The X-Files Revival: The Truth is in Here
baileythedog replied to HalcyonDays's topic in The X-Files [V]
Thanks for posting these links, Margaret. From what I can tell, with few exceptions, the response seems to be overwhelmingly positive, from all facets of viewership. January can't get here soon enough! -
So honest question -- I'm watching this series only because of Aidan. I don't have much of a need in my life for yet another Sherlock Holmes story and don't love procedurals as a general rule....so is there enough of Aidan's character development to make this worth the time investment for me? Also consider that I can't stand Lucy Liu. Does Gregson, as a character, ever get fleshed out enough such that he is a real presence other than just facilitating between Holmes and various crime scenes? Are there any particular episodes that stand out or are strong on Gregson? Thanks in advance!

Spoilers posted (and collected) by various people who went to the screening today. Seems to be nothing but positive feedback. I can't wait! http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/98403043.html -
I'm with you on this. Have been a big Aidan fan since his early days. Man, those eyes and that voice! Due to reasons of life being very busy over past few years, haven't checked out "Elementary" yet but having seen AQ recently, I can vouch for his continued dreaminess. "Avalon" and "Benny & Joon" are my favorite of his roles.

The X-Files Revival: The Truth is in Here

It's conceivable to me that something like the NSA revelations over the past few years could be a catalyst into some serious depressed, paranoid Mulder for a state of years that even Scully couldn't handle. I'm curious to see what their explanation is. There is a poster on the IMDB boards who loved it and is raving about the episode. Side note: DD looks handsome as hell in that interview. -

Does look kind of intense! That scene where Scully takes Mulder's call and he says "I'm here" - looks to me that Scully is sitting in an intensive care hospital room -- perhaps this is the episode with her mother and her mother is very ill and/or dying? -

Something about Reyes--she just never settled into the show, for me. I feel like the actress was always out of tune with the mood of the show. So by the time it got to her whooooing a bunch of whale songs I had given her every chance I was prepared to. Obviously, I realize Reyes was a Chris Carter invention, but it was one particular invention I was hoping he would altogether leave behind. For the most part, I've been very encouraged by the spoilers. This one just leaves me cold. But, like you said, it's only one episode and hopefully her role will be brief at that. And for the record, I wasn't anti the "new agents" on the original run; I actually liked Doggett quite a bit. But Reyes...ugh. I'm already all kinds of excited about episode 4 anyway. Frankly, I'm excited about all of them. I've never been concerned about the quality of the revival--i'm sure it will be good. -

"Whale songs." Yes. Exactly. I can't get THAT out of my head, either. I think prior to that, I had mild dislike, annoyance of her. After Whale songs it went into full fledged disdain. But William....yes, it is a stupid, silly corner the writers painted themselves into. Having said that....it's still sort of a big "thing" between Mulder and Scully. As much as I hated the storyline---or at least how it played out in S8 with all the stupid "who / what's the daddy?", the show is still kind of stuck with it. Not even adopting a kid out really gets rid of him. So in the same way that I don't think they can come back and ignore the previously revealed 2012 date and how that came/went without an invasion, I really don't think they can ignore William either or brush him off with a few words like they did in IWTB. Not that that's the reason for Reyes, it was just a guess. Because of, you know, whale songs. -

Ha. Yeah, ask and ye shall receive, I guess. I can't say I enjoyed Reyes while she was on the show. In fact, I thought AG was a mostly horrible actress to watch. Having said that, here's hoping her role is a small one (I guess it's only in the last episode) and that it doesn't push M&S off to the side like those S8 episodes like Empedcles did. Grrr....I still shudder at those episodes. Maybe her return has something to do with William since she was there when he was born? -

There has been very little additional spoilers leaked recently, or am I just out of touch? Does this mean that CC and company have gotten much better about keeping information on set tight or are spoilers leaked elsewhere and just not making it here? They should be getting very close to completion on principal photography. Sign me, An apparent spoiler whore. -

GA has such a great laugh, although if she goes full bore with it, it might look completely incongruous coming out of Scully. We got a hint of it in "Hollywood, AD." Maybe DD should write one of the episodes! :-) -

Yes, I hope they don't get too angsty in the promos. With a show like X-Files it's pretty easy to hype the awe and wonder to get people to tune in. No need for any Marlon Brando-ish "Sccccuuuuuuuuuuullllly!" type promos. :-) Speaking of which, a career lifetime ago, I had to produce an X-Files promo for work (clients) to promote the IWTB movie. Had a great time doing it. It's here if anyone wants to take a look: (Sorry, it's the crappy de-interlaced version.) https://youtu.be/ZPKN30Tsp68 -

Yeah, I imagine they'll ramp up the promos later to entice the newer fans. Right now it's all about nostalgia and stoking the old fires. And they know they can tease us endlessly and we'll follow. But we're still 5 months out and that's probably too long to keep a new audience interested in these tiny, non-informational glimpses. The newer fans will be snagged closer to the release date. -

Agreed. Fox is re-defining the word "tease" with these. If fans could get blue balls, I've got 'em. -

Seriously? Oh Chris. #facepalm. But even more than that, Matt Weiner made all guest actors sign NDA agreements. They couldn't even tell their spouses what show they'd worked on. No press releases touting any guest actors snagged for various roles. Tighter than the CIA, frankly. And always a delightful surprise when you saw some long ago remembered face popping up in various roles in 60s outfits. So yeah. Chris, take a lesson. It's 2015, FFS. -

Oh, I don't know. I mean, if there's a plausible reason why M&S are not together in the first episode and need to get back to each other after a break, I'm okay with that. It does have to be plausible, though. Certainly there are a million reasons they could drive each other to snap over a length of time, but even more reasons why they could never work out at anything but a superficial level with anyone else. If those spoilers are true, I can deal with it so long as the writing is honest. One thing that amazes me, though, is that after all this time, CC has still not learned to run a leak-proof set. If he really wanted to keep ahold of the surprise, he'd take a few lessons from Matt Weiner of "Mad Men." Nothing, I mean, NOTHING left that set in advance and the series was all the better served for it. -

Not to blame for most of what? He's the show runner so he still has to oversee the writers' room. And I assume no one is being cast against his wishes. -

I haven't been to the Haven in YEARS. Over a decade, at least. I had forgotten that place actually existed, hysterical that it's still a thing. Seems like a lifetime ago. And I recognize that person's name--as I recall a reputable person, yes? Alas, I can deal with 2 of the 6 being myth-arc episodes. Those generally aren't my favorite anyway, and as long as the MOTW's can still reference the larger X-Files universe/questions, then I think we'll be in good shape. I also have faith that 6 episodes is a good mini-season and hopefully, like other shows with limited episodes that have come into prominence since TXF was last on TV, they will take notice of how those writers rooms work and the tightness and cohesiveness of the episodes create a more satisfying serial season. Fingers crossed. -

Well, yes. I'd also like to think that he's learned from "Fight Club." Now, if I hear that casting has taken a drastic turn and someone like Kathy Griffin is being considered, I'll start to be concerned. Then again, I'm someone who really did not hate the second movie, so I may not be objective enough. -

Heh. Weird. Thought for sure I'd read Darin's was episode 4. Oh well, I guess Kumail Nanjiani will get to have all the Darin Morgan fun. Regardless, I still think the Miller/Einstein role is going to be some sort of cracked perspective on Mulder and Scully. (I mean, obviously, from the names, right?) Whether it's Chris writing it or anyone else, it's going to be a study of contrasts or similarities. And I honestly think that will be it. I don't see them trying to shoehorn those characters in as a basis for any spinoff down the road. Obviously, I can be proven wrong, but if there's one thing that I'm certain Chris has learned is that there is about zero interest in an X-Files universe that doesn't include BOTH Mulder and Scully. -

I'm totally stoked about the revival. Came so out of left field as actually happening that I had to pinch myself. Particularly as I spent the spring preparing to mourn the loss of Don Draper, I was so glad that the universe was going to give me some additional, unexpected Fox Mulder in return. I really do like the idea of Miller and Einstein, particularly as I think they could be used in that typical Darin Morgan manner. I love the idea that they could be some sort of fractured mirror look back at how Mulder and Scully used to be when they were young pups. I have no doubt that they're cast and meant to odd dopplegangers that ultimately end up telling us more about M&S. They definitely cast a redheaded female for a reason. I don't know anything about the male actor but Lauren Ambrose was incredible as Claire Fisher in Six Feet Under, amongst other roles. -

So pardon me from jumping in here and sincerely not meaning to harsh anyone's vibes, but who on earth is Pat Munn and why should I care what he thinks about a revival? What makes his opinion valuable to the degree that people are actually reacting to what he's saying and adjusting their expectations accordingly? Just by looking at his twitter feed and the fact that virtually no one of any relevance in the industry follows him, how on earth can this guy matter at all? And how can his skills be at all an offset to the skills that any X-Files fan KNOWS that Morgan/Wong, Darin Morgan, DD and GA have? Not to mention, of all the guest stars names that have been dropped, I can't think of a single one that I'm disappointed in. I guess I really don't understand the fear here.
