  1. Four people standing that close to an exploding car wouldn't survive. However, this is tv, so theoretically we could get all of them back.

Since it stopped before the arrest of the mercenary, they still have to stop the prime minister from ordering a hit. And I presume that would put both Kate and the foreign minister in physical danger.

And in Hal's campaign speech at Chatham House, he talked about how his wife had been seriously injured in Serbia, and was in the hospital when the negotiation started. So I agree that PTSD is going to be a recurring theme in the next season.

Hal's eyes totally lit up when his old friend suggested that he be Secretary of State. So if he survives, he will try to make it all about him again. Great actor, terrible character.

  2. Count me In as someone who watched the first episode and then binged the rest.

Among my slight knit pics, or that the Crown is never actually mentioned. Isn't it protocol for the ambassador to the court of St James to present their credentials to the monarch?

And since the prime minister meets regularly with the monarch, they might have mentioned it more.

I'm thinking that the "James Bond clause" might refer to the fact that 007 had a license to kill.

I also think that Kate was damn right to be angry through most of the series, and through my hands up in frustration every time she trusted Hal again.

He set up his wife without her knowledge, to be put through her paces as a potential vice presidential candidate. He'd apparently screwed his career with the state department, and wanted to stay close to power.

She was also passionate about going to Afghanistan, to try to protect women's rights. Apparently it was a thing she had worked long and hard on. And yeah, that could be a breaking point when Hal took a plane that was meant to take refugees to safety.

The only people she could talk straight to were the British foreign minister, and, ironically, the president.

And Michael McKean was really good as the president. I put him up there with a lot of other fictional presidents. David St. Hubbins 4eva!

Now that the show has been renewed for a second season, I'm very interested in finding out who survived. And of course, if the actors get other jobs they can be written out.

And, if you like fast-paced thrillers set in London, if you haven't already, watch Slow Horses. Instead of British actors pretending to be American, it's British actors being really good British actors.

  3. Good summary! I won't mind if they get together in the last couple episodes of the last season. Danny being the father of a daughter will make his head explode.

So Frank takes away Treat Williams's daughter's courtesy card, and gives her HIS courtesy card. Enabling much, Frank? So many "rough patches!"

The main plot of the guy out to get Baez was underwhelming. She knew who the guy was. They got the guy. No red herrings, no false accusations (The Danny Reagan Special), and where the hell did a guy just out of prison get the money to buy fancy flower arrangements and a house IN CASH?

I like the relationship Eddie has with her partner; they go well together without having to worry about "chemistry." And yes, Jamie IS Sergeant Flawless!

Does George have the summer off of work, or does his coaching job continue to be active in the summer.

I also think George would be the better parent to escort Sheldon (he did fine in California), but in Texas, I bet 2-a-days (football practice) start in midsummer. And George needs to keep his job.

It also occurred to me that maybe Pastor Jeff feels bad about the way Mary was shunned and since they don't seem to have a bookkeeper anymore, dipped into church funds as a way to deal with his guilt. It's a big handwave, but I could see it.

I also agree with those who think it was the cop who broke into Meemaw's gambling parlor in a bid for "protection" money.

On the other hand, Danny Thomas (I mean Stevens) IS.

Yes, that was definitely a take on Danny Thomas. I agree with Midge, he wasn't hitting on her (that was Gordon projecting). I almost wish Midge had taken the gig...I think she could have been a good writer. But that would be a whole different show. (And Hank Azaria is always a pleasure to see! The character did not come across as being anything but honest. Presumably, he goes on to found St. Bude's Hospital!)

I'm glad that we had that earlier flash-forward that showed that Esther at least had her grandfather to talk to. I was worried Abe would not acknowledge a GIRL with the "Weissman knowledge." And Midge and Joel have always acknowledged that Ethan's not the brightest kid, and they are okay with it.

We're also seeing self-destructive Susie when she tries to convince James not to take the Paar show. She manages him, too! And Midge actually held her tongue and acted like a pro when she interacted with Pete from Parr. It's one of the first times we've seen her do it. And going into the bathroom and crying is a perfectly valid at-home reaction.

My thoughts are that Ted is like Mary Poppins (Apologies if that isn't an original thought and I read it here or somewhere else - it is not my intent to take credit for someone else's idea).  He showed up, helped out some people and then will move on, leaving everyone in a better place.

Mary Poppins, Nanny McPhee. Jesus. ;-)

I think it was absolutely inevitable from the beginning that Ted would move on, and my real hope is that when he does, HE's achieved the kind of healing & integration he's brought about at Richmond. (I'm still hoping we see Doc Sharon again).

(I also love that they've continued letting the fans watch practice. It's a great marketing move.

A thing I also realize in this era of limited-episode series that might be extended is that it's very hard to keep supporting characters around because of course they've got other jobs. Perhaps that's why we've seen so little of Keeley with the team this season (isn't she doing next season of Fargo?) And Doc Sharon might also be busy on a series or film.

(Of course all bets are off for ANY new series/next seasons, at least in the US, with the WGA strike. Solidarity!)

There are many, many studies on seatbelt use in pregnancy and, as long as the lap part of the belt is under the uterus, it poses virtually no risk to the baby.

Now you've got me thinking about that 9-1-1 episode where a pregnant woman was on her way to the hospital and the car was struck by lightning or something and the baby POPPED out, and they had to find the baby, cut the cord, and get the woman out of the crushed car! Oh, and Buck got struck by lightning and died, but only for 3 minutes, and it turned him into a math genius.

I wonder if Jade is in London on a work visa. I don't see Rupert simply hitting on her. Buying the restaurant, firing her, and causing her to be deported seems more his speed.

Well, until Brexit, Poland was part of the EEC, and people could go to different countries to work without a lot of permits and visas (and a lot of Poles came to England and Ireland because there were jobs). I don't know how it is since Brexit, but the right wingers might be pushing to get everyone who's not a British national out.

  9. I think we're heading into the final act: Ted is getting ready to take his leave, and we're seeing how he's changed the people he came to work with.

Roy is definitely becoming the leader who will step into Ted's shoes. The press conference (when he finally showed up) was masterful, and he's allowing himself to show pleasure in his accomplishments. (Loved Beard fainting when Roy said something nice to the team.)

    HAIRY ASS!

Coach Beard is still a goddam weirdo who probably wouldn't be able to get  job anywhere else. (Joe Walsh better than Jimmy Page? COME ON!) And Rebecca is right about "the guy from Cream" (Eric Clapton, even if he is a racist anti-vaxxer).

Will Kitman is kind of a smart guy, and he feels comfortable contributing.

Rebecca is coming into her own full Boss Bitch.

Keely's back to spending more time at Richmond (we don't know the status of her business, but if Jack had shut it down, I'm sure we would have heard about it).

Jamie is still enough of a prick to be interesting, but has enough self-awareness to laugh at himself.

Interesting that Isaac picked Sam to be captain when he wasn't there. It makes sense, but Sam is one of the youngest players...I guess it shows how they all respect Sam.

And the Isaac/Colin scene at the end was sweet. I find it had to believe that Isaac is REALLY that clueless about gay people, but his making the effort was beautiful.

I also wish we'd seen Colin coming out to the team...but I'm okay that we didn't. Also: Are you comparing being gay to being a Denver Broncos fan? What's a Denver Bronco?

Side note: Ted must be loving the last couple of seasons for Kansas City in the NFL, and I'll be he LOVES Mahomes.

    Still don't care about Nate.

  10. I felt bad for Long Island skin guy...while his condition was marginally improved with treatment, it didn't seem a LOT better. And he's probably got a lot of scarring from years of scratching.

And it's sad that it's so hard for people to have decent dental health in this country. Being able to eat properly is hugely important to overall health.

It also got to me that the neurofibromas  (as Dr. Lee said) can be overwhelming, and it doesn't seem like there's any real treatment for them. A lot of rare diseases don't have a specific treatment, and people are left looking like all the previous patients that were shown.

  11. I hope so too. A lot of the season-long arcs were paying off.

Bentley and Brandy racing out of the buildings as the shooting went down was heart-stopping. And Brandy, at least, showed that she'd become a part of the community, and that the pilot project that put her there was working.

(And the two of them work better as friends)

The rookie cops showed that the Academy was not sending its best to East New York. I kept expecting Dempsey to bust out with something racist.

They were also setting up the show for a season of a mayoral campaign, and Jimmy Smits was playing a long game...though you couldn't tell whether he knew it himself.

The story about the homeless guy's murder was sad and well done, and Killian was not an asshole.

    Come back, show!

Not just because you're an interesting police procedural, but because you create hundreds of jobs for New Yorkers.

  12. Not to be That New Yorker, but FIT (where the boutique worker was a student) is a public school, part of the State University of New York, which means its tuition is a LOT lower than a private school (like Pratt). So her loans would not be the kind that cripple for decades, and NY State has help for students who stay in state. Quibble over.

I think Dee is reacting like a middle-class teen encountering the subtleties of racism, classism, and how it will affect her in the adult world. Racism always an underlying theme on this show, so Dee's experienced it, and had her Aunt Vi and Mom to guide her, but as she gets ready to make her own decisions in adulthood, she has to experience some things for herself.

She's 17 (or so) and going to have to parse her own way through the world for herself.

As for the CIA mission, i felt like filler. Don't like Robyn being called "mall cop," which is f*cking disrespectful. The SIM was the McGuffin, and we got to see the Casablanca parting at the airport. Sweet.

Also did not care about Mel/Harry and the house in CT. I don't believe they were ever that type, anyway!

  13. Who called it last week? That Maddie would propose to Chim? Take a bow...

And Buck the Ho had a lot of splainin' to do to his death doula darlin'. Who else predicted that Buck would end up raising the kid? I hope you're not right!

They did that "whole relationship in flashbacks" thing with the guy who died of brain cancer and his wife...it was touching. (Not as touching when they did it with the gay couple who'd been together many years).

I knew Bobby was going to take Adrienne Barbeau to her wedding because she complimented his hat. He's a sucker for firefighter flattery.

    Eddie's a dweeb. A good-looking one, but I just don't care.

  14. I picked out the arsonist at his first appearance. And Jamie is a better detective than Danny. Didn't punch anyone, didn't throw anyone in a car trunk, just kept methodically asking questions, going through the evidence. Boring. ;-)

And Eddie was right that she needed to avoid the appearance of conflict of interest. But it was all downhill after that. CCRB is somewhat toothless, and her union lawyer would have been all over the fake lawsuit. They didn't need Grandpa Teeth to come to the rescue.

I do like how much Eddie has grown to love and trust Frank.

  15. He's got the weight of the world on his shoulders...I remember that episode of The Crown where the Queen met with one of her titled subjects, who eventually renounced his title because he thought the idea of nobility was wrong. I wonder if they are planning something like that for Matthew.

  16. On second watch: Susie's great day happens when she's playing with Harry Drake's clubs.

Gideon Glick is listed in the credits, but I don't recall seeing him. Could he be the old guy with the beard in front of the Friars?

If Joel really took the fall for the Mob, and didn't give anyone up, they made sure he was protected in prison, and he probably does have money stashed offshore.

He probably made them more money than Midge would have.

And Midge says she's "feeling nostalgic" in the video. That gives me a bad feeling...like she's getting her affairs in order.
