  1. According to a recently released interview with Mike Schur, he wanted to dispel any ambiguity and outright stated that in this episode, they are really back on Earth and alive. It's not a simulation. I will be re-watching with this in mind.

  2. I'm posting this through squinted eyes because I have only seen season 1, but I cannot get over how jarring it is that they use the same footage of waves for so many scene breaks. One in particular actually made me laugh; I cannot recall the scene at the moment, but it cut from the scene to a shot of the waves and then picked right back up again at the previous scene!

I really enjoyed the first season overall. I enjoyed watching David Tennant in a role that was not a villain - I've only seen him in Jessica Jones and Harry Potter (starting Dr. Who just seems overwhelming).

Were they pre-approved questions? Maybe, he was limited. Honestly, the nerve of her and others like Moss....it really annoys me. They are living their cushy lives, while children and some adults suffer from COS.  I get how they may just be too scared to break away, but, they don't have to verbally defend it.  But, Leah did that at one time.  She feels horrible about it now, but, she gets what those others are going through.  They may really believe the lies, but, IMO, enough has been made public now, that the lies are clear.

He was patting himself of the back for "asking tough questions", so I'm not sure exactly how the interview was planned or perceived by Dax or by Erika. He would also say "well there are rumours of mistreatment, but look at the Catholic church - they're no better!". It really seemed like an insincere attempt to seem tough on the CO$ when really, he was accommodating and placating his friend.

I wasn't very familiar with this actor being a member of the COS.  It's unfortunate.  She was raised in it, but, she should be informed by now.  Based on her defense of the indefensible, I now find her irrelevant.

I listened to the podcast (Armchair Expert with Dax Sheppard) and was pretty disappointed with the questions she was asked. He lobbed her a lot of softballs and didn't ask enough follow-up questions.

In The Dark is back.  They've released two episodes about their new case, about a man whose conviction gives new meaning to the term "railroaded."  I loved the first season, but I'm having to psych myself up to listen to this season, because I don't know if I can handle such heavy subject matter.

Their first season was about on par with Serial S1, so I'm going to screw up my courage and dive in.

I couldn't listen to the first season because I have two little boys and can't listen to crime podcasts about children. I'm enjoying the second season so far, though!

I recently discovered Crime Junkie...most cases discussed are from the Indiana area (I'm not American, so I'm not familiar with that area at all).

I finished I'll Be Gone in the Dark yesterday and enjoyed it.  It did break my heart a bit every time there was a section that started with a comment about it being compiled from Michelle's notes/ old articles/ etc.

I hope the book generates the right interest in the case to finally get it solved.

There will be a press conference at noon today (PST) announcing something related to the EARONS case; gossip online is that a former police officer has been arrested, with 100% DNA match!

Same, people kept saying HIMYM was the best replacement for Friends, but I think the whiteness of the Friends era didn't sustain through the aughts. So New Girl takes the throne from Friends.

Have you seen Happy Endings? It's on Hulu and is a really great accompaniment to New Girl. Plenty of shared actors too.

I have seen Happy Endings once, all the way through, back when it was on Canadian Netflix. Unfortunately I don't think I can get Hulu here. I'd love to watch it again. While I did enjoy it (it is HILARIOUS), it didn't also give me the warm fuzzies I get from New Girl.

  8. Sorry to double-post but my last post was over a month ago, so I think it's safe...

This show has taken the place of Friends as my go-to feel good show to watch while cooking dinner and doing household chores. I'm on my third viewing now. It is such a comfy, cozy show.

Well I guess the fact that I still love this show and I still love Jess is an unpopular opinion! To me the show is still funny and quirky and sweet. Every season had it's ups and downs, but it's remained pretty consistently entertaining. Reagan was a great character and I really liked her, but her time has passed and now we get to have Nick and Jess together again and I love it.

I only started watching the show about a month ago - I marathoned it on Netflix. Usually, when I end a marathon I get a little sad but move on, but with New Girl, I just started back at the beginning and am on season 4 again! While there are definitely weaker moments later on, I also find it consistently entertaining.

  10. This was the first episode of The Good Place that I didn't love. I thought the idea of sending them back to their lives would be intriguing but I spent the whole second half wondering if/when we would get to see Tahani, Jason and Chidi. I also found Eleanor's immediate personality change after her near death experience to be a little heavy-handed. I also don't buy drunk Eleanor remembering the exact phrase some random bartender (to her, at least) said to her, and then it meaning enouhg to her that she Googled it. THEN she flew across the world to meet Chidi, a man she should have no real connection to? Are we supposed to think that, even though they reset her life, she is maintaining some of the character development she experienced while in the "Good Place"? Do humans improve with each reset, like Janets do?

  11. I just marathoned the whole series on Netflix, and while I know that they're coming back for an abbreviated 7th season, this did feel like a great way to end the series. Schmitt and Cece's relationship in the last season or two walks a reeeeally fine line between romantic and saccharine. It almost feels like someone is writing their own wish-fulfillment. Nobody is that over the top romantic (OR maybe I'm just being ripped off :P).

I am curious how anyone could actually think that all those dead mobsters would be some kind  of murder-suicide thing. With all those bullet casings unless the suicide guy was captain america and was able to dodge 100's of bullets how did he manage to kill all those other guys before killing himself? And how did Karen, who i thought was supposed to be a decent reporter, think it was a reliable enough story to report on it?

He also had a suspicious injury to his arm at the very least, did he not? When Frank grabbed his hand and turned the gun on him, I swear it snapped...

In flashbacks and alternative version episodes, why does Fat!Monica have a completely different personality and even different voice? Did the fatsuit constrict Courtney Cox’s voicebox to make it several octaves higher?

Are we supposed to believe that Monica could only be a self-assured woman by losing weight? Or that the basis of maturity is dependent on her virginity? I hate that portrayal every single time. It’s not cute, it’s insulting and ridiculous.

I cringe through Fat!Monica episodes. I love Friends but there are a lot of '90s/'00s issues that are just not ok any more (i.e. the fat jokes, the gay panic, the lack of characters of colour, etc.).

  14. I love Bob so much that I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop; I thought maybe he's there to get information on Will to report back to doctor or something, but he just seemed so sincere and willing to help (and put himself in danger) that I'm over my paranoia.

Anyone listed to Heaven's Gate yet? I loved the first ep.

I don't know much at all about Heaven's Gate and I was about 12 when they were in the news...

    Spoiler

it's fascinating that the host may have a personal connection to some members of the group.

I'm also enjoying True Crime Obsessed much more than I thought I might. I don't like humor in my crime podcasts because it often comes off as a flippant disregard for the victims. The hosts of TCO are clearly excited about their subject matter, but you never doubt that they care about the people involved.

I agree; they walk a fine line between comedy and respect for those affected by the story. This is showcased very well in the episode about Jonestown. I'll never use the phrase "drinking the kool-aid" again after listening to that ep.

Especially when you consider - when this happened- Monica and Rachel had drifted apart and hadn't seen each other in forever. Monica wasn't even invited to the wedding Rachel ran out of. Monica had her flaws, but I think she was an absolute angel in not throwing a then-acquaintance out on her ass with not so much as a "hi!" in ages. And she let Rachel stay. And, even rent controlled, no way (assuming Rachel's family didn't help out) was Rachel chipping in on half the rent for the first while.

I'm with @deaja. That apartment was in Monica's family via her grandmother. If Monica wanted Chandler there - alone - that was her right. And, be honest, if it was reversed and that was originally Rachel's, Rachel would boot Monica in a heartbeat.

They actually kind of address "ownership" of the apartment in The One Where Mr. Heckles Dies. Rachel wants to bring home the hula girl alarm clock, which leads to the "you still think of it as YOUR apartment, don't you" conversation. The resolution of that conversation implies that they both feel that they share the apartment equally. Whether that's fair or right is another issue, but from Monica's perspective four seasons later, there should have been more thought and communication put into the Chandler move.

  18. Has anyone listened to Dirty John, the new podcast put out by the LA Times? There have been two episodes so far and I listened to both of them today. This isn't a story I was at all familiar with and I'm excited to learn more.

Also, I just listened to the most recent episode of True Crime Obsessed about FLDS/Warren Jeffs. It's amazing how much that group shares with the likes of the Duggars; similar terms ("keep sweet"), similar requirements for long hair and dresses, arranged marriages.

  19. I'm starting to wonder how Michael's plan could ever work long-term either...I mean if they're told they're in the Good Place, why would there be a fountain of clam chowder? Why would they be unhappy? They will obviously begin to question it every time. I guess that issue has been resolved now as they start to work with Michael, but it really hit me in this episode just how flawed Michael's original plan was. The concept is great, but I can't imagine how he would execute it. The simple fact is that the Good Place would have to be good for it to be believable.
