Alexandra's sister Elizabeth who married Nicholas's uncle Serge was thrown into a pit with five other Romanovs and a bunch of hand grenades thrown down the same day as Alexandra and her family were executed. Only one was killed by the grenade. The rest all down there until they died. It's really amazing that Maria and others got away. Elizabeth had left the family to become a nun and living in a convent but she was still murdered.

As you say, Elizabeth wasn't even really a Romanoff, she was just married to one. The Bolsheviks were mad with bloodlust.

    My thoughts:

OMG. As soon as the guy started saying "a photograph before you go" I started hyperventilating. Jesus.

The Bolsheviks'...elimination of the Romanoffs was unbelievably brutal, and savage, and nullified any claim they might have had to be some kind of righteous retribution. Yes, Nicholas was a shitty Emperor who leaned way too heavily into his autocratic legacy. Arguably Alexandra earned murder as well, since she contributed SO much to Nicholas's dreadful, mishandled, ham-handed rule. (There are some valid reasons for this, mainly the stupid, stupid Salic law policy Russia had--post Paul I, son of Catherine the Great, who hated his mother, he effectively doomed the Romanoff family with that legislation--meaning no woman could inherit the throne. Olga would've been a perfectly fine Empress Regnant, but because she wasn't allowed to inherit, poor stupid carrying-the-hemophilia-gene Alexandra and her husband had to keep trying for that boy--and that's what really brought them down. Because since Alexei was born with hemophilia, which no one really knew how to treat, other than, "protect this child as much as possible," Nicky and Alix were very susceptible to all sorts of quacks, of which Rasputin was just the worst example.) But aside from all that, Alexandra was too stupid to know how stupid she was. And she influenced Nicholas's policy to disastrous effect.

That said--absolutely nothing justifies the murder of the five children. Nothing. And subsequent analysis of the first 10-15 years of the Bolshevik's reign shows it was nothing more than a cash grab. They spent years and years and years trying to murder survivors of the old regime, all to get their hands on their money. Make you feel like a man, bayoneting teenage girls? Shooting a hemophiliac child who can't even stand up on his own? Butchering a dog? Dumping their bodies in a pit in the forest after robbing their bodies of jewels? May they rot in hell.

The juxtaposition of the pheasant shooting scene with the murder of the Romanoffs was a little too on the nose....but not entirely out of hand. I detest blood sport.

The whole "Philip is becoming too close to their first cousin once removed" is utterly contrived drama and never happened. Surely the writers of The Crown could conceive of an actual, organic drama to compare/contrast the British monarchy v. the Russian monarchy?

Was the Queen Mum really this awful? She's never been anything but awful in this series.

For a while Morgan has consistently portrayed her as awful.

    My thoughts:

*This was so lovely and sweet, I was practically swooning. I absolutely LOVED seeing so many others just watching Margaret and Peter dance together to Stardust. And Peter, happily on the sidelines, proudly watching Margaret entertain. What a palate cleanser after an episode about the Fayeds (completely uninteresting to me). Just lovely.

*These darn recastings--the first colloquy between Anne and Margaret, I didn't realize that was Anne. It wasn't until she met with Mummy a couple of scenes later that it clicked. I get why it's necessary but it is confusing.

*If you get a chance, google a picture of the woman Peter Townsend eventually married. DEAD ringer for Margaret. (And much younger as well. He sure had a type.)

*UGH, those pictures. Those nasty, disgusting pictures of Sarah at the pool with her paramour. I remember seeing them (I'm embarrassed to admit I bought a tabloid). Ugh. The pictures were bad enough but babies Eugenie and Beatrice were RIGHT THERE. SO unbelievably classless and common. I guess Jolly Hockysticks (a nickname for a Fergie-type--very gungho, high energy and loud--the opposite of Diana) wasn't what it cracked up to be. It took me awhile to quit Fergie.

*Loving this memory montage of Peter and Margaret's romance but I don't remember seeing these scenes in Seasons 1-2?  I wonder if they brought the Season 1-2 Margaret and Peter actors back?

*Lovely scene between Peter and Margaret. They were so sweet together.

*Queen Mum needs to know her place and step back. Peter Morgan sure doesn't like her much--she is consistently portrayed as someone a little too in love with the privilege of monarchy, someone who consistently fails to read the room.

*Casting Timothy Dalton (a former Bond) as Peter Townsend is interesting because the real Townsend was a dead ringer for George Lazenby--another former Bond.

When the Al Fayids were trying to finance the Ritz, I wasn't sure if the hotelier's point was valid or not.  Were they just basically running on credit, or were the hotelier's being racist?

I just felt sorry for Sydney the entire episode.  It was bad enough that the Duke was talking about him like he couldn't hear, but he was dismissed from the party because he was black.  He then only had value to Al Fayid because he was the Duke's valet.  I wasn't sure what to feel about the fact that Al Fayid treated him as a friend and then cried over his deathbed.  I hated that Sydney was wistful about the Duke and then was ok with being the valet to a wannabe Duke.

Yeah, Madame Ritz was doing her due diligence, which is entirely appropriate with such a big and complicated purchase.

It was nice that eventually Fayed regarded Sydney as a friend but that look on Sydney's face when he was asked to leave--I felt such rage.

Judging by the comments, I am definitely in the minority on this, but I was thoroughly bored by this episode. I have absolutely no interest in Dodi Fayed or his family, & don't have any idea why they needed an entire episode devoted to them.

Have absolutely no interest in either of them and I'm surprised they wasted a whole episode on them. It was a well-done episode but I don't care about the Fayeds.

  4. I have never heard a congregation sing as well as that. As lovely as it was, it took me out of the moment a bit. This is something a lot of movies/TV do, make group sing-a-longs unrealistically on pitch. I work birthday parties--trust me, there are a loooooot of tonedeaf people out there.

From the word Go I always thought the “fight” that Kreese broke up was sus. And then when Kreese was stabbed, that’s when I knew for sure it was a ploy to make a jailbreak. Buuuuut, I seriously have to give the stink eye to the prison therapist who apparently didn’t notice her missing badge!??!  Really?  We clearly saw in one episode that she had to use her badge to exit, so after the session where Kreese stole her badge, how did she leave?  Or was she having a prison sleepover?  🙄  🤨

I was totally fooled--bummed that Kreese was dead but then kind of in awe at his Hannibal-esque escape. But dude! You were just about to be vindicated!

It also strains my disbelief that all the CK kids would turn on Silver. They have all drunk a lot of the CK Kool Aid, and a few would find ways to justify Silver's actions.

Having shitty Kyler, of all people, performatively reject Cobra Kai defies belief. Please don't redeem him, show.

It's reprehensible for the show to use "penis-breath" as an epithet directed at a teenage boy, or any male.  Five seasons of it now.   "Penis-breath" is a bullying term which implies that the victim has been engaging in same-sex activity and deserves to be shamed.   It's text-book homophobia.   They may as well call him the F-word.

None of this had occurred to me and it should've. I count myself as a bonafide gay ally. Thanks for pointing this out to me. Yes, it's believable Johnny would've said this unknowingly but someone should've called him on it.

I didn't think Tory's announcement would lead to her and Sam fighting (I know, what was I thinking), but I noticed Tory only blocked and dodged, which I appreciated. I'm glad Sam came to talk to her at the end.

Aw, Bert and Stingray friendship. It's creepy but it's real. Stingray telling his story was a nice moment for the actor. I can understand him not coming forward. I mean, Silver beat him half to death when they were working together, what's he gonna do if he betrays him.

"I shouldn't have just left. I should've taken you all with me." I'm glad Tory didn't respond with "no mercy."

Stingray fears not only Silver's revenge but also serious legal implications. Lying under oath is perjury and a felony.

Yes, ai also loved it that Tory didn't chime in! She's getting more interesting every episode.

I might be harping on it a bit because Kenny just really came to annoy the hell out of me, and I was really disappointed no one just knocked the shit out of his cocky little ass in the end. Really amazing, considering how much I loved the kid when he first showed up and wanted to see him stand up to Anthony.

He was so sweet in the beginning. I'm sure he'll be redeemed in the end but he's appalling right now. Not only attacking Hawk but taunting him afterward. He's in for a bad fall.

Tory made the right choice. They've given her so much depth this season, I love it.

The stuff with Silver is pretty funny though, like your karate empire is so big and important that you are flying in Asian karate masters to take over little strip mall dojos you are buying. And just a side not Topanga karate guy, when you get bought out, if you don't want to get fired make sure you put that in the purchase agreement. Especially when your buyer is a guy who looks so obviously evil.

What on earth does this guy do again?! How does he have so much free time to flit all over the Valley, machinating?

    Agreed, first great episode.

  9. I'm very intrigued at Tory's journey--I can't stand cartoonish psychos and want to see more of her questioning what she's being taught. And I really like her relationship with Kreese.

Cannot STAND cheesy grinning psycho with the stupid ponytail. It's going to be good to see him go down.

Would Diana really be trashing Charles to someone who wasn't a close friend? I would think she would be very formal to the Prime Minister.

That seems like strange writing, unless it's just a plot trick that all the royal family is unloading on the Prime Minister.

That did seem strange, I didn't buy it for a second.

*Nice to see Claire Foy again! It looks like the footage behind her was archival.

*Cousin Norton is the grandson of the guy played by Charles Danse, Philip's uncle and Charles' mentor, the Earl of Mountbatten. So he and Charles are second cousins.

*Ugh, I want to side-eye Diana for involving the boys in her Charles drama (when she thanked Harry) but Charles really started it by putting her down so publicly.** As much as I love Diana, I don't like how she drew them in--as though they were peers and not two children.

**And what is the BFD about shopping? Diana's visit to a store could put that store into the black for the year. She was a huge boost for economies--that's a good thing.

*Fellowes, the guy who answered the phone on the Brittania, is Robert Fellowes, at that time private secretary to the Queen. He is also married to Diana's older sister, Jane.

*Comparing ER to Queen Victoria is very unfair. Victoria withdrew almost completely from the public after Albert died--the criticism was just. The phrase "Queen Victoria Syndrome" just smacks of ageism, as ER was still very active in this period, as the montage shows.

*Charles: And...I hope the same can be said of me...

Oh, however it's done, Aemond has done a terrible thing that he had no business starting given the circumstances. Killing a member of his family - who was under a peace banner, no less - is a grave, grave crime in Westeros. It's a literal war crime. And to be publicly known as a kinslayer is even worse than Jaime was seen in GoT, regarded as the kingslayer. As Jaime said himself, it didn't matter how terrible Aerys was - they still never forgot or forgave or trusted Jaime again. No one else gives a shit that Aemond lost his eye several years ago - if anything, it means no one would believe him if he were to claim it was an accident. No one's going to give him a pass for that. Aemond was arrogant and careless. He's the same spiteful, stupid brat he was that night he tried to take on four angry, grieving kids at once. Anyone could have foreseen that his little game was easily bound to end in Luke's death - Vhagar was terrifying Arrax, and young dragons are erratic. We SAW him learn all those years ago that younger dragons have a harder time listening. Aemond is filled with the same malicious hubris he had all those years ago. He's learned nothing.

When he was a kid, he was a shitty bully. Now he's a Kinslayer who just started a civil war. Congratulations, jackass! You've learned nothing.

Did it make you feel good to menace a young boy and a young dragon with your enormous one? Feel like a man to see the terror on your nephew's face? Oh, except at the end, when you realized you'd just shit the bed?

    What a fucking [c-word].

Here's my take on Baratheon's tantrum about Luke not coming with gifts or offers: if he were truly honorable his oath would be enough. When he took over for his father he presumably was expected to honor the oaths his father took on behalf of House Baratheon. His father stood in Harrenhal and swore allegiance to Rhaenerya as Viserys' heir. If Junior here had no intention of honoring that oath then no one can count on his house to keep their word on anything else. Apparently all anyone has to do is show up and kiss his ass sufficiently and he'll do whatever you want. It's a wonder the house was still standing when Game Of Thrones began.

THIS. If customs and understandings are meaningless, then nothing stands for anything. Civilization stops.

I mean...if the argument is that Luke underestimated what an unhinged psychopath Aemond apparently is...I guess. But it's an actual war crime to harm Luke as an envoy. Aemond has committed a war crime. They did not happen upon each other in a neutral place. No one will ever believe it's an accident, to the point where I still doubt he'll even try to pass it off as one. Luke was sent there as an envoy by his mother who is also his queen. Maybe Luke should have guessed that Aemond is the same spiteful, malicious, short-sighted brat he's been all his life, but he wasn't there for some unimportant reason.

Yep. You cannot simply attack an envoy--the medieval world on which Westeros is based frowned heavily on that. There's a scene in GOT between Danaerys and the envoy from Yunkai--Drogon shrieks threateningly at him after he speaks sharply to Dany and the envoy protests "you swore me safe conduct!"--the scene is referencing a very well-known jus in bello. (Which is why I detest the scene in 300 when they push the Persian envoy into the void. No one would've treated with Sparta after such a huge violation of the customs of war. It's just a cheap bit to make the scene more "shocking.")

Helaena is too good for these asshole Hightowers. In her own little way, I feel she was showing her displeasure with Aegon being crowned when she wouldn't even look at him during his crowning. She just kept her head turned to the side. The things she has endured and the things she has seen in her dreams - she is the only Green I care for.

I absolutely love Helaena. That side head was everything. I was reminded of Vera Caslavska--Czech gymnast in the '68 Games who dominated the gymnastics events (won AA plus so many event medals the judging started fudging the scores to favor the Soviet gymnasts so that Caslavska had to either share the gold or take silver--she protested the results by looking down and away as the Soviet anthem was played--total baller).

I love her predictions, I love her integrity, I love that she clearly despises Aegon and isn't afraid to speak out ("he mostly ignores you"). She is awesome.

I chalk it up to Season 2 Tywin's interactions with Arya at Harrenhall. That whole arc was incredibly endearing--intelligence (Tywin) recognizing, admiring and rewarding like intelligence (Arya). And it puts Tywin's statement to Cersei--"You aren't as smart as you think you are"--into an interesting context. Bet he would've been a better father to someone like Arya. (The main reason he was a shit father to Tyrion--who was also "someone like Arya"--was because Tyrion's mother died giving birth to him, and both Cersei and Tywin blamed him for it.)
