  1. ITA about the wife.  I don't think she quite grasped what was going to happen to her husband.  I think she thought the treatment would render him unable to father any more children, not that it would make him unable to have sex at all.

  2. FWIW, there were people back then who did believe that the treatment of Germany after the War was not a good thing.  One of them was British journalist Charles Edward Montague who referred to it as "a shabby epidemic of spite."

Having said that, he was a liberal and a pacifist who opposed the war but nevertheless lied about his age to enlist.  After this was discovered, he ended up with the generals and commanders behind the lines and in relative safety.  He had nothing good to say about them and their conduct of the war.

So there were people who thought that way back then.  I'm not sure Robert would have been one of them though.  But maybe enough time had passed that it was no longer something only liberals and/or socialists believed.

  3. Rupert Graves was also in the 2nd episode of "The Crimson Field" last year.

Ann Reid played Mrs. Thackeray the cook in the reboot of "Upstairs Downstairs a few years ago.  Sarah Lancashire was also in a couple of episodes playing a potential love interest for Mr. Pritchard the butler; it ended very badly though.  She is completely unrecognizable which is why I didn't realize it was her.

  4. You would have loved "The Tudors."  There were about a million characters named "Tom" or "Thomas" although to be fair, most of them were Lord Something or other so they didn't have their names used too often.

Getting back to Bates, although Thomas is technically above him in rank, he doesn't work for him.  Bates only works for Robert.  I think the only time the valet would need to work in any other capacity is if there is a big party and he would need to be an extra footman.  That was one of the reasons there was so much skepticism over Bates being hired as a valet: he could do the normal job of a valet fine, but he couldn't do the other tasks like being an extra footman.

Rob James-Collier always says that what Thomas resents is that he sees the Bateses all snug and cozy in their little cottage and everyone so happy for them and he knows he will never have that.

On the other hand, I think sometimes Thomas is his own worst enemy.  It's like he lashes out at people before they lash out at him and he really doesn't give anyone a chance.

  5. "Leave It To Beaver" did an episode which dealt with a recovering alcoholic who had done some work for them previously but who had to be fired because of his drinking.  They let him do some work again, but unfortunately he got Beaver to show him where they get their liquor and he ended up getting drunk again.

The problem was that June didn't want Beaver to know about the guy having a drinking problem so he didn't know not to give him any alcohol.

Eve Plumb played a terminally ill child on "Family Affair."   Uncle Bill arranged an early Christmas celebration for her and the kids ostensibly because he was going to be out of town for the real thing but Buffy at least what the real deal was.  The last scene is Uncle Bill going to comfort her when he hears her sobbing in her bedroom.

  6. Anna still calls Bates "Mr. Bates" and they've been married for at least 5 years.  It's funny how formal they are downstairs but it was a different time, I suppose.

I don't think the proposal was out of the blue at all.  Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes were clearly fond of each other and had a deep affection based in part on shared experiences.  I mean, I doubt if we're in for a storyline about the joys of senior sex next season.

To me, the broth episode had to do with the kind of silly childish games Spratt and Denker were playing against each other and that Violet was choosing to ignore because she was so distracted by the whole shenanigans with Prince Kuragin.  But since that's over now, she's telling them to knock it off.

  7. I think Michelle's only done the US PR tour once and that was for Season 4.  Allen Leech was supposed to do it this season but so far he hasn't been involved in anything.  I'm guessing he's still doing PR for "The Imitation Game."

  8. Cathy is in her sixties.  Incidentally she was still playing Peter Pan as of a couple of years ago.  She's actually really good.    Her version is as you might imagine much more physical with some gymnastic stuff put in, but she does a nice job with the singing bits and her acting is fine.

  9. Yeah,  I found that one too, but you're right, it's not complete.  It's too bad Syfy raced through the final credits because if you saw them originally, they were really cool.

Also, I think Sybil was kind of like Gannicus's Sura.  Spartacus made several mentions of how he used to gamble and be a bit of a rogue before he met Sura and that's the kind of influence Sybil had on Gannicus.

  10. Along with the credits, they had pictures of almost every character from the first season on.  Then at the end, they had the scene from Season 1, Episode 7 where Andy Whitfield yells "I AM SPARTACUS!!!"

They had the characters in different groupings so some got shown several times.

  11. I like the original nonmusical version of "A Star is Born" starring Fredric March and Janet Gaynor very much.

There's a story that Barbra Streisand wanted Elvis to do the remake with her but Col. Parker refused because Elvis would not have top billing.
