on the 2 Cent Stamp?"

  7. They did cut a couple of scenes from the original.  In one scene, Mater is on the couch holding Little Freddie when Chummy comes in. She tells Chummy that her husband is in the kitchen making a cup of tea and Chummy tells her that Peter does have a name.  Mater replies that they are perfectly happy with formal terms.

In another scene, Pete and Mater are playing cards and she tells him it would be alright for him to call her by her first name which turns out to be "Artemis."  He says it and then she tells him that her husband called her "Arthur" due to her large feet which she says she passed on to Camilla.  Peter says he loves Camilla's feet and she says "Good."

I don't remember if they showed this scene or not, but right after Sr. Julienne tells Jenny she won't be able to help Chummy with her mother, they show her training some new midwives from the London.

  8. TCM is showing "Mr Sardonicus" this month.  That's from the late great William Castle who always had nutty PR schemes attached to his movies.  It's always a must watch for me.

For newer movies, I love "Remember the Titans"  which is based on a true story about an African American man (Denzel Washington) who becomes the coach of a high school football team in 1970's Virginia after busing integrates the formerly all-white school.  It's filled with cliches and you know exactly what's going to happen but it's still a really nicely done movie.

A very young Hayden Panetierre plays a football mad little girl.

  9. I love "Till The Clouds Roll By."  Another example of the "lots of musical numbers disguised as a biography" genre is "Words and Music" which is a somewhat fictionalized version of the life of Rodgers and Hart.

If you like "Young at Heart", you'll probably also enjoy a trilogy of movies called "Four Daughters", "Four Wives" and "Four Mothers" which came out in the late 1930's to the very early 1940's.  Claude Rains played the father and I believe Frank Sinatra's character is based on the one played by John Garfield.

  10. Elliott has diabetes.

According to Wikipedia, Preston is Alex's middle name.  His last name is Philbrick.

I'm rooting for Caleb, but I think Jena is probably going to win this. I've heard both their singles this morning and I like them both.  They actually sound like music you might expect them to make.

  11. Sorry, I meant Cloris Leachman played his mother in "It's A Good Life."

ETA: According to Wikipedia, and IMDB, the other episode he was in was "In Praise of Pip;" he played Young Pip.  That was one that starred Jack Klugman.

  12. One of my favorites is more of a fun read than anything else: Hollywood and the Great Fan Magazines. It's a collection of articles, letters to the editor and crossword puzzles from the fan magazines of the 1920's to the 1940's.

I first read it when I was about 10 or 11 when I found it in the local library.  Unfortunately, over hald the book was missing due to people cutting out pictures and articles and the library ended up ditching the book. I kept trying to find a copy but since I could never remember the name, no one ever knew what I was talking about.

Then many years later, I was going through the 10 cent barrel at the bookstore and there it was, in perfect pristine condition.  Man, I scooped that baby up and bought it as quickly as I could.
