  1. OMG, I had a HUGE crush on Jamie Walters!!!

He was in an otherwise horrible movie called "Shout", and I was so obsessed that I made my local video store save the poster for me. I requested it months before the film hit the store, and was sincerely disappointed when I saw that freakin' John Travolta's face took up most of it. There was just a small still of Walters (with Heather Graham) toward the bottom corner. Glenn Quinn (aka Mark from "Roseanne") was in it, too. R.I.P.

I must have been under a rock, I had no idea Glenn Quinn had died!

  2. I'm pretty sure he wasn't in AP English.  Remember when he was looking over Brandon's reading list and commenting that he'd already read them all (eye-roll)? If Dylan was in AP English, he would have already had that list himself.

I agree that Gil was way too hand-sy with Sue, and that kind of touching just leads to trouble (particularly since Gil said he had a similar problem with a previous student).  Having said that, I'm not really sure how practical (or fair) it would be to demand that a male teacher never be alone with a female student.  How would that even work?  If a female student stayed after class to speak to the male teacher, would he have to order her to leave?  If a female student asked for extra help after school, would he be required to bring a third party in to watch the entire interaction?  It just sounds humiliating for both the student and teacher.  If the teacher was gay or lesbian would he or she not be allowed to be alone with students of the same sex?

I thought Dylan was in AP English?  Did I make that up?

I think it's in an upcoming episode (spoiler alert! ;) ) where he joins the class late. I feel like it is Ohhhhhdrea who helps convince him to get into the class.

Every single time Tara & Sarah follow "The Blaze" with "a lot of parents read it", I laugh. Every. single. time.

  3. In the 1980s, everyone's great-aunt had a couch with the same pattern as Brandon's shirt in the top photo.

Steve, it's called a mock turtleneck because people mock you when you wear it.

The only thing worse than the Electric Slide to End Racism is people still dancing the electric slide at wedding receptions today, at every reception. Just stop it!

Before I even looked at the visual aids, the moment I saw the word "mock turtleneck" my immediate thought was "boner killer" (lady or male!) And then I saw the visual aids and there was confirmation.

Let's talk about the electric slide...through the 90s, (the entire decade) I worked at a banquet hall where every Friday and Saturday night for ten years I witnessed the electric slide being performed at weddings. Torture. Burned in my brain. At weddings where the guests were mostly white, this was The Song that brought everyone out onto the dance floor and was often played right after dinner. It didn't take long for that to be my cue to go outside for a smoke.

And in case you are wondering what the 'end of the night' song usually was...You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC. I'm still trying to figure that one out.

  4. To Tara, Sarah and Dave:

At the risk of being a squeef, I have to thank you guys for putting out this podcast.  It's been a rough few days for me personally and yet this podcast managed to break though and make me smile and laugh. Please never stop, and if you could, make a podcast every day so I have something new to cheer me up as I figure out how to begin navigating life as a newly-to-be-divorced lady. (I think it might be time for me to pick up a "mad bad and dangerous to know" t-shirt, because that will probably be the best way to attract a new man, right? The intrigue alone will make them flock to me...)

Seriously though--this podcast is a ray of sunshine on an otherwise dark day.

  5. In case anyone wondered what original music played in episodes, I came across this today.

It was driving me crazy when I watched Parental Guidance Recommended from season 3, there's a couple of scenes where Brenda was moping about Dylan and a song was playing that was clearly not the original song that played when it aired. I just had to know what the real song was (Losing My Religion).

  6. Well, while she isn't a spokesperson for the KKK, she does say some things about POC that is definitely on the prejudiced/bigoted side. If you have the time, go back and at least watch her final episode...there is a scene I remember with the gang shucking corn on the beach, and she says some things about Black and Koreans, if I recall correctly.

Ah, you know what? I must not have finished that episode because I am playing it again and she's definitely a bigot!

  7. I've been watching season 3 and am almost to the end (just watched the prom/drunk Donna episode tonight!) But I am also keeping up with the AWT podcasts and everyone keeps mentioning Brooke, the racist girlfriend. Now, help me out. I've watched those episodes a couple weeks ago and I don't remember any racist comments from her. I'm watching on Hulu, do you think that stuff got filtered out?

  8. Kelly being all, "And we're stuck here, miserable" is a little rich given she was supposed to be on that trip and she chose, of her own free will, to skip it because she wanted to hang out with her sister.

I was thinking the same thing.

Dear David T. Cole: Those music drops made my day. I laughed at every one of them.

  9. My daughter caught the 8 pm showing, and there was at least one other showing that started an hour earlier.  The theater was staggering out the start times to help with crowd control.  The last showing started at 2 am and then there was a three or four hour delay to get the theater back into shape before they started shows again.  For at least the first three days all the shows are from people who bought advance tickets.

My daughter is actually going back for a second viewing tonight because her employer rented out an entire theater for their employees.  They're having a potluck, costume contest, a Star Wars Trivial Pursuit game, lightsaber wars, etc.  Three hours of fun and games with prizes, food, and buses to take them to the venue.  After the movie they'll go back to the office and there will be a happy hour.  Everyone has to take a breathalyzer test when they leave.  (My daughter is on the Planning Committee.  She works in IT, and they take their Star Wars seriously there.)

How fun! I'm not even a huge star wars fan, but this would be a blast.

FWIW, my kids went to a 7:45 showing of SW last night.

I thought the episode was very sweet. The stuff between Amy and Sheldon was so very intimate that I felt like an intruder at times watching their scenes. Mayim is comedy gold, though. I thought the way the show handled it was really respectful to the characters.

  10. I tuned in for a couple of minutes...it was just so boring. We get it, Kate--you have a lot of kids and it can be crazy.

Free tip for Kate--in the video where you are on the airplane and you aren't wearing any makeup? You looked really good there. You should go with that look. Your interview makeup does you no favors.

  11. All round good show.  Funny moments for all concerned but I especially liked Sheldon and his earworm and his epiphany.  And on another note, I didn't realize just how tall that British guy was!  Jim Parsons towers over the other guys in the cast and he's certainly not short. Well I guess anyone would seem tall by comparison to Leonard and Howard but it was freaky to see Sheldon as the shortest guy in a scene!

I said the same thing to my husband about Stephen Merchant. I did not know he was so tall! I looked him up and the internet says he is 6'7". He nearly hit his head on the door jamb when he was leaving Amy's apartment.

  12. The Amy/Sheldon relationship has gotten interesting this season. Maybe because it has gotten a little more grown up and they are talking like real people. I like the fact that it was Amy who ended up wanting a relationship again and Sheldin turned her down not for any logical reason but just because the breakup had taken too much out of him.

I was kind of shocked when Sheldon said that he was really good at things except for getting over her. That was a mature realization for him and it felt like it was something he realized in the moment (good acting!). It felt real to me. I really enjoyed this episode and the Sheldon/Amy stuff in particular.

  13. I don't recall that Amy was trying to change Sheldon. She wanted some basic adult respect and consideration from him. He has made no attempt to even understand how she felt and it seems like she just let him off the hook for ever having to.

Right. And in relationships, as time goes by, people can manage to evolve and mature. I wouldn't say that Amy wanted Sheldon to change (as a previous poster was saying). She likes him for who he is, but I don't think it's unreasonable for her to expect Sheldon to grow into the relationship a little. Relationships take effort from both individuals.

  14. I read the taping report, and I'm... actually pretty impressed with how they handled it. It was very true to the characters (Sheldon making sure he has consent, both admitting they're nervous & not sure how this is going to go down) and felt very realistic, even just reading it. I like they they're both sort of putting the emphasis on the discovery of it all, not so much on the destination.

And I'm also really surprised Mayim allowed bare shoulders (and an above the knee nightgown!).

Here is a link to the taping report, which full details.

I just read it, and I think it sounds perfect. I can't wait to see the episode!

  15. In S1E8 (Love & War & Snow) there is an instrumental that is played first when Lorelei wakes up because she senses snow and then again when she sees Max while walking through town. My brain is saying this is a real song and not just GG interstitial music. But I have googled and googled and I cannot find what it might be. We even tried using Shazam, to no avail. If it's not a real song, it sounds just like a song that I cannot get out of my head--and unfortunately the one line of lyrics stuck in my head haven't yielded any results either (I'm not even sure if the lyrics are correct).

So I thought I'd ask here if anyone knows if that's an actual song or just GG atmosphere music.
