  1. Does it signify that the top 4 are all Southerners from neighboring states? It was weird they even used the scrolling map device in the opening sequence when the "scroll" was like... an inch each time.Nick Who? was boring on the show, so a boring single certainly doesn't help.    Yeah, but in what alternate world is Ray Romano some cool person people are awed about seeing?  Stupid synergy tie-ins!My big problem with Dalton's was that a lot of that sounded like people were reading off scripts. Some of the stuff those girls said, and definitely that old lady with her reading of "they didn't make 'em like that when I was a young girl". And Dalton's own parts too, like "Leeeeeeetssss gooooo".

Ray Romano is a legend. Who wouldn't be excited about meeting him? I know I would. His career peaked right around the time I and the final 4 were growing up, mid to late '90s, so I/they probably grew up watching him. I've always been a fan of his sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond.

The things people said in Dalton's package probably were scripted. Producers probably fed them lines. Everyone's package had shades of that though. *shrug*

  2. Is anyone else confused by the comments in the performance thread where people are saying he sings with a faux Brit accent? I literally don't hear that at all when he sings. Somebody like Thomas Stringfellow was someone who did that, but not Dalton. Not even close?!

  3. I follow Rick on Twitter, watch his Periscopes, and am subscribed to his email list where he sends tips on how to navigate the music industry and learn how to build an audience. He also has a free eBook about it too.

He gives a lot of really good advice about how to get noticed by the contestants on social media. It's really insightful and he seems like a great guy. I really enjoy all of the information he shares and appreciate him trying to help fans connect with their favorites.

I did notice Dalton is using FB much more than he was a couple weeks ago.

  4. MacKenzie -

Hallelujah - Honestly aside from Roses I think this was his best performance and if he had to leave, this was the song to go out on. I thought this was beautiful and a return to what he does best, just him with the guitar. The moon backdrop was especially beautiful too. This was the only song I bought on iTunes besides Dalton's. Sure, did we need to hear the 1,000th rendition of this song? Not really. But Mac did a beautiful job IMO so I'm ok with it. Glad he got to redeem himself after last week before leaving. I heard he plans to record and release Roses soon as a single, I'm very excited and happy for him about that. It's a great song.

    Dalton -

Calling You - This was pretty and sweet and I would say even had a hint of magic in it, but I saw him sing this at his hometown visit concert and the way he sang it there was just him and the guitar and I honestly preferred that more intimate arrangement. Wish he had done it like that instead. He just gets consistently drowned out by the band and I think he should try something more stripped down and acoustic for a change. It's really what suits his voice the best.

Dancing in the Dark - I thought he sounded really good on this, vocally, especially in the beginning on the slower part. I still don't get the "he can't sing" comments. He doesn't have the biggest range or most powerful voice, but his voice has a very beautiful tone IMO. He does a lot of subtle things with his voice that most people might not pick up on, like at times there is a gentle fragility and vulnerability to it (God Only Knows), and at other times a grit comes out at just the right moments of a song, which he did a lot of here. He plays really well with different colors and textures of his voice and honestly I think is a more skilled vocalist than most people are willing to give him credit for. Very underrated IMO. Anyway, I liked this and bought it on iTunes, though haven't listened to the full thing yet. JLo bouncing in her seat was ridiculous and distracting though. I don't think this was a great choice for a competition, nor this far in the game, but it did feel like a "we're at your show" type of performance. I could see him doing this in concert, just for fun.

Everybody Wants To Rule the World - I'm going to have to agree the key was a bit too low for him. However I went and listened to the original and I really prefer the key Dalton chose. Overall I don't think it was an issue for him, it was just a few notes that were too low for him that he basically gasped because they were so low. The higher key was probably too high so there was probably not much he could do. I hate it when the judges criticize a contestant's performance of a song THEY chose. On paper this sounded like a good choice but clearly there was an issue with getting a correct key for him.

    Trent -

Tennessee Whiskey - Gorgeous. Really nothing more I can say than that.

Drink You Away - This, on the other hand, was not. I think this was a good performance of an awful song. I couldn't tell what the hell this song was supposed to be or sound like. Terrible. Trent did what he could with such a god awful sounding "song" I guess.

Waiting Game - Again, gorgeous. One of the best of the night. Great way to end the show and to leave CBS Television City with.

    La'Porsha -

Glory - Fantastic. Probably the best of the night. She just came out and slayed this. Felt like a superstar performance.

Stay With Me - I didn't like this really and that's probably because she didn't either. Scott was a huge dick for picking this, knowing her backstory. Getting into a character is like if you're Carrie Underwood singing Before He Cheats, asking someone who just got out of an abusive relationship to sing a song about staying with a man is just a bit too much IMO. I liked La'Porsha's clear but polite shade at Scott for picking that. We all know he did it on purpose to try to throw her under the bus even further than he already has been doing for the last several weeks. Seriously, La'Porsha isn't even a favorite of mine, but every single week in his interviews he throws her under the bus somehow and that annoys me so much. It's really disgusting. Go La'Porsha for standing your ground!

Hello - Meh. Don't care for her version, sorry.

Overall I think each of them won one round. I would say La'Porsha easily won the first round with Glory, Dalton won second round with Dancing in the Dark (Trent's song was a mess and LP clearly wasn't feeling hers), and Trent won the third with Waiting Game.

I wasn't surprised La'Porsha was in B2. She didn't have her strongest performances last week and Dalton's fans rallied after he was in B2. Maybe her fanbase is not as big or strong as people think it is.

My prediction next week is La'Porsha and Dalton will be B2 and Dalton will go home. He was ok in his performances tonight but IMO didn't have a moment with any of them and at this point in the competition you need to have moments and not just "pretty good" performances. Trent and LP came out swinging hard tonight, and there was no way he was ever going to match them vocally. I'm glad he at least brought out the theatricality and performance quality as that's what he does best, as well as interpreting lyrics and telling a story. As much as he's my favorite and I want to see him in the finale, I'm ok with him bowing out in third. He's getting so much hate as it is for even being top 3, I don't really want him getting even more negativity if he makes it into the finale over LP or Trent, let alone if he won. And this way he is free to sign with whatever label or management team he wants and isn't bound by any contract. I heard next week all 3 get to sing in the first round, so hopefully that means there will be no Jaxing of the eliminated contestant. As long as he doesn't get Jaxed, I'm ok with him leaving in third. Although my preference for a finale is Trent and Dalton. If it comes down to Trent and LP I'm rooting for Trent.

    Other:

Hometown packages - As usual, sweet and touching. I really loved MacKenzie's and Dalton's the best. I can't handle Dalton crying, but I'm glad at least this time they were happy tears. It was sweet how he was so touched by everyone's support. And MacKenzie talking to the kids about hope was so touching. I wonder if that's why he has an issue with sounding so breathy when he sings, was because of the illness he went through, they said something about lung failure or something, and I wonder if that could explain the reason he sounds so limited and breathy when he sings. I loved the segment in La'Porsha's when she was speaking at the women's shelter. So inspiring. All 4 of them seem like such down to earth, sweet, humble, kind people. It's a shame there won;t be a tour this year. I honestly would have gone for the first time just to see Dalton, although I also would have enjoyed seeing the others. Honestly the entire top 10 from this year could have made a great tour, such a wide variety of styles and genres. Avalon is jumping on a tour with someone though, so I guess this gives them the opportunity to tour individually. Guess I'll catch Dalton on his solo tour.

Yes Harry's comment to La'Porsha about looking "graceful" was weird to me too. I got the sense he was shading artists like Miley, etc. who wear skimpy clothes onstage.

Didn't care for Keith's performance at all, aside from the guitar playing. What is that song? Is that supposed to be country?

The contestants meeting Ray Romano and doing voice overs was cute. La'Porsha sounded like a natural and Trent and Dalton were cute with their roles. Don't know who the hell that Vine artist was supposed to be. Don't care. They make the contestants waste time with this shit instead of rehearsing more? Yeesh.

  5. I do agree the key was too low for him, however when I went and listened to the original I decided I did prefer the key that Dalton chose. And overall I don't think it was an issue for him, just a few notes that were beyond his range that he basically gasped out.

I don't think Dalton is a weak or poor singer at all. Does he have the biggest range or most powerful voice? Hell no. But his tone is beautiful. And he does a lot of subtle things with his voice that most people wouldn't notice, for example, sometimes there's a soft vulnerability to it (God Only Knows), other times there is a grit that comes out at just the right moments of a song (he did that a lot on Dancing in the Dark). He knows how to make the best use of the voice he has IMO. He knows how to play with color and texture of his voice instead of sounding one-note through the whole song. He's a lot more skilled than most people are willing to give him credit for IMO.

  6. I'm pretty sure IM5 was associated with Disney in some way though? They used to perform at Radio Disney events and even did a video with Disney star Bella Thorne. I don't know for sure because I haven't researched that deeply into IM5 but I'm inclined to think they were indeed associated with Disney in some way. Almost every article about Dalton mentions that I think.

  7. I know that Dalton's girlfriend in particular seems pretty private. All her social media is private. She might not want any of the attention that comes with dating a celebrity, considering Dalton had a small following before Idol. I can't speak for Trent or Mac's SOs. I'm sure they all probably get a bit of hate from some of the immature fans and maybe just don't want to deal with the drama or worse, possibility of death threats. It happened to Selena Gomez when she started dating Bieber. I don't blame any of them for wanting to be out of the spotlight.

I have this ominous feeling that Dalton is getting eliminated tonight :( Hope I'm wrong. I don't think he's gonna win at this point but I at least want him to make top 3.

ETA: Also it is pretty common on these shows not to mention past projects a contestant has done. It ruins the illusion that they're just some nobody from the middle of nowhere who has superstar potential. It's the narrative they want to build. They pretended like Carrie was just some farm girl when she actually almost signed a record deal at 14. Also for network reasons I don't think they can mention competitiors like Disney or if they appeared on other shows like The Voice.

  8. It really peeves me off that the DFW area is lacking in their support of Dalton. I am happy that The Wolf (a country station, folks!) and KVIL (pop station) are supporting, but the local KISS FM apparently can't be bothered. I have stopped listening to them. If this was Kelly Clarkson, they would all be competing for her attention.

I will say that Texans, in general, are very fair-weather. I am a die-hard Cowboys fan, but when they are not doing well, people drop support in droves. Upsetting. I wish I had made a sign last weekend that said Fort Worth loves Dalton.

A couple of gals drove from Nashville to see him! I hope they got pics, autographs and a big hug.

I am trying to find song spoilers, but no luck yet.

I can't find any song spoilers yet either. Hope the judges and Scott picked good songs for him.

That really sucks to hear his own area doesn't support him much. WTH? It's the last season. Isn't it exciting that a local is in the finals? I realize Dalton has been kicking around awhile and is sort of a local celebrity so maybe it doesn't have quite the same impact a complete unknown would, but still.

  9. The analysis is interesting but I don't think the majority of the audience honestly thought about it that deeply nor did it contribute to why they did or didn't vote. I think it's because of a few reasons:

    1. Being female and being what the Idol audience loves to call "a pageant bot." A lot of the audience was turned off by the Disney princess dresses.

    2. Coincidentally on top 6 night when they showed everyone's sob story, Sonika was the only one who didn't have one. We had Dalton talking about his bipolar disorder, Trent with the death of his best friend, MacKenzie almost dying of heart failure, and La'Porsha's abusive relationship. Sonika's biggest struggle was being shy on American Idol. I heard later on that she had been severely bullied in school so I was curious as to why she didn't choose to talk about that as her struggle instead, but regardless, her story obviously paled in comparison to the others.

She came into the show being labeled as being from Martha's Vineyard and I think people have always had a vibe from her that she comes from a well off family. She's never appeared relatable in any way and I think that was part of the reason for her downfall. Let's not forget the bitch edit she got in Hollywood Week group round either, even though I think she was mostly a victim of editing there and otherwise has proven herself to not be that person they showed at all.

    3. She never showed a lot of her personality. IMO she was always just far too shy for the most part. I relate a lot to the shyness thing and it's hard to open yourself up to America, especially knowing you'll get criticized, so I understand why it was difficult for her to do that. But on these shows you have to make a connection with the audience and show who you are as a person besides just as an artist. The fact she didn't is probably why she didn't make enough fans to survive in the voting.

  10. Smart! Yeah, if young gals know he is taken, it ruins fantasies. Heh. She is a very normal-looking, cute girl. :) He will always have my support as well...unless he becomes a serial killer or something, then you know, deal's off. Ha!

He's claimed in the past that he is contractually not allowed to talk about his relationship status and I seriously thought he was just making that up so that he wouldn't have to talk about it, but I'm really thinking it might actually be true because I know Trent definitely has a GF (she was shown at his audition) and I heard MacKenzie has a girlfriend as well yet neither of them ever talk about them, show them, or mention them. I think Idol believes it will make them lose votes, even though I think most fans are mature enough to not let that affect the way they feel about them as artists. It certainly never stopped Phillip from winning lol

I really doubt Dalton would ever become a serial killer lol Although he is certainly killing a lot of people with his music and those deadly blue eyes lol

  11. I agree! He's a total rockstar but he's also very sweet and humble. The whole package.

He's very good with kids which is probably one of the main reasons he has the job he has. I definitely think he'll be a great dad someday. So cute!

I'm 22 so I have no shame in crushing on him lol He does have a GF in real life though. She was shown for about 2 seconds in the audience after his God Only Knows, sitting beside Dalton's mom. I noticed they didn't put a label on who she was nor show her anytime after that lol Dalton still has my votes no matter what!

The girl that held his phone- I don't know how she kept her composure standing beside him while he was singing! You could see on her face how excited she was though. Aw!

  12. Bluwater that sounds amazing! I'm so jealous lol but happy for you that you got to meet him and experience all of that.

Luckily thanks to Twitter I saw photos and Periscope videos from all the respective events. I'm sure a lot of it will be uploaded to YouTube soon.

I too can't wait to see the package on Thursday. Get the tissues ready! I saw what he tweeted after all the events and it was the sweetest thing. Like you said, he's just so sweet and humble. He's an angel. I seriously don't get at all how anyone can hate on such a beautiful person like him.

Yes his reaction to them showing the IM5 video was hilarious! They should have showed the Disney Dudez one where he was dressed like Cinderella though lol I bet even that video is not as embarrassing for him as the one they showed lol I don't get why that one in particular is so bad? I watched the entire video online and the song is honestly garbage and the dancing is pretty hilarious but Dalton is still as cute as can be in it.

  13. McPhee was standoffish, condescending, and downright nasty to the other contestants and fans and walked around with a sense of entitlement. She told Kellie Pickler that she (Kellie) didn't deserve to be there and should go home. Regardless of whether someone agrees with her or not it was not her place to say that to Kellie or any other contestant. What a bitch. I hate her worse than any other contestant that was on the show and there have been some real hateable contestants.

Wait what? When did she say that? That was my first season watching and I think I was still in middle school so that whole season is pretty foggy to me. I hope she didn't actually say this on camera did she?

Speaking of Katherine I forgot all about her performance. I kind of preferred when she sang SOTR the first time on the actual show, and aside from whatever bad personal traits she may or may not have, I remember loving that performance from her. But talk about vocally great singers- well she's probably easily a better singer than Dalton and yet she doesn't interest me.

I get to some people vocals are #1 in a singing competition. But that doesn't mean it is for every viewer. I think if people only voted based on vocal talent we wouldn't have ended up with half of the winners we did. Yet go figure that Taylor Hicks still ended up with a successful Vegas career, Scotty McCreery a #1 platinum selling album, and Phillip a quintuple platinum single. In comparison to Katherine whose music career really went nowhere, Haley Reinhart whose album never gained any kind of momentum (although has a steady gig performing with PMJ), and Jessica Sanchez whose album basically flopped. If all that matters is a good voice then why didn't any of them become stars?

No matter how many times people say a singing competition should be about the singing, it never really is. By the time we get to Hollywood Week, most of those people can sing. At that point there's gotta be other qualities that make them stand out besides that.

The main thing that just really gets under my skin is that all over the place I see people where, it's not enough for them to just say they don't like Dalton and leave it at that. They have to find ways to invalidate him as an artist and find reasons why people shouldn't vote for him or act like people have no reason to like him. Like because they think he's untalented it means he actually is and that everyone should think that about him. Saying he's only there because of his looks and saying his fans only vote because he's cute is pretty insulting not just to Dalton but to his fans as well.

The reason that's most especially annoying is because from what I've seen Dalton's fans are pretty respectful towards the other contestants and their respective fans. Notice how I expressed what I felt about LP, Trent, and Mac without ever invalidating their artistry or acting like their fans shouldn't like them. I just said they don't do anything "for me" and left it at that. Dalton's fans are one of the overall nicest groups of people yet we are targeted the most with hate and insults (not saying anyone here was being hateful but just in general).

    • Love 1
  14. LP and Trent may have both but they really don't appeal to me artistically the way Dalton does. It ain't just all about who sings the best and technical ability. I do enjoy Trent's artistry to an extent but... Dalton just does it for me more than anyone else. I connect with him so much on both an artistic as well as a personal level. It probably helps that I've sought out a lot of his original music and watched him in interviews, basically anything I can see, hear, or read about him. None of the others inspired me to do any of that. Like I said, at the end of the day, it's about who you personally connect with. People can shout at me all they want to about how Trent and LP are the better singers on a singing competition- I really don't care. They don't interest me. Dalton is the one who interests me and grabs me. He's the one I'm going to buy a CD from and go see in concert. That's all there is to it.

  15. Dang I'm pretty sure I posted in here but it seems to be gone? Ugh.

Congrats on meeting him bluewater! Did you hug him? You're so lucky to have met him! Can't wait to see your photos, videos, and hear what he sings at the concert!

  16. I think we all got the point.  Not loving a performance doesn't mean it went over your head, necessarily.  I actually thought he sang both songs well and sounded really good.  I just think he's overacting.  It's an opinion, not an assertion of fact, an insult to your tastes or a comment on his worth as a human being.

IMO people still commenting on his lack of vocal ability shows they missed the point of the lyrics.

  17. Y'all can read what I thought of Dalton in the main discussion thread so that way I don't have to post it twice. ;)

But ugh I can't with the hate he's getting lately. I just don't understand why people think he's fake and all this stuff. And wish the "he's only there because of looks" comments would stop. [snip] You don't like him fine, but don't assume because you don't like him that it means he doesn't deserve to be there or that other people don't have reasons for voting for him. Ugh.

I'm jealous/happy for those getting to view his hometown festivities today! Please take plenty of pics and videos for us! Give him a hug from me! Wish I could be there. I can't wait until he does a tour and hope he comes to my area so I can see him live. I would love to meet him too and just squeeze the bejeezus out of him lol

  18. Fox released a list of all the alumni that will be part of the final (tons) and the only winner not included was Phillip.

I noticed that. I think it's because of the contract lawsuit. They even invited Candice and Caleb back.

  19. I'm curious why you dont think they do? At one time Idol was actually based on talent and many times talent won out in the end. I would hope when it comes right down to it being "cute" or being able to strum a guitar would be a lesser thing in what gains someone fans. Its been hashed out why and how social media "followers" dont really matter so lets just say fanbases are building organically based on talent and strength of performance..I wouldnt be the least bit shocked if Trent and LaPorsha are winning that one. As I mentioned in my last post, I tend to think LaPorsha being able to garner anywhere from 700,000-2 million views for her performances while Dalton can barely crack 200k says a whole lot about impact and frankly I speak as someone who doesnt care for LaP's style.  And with the itunes recordings being available this week, Trent is the only who cracked the top 100 on itunes. These factors do contribute to fanbase or at least how that he inspired some to spend a little and support him IMO and that hes grabbing peoples attention. MacKenzie was last in itunes rankings FWIW.

But just because a lot of people consider LP and Trent "the most talented" doesn't mean everyone feels that way or that's what everyone likes. Believe it or not, some people prefer MacKenzie's style over La'Porsha's or some prefer Dalton's over Trent's, etc. Just having a great voice does not necessarily mean that person has more "talent" than somebody else. To some people they think MacKenzie is talented because of the way he arranges songs, some people think Dalton is talented because of his performing ability. I don't see why because Trent and LP are the technically best vocalists that automatically translates to "they have the most talent." I don't think people only vote based on voice anyway and they never have. The majority of people who won Idol were not considered the best singers in their seasons. There's always been other qualities that have drawn people to vote, such as likability, personality, image, song choices, performing, connection to a a song, etc.

I think LP is a great singer and a pretty great performer but she does nothing else for me. I wouldn't buy her CD and wouldn't see her in concert. I vote based on who would I be excited to buy a CD from or see in concert and that for me is Dalton, despite the fact he doesn't have the greatest voice. For me there's other things about him that more than make up for that and that's how a lot of his fans see it and why they vote.

LP and Trent strike me as very niche-y artists and ones who probably have older fanbases. LP is R&B and despite only being 22 comes off pretty matronly most of the time. I suspect she has a lot of older fans. Trent is also R&B but definitely a more current sounding R&B. He's the oldest in the competition at 25 and that classic Southern Scotty McCreery/Phillip type gentleman that the older demographic loves. They were also both complete unknowns before auditioning for the show and had significantly less followers than Dalton or Mackenzie before the show.

On the converse we have Dalton who was in a Disney boyband before Idol that gained him quite a lot of recognition and fans before he ever appeared on Idol. He's cute, the youngest in the competition at 20 and therefore attracts a mostly younger fanbase, and is pop/rock, which is a commercially extremely viable genre. Dalton is extremely marketable and commercially appealing. He's pretty much what any pop label looks for.

MacKenzie made something like the top 20 of season 3 of The Voice, so like Dalton he came in with an already established group of fans. He's a singer/songwriter, very popular style right now, also cute and young, commercially appealing in an Ed Sheeran type way. To me they're the more current and commercially viable artists versus LP and Trent and why I could see them having much larger fanbases than them. It makes perfect sense to me why they might possibly have bigger fanbases.

I think the audience is divided, from comments I've seen in various areas, it seems the older audience wants a LP/Trent finale and the younger audience wants Dalton and MacKenzie. I personally love Trent but I've seen many young fans say they want Trent gone. The question is who are the majority of voters: Older demographic or younger demographic? If the older fanbase is dominating in votes, then we most likely will end up with the LP/Trent finale. Personally I want Dalton and Trent. Best vocalist + best performer IMO.

Have there ever been three in the finale? Is this one a three person one? TIA

I think the way they're probably going to do it is similar to last year where they'll have the 3 onstage and reveal who the 2 competing are. I really hated the way they did that last year and how they couldn't shove Jax off the stage fast enough, without even letting her say anything or give her a proper goodbye package, so I hope if they do it like this again that they at least let the eliminated finalist sing one of their songs or at least get to speak or get a goodbye package like they did for Sonika. God. But I doubt it's gonna be a 3 person finale this year.

  20. My take on the episode this week:

    La'Porsha -

Wanted Dead or Alive - I'm over LP and think she should go, but I highly disagreed with Scott's opinion of her singing this and even though she's not really a favorite of mine anymore, I think it's downright disgusting the way he constantly throws her under the bus and shades her in interviews (he did it again this week, mentioning the "cowboy" thing again). I don't see what's so heinous about her singing this song. In the end I don't think it was that great of a performance from her in comparison to others and she flubbed a lyric (which the judges didn't mention?), but over the years we've had plenty of contestants sing songs where the lyrics didn't exactly match them, like Avalon singing Yo Excuse Me Miss? Candice singing When I Was Your Man and not flipping the gender? So what's the difference? As long as she can make you believe what she's singing, that's what really matters and honestly I hate it when people try to gender flip songs. It's always cooler to me to leave the lyrics as written. I seem to recall Nick last year singing Teenage Dream but I can't remember if he changed the lyrics or not.

Elastic Heart - This was just ok for me. I was too distracted by the garbage bag she was wearing to really pay attention to her singing. I feel like this was her weakest week, which for her is still pretty great, she's obviously talented, but I'm over her already. I wouldn't be mad if she won because she'd vocally be very deserving and it would be perfect karma for Scott to get stuck with her, but I'm just disenchanted with her now. I think she should go either next week or in 3rd place. It's kind of ironic how she had probably the best week last week with 2 strong performances and this week she was one of the weakest, I would say the worst next to MacKenzie. I think LP peaked way too early and set the bar too high for herself because now everything she does is going to come off mediocre in comparison to what she's done in the past. At least that's how it is for me. Even if her "mediocre" is still better than some of the other's "best," that's just how it is for me.

    Trent

Sharp Dressed Man - I liked this, I don't know if it was as great as the judges were saying it was though. I really liked the studio recording and bought it on iTunes though and believe his charted the highest. Boy did he look sharp though. I much prefer his suits than his goofy hats and scarves look. He's quite handsome IMO and I think could be a successful Sam Smith type if he won.

Chandelier - I agree with someone else who said they wished he had belted out the chorus. I was missing that from this, but otherwise he did a good job. Again, not sure if I loved it as much as the judges, but he really is such a skilled vocalist. Easily the best of the male singers left (not that that's saying much). I would love him to be in the finale.

    MacKenzie

I Want You To Want Me - I think this was the worst performance of the night. He got drowned out by the band in the middle. It was just ok. There's been very few performances from him that have impressed me and I feel like most of the stuff he does has sounded all exactly the same anyway. When he has the right song, he sounds REALLY good (Roses, Can't Help Falling in Love), but otherwise it always comes off as just "eh."

Titanium - I think this was actually quite good from him, but I wish he had tried for the high note more than only once or twice. When he did it it didn't sound bad at all.

    Dalton

God Only Knows - I think since the lives started this was his best vocal, probably because he wasn't sick this week. This is definitely a closer representation of his voice and what I know he can do than what he's shown in past weeks. I do agree the aimless wandering around on the stage was a little distracting, maybe he should have just sat on a stool or stood behind the mic stand. The sitting on the stairs was cute though. His recording was the only other iTunes recording I bought besides Trent's. I'm glad he finally pulled out a ballad and did something soft and vulnerable for a change.

Bird Set Free - Wow. Just wow. I don't honestly get the hate over this. This is easily the most powerful performance he's ever given. I don't understand at all people saying, not just here but all over the Internet, that he was being fake in this. Not at all! He is one of the most genuine people in this competition (they all are) and one of the most genuine people in general. I really felt this from him and felt like this was the perfect song for him, even more than Sound of Silence was. It was like Sia wrote these words just for him. If you didn't feel that when he broke down at the end.... There were probably no tears because he was trying not to cry, he hates crying and especially hates crying on TV. I think people are giving him way too much credit for "fake" crying, he's not that great of an actor. He deserves an Oscar if he was faking that. You could just tell he felt every word he was singing.

I think anyone who hated this performance, calls it fake or whatever, clearly missed the point of the entire song. Dalton knows he's not the best singer in the competition. He's even acknowledged that himself in interviews. I'm sure he's read the comments he gets about people saying he can't sing or that he's mediocre. I feel like that's all the more reason why he chose this song with these lyrics. "I don't care if I sing off key, I get lost in my melodies, I sing for love, I sing for me." Music is what helps him through his depression and bipolar disorder. He doesn't care that he's not the best singer, he sings because it's like therapy for him, and as a fellow musician I totally understand that from him. Music is his release like it is for myself and many others. This was just the absolute perfect song for him and he delivered it emotionally better than anyone could have. Dalton's not the best singer in the competition, but for me he connects the best to his songs and delivers the lyrics like no one else does, and that counts more to me at the end of the day than who can hit the highest note. I FEEL stuff when Dalton sings, that's why I like him.

I wish people would stop it already saying he only gets by on looks. It's a really sexist comment, for one thing, to assume young girls are only voting for looks. I follow a lot of his fans on Twitter and yes they all love his looks but they love his talent and his heart as a performer much more. He's not just some singer on TV for most of us. I've personally seen stories of people on Twitter saying they too suffer from some kind of mental illness like depression, anxiety, or whatever and that he's helped them get through it. That's inspiring. He's inspiring. He's everything an American Idol should be IMO. Yeah he also just happens to be damn good looking, so what? It's not like people buy CDs to listen to how someone looks, that doesn't even make any sense. If he was hideous looking people would probably comment on what a great, deep, sensitive artist he is. If all he had was looks and nothing else, he would not have made it to the top 4. Even the Tim Urbans and Sanjayas and Lazaros of the Idol world got booted eventually and none of them made Top 5.

At the end of the day, it's about who you connect with, who's music would you buy, who would you see in concert. Most of the people who have won Idol were not the best singers in their season, but there were qualities about them besides that that attracted people to vote for them. I think Phillip was far from being the best singer in his season and I think Jessica or Joshua deserved to win that year, frankly, and while P2 is not my cup of tea generally, there must have been something about him that enticed people to vote, probably for the way he connected to his performances and having a unique style. I thought Nick was pretty meh last year, but again, something about him must have enticed people to vote, probably because he's really likable and nice. Pop music is all about the whole package, not just having 1 quality or another, but having a bit of everything and to me Dalton has everything.

I'd encourage people to check out his acoustic performances on YouTube if they think he can't sing, but I won't even bother because I'm sure no matter what some people won't change their opinion about him. It's a shame that some people don't see what I and others see in him, but oh well. Their loss. For me the best quality about Dalton is his songwriting. He's a phenomenal writer IMO and I've already bought everything I can get my hands on from him in terms of original music. Dalton is someone I would buy a CD from and someone I would see in concert. I can't say the same about La'Porsha, despite the fact she's a better singer. Whatever, I just don't care. It's not just all about having a great voice, if that's all it took there'd be many more famous singers than there are. Sonika is a great example of someone with a great voice but obviously didn't do enough to connect with the audience. I connect with Dalton more artistically and personally, so that's where my votes go.

If the finale came down to La'Porsha and Trent, I guess vocally they are the 2 most deserving. But I would prefer to see Trent win. I don't see LP being commercially successful. As I said, I wouldn't care about buying her record or seeing her in concert. Trent, depending on the material, I would possibly buy his album and possibly see him live, again, depending on what direction he went in. He would have a chance at success IMO if he did Sam Smith/Adele type stuff.

My preference for a finale though is Dalton and Trent and I would be happy with either outcome. Dalton is my #1 pick though. I think he deserves it so much. To see someone who encountered so much pain and darkness in their life emerge victorious with the confetti falling down is just so inspiring to me and exactly what American Idol is all about. And I think depending on how much Scott pushed him promotion-wise and what material he released (hopefully his own original stuff), he could potentially be one of the bigger success stories as well. I know no matter where he places though he's going to go on to do things after Idol and this won't be the last we hear from him.

I think next week either MacKenzie or La'Porsha should go, then whichever of the 2 didn't go goes in 3rd, and we're left with a Dalton/Trent finale. I liked both Mac and LP in the beginning but I'm over them now. I would potentially buy Mac's CD depending on the material (if it was as good as Roses), might not care to see him in concert. I feel like everything he does is the same and he has a very limited style (but when he does that 1 style it's very good). For me Trent is the best vocalist left and Dalton is the best song flipper/entertainer/performer left.

I'm shocked Dalton was in B2 this week. I'm hoping it was producer shenanigans done for drama and not that he was really in B2 because with how many fans he has voting for him, I just don't see how LP or Trent scrounged up enough votes to overtake him. And it scares me. I think MacKenzie's fans will vote really hard this week due to the bussing he got. Dalton's fans are voting extra hard due to him being in B2. Trent had an overall solid night, probably the best of the 4, so he's not going anywhere. La'Porsha went first and had a meh performance and this week wasn't really overall one of her strongest so I hope that means maybe she'll go next week.

    Other:

I won't be able to handle the hometown visits next week. I hope they don't show stupid JLo's face during one of them like they did with poor Alex Preston a few seasons ago. DONT RUIN IT.

Speaking of stupid JLo, how could she forget the mentor's name? I'm not a fan of Springsteen but as soon as I saw the guy I totally recognized him. And even if it was just a temporary brain fart like we all sometimes have, she didn't even act bothered about forgetting, like "Oh I'm so sorry, I just had a brain fart, how could I forget?" Stevie's wife had some choice words for JLo on Twitter (but she deleted most of her tweets).

I liked both mentors. Stevie gave great advice and he made Scott look so stupid for disagreeing with the Bon Jovi song. I also think he gave great advice to Dalton for changing the rock song. I've never been a White Stripes fan and I think 7 Nation Army would have been so predictable for him. I'm glad he chose a soft and vulnerable song for a change because all his performances up to now have been basically emo rock. Good to see him do something different for a change and that I feel is more in his wheelhouse.

I think Sia was a great mentor as well. She made some jerkish comments in the media about my favorite singer so I was prepared to not like her, but she seems really nice and all the contestants have said she's the sweetest person. I loved her and Dalton bonding over their bipolar experience. You could tell how much Dalton's face lit up when he learned that about her and that it made him feel less alone and like someone could understand him. I loved that Sia also pushed the contestants to go outside their comfort zones a bit, like with MacKenzie. The greatest teachers push IMO and it usually brings the best out of them. I personally don't mind the hiding her face thing either. It looks ridiculous and I think achieves the opposite effect she wants by just drawing even more attention, but hey, it's worked for her and I respect her desire to want to do what she loves but retain some semblance of anonymity. She has some severe mental illnesses, besides bipolarity, I think she also suffers with depression and possibly anxiety as well, I can imagine dealing with fame and paparazzi is difficult for perfectly healthy people, let alone if you have mental illnesses like that.

I've never really gotten the fuss over David Cook or his music, to me he's a barely above average singer (I know, rich coming from a Dalton fan lol), but I quite liked his performance. It's not a song I would buy on iTunes but I thought it was the perfect song for that Idol tribute. I liked it more as it built up and the tribute behind him was nice and touching.

Poor Sonika. I wish they could have let her sing her swan song instead of having it just playing over her goodbye package. We could have skipped the stupid Angry Birds commercial and Fungo nonsense to have her sing and give a proper goodbye. She looked nice though.

Wanted to mention because some people were wondering/asking, yes Dalton teaches vocals, bass, and guitar at School of Rock in Texas which is an after school music program for kids and where he studied for several years himself. They also do teach adults but I think Dalton is an instructor for kids. IMO you don't have to be Mariah Carey to teach voice. Teaching voice is based on technique and he learned all the techniques himself when he went there. Everyone is going to have different vocal capabilities and as long as he can effectively teach a young child what to do to make them the best singer they can be, what does it matter that he's just an ok singer himself?

Prediction for B2 next week: MacKenzie and La'Porsha, La'Porsha goes home. I don't know though. There seems to be a trend with whoever is in B2 and gets saved ends up in the B2 again the following week and gets eliminated so I hope that doesn't mean Dalton will go. :( But even if he does, he still made 4th place and we all know that means he's gonna pull a Daughtry, come out later this year with a CD called Rapattoni, and become the most successful selling alum of the year. :D Hmm, maybe I do want him to come in 4th after all. :p

  21. Yeah, if your fan base is on Twitter they're not on musty old Fox shows their mom and grandma watch or wasting time doing something as 2001 as voting for a reality show.

You'd be surprised. I see many teens on Twitter who are voting for Dalton, Mackenzie, and for a time were also voting for Tristan, Olivia, Lee, and Gianna. I see a lot of them say they watch the show with their entire family and they all vote. This number might be small but there's definitely still younger kids watching and voting for this show, from what I've seen. That's why I'm so surprised Dalton ended up in the bottom because I saw lots of people saying they voted literally hundreds of times for him (by using multiple accounts and devices).

  22. If Dalton has the largest Twitter following, it means he won't win.  If you look at the last few seasons, neither Nick, Caleb, Candice, had the largest Twitter followers.  It was Jax, Sam, Angie, none of whom made it into the finals.

It can't just be assumed that the followers Dalton had prior to Idol all are still all active fans who watches show and voting for them.  The ratings have been pretty much on par with last season, so it's not like a lot of new viewers are tuning in.  Twitter is known for Spam accounts, inactive accounts.  Also, fans outside the U.S. are not allowed to vote.

There's one obvious theory as to why Dalton was in the Bottom 2 - his performance has been lacking.

That's why I'm afraid he won't make the finale because it seems even having a large social media following doesn't matter- Jax not making the finale last year, I don't think it mattered much for Christina Grimmie on The Voice either. Personally I don't think his performances lacked last week. Numb was just ok, but Sound of Silence was strong and very emotional. If that didn't score him votes, I don't know what would have. I find it funny that everyone keeps saying how mediocre his voice is, as though that stops anyone from voting for him. He has fans, whether people think he's a great singer or not. It doesn't really matter how he or any of them perform at this point. Everyone has their faves by now and they vote for who they like, regardless of how good or bad they did. I know that even if Dalton tanks I still vote for him and no one else.

I'd be interested in knowing who everyone thinks has the largest fanbase, if it's not Dalton or MacKenzie. I really can't picture Trent or La'Porsha having the largest fanbases, honestly.

  23. I am mostly going by Twitter followers which I know doesn't necessarily mean anything (like Jax from last year not even making the finale) but he does have a built in fanbase because of the boyband he was in before Idol, just like Mac with The Voice. It's kind of just presumed they're the 2 largest fanbases. Trent and LP had significantly less followers coming into the show than Dalt or Mac.

Dalton has 136k followers on Twitter alone. Not every follower votes so lets just say an even 100k people voted for him at a minimum of 50 times each. Trent and LP would have had to have gotten a shit ton of votes to outnumber him. And I know some fans vote even more than that using multiple accounts and devices and some have figured out a way to vote internationally (though not sure if it counts).

The limited voting doesn't even play into it. It's limited for every contestant. 100k people voting 50 times for Dalton is still going to equal more votes than say only 10k voting 50 times for Trent or LP.

My theory might only be an assumption because we obviously have no way of tabulating who really has the largest fanbase but I don't think it's that unrealistic to think Dalton and Mac have the 2 biggest fanbases because they both came in with a lot of followers due to projects they did before Idol, whereas Trent and LP were complete unknowns.

To be honest I don't remember if Ryan said "the" or "our" b2. I think he actually said "your" bottom 2. I'm not sure it matters. Like I said, they can and have put whoever they feel like in the b2 as long as the true lowest is in there and gets eliminated. I'm pretty sure if they didn't it would be fraudulous or something.
