  1. From Caterina Scorcese interview posted today. Either she's a great liar, or...I don't even know what to think. Maybe Derek's ghost haunts SGMWGSMH and screws with her head ;)

CS: Their relationship has always been and will always be complicated. They love each other so much. I think Derek is probably the most important person in Amelia’s life, ever, and he was with her during the defining tragedy of her childhood. They went through it together. They both studied neurosurgery. They have so much in common and yet they are of a slightly different temperament. They’ve got this really interesting energy and push and pull because they are so similar and yet there are things about them that are different as well. So yeah I think they are going to continue to have a power struggle. But, like we saw in an episode a few weeks ago, they were arguing with each other about the medicine and then when they got home they were sitting together on the back deck and being such a huge support for one another.

  2. Question- I'm not too familiar with how the media/press sites work. So, they all seemed to be on set the first day of filming 11x21 (Mid March). Do you think they were given the full story then and had to hold on to it until the epsidoe airs? That's a really long time considering how many people from each company must have seen the story. The actual reporter, editors, assistants, probably some higher ups if it's a huge story, etc. If Derek does die, that's. HUGE thing to hold on to. I know they probably had to sign NDAs and such, but seems like something could have leaked really easily.

I don't doubt the reporters have their stories all ready to go for tomorrow night...just curious how it works.

I'm not sure, but they may not have known until very recently if Derek does die. There was a lot more going on in that episode.

Then, there's this - 11x22 filmed at a cemetary, beach (we saw those pics somewhere), and convention center.

  3. I hope it's not Richard. I would much rather Owen and Amelia find another hospital someplace. If it is Richard then my interest in Maggie will be gone so I hope she goes too.

I like Richard, but I think he's more easily expendable. He can get married to Catherine and make guest appearances if he wants.

I've actually grown to like Maggie, which is a real surprise to me, because I didn't care for her at all. I think they've done a great job of integrating her character into the existing cast. I'm not a fan of Jo, but the actress seems nice, and maybe she is the one for Alex, although I'm "meh" about that relationship.

Owen and Amelia can both leave and never come back. Owen seems to have outlived his time on the show, frankly, and I never cared for Amelia.

  4. If there are more exits, I wouldn't be surprised if they wrote Richard and Stephanie (I hope) out as well.

I agree with Richard. I think the production team really likes Stephanie because remember, there are new interns who need older doctors to have sex with ;) Alex/Justin is contracted until next year, and although neither are my favories, I would hope Callie and Arizona get happier stories.

  5. So, Canada does not get the episode tonight? Someone on Tumblr is saying it airs at 6PM EST tomorrow for them, but I don't know if that's Canada or not.

AFAIK, Canada has been back to Thursday nights for some time. It believe it airs 7 p.m. EDT, 6 p.m. ADT on Thursday. Now, I'd like to find an early feed :)

  6. I don't think Shonda is a vile, evil boss - but I believe she can be petty and vindictive to certain cast members, and she's a relentless self promoter, which I find off putting. She also engages fans in a way that's way too odd for someone of her stature. You need a thick skin to be a public figure - I know I could never do it. A good example of how to handle it is seeing of all the ridicule Patrick Dempsey gets when he makes a spelling error, due to dyslexia. He doesn't lay into the fans, he ignores it. Shonda needs to either accept the fact that social media is full of crazies and ignore them, or get off of social media. I agree, there is no excuse for people being rude, threatening her, using racist terms, or anything of the sort. But, welcome to the Internet.

WRT Heigl, Katie handled it all kinds of wrong, but Shonda did, too. Shonda could have taken the high road and she chose not to. TR was publicly humiliated and came out, perhaps with a timing that was not his own. He had so few lines, everyone was wondering what was going on. Then his character is hit and dragged by a bus. God forbid he transfer to a different program. Tim Daly from PP getting canned without even a personal phone call - she calls his agent. I've headed up an office, and I've had to fire people, and discipline people, and there's a proper, respectful way to do it, even if the employee is an ass.

    Talking about tomorrow's episode:

If Derek dies tomorrow, think of how it can happen - alone, with no friends or family members, in a Porsche, from a car accident, talking about not driving fast enough, with that song playing. Dear God, that's just sick. I hope I'm wrong about what's coming, but when you hear hoofs, think horses, not zebras.

  7. Agreed. SR once said that in her original draft of the shooting, Bailey got shot. But she couldn't stand to hurt Bailey, so she changed it. So all the main characters who got shot were men: Derek, Alex, and Owen -- and we didn't get to see aftermath for any of them.

I'm a proud feminist, but I will never understand Shonda's ideas about women and the men in their lives.

It's odd, isn't it? I don't think she gets real, adult, romantic relationships. Patrick and Ellen both thought the relationship (and of course, to Shonda it's THE relationship) between Meredith and Cristina was unhealthy in the context of a marriage. But that's how she rolls.

  8.

To be fair to Shonda (shocking), she rarely says much about Derek. This isn't new and frankly, there isn't an official chatter about it, other than Twitter and forums like this one. I do find it odd as well but considering how she is, I'm not finding this that surprising.

Shonda spoiled a death before the plane crash at the end of season 8: http://www.tvfanatic.com/2012/04/greys-anatomy-spoiler-major-death-to-come/

She also says she could not kill some characters, and my belief is that those characters are/were Meredith, Cristina, and Bailey.

  9. AND I'm grasping at straws again. I know, I know.

The sides have the hospital (not GSM) looking for the neurosurgeon who is at a family function. Derek has promised Meredith that he would be back, and in the promo, promises the little girl he doesn't let people die. What if Derek steps in for the missing neurosurgeon, does the surgery, and in the meantime his SUV is stolen (there's another accident with an SUV, head-on collision) and that guy with Derek's phone and ID is the brain dead guy in the sides...and Meredith goes to identify the body and it's not Derek?

  10. Well, when you hear hoof beats, think horses.

All of my theorizing and hopes are I think me trying to come up with plausible ways to keep him on the show, and right now, I think he's leaving. There are too many signs. All of the wonderful dialog between Meredith and Derek that we've wanted to hear forever in one or two episodes, the ferryboat pictures, the time jump which will serve to put some distance between Meredith and his death so we don't watch her actively grieving. Patrick saying in November that he was leaving soon, that he would take time off between Grey's and another acting job to race and travel, and of course the sides.

    I've given up hope.

And you're right, if he's filmed his last, he's under no contractual obligation to appear on any show on behalf of Grey's.

It's possible that Shonda/ABC decided to pull the plug, too. We will probably never know.

  11. I'm a bit fuzzy but didn't Holden's wife walk away from him then and later Holden died? I don't find that route any less depressing than just killing him off. Dragging it out would be worse wouldn't it

You're right. My assumption is that it's a call back to that, but that it turns out happier.

  12. More useless speculation. The sides for the episode have someone with minimal brain activity, not dead. I wonder if we're getting a repeat of season 2's "Thanks for the Memories" with Holden McKee, the patient who wakes up after years:

Derek waking up months later, maybe after Amelia does surgery, and Meredith walks in, pregnant, just like Holden's wife did.

  13. They clearly still are. Otherwise they wouldn't have used their (ridiculous IMO) hashtag campaign related to Derek and has everyone (even non Derek/PD fans) speculating about his fate. For better or worse, PD still brings some star power to the show and McDreamy is still somewhat relevant to the show (despite his only 30 second appearances) and in general. ABC and/or Shondaland may not be all that content with that but they acknowledge it and still go with it.

Since they've gotten rid of other actors for budgetary reasons (Eric for one), my belief is that ABC is willing to put up with it until PD asks for a release for x or y reason and ABC decides to give it. For now, I doubt that ABC isn't getting their return here.

Not the site, but I do remember only Scandal was tagged in that article. Maybe it was a decoy or maybe it was really lazy by whoever wrote the blind item. Or perhaps it was all wrong.

Oh hell no. After all this speculation and making me use my brain for GA again, someone  must die now. I vote for Stephanie or Owen. Please.

Agreed. Especially with the friendship they seemed to have developed during the years.

Can we have a Stephanie/Own/Amelia trifecta?

Honestly, for fans' sake, I really don't want anyone to die. I think that's the cheap way to go out. I know Grey Sloan Memorial Seattle Grace Mercy Death has buses, shooters, planes, etc. falling onto characters, but I think it's so much more satisfying to have characters leave more naturally. I remember reading that Shonda killed Mark because he would never have walked away from Callie and Sofia, and I get it, but he could have opened a practice somewhere close, and perhaps we'd be happy in the knowledge that he was seeing his daughter.

BTW, have we seen Sofia at all this season?

  14. As a MerDer shipper, this episode was a great delight, and also a little disconcerting. I absolutely loved their pillow talk. After 10 years and 11 seasons, these two are still magic. It's incredible. This is why I hope it continues. I've written my theories somewhere around here, and that's my happy place until otherwise.

Something absolutely unbelievable has happened: I no longer despise Callie. I never would have thought it possible. I don't know if the writers have toned her down, if the actress is making better choices, or what, but she's pretty okay. I'm not a huge fan, and I won't be watching Callie on YouTube, but this is progress. And having really disliked Maggie's entrance as a character, I think she now fits in very well and I am enjoying her, too.

I adored Alex following Arizona around with such concern and guilt. Poor guy. He's grown into such a great man. I'm still don't give a whit about him and Jo, mostly because I find her bleh. But he's always in my top four all-time favorites.

Let me save all my leftover venom for Amelia and her side-kick, Owen. Good lord, can they make her more unlikeable? I cannot take her seriously as a department head, because she lacks the gravitas. She appears to be a psychological mess. Why would anyone, man or woman, be attracted to this kind of woman? I haven't seen an ounce of kindness or pleasantness in her for weeks. Please, go back to California.

  15. What if it's as simple as Derek deciding to take a job at the hospital where the car crash victims get treated? There is that side mentioning how their neuro doc is 30 minutes away at a family function, so maybe Derek steps in after being a hero on the field and decides that this hospital could use him more than Grey Sloan and all of it's best-in-their-field doctors.

Then throughout the remainder of the series we can just see him randomly at home from time to time, or Meredith will mention how he's doing or that he's coaching Zola's soccer team or whatever.

lol This may be a stretch.

I've just been wondering if there will be a misdirect and another character will end up seriously injured or dying. Maybe not in episode 21, but by the end of the season.

This is my hope. Thinking about no Derek is seriously depressing. Which is a sad statement on my life.

  16. An extra posted a picture of the inside of the hospital

    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CClnH68XIAIau4e.jpg:large

It makes me think at a mental hospital : soft lighting, no medical supply in the hallway, the color of the scrubs

I think Meredith has a mental breakdown after the death of Derek

I think you're on to something, but I don't think Derek really dies. My updated theory:

I wonder if Meredith initially thinks he is dead and has a psychotic break or tries to commit suicide - I go for psychotic break, with her PTSD. Then, his "death" could be in her head, and Derek "shows up" episode 23 when we find out either that he was injured and unable to get to her, or she imagined his death.

really don't think he's really dead. Read this from Camilla Luddington: "This season is so crazy, I don’t even want to tease anything because I don’t want fans to even try to get ideas of what’s going to happen. But this season is blowing my mind. And everyone will understand by the end of it."

  17. Speaking of crazy speculation: Remember when Grey's would use the season premiere of an episode to map out the stories of the season? In the premiere, there's the hiker who thinks his family is still out in the desert, and whose family thinks he is dead. Could this be where they're heading with Derek/Meredith? Am I delusional (don't answer that...)

ETA: I'm bouncing this off of you all to see if I'm delusional. I know many of you here don't doubt it.

Think of all the focus on cell phones. There's been a lot of focus on Derek's phone. Of course the phone with Renee. The morning of last episode, Meredith found it in the pocket of his coat. That same morning Amelia left her phone with Owen, Also, at the airport episodes ago, Derek on the phone, "Meredith, I'm losing you...."

So: Derek is at accident scene, puts his coat with his ID & phone on a man, explosion happens, man is unrecognizable and has Derek's ID, they think it's Derek and Derek "dies" - remember premiere, the hiker who thought his family needed him and his family thought he was dead.

I wonder if Derek has amnesia (oh dear God please no) or Derek is a John Doe, injured somewhere. Remember the hiker thought it was days since he'd seen his family, but was months.

I have to rewatch the premiere.

  18. The change in his Reduced number of episodes still might have been due to the divorce rather than racing. He wasn't racing during the time that he was off. I imagine he needed some personal emotional space, and time to settle things with regard to his living situation and his children.

  19. What struck me most about this episode, following right after the repeat of the pilot, is the difference between Derek and Amelia.  In the pilot, Derek is upfront about how having sex with Meredith contributed to giving her the surgery over Cristina, and he has zero regrets about it, while in this episode, Amelia is upset because she thinks that Owen favoring her because they're sleeping together rather than making decisions based on the merits of the case. I know which attitude I respect, and it's not Derek's.

You may have missed the next line when Derek said he was kidding about giving the surgery to her because they slept together, and that Meredith followed the case from the beginning and earned the right to be in the surgery. So, there were no regrets to be had.

    • Love 1
  20. I've changed my mind.  Shonda writing the episode + Patrick confirming he's done filming = Derek dies. If he doesn't die in 21 then he'll go in the finale. Isn't there a time jump in an episode? It could be to move Meredith ahead after he dies or something like with Mark where they waited to take him off support.

I think the ratings would be fine. People who aren't diehard MerDer shippers would still watch and wouldn't people who were fans of Meredith & Derek all this time continue to watch to see the aftermath with Meredith?  I shipped Alex and Izzie but didn't stop watching the show when Izzie left because I still cared about Alex.

Diehard MerDer shipper here: I will not watch if he's gone. I have no desire to see Meredith grieving, nor do I have any desire to watch her move on with someone else. Ten years/eleven seasons of a constant relationship tossed away in a few episodes? No thanks.
