In next episode, Maddie will find the ring and she will propose to Chim...

    I think you are correct!

I wasn't a fan of the episode.  Love Chim, but I wanted to see more of Maddie's perspective on marrying him. Most of their relationship drama has been Maddie working through her trauma, so if there is a marriage proposal, it should be from her.

But these two seem to barely talk to each other about the important stuff.  I have no idea why they wouldn't have had a discussion on marriage and whether they both want it. Frankly, before last week's episode, I didn't think it was even on their radar. I don't doubt the legal, social, financial benefits of marriage, but they've had plenty of time to discuss it.  Do it or don't, but I don't understand why you can't have a conversation about it. There's nothing romantic, IMO, about springing a marriage proposal on someone when you're not even sure if they want it. Different strokes.

An Emma/Charlie/Daphne triangle might have been interesting for me under different circumstances; but I'm not feeling Charlie/Daphne because of the way Daphne has treated Charlie and his family before.

I totally get this.  OTOH, this all started because Charlie and fam conned the Maguires out of 10 million. Not exactly chump change.  So it wasn't entirely unreasonable for Daphne to start out harsh with them.

Same.  As I mentioned in an earlier episode, they see each other.  There are no pretenses.

I also think the actress who plays Emma is a weak link in terms of acting.

I want to disagree, but....yeah.  I kept getting distracted in this episode with Catherine Haena Kim opening her eyes really wide to convey emotion, especially in her scenes opposite Milo.  I hate that performance style.

    Indeed!

    9 hours ago, Trini said:

So I do appreciate some shirtless Milo, but that scene wasn't really doing what the writers wanted it to do, since they've just about killed the Charlie/Emma romance.

I think they were going for romantic tension once Charlie's secret got out, but the writing didn't support it.  And while the actors have chemistry, it's not strong enough for the supposed love story they're going for.

When Emma was getting weepy talking to her mom about Dad's affair, I rolled my eyes.  Like, girl, you and you 2-3 month romp with Charlie is NOT parallel with a married couple with 2 children who have navigated the highs and lows of long-term commitment, some of which included emigrating to an entirely new country and culture.  Please stop the drama.

Hottie David better not be dead! Interesting that the girlfriend recognized the car was rigged to blow and warned them to get out.  Not something the average person would be aware of.

I loved Daphne's purple suit at the beginning of the episode.  I enjoy her wardrobe in general.

I was just aghast that we were supposed to believe that Tate Donovan was Chris Evans’ dad, but then I realized he’s almost 60.

I was confused about that too, but I remembered movie magic where actors within 10-15 years (sometimes less) of each other perform parent/child relationships. Chris is in his 40s, so it's a stretch. I mean, yes, there are still teenage parents, but come on now.  At least this time it was the men instead of the women.

  7. I don't think Maggie and Chim need to get married. Just communicate about who's filing head of household and claiming Jee on the tax returns. I know the accountant stated that getting married would save them thousands of dollars, but I don't see it as a compelling enough reason for marriage. I think he mentioned something like $14/15 thousand, which is a lot in aggregate. But, that's not how taxes work for W2 workers - I assume it's more of a "see more in your monthly/biweekly net pay" sort of thing.

In any case, I'm sure they will.

It never occurred to me that Christopher might be dead until I read it here. The show can get dark, but I don't remember them killing off children of main characters (or even characters of the week). Maybe I missed it. I had a totally different read of the scene and Eddie's existential conflict.  I assumed it tied back to last week's episode of finding a romantic partner.

  8. I have mixed feelings about the season.

I appreciate what the show was trying to do with Will's journey, but he was kind of an ass most of the time.  Which is fine, teenagers can be assy. But the about face in the season finale was a bit much. I appreciate the growth, it just would have been nice to show it a little bit sooner.

I love that Hilary chose to go to Paris.  Even if she doesn't end up with the football player, there's nothing wrong with taking the time to treat yourself and figure out what you want.  If she reunites with Jazz, so be it, but the last minute "let me tell you how I feel before you get on a plane" just doesn't play that well these days. Dude, you've had multiple opportunities to communicate.  She doesn't owe you a chance just because you want one. I also rolled my eyes at that "Love hurts" BS.  Uh....no, Jazz.  You got jealous and callous.

Carlton has a long road ahead of him, I assume next season will be about rehab (in more ways than one).

Geoffrey probably had the most interesting storyline.  I assume the photo and cryptic calls mean that the old gang knows that's his son, and he's at risk?

Viv had little to do this season.  Didn't get intriguing until the finale.  I hope she doesn't quit the job for Carlton's sake. Especially since it really seems like he needs Phil more.

Not sure how unpopular this is but I think Ben Affleck is underrated as an actor.  He's fine as a leading man but his wheelhouse seems to be "supporting character who you're not supposed to take too seriously" like in The Last Duel and Air.

I prefer him over Damon as an actor.  Matt Damon has always been hugely overrated to me, especially during the "Bourne" film run.

Learned something new today! Had no idea Matt Damon was considered the good looking one of the two in their early days. But agree that Ben has aged especially well, given his addiction struggles.

It worked out, but I was expecting Vi to get the wife in trouble with her persistence. Coming to her house repeatedly and pushing to come in, where her husband could have potentially seen/heard. She was super loud when she was yelling through the door -- what if he'd been home?! It was putting her at risk. Vi did and said what most of us think we should do, but everything I've heard from survivors is that that really doesn't work. They are more likely to dig in and shut down.

Yes, it did seem reckless.  But maybe we can handwave that she knew the husband was at work? Still, lots of people have video surveillance of their homes, and I could totally see the husband having something like that to track the wife's movements.  Yet it was never mentioned, only the bluetooth device, so guess not.

  12. I lasted about 45 minutes and lost interest.  I thought the trailer looked fun and silly, and that Ana and Chris had chemistry in Knives Out. So I figured I'd enjoy this.

I don't know, maybe in Knives Out the chemistry worked because Chris portrayed a murderous sociopath and Ana a befuddled nurse? In this, Ana has a distractingly bad wig.  Adrien Brody is doing a terrible accent and I'm not sure if it's supposed to be serious or satire.

Agreed, and I think this was a bit of a misfire of the show.  In order for the "Gregory/Janine dance around each other's feelings stuff" to work, the show had Janine and Jacob, who are BFFs, not even talking about it for several episodes.  His "everyone I like knows it" line to Gregory had me going "I know that's right!"

I'm ambivalent about Janine and Gregory.  Part of me understands why Janine doesn't want to get romantically involved with someone at work.  Another part of me feels like it's standard TV fare to keep the angst going.  I have little patience for romantic angst, which feels like 90% of TV relationships.   Other parts of me agree with these points:

I mean, we could all take turns writing this shit...

I would not be at all surprised if Daphne is recruited as an asset by Emma. The show backed off of her as the pure antagonist, and the whole "Tell us the details of how you've expanded the business" spiel from Daddy Maguire while Connor looks on smugly is telegraphing them turning on her.

True, but I also wonder if David's heart is still in the campaign.  After the "Dad was compromised" reveal, it seemed like he was mainly running for office to continue the family legacy more than wanting to be a public servant. We shall see!

I don't know what the ratings are, but I can't see the show lasting beyond this season.  The performances are all fine, but the writing and direction seems...lethargic at best.

I don't recall hearing Eddie stating he's lonely. If he isn't interested in a relationship, I'm with others in that being single should be as respected as being partnered.  To me, it's just like preferring not to have kids - it's just as valid a choice as having them.

I also had a problem with Charlie blaming Leo for the con artist life.  Dude, you are 40 years old, not some teenager just starting adulthood.  If you really wanted out, you could have gotten out.  Not saying it would have been easy to put some distance between him and family, but people manage to do it everyday.

It was nice seeing Emma's family again.  The brother is a hottie.

  18. I just starting watching this, and have caught up on all available episodes.  Charlie and Emma have chemistry, but this episode kind of sold me on Charlie and Daphne.  Part of the reason I could see them working is because no one's hiding from the other - they know exactly who the other person is. He's known Daphne as long as he's known Emma, so it's not an issue of time spent.  Alas, I know that's not the endgame.

It's why I found the Charlie/Emma ILYs unconvincing - not just because it was so quick, but because they were hiding essential parts of themselves.  Granted, one's work doesn't have to define you, but it's evident that it does for both of them.  Plus, I'm not really interested in Emma being self-righteous and struggling to come to terms with Charlie.  Maybe Charlie's ILY was more authentic he said it knowing she was CIA, but I'm not buying it.

Things felt a bit rushed towards the end with the LRS192 stuff.  It would have been an interesting cliffhanger to explore later, but I suppose the showrunners wanted to wrap things up as much as possible just in case.  Still, they've set things up for a second season if it is renewed.

The least surprising plot twist? The Pritchard patriarch being the one to try and muscle his son's newspaper out of town.

I definitely did NOT cry when Silvie showed up at the newspaper, and the scenes honoring the dead loved ones afterwards.  Nope.
