The twist was that they had to divide the items between the two of them and survive without the items the other had until they met up. So they choose to bring ferro rods, bow and arrow, fishing line, hooks and the like.

Yep, Prof, but last year was the 'not alone' year.  Each participant was provided with a sleeping bag, ferro rod, and a fixed blade knife.   Those items were not one of their (combined) 10 choices.

This year, as in the past years (except season 4), the sleeping bag, ferro, and knife ARE one of the 10 items they have to choose.

They are allowed a specific number of pants, rain gear, boots and the like.

I've been all over trying to find out what they are initially provided with THIS year.   Can't find it anywhere.  Last year History.com had articles with that info.

Last year, this was the list of the items provided not including the 10 items they choose.  Also lists the items they had to choose from for their (combined) 10 items.

    Note:   ~~~~~LAST YEAR~~~~~

This year, not provided with the sleeping bag, ferro rod, or knife.   And we have no idea what choices were available for their 10 items.

What I do know is that they were apparently provided choices for their 10 items, as some folks have chosen sleeping bags rated from -20 or so to -60.   They also have chosen different weight fishing line (and color), different sized hooks, different trapping wire, different sized para cord and different lengths, and the the size of the food rations seems to have diminished from season one on from 4lbs, to 2 1/2lbs, to 2lbs (not counting the flour/salt/whatever choice that I think has always been one pound)

I think there are some items that everyone chooses, like the ferro rod and at least one tarp.

Right.  That's why it's so strange that nobody has chosen a tarp this year.  Was that not an option?  Or were they all provided with one?

C'mon, History channel, give us the lists for THIS year!!!   :)

Has anyone come across a list of the provisions they are given?  Not what they choose but what everyone is supplied with at the start?  I haven't seen that anywhere.

    No, I haven't, and I've looked.

Last year (on History.com) they listed the items they provided to the participants.   They got sleeping bags, ferro rods.......blah blah blah.  Probably because they weren't 'alone'.

This year is quite different, and more like seasons 1-3.   They had to pick 10 items which included the sleeping bags, ferro rods, .........

In the past, the contestants were allowed to take a certain number of clothing items; underwear, socks, coats, boots, a picture of home, fishing waders, etc.  But I've found nothing actually listing *exactly* what they they are allowed to take this year, not counting the 10 items.

If someone finds that, could you let us all know?

I'm still confused about the tarp thing.  I know they all have a little tarp to cover the camera stuff, but 'the TARP' was a popular choice for several years.  Maybe they are all supplied with a large tarp now, or maybe that's not a *thing* anymore??

They might bring back Daniel, then probably Travis too by the season finale. Next season, Madison mid season finale?

I couldn't care less about Daniel.

Travis and Madison are dead.  Like.......DEAD dead.  They're not going to reappear.  :)

Wasn't there another team that tapped before they could reunite?  I'm thinking a father/son team and the son was the hiker and tapped

Oh yes!!  Alex and Logan.  Almost the antithesis of Pete and Sam!

From what I can remember (and that isn't much) the dad (Alex?) thought of himself as a tough guy, but the kid got all freaked out at the end of one of the beginning episodes and tapped out because......bears.  Maybe on day one or day two?

When I was young and my parents were poor, my mom used to make us drop dumplings (she called them noodles) that were just flour and water.

We used to have chicken and dumplings when we were kids (one of my favorites, BTW).   I think dumplings require an egg, though.

When I watch Sam pick only one hunting item (trapping wire) when he must have known he'd be close to a river, I can't help but think that his choice of flour makes as much sense as that.  None.

Hooks and Line, Sam!!!  What were you thinking?  I hope he proves me 100% wrong.

I don't recall anyone being successful with the whole bow and arrow thing previously, but that might change this season.  Nor do I really remember the trapping wire producing anything.   ???  I do remember really adorable scenes with a fox who scampered off after outsmarting the trapping wire.

I'm not sure how gill nets work in a river vs the ocean, but it will be interesting.

I think he is the only person who selected more than one food ration.

Shit.  I am wrong.  Larry took two food rations, also.

So, are tarps not a choice this year?  Or do they get one or two with their provisions?

Did I hear correctly that Sam took no fishing or hunting gear only trapping wire?

Yes, as I posted upthread.  The only hunting item he selected was trapping wire.  What??  No hooks and line?  On a river??   I think he is the only person who selected more than one food ration.

It doesn't look like there will be any scavenged stuff this season.

    Go here: https://www.history.com/playlists/alone-season-5-participant-items

One selected 4 hunting items.  We'll see how that turns out. :)

Perhaps they can scavenge large animal bones and make beads in their spare time.  lol

Happiest to be in Mongolia is Fuckin' Larry.

Predicting that Fuckin' Larry will win it all...his will to win is undeniable...

The only reason I don't agree is that he seems to be 'playing a part'.  ???   The long beard thang?   His explanation of why folks remember him is a mouse and (?) without mentioning the fact that people remember him because of his profanity and humor?  Okay, well I guess he might not know that 'we' know him as Fuckin' Larry (although I doubt it).

I wouldn't mind if he won, but I'm still Team Jesse.

This season is going to be so different.   They have a very short time to gather food and build a substantial shelter before the (extremely cold -30F) winter sets in.  Not just "Oh noes!!!!!!!  It's raining!  I'll lay under my tarps and freak out!!  When I'm hungry enough I'll go home......because.....kids!!  Wife!!  Whatever"

Maybe they'll all be gone by the first day it snows.

I have to admit that what I'm hoping for is someone or two or three really adapting and using the limited time before winter to hunt and gather and build a shelter.  AND being able to be 'alone'.

IMO, the production crew is going to have a heck of a season.  :)

The whole Vulture story, though, makes less and less sense unless we're again going to the same tired well of no other reason than crazy's gonna crazy that both shows have done to death.  Okay, you're scavengers and your schtick is to wait people out instead of outright attack.  It seems a tedious route to go for a few canned beans and old boxes of Band-Aids, but they've got the time now that the world has ended.  Which I guess explains how you decide that rounding up a convey of walkers is a good way to be spending that time.  But you've already got at least enough supplies of food and gas and trucks to comfortably wait them out.  How do you convince other people in large enough numbers to do this that it's also a good use of their time instead of finding someplace safe and also hunkering down?  And assuming you manage to do that, how do you convince yourself or them that it's still a scavenging mission when you set the whole place on fire?  What exactly do you think is going to be left to scavenge?

    This.  ^^  Exactly.

Rather like the wolves and the weird 'wants music vinyl' woman in the program that shall not be mentioned.

Now I'm expecting in the little preview of next week........Madison has been surviving there for ages and somehow blows the back door off the pope mobile in the midst of about 1K walkers.  That would piss me off.  (actually, not really.  I left my expectations at the door a long time ago)

Just in it for the story.  :)   I am enjoying the rejuvenation of FTWD.  I really am, no matter how much I bitch about it.

  9. I just watched it.

    - Mongolia is beautiful

    - I could do without the seemingly prevalent dangerous snakes.  ugh.

The one thing that my ear caught and I could hardly believe was that our funny Sam only chose ONE hunting item.   Trapping wire.  What?  Seriously?  What?   Yes.  Trapping wire.  No hooks and line because one is in a river environment.   No bow and arrow (not that they've ever been helpful before but this is a different environment).  No anything except trapping wire.   Two food rations, though.

Go here to see the items they picked:  https://www.history.com/shows/alone/cast

I am going to assume that several picked the para cord perhaps to make their own gill net?  Or something?  That did not seem to work very well in the past.  I think only the fish lady took a gill net.

Maybe because they realize that their shelters have to be a whole lot better than many of them were before, so the para cord could help.

Can't wait for the season!!!!  :)

So after all that buildup, it looks like whatever happened to Madison happened because Alicia and Nick were too dumb to drive a car away from a bunch of zombies.

    Yes.  ~sigh~

I guess if we wanted logic, we'd be watching.............hmmm.  I really can't think of anything I'm watching right now that is logical.  lol!

The Old Days, pre fall of stadium. And the New Days, post fall of stadium and where Morgan “lives.”

The 'then' and the 'now'.  They're usually delineated by either sepia tones or color, and they switch that shit from episode to episode.   Apparently they think that's cute.  :)

But was there a third timeline tonight.

    Nope.

    10 hours ago, JackONeill said:

For instance, when did the ambulance blow up? When was John shot?

In the 'now'.   Happening now in real time.

    10 hours ago, JackONeill said:

Morgan et al grab John at the beginning of the episode during the firefight, and drive him to the stadium, but they don’t get to the stadium until the end of the episode, which is after the stadium has fallen.

The stadium fell some time ago.  As far as I can tell, a LONG time ago.  Since then, apparently Alicia, Nick, Strand, and Nick's gf have been pissed off about what happened at the stadium, and traveling alone until (beginning of the season) they ran into Morgan, John, and the chick from LOST.   Shortly after the two groups met up, the duplicitous devil child killed Nick.  So he's been dead for at least a day or two (or a week or two).

So the Laura person obviously did something that the stadium group blames her for (death of Madison??), hence Alicia shooting John accidentally while aiming (ha) at Laura/Nicole/Naomi/whateverthefuckhernameis.

    10 hours ago, JackONeill said:

And is Mel dead or not?

Dead.  Alicia killed him during 'now' this episode.

Paola is probably Rh negative (10% of women are). Women that are Rh negative have devastating problems carrying a baby to term unless the man is also Rh negative. Pao already had a miscarriage, which means she's already sensitized. It's not good news.

I think this problem was solved about 60 years ago. :)  Probably even longer than that.

Thar ya go.   My mother was RH-, I was born RH+......and I'm old.  Hasn't been a deal for many years as far as I know.
