  1. She's killed of a black man and gay man (not sure that should count as a minority) on Scandal.  Also, the implication is kind of gross and pretty inflammatory to just throw out there, in my opinion.

    1) I am talking about Grey's Anatomy, I never watched Scandal. 2) Fact, not implication. IMO.

  2. I should probably clarify what I meant. I meant Shonda wanted a shocking death and if you leave Meredith out of it cus shes the lead. The only two shocking deaths would be Derek and Bailey IMO. I think the benefit of killing Derek off is that it gives Meredith more of a story than it would if they killed Bailey off.

Also, and I don't know if this means anything or not, she's never killed off (in a violent way) a minority character on Grey's. All the horrifying deaths of the main or high profile guest casts haven't been minorities: George, Reed, Charles, Heather, Mark, Lexie, Derek.

  3. I was just looking up some the personal troubles people have been mentioning about Patrick it looks like he has gone through a lot in the last couple of years who knows if he was difficult to be around or how he was behind the scenes. Obviously, he is not going to say in his own interview that he was difficult to be around. The longer he has been on Grey's the more honest/conferable he was in speaking out in the press. Who knows maybe ABC gave him one last warning and he went and ran his mouth off in November.

I'll agree with that and that is a fair point.

In taking all those personal troubles into account, I can't imagine how horrible he had to be - maybe he was, maybe he wasn't - to warrant firing him instead of working with him and having some compassion for a man who lost his mother after years of her battling cancer, lost his wife of 15 years, and the family life he'd come to  know.

  4. I hope he realizes that he only has all of these racing opportunities because of Grey's. I'm sure he does, some of his fans sound like they don't.

He only mentions it in about every interview. Of course, I'm sure that will change now. His fans probably know a lot more about him than the people that don't follow him, or don't care for him. We know his sponsors, his history, and the depth of his spoken gratitude.

ETA: We also know that his racing schedule does not keep him away from home for months, or even weeks, at a time.

  5. Yes and he was shoved into a wall for it IIRC. And yet the "no asshole policy" allowed IW to return. Go figure.

And he was on the phone with a network executive at the time.

Yeah there are crazy people on Twitter but its not everyone. I think the whole its not real and don't tweet me yr crazy is horrible. Yeah its a TV show but these people come into your home 1 a week for 11 years. We deserve some kind of place to vent. And I am sort I know she wanted the shock but come on they killed Dr green off but we had a whole season to get ready for it to say goodbye. I would have liked that andi bet a lot of us would have liked that and maybe people would not be going ape right now

    I don't think people get it. I really don't.

Derek Shepherd deserved better. We all know he was a fictional character, and that Shonda Rhimes always had the last say, but the way this was done on her part was filled with anger, cruelty, and vindictiveness. To have the leading man of your lead actress killed in such a way – and let’s not pretend that any of this was not purposeful – was not only sophomoric and nasty, but dismissive to the years Patrick Dempsey spent as probably the main ambassador of this show. I barely watched this episode once, but a few of the things that stood out to me were the injured mother saying the driver of the car that hit them was “a middle-aged man with a mid-life crisis,” that Derek said, “What, I’m not driving fast enough for you?” In addition, there were a few seconds of screen time given to the “Porsche Cayenne” logo on the back of Derek’s car, and I believe there was also a line about doing "what I'm always doing” insinuating it was in a car. So to my way of seeing it, Shonda Rhimes threw a heaping pile of steaming shit onto Patrick Dempsey and had him mortally injured in a Porsche. Who is this unhinged? Did Patrick kill all the puppies and kittens in the world?

For a moment, let’s imagine he DID kill all the cute puppies and kittens, that he was so horrible that people rejoiced when he left. Let’s imagine that he was the worst actor in the history of the show and that Shonda had had it up to HERE with him. Who are we leaving out in Shonda’s lesson in “I’ll show you who’s the boss!”

    The fans.

Eleven seasons of loyal viewing. Ten years of appointment television. Grey’s Anatomy was my reward, the present I’d open every Thursday, my ice cream cone to myself for getting through a tough work week. How was I, how were we, those of us who bought DVDs, who retweeted support, who bought magazines and watched through the ups and downs of the ridiculousness of their relationship, through sex and mockery, though Rose, through a post-it while another couple got the gorgeous wedding? What present did Shonda give us after all that time? Well, the same that she covered Patrick in: A heaping pile of steaming shit, which is how I describe the idiocy that I saw last Thursday.

First he was a diva. Then he was late to the set. THEN he didn't know his lines. They haven't gone the route of puppies and kittens yet, but I'm sure something else from a "source on the set" will be forthcoming. I think they knew there would be a backlash, but didn't know the intensity of it from fans and tv press alike.

Never, ever again will I watch any show that Shonda Rhimes has any part of. There were a million ways she could have given fans and Meredith a happy ending, or give Derek a happy ending, and I thought of so many possibilities and I’m not even a professional writer. When you have “problems” with four actors on your show – Isaiah Washington, Katherine Heigl, T.R. Knight, and Patrick Dempsey – you have to wonder who exactly has the diva problem. As a viewer, I know what I’ve always known, that her world view is warped and that she doesn’t care a whit about her fans.

  6. so you think in a few days/weeks this mess will blow out and the show will go on with the same numbers in September? May be, it's a possibility. Honestly I won't watch anymore because enough is enough, this show has became inconsistent -death after death, new useless character after new useless character, discontinuity, dropped and/or recycled storylines. all i cared about was the originals; and: bailey has become someone else, richard never had a storyline on its own since he's a man; derek is dead, alex is meredith's psych/nanny and meredith is going to be a tragic character again. if people can take this, then i suppose this show can go on forever.

i was hoping all this mess could shake shonda's arrogance, but i guess i was wrong.

I don't think it'll blow over. I think people who have been  loyal since day one are at the point now where they're absolutely done. Why would I watch? To see Meredith grieve? Be even greater? move on? No, I'm done. There's no reason to give Shonda the investment of my time and my loyalty when she did what she did.

  7. But what makes you think they didn't see this coming?  Also, I think the ONLY reason PD still has Merder supporters is because he made out like it was not his fault at all.  They are all thinking poor Patrick, he got fired by Shonda RULER OF ALL THAT IS EVIL and then literally hit by a truck (just as George got run over by a bus).  If this had come out differently, as in Patrick broke his contract because he wants to race full time.  Then, i'm pretty sure all that support goes away.

I still feel like this sort of falls under "there is no such thing as bad publicity". yes, Shonda is getting a ton of crap now...but in reality its all just publicity for the show.  Almost every entertainment news outlet picked up Ellen's tweet, which basically said nothing at all.

Wow. As a MerDer supporter, I disagree.

No matter what happened, Shonda decided to do the nasty, vile things she did in that episode. Ten years of my loyalty, and she gave it to me and other fans up the ass.

You're damned right I side with Patrick.

  8. Good lord, a "reporter" wrote this:

it's unfortunate that the reporter didn't follow him home, because "After this quiet day, where he was alone and drove off in the rain, it was only out of the corner of his eye that he first glimpsed something.  He slowed his car, turned his head, and there it was...a beautiful rainbow breaking through the rain.  It was almost as if it were a sign.  And then his phone rang (no, not THAT phone), and his agent called with an offer for a new project.  He looked back at that rainbow again and smiled. He knew.  Even though he was alone, he knew.  I'm going to be okay."

I assume that's the "let's have all the feels" the reporter was looking for.

Someone who is a Patrick Dempsey fan would know that he loves the rain, and I'm certain he talked about it raining when he left. Someone who isn't - eh.

  9. the Ellen thing was weird even though it made me laugh. I thought it was odd cus of how glowingly Patrick spoke of her in his EW article.

So far, Patrick is the only one coming out of this not looking like an asshole. Maybe he is an asshole, but he's handling this with grace and kindness. His "thank you" to the fans is thoughtful, too.

  10. I think Ellen posted that video because she knew a twitter shitstorm was coming.  And she was right.

    And that's appropriate because...?

I think if Shonda killed ANY regulars she was going to be criticized. I remember reading articles right after Sandra Oh announced she was leaving of people coming up with ways Shonda would kill Cristina. I've honestly always thought the reason she didn't kill Cristina was to prove to everyone she could write a regular off without killing them.

    No, I don't think that's why she wasn't killed.

  11. I looked at a few of the cast member's mentions after the show aired and I wasn't at all shocked. It was as I expected, rage at people that had nothing to do with whether Patrick left the show or not or how his exit was handled. The main basis for the hatred was that the actors were not publicly making statements some fans felt were owed. I was not surprised since the MD fanbase has often come across as narcissistic (not everyone of course, but often enough on twitter, comments, message boards) believing they were the only fans who mattered to the show, etc. What I did not expect was the almost immediate way they turned on Ellen. I fully expected support for her and instead she received the same treatment as the others. I find it awful that (supposed) adults would behave this way. Being upset about a show in no way justifies being rude and hateful towards a person for simply not speaking/publishing the words you believe they should. I suppose its just an example of the bad side of the anonymity of the internet.

Well, the fact that the cast joyfully tweeted "where is Derek?" and Ellen posting that video like she was celebrating something was awful. People who act like that attract criticism.

I think no matter how bad it got, they all shot themselves and the show in the foot by this reaction. Shonda is being harshly criticized by this character death and the WAY she did it, and not just by fans.

  12. I only watched the episode once, and I'm not sure I have the stomach to watch it again, but there were way too many jabs in Derek's dialog that point me toward thinking Shonda is a vindictive, nasty person - everything from someone thinking the driver was a "middle-aged man with a mid-life crisis" to Derek saying, "...I'm not driving fast enough for you" to something the song lyrics, the FOCUS on the Porsche name on his trunk, and I'm sure there are about a million more (maybe one about spending too much time in the car).

I'm bitter and angry and I'll get over it, but I think Shonda, in her attempt to punish and castigate Patrick, gave a big "Fuck You" to loyal fans. I wonder if she thought the reaction would somehow be different than it's been. Patrick was nice enough to send a tweet to fans. Count me as unimpressed by his co-workers' silence. Ellen posting funny tweets moments before the episode was to air was disrespectful, if not to him, then to his fans.

  13. Its possible especially if there is any ongoing legal/financial contract disputes still being settled. And, even if not ordered to they may choose to if a situation like that is going on. I doubt everything is being made public.

She's probably not reading them. Can't blame her.

ETA: if (and I don't doubt it) the blind item is true that really should explain why the cast isn't speaking up but YMMV.

What storylines did he leak, if he's the object of the blind item?

Maybe Patrick was a miserable bastard, but the FANS who butter her bread, those of us who were there from the beginning, deserved much more.

  14. so much to say, hope I can articulate it all.  First, that was a crappy episode.  It didn't even feel written by Shonda...i know she can do better.  I agree with many of you above, so much shade thrown at PD.  They tried real hard to seem like Derek was taken to some incompetent hospital which sucked.  Also to echo many of you....why would't Meredith have called Amelia?  Makes no sense.  Although I guess they were trying to show us Meredith being a competent doctor knowing there was nothing anyone could do.  Shonda really loves her "irony" with the latest tragedy being world renowned neurosurgeon dying from a brain bleed.

Damn, Ellen Pompeo really killed those finally scenes....she is great at acting "cold" and definitely over looked when it comes to accolades.

However, as bad as the episode was...Shonda and her minions got what they want.  This thread has more action since coming to PTV and its only 2 hrs after the east coast airing.  I am sure the ratings will be up significantly and all those people who claim "won't watch anymore" will be back next week.

I can't even begin to make sense of this timeline.  But for those of you in promo thread...did anyone notice the time on Derek's car said 7:45p before and after the accident.  opps.

I think you may be underestimating fans' anger over this. First of all, from the EW article, Patrick did not want to leave. Without saying it, he sounded like he was very surprised. Secondly, no need to tune in. Anything I want to see I'll find on Youtube, and there really isn't anything left for me to see. Meredith mourning? No thanks. Moving on? No thanks. Her children asking where their father is? Really, really entertaining.

  15. I believe the only reason I'm not a sobbing mess is that I know it all happened because of Shonda's fuckery. It's that stupid.

I'm sad he's gone, but glad to have this show out of my life. I wish Patrick all the best, and hope he finds happiness, and gets a great cable show to highlight his ability.

Interesting that in his EW interview, he remained as classy ever. Shonda, take note.

  16. You can't tell me that there wasn't some shade being thrown at Dempsey when the basic action that started this whole debacle is a car speeding down the road like a race car.

It was a disgusting move. I'm sad he's gone, and he's gonna miss a paycheck, but if that's what your boss thinks of you, he's better off gone from the poison.

  17. Unfortunately, the childish fans are tweeting to all writers, producers & actors who have been promoting the show with the hashtags these past weeks, including Ellen.  Its sad that adults cannot comprehend that actors have jobs and promotion is part of it. None of the actors (or most of the crew) had anything to do with Patrick leaving. The spewing really speaks volumes about parts of the fanbase.

I wouldn't expect a non-Derek fan to understand, but I don't blame the fans, me included. They have a job to do, but frankly, they're pissing on something I've enjoyed and supported for ten years like it's a joyful day. Pardon me for not giving a shit what anyone thinks about me or other fans right now.

  18. She had the utter gall to not be what the men in charge at ABC considered feminine and sexy. How dare she?

I wonder. I remember an interview once with Julianna Margulies, a long time ago, maybe post-ER days, where she talked about hearing the men in charge discuss whether or not an actress was "fuckable." I also remember Patrick pulling out a statement to read he was given from ABC about Brooke's departure, and in reading it, everyone knew it was the company line.

  19. This is fast becoming my favorite thread!

I would hope any backlash wouldn't affect any of the actors. Shonda will take a hit, Patrick may as well.

And then, it could be that it's all one big fake out. I am not holding my breath, and I'm not sure there's enough creativity for this to be so, but I'd be weirdly happy and sad all at once. I really need to disconnect from this show. If he lives, I may try to take a vacation from everything Grey's until September.
