    This was nonsense.

Laura becomes last in the technical and showstopper that looks a mess (AGAIN) and slips through? Just because the judges had higher expectations of Hermine? Laura has screwed up week after week with underbaked and messy bakes and the judges say nothing. It's just mindboggling. They can get rid of a contestant who used a little too much chile pepper but Laura can serve up an underbaked cheesecake that's a blob on the plate and gets excused.

This seems harsh. Laura's had some bad bakes, but they all have. Her MO seems to be lacking in the presentation, but good flavors and generally good bakes, too. She's been scraping by, but isn't that bad.

I know that they have often said that nothing before each episode counts but I cannot believe Hermine, as star baker twice, was booted off just because of the poor show stopper.  She has been so consistently good from the beginning and Laura always just manages to squeak by.  I don't get it.

Hermine has had some not great weeks--and honestly, Hermine's second Star Baker was between her and Laura. This season has come down to show stoppers a lot; it seems like there's been a decent amount both of people saving themselves with show stoppers and dooming themselves. Hermine not having a set recipe she'd done before was her downfall, I think.

I guess I'm in a minority but I like Laura. I love how she's always up to laugh, and pokes fun at herself. She seems to be a happy, cheerful person, and I get the feeling that the competition is taking a lot out of her. She's seemed less bouncy the last couple of weeks. I also love her exchanges with Matt--I know she's a fan and it must be such fun for her ton trade quips and just casually say "Hey, Matt, can you get me a spoon?" or whatever.

Obviously, I like Laura, too. She seems to have a good attitude about everything, and I also just keep thinking about how much she must appreciate being able to hang out with Matt Lucas.

I'd be VERY surprised if Laura won, but you can never tell. Peter seems like the favorite, and I like Dave, too.

Tuned out at the halfway mark when every single team came out of their yurt to tell the sisters to yield the nerds.  Why do they care which of the  last two teams are eliminated?  Weren't they all just that morning saying that finally the blondes were out? It just seemed personal at that point.  I can't imagine how it would feel to know that every single team wanted me out, especially when there's no particular reason for it.

I don't think the teams--other than Will and James--cared which team was yielded; they just wanted the second-to-last team to yield the last team. Whether that was the Blondes or Leo & Alana didn't really matter. Just need to give themselves that cushion.

My boyfriend pointed out that Will & James are playing TAR likes it's Big Brother. They really shouldn't be "targeting" anyone; you just race as best you can. It's annoying. With the alliance, it doesn't need to actively break up; just everyone should start playing their own games. I don't mid its existence, honestly, but I do think everyone is putting more emphasis on it than it should have.

The movie studio was SO cool! That's one of those experiences where even if you get eliminated, it would be so cool to have done.

Have to say, I think the first time I ever saw Petroni was as a judge on "Supermarket Stakeout" earlier this year (I think that show came out this year, but this year has been a decade, so at this point it could have come out in 2017), and he's grown on me faster than probably any TV chef personality ever before. I really enjoy him.

I didn't like him on Food Network Star, so now I just roll my eyes whenever he pops up. I don't even remember why I didn't like him, other than that he needed to button his shirts more.

When introducing the challenge. Phil said: "This Roadblock gives teams a chance to drop into Berlin, when they do a face-forward rappel from the top of this 180' hotel. But as they plunge to the ground, they'll need to unscramble these letters to solve the word puzzle." This does not mean that the word puzzle was mentioned in the clue, but...

Maybe we will get confirmation one way or the other from racers after the race.

I assume it was mentioned in the clue or by the guy at the top of the building, but I think between climbing 15 stories, getting strapped into the harness, and walking down a building, the racers all missed it.

Eh, there was no guarantee that she would even have paid attention to the letters without him telling her about them, she was pretty scared on the way down. I think he'd already done his part of the bargain

I thought Will and James did better on their first song than Leo's team and Aparna's team did on their last.

Agree on both points. (Also, Hung and Chee were past the football players in the search for a taxi; if I were Gary and D'Angelo, I'd assume they had seen another taxi and were going for that one.) I'm REALLY hoping that Leo/Alana had to give that song a couple tries; Leo wasn't into it at all in the one we saw. The guy there didn't seem a particularly harsh judge.

I was wondering if there was going to be a penalty (Will/James) for abandoning their car.

I'm guessing that the crew examined it and determined that Will and James weren't at fault, but who knows? Maybe we see a penalty at the beginning of the next leg.

How did the lady not hear the other teams yelling the  unscrambled word?  And apparently the teams didn't have to go back up and walk the building again to figure out the word...

Well, the Blonde got it by going into the hotel and getting help. So apparently there wasn't a rule that they had to figure it out themselves--Leo and Apama also conferred.

The show needs to ditch the actors who play the flower/coffee people. They just waste time and seriously, what is wrong with these people just passing the inflatables and then going: "oh yeah, I should grab that now with 10 seconds left."

The wasting time is the point of those, but it's so frustrating to watch. I really prefer the setup where they need to find the coffee cup with their name on it.

Is it me or is the way they are filming the big sweep not as good as the original? That is my biggest problem with the show (not, Leslie, who I like quit a bit). The old show's big sweep just felt soooo satisfying. Now, it just feels a little strange and artificial.

I agree about the sweep still being a bit off. Leslie seemed to talk a bit more about the prices for things in this episode, so maybe they're still finding their way? They seem to be trying to create chaos. In the original, contestants couldn't knock stuff over--they'd be penalized for stuff on the floor. But this version doesn't seem to mind. I wonder if part of the problem, too, is that there are SO many aisles? They're all quite short, so there's a lot more turning corners, etc.

The combination of peppermint and lemon sounds so ghastly that I had a hard time believing that anyone who professes to be a baker would even consider putting them together.  The judges expressions upon tasting were comical.  I would have been inclined to eliminate Kess for lack of judgment.  Of the actual bottom two, I thought they'd send home the woman who underbaked her pie.  The Atlanta guy's pie didn't look good but it sounded like it tasted better than the other one.  Guess not.

It's frustrating how inconsistent these shows are; they're theoretically not cumulative, but Jeffrey was always going to go home before Megan, despite his pie apparently tasting better.

Similarly, I get annoyed at bakers getting dinged for their desserts not looking "holiday" enough, but there were multiple pies in this episode that were more fall themed (with leaves, etc.) and not a single comment. There was at least one dessert previously that had a very fall theme that got called out for not being more "holiday."

Totally agree. There is no chemistry in the group or with the judges, which is a huge part of the problem. One of my favorite things about the show is the sense of community and fun that develops among the bakers.

I think this group actually seems closer than in previous seasons, probably due to them being quarantined together. They have family there, but they've also mentioned a practice tent, where I'm sure they've been spending a lot of time together. They've talked a lot about becoming quite close, and I believe it.

Noel making sexual comments about Peter made me uncomfortable. Noel is gross not funny. Matt isn’t better.

Like tie Peter up, see him naked, Paul’s nipples taste like lime, seeing Paul naked... Just no.

Total agree on this. I didn't like the comments about Peter at all. And the spoon segments were done. It seemed like this week spent more time on Matt and Noel's hijinks, which I didn't need. The two of them see to get on quite a bit, but it isn't translating that well. I do enjoy Matt, though.

I think many pro athletes do take advantage of their athletic scholarships to do more than serve as a stepping stone to professional sports.  I once had a high school history teacher who went on to become a relief pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles.  His teammates called him "The Professor" because his favorite pastime in the bullpen (when not warming up) was conducting Jeopardy-like quizzes for them.

This sounds really famliar. Do you mind saying who it is? Asking as a big Orioles fan!

Is it me or was there no mention at all of Gary and DeAngelo for the first 25 minutes of the episode?  Didn't see them start the leg, didn't see them board a plane, nothing - all the while everybody else was already driving in Paris and even finishing their painting-matching task.  I thought I missed a minute at the beginning of the episode where the show explained how one of them got sick and they had to forfeit or something.  Only when the Beards (after having finished the paintings thing!) mentioned their alliance with the football players I knew there were still there.

They showed the first few teams leaving Paraguay, then basically skipped and showed the second group of teams getting on the later flight. It was a bit confusing.

Much as I don't like Will and James, probably my favorite part of the episode was Leo talking at the Roadblock about how bad they were at driving, and how he wouldn't be seeing them again--only for them to enter literally as he's talking. Just perfect. (I also don't like Leo and Alana, so I didn't mind him being shown up.)

I was trying to figure out exactly how far behind the blondes were at the end. We know they worked on their cello for three hours, and the football team took almost four hours to finish their watermelon pyramid. I wasn't sure how long the blondes were driving around but if it was less than an hour, there seemed like a possibility that they could beat the football players to the mat. I wasn't a huge fan of the blondes, but the marked difference in the last two teams to the mat was noticeable. The football players basically had a farewell/elimination speech but the blondes said on their way there that they just hoped that they got lucky and another team got stuck at the other task.

I thought the blondes were at the cello for 4 hours, too--so the two were pretty equal there. I am curious how far ahead the football players were; they had cleared the mat by the time the blondes arrived, so it obviously wasn't super close. I was annoyed that the show had the "7th place" for the football players and "Last Place" for the blondes--it took away suspense.

I was pleasantly surprised by how even-keeled the blondes were during this episode. I wouldn't have blamed them for a meltdown. Same for the football players, honestly; their attitude when they hit the mat, assuming they lost, was really good. Even at the watermelons, they were clearly frustrated but weren't tantruming over it.

Oh my lord, seriously. I don't mind Nancy that much usually, but that made me twitch a bit. They've often had early episodes in a season center around Thanksgiving (or fall in general), which I appreciate since I don't like going whole-hog into Christmas right after Halloween.

Nancy annoys me and it's for exactly this reason. More fall than the holidays? I literally swore at the tv.

  12. It looks like that one item--the Yeti cooler, the big teddy bear, the grill--is worth $300 and is just part of the normal things you can buy. (And apparently you just have to have your hands on it, not have it back over the line.) I'm still trying to figure out some of the nuances of the sweep; it seems like the limit on most things is 3 items, but the big cheese looked like you can only take 1.

So, presumably Will & James (I'm going to start calling them Will & Grace, too, I think) have now wasted their U-turn, right?  It's one per team per race, correct?  So they only have their yield to delay another team.  I hope they waste that, too.  Just sayin'.

I'm pretty sure they said there were only two U-Turns in the whole race, so I don't really look on it as wasting it. They have no way of knowing what position they'll be in when the next one pops up--if they're even still in the race.

The Beards are growing on me, unexpectedly.

  14. I appreciated Kaysar pointed out the he was gunning for Cody because Cody was basically set from the beginning--you win the first HOH and that means everyone talks to you, wants to set up alliances with you, and you have the power. Cody did a good job playing the game, but I wonder what the season would've looked like if someone else had won HOH. Though I'm sure people would still want to align with him.

And while I give kudos to Cody for playing the game, he also pretty much never faced any adversity. He was never in a bad position. Some of that was because of winning comps himself and his alliances, but a lot of it was also luck. It's hard to judge the game when nothing went wrong.

  15. In a lot of sports and things, it does come down to whoever can win that last game/series. I was disappointed that Renee didn't win, even if it did seem that Sinai made the better tasting cake. I really like the idea of a points system over the course of the competition. (However, I can't complain too much; there have been a few baking championships where I didn't like the best baker...who lost in the finals.)

They spent almost all their time on them gathering their bonuses and none on getting the groceries.  I also don't like the change that the can drag their inflatable around with them.   In the old version, you had to pick it up and immediately take it back to the register.

Contestants could always carry the inflatables/bonus items around; they just had to be at the checkout area (there's literally a line they had to cross) by when time ran out

What was with the shot of Dr. Will yawning in his underwear up on the balcony? Foreshadowing his return, or just another unseen clip from his first appearance?

Yeah, I wasn't sure which it was supposed to be. I'm going to assume an unused clip, though.

My favorite part was actually the montage of them requesting stuff from the Diary Room. I love seeing the more logistical side.

There's still one thing I wonder about regarding the rules.  If in the bonus sweep....the money is found without having solved the riddles....do they win?  Because on David's version....he never actually said they had to solve the clues first....just that you had to have the money in your hands before the Bell.   Because if it were me out there.... I'd claim the money and say I won.

I'm assuming that they don't have to say the answer to the clue--but I could be biased because that's how it worked in the original version. Just having the money in hand is enough. But I could be wrong, and I don't remember that first episode clearly enough.

But otherwise, I haven't watched TAR in literally 10 years and am really enjoying it. My boyfriend started watching after I stopped, so it's interesting comparing notes!
