  1. I find the round table discussions so interesting.  As someone upthread commented - it is all about MONEY!   Money for courses, money for materials (books, "tapes"), money for going up the bridge, money for family members to advance on the bridge, money for future courses, money for audits, money for future audits, money for future steps/rungs (?) on the bridge, money for membership, money for anything else they can think of to charge its members.

I'm amazed that not one person who is in this cult cannot see that getting money is the underlining reason for this cult.  It's when they get out that they realize that churches don't do this.  They realize that they have time and money for "extras".  Don't they see that in "regular" people?

    1 hour ago, Ina123 said:

That's pretty broad brush. I guess I must attend a special church. We do not require tithing. We do not require you to put money in the collection plate. Literally anyone can join who openly professes Jesus Christ as their Savior. And we are those terrible Baptists. All sarcasm aside, the vast majority of churches I know of have no monetary requirement. Do people tithe and put money in the collection plate, yes, willingly and with no expectation of anything but fellowship and worship and a helping hand when needed.

I agree Ina123!  The church that I attend has a variety of services for its members but also for anyone who "wanders" in and needs help.   Classes are offered, we have special speakers throughout the year, we have limited courses (they run about 4 - 8 weeks).  We raise money or goods to help people in our community (not just church members).  We raise money for specific purposes (like a new hall, furniture for classrooms, new AC/heating unit, etc.  When it is paid for we stop giving money.

I found how they offer "refunds" and get around it...I have no words!   What a scam!!!!

  2. Christi and Mimi's childhoods were awful!  I can't imagine a parent (mother or father) who would callously abandon their child. Yes, I know it happens in this world but it still boggles the mind.  One of the saddest part for me was how Mimi kept hoping her mom would speak out and grab her and say that they were both leaving.  The heartbreak she must have felt when she realized it wan never going to happen~~  I just can't imagine it.  Also Christi talked about the unsafe places that she was left and her mother being clueless and blaming her and her sister.  But I guess that is part of the "laws" of this cult.  That a  person is to blame for being caught in a situation where they have no power or voice to change it.

No, you're not kicked off, but they kind of scolded Kenley, whereas now they are defending Claire, reminding them that designers inspire one another.

That was my point regarding Kenley (I misspelled and wrote Kesley in my original post).  Not that she was disqualified or kicked off.  But that she was scolded or chastised for having a design that was sooo similar to someone else's design.   The judges have commended designers who are inspired by and give a hint of someone's design, style or an era of clothing without it actually being a direct copy.  Claire's designs (as well as her sister's) seemed to be almost an exact copy of something that someone had or that they/she saw.  Yet the judges seemed oblivious and actually seemed to say, "Hey, it's okay to blatantly rip off someone else."

  4. The runway was fine.  Just some thoughts:

Regarding Claire's blatant rip-offs throughout this season (along with her sister!!!) I have something about that.  In the season of Kelsey, she made a dress - it was really good.  Yet, Kelsey was in the bottom.  The judges told her it was tooo close of a copy of a recent (at the time) show by a famous designer (can't remember name).  She said she'd never seen his work, but the judges still chastised her because they said she should keep current to what others are doing SO that there would be no copying.  Kelsey got scolded for copying without even realizing that she was copying.  And now??? Claire gets, "Well, we get influenced by the people whose work we are seeing." And apparently that is okay now.

Although I really don't care for Brandon's aesthetic (I do think he is a very nice person with a go with the flow vibe) I kind of liked what he did.  However, he did not do what the challenge required and should have been on the bottom.  This happened with the guy who got caught with the pattern books.  In one challenge he clearly made a beautiful dress.  Seriously, a great dress!  Here comes the "But" , but he did not design or include a dog outfit to go with the dress. He made a cloth collar to go around the dog's neck.  So he was in the bottom, he was declared safe due to the great dress he made.  The judges told him that if he had included a dog outfit, he would have won.

I thought that Ayana should have won.  It met the perimeters of the challenge and it looked good (Liris did a great job selling it!!).  I did like Margaria's - as others have said it gave a princess vibe without being princessy.

I loved Kentaro's simplicity and yet it was striking in my opinion.

Bhatana (sp?) made a terrible design!  I really like her but what she made was awful (coming from a person who thinks a shirt with buttons and jeans is dressy enough).  And poor Amy!  I really wanted to like what she made but it was not cheerful nor exciting nor fun which is what Shopkins are (or so I am told by my second graders!) I like her too but yeah, she had to go.

And just one more humble opinion - although, we may not like how Margarita and Michael handled the whole Claire situation, I have to give them a benefit of a doubt.  They did speak up, as did others to producers apparently regarding the twins'  "helping" each other, clearly copying their own clothes as well as others (Addidas, the model's outfit) and were disregarded.  I really think the producers wanted a blow up of some kind, and Michael gave it them.  Margarita and Michael both felt bad about Claire but she did it to herself because she did the cheating not them.  So we might not like or agree as to how they handled the whole thing, the bottom line is that Claire cheated.

    .

  5. I'm sorry but Claire did not deserve the win.  Although, what she made was fine - it was not fashion forward nor unique.  Kentaro's (despite too much fabric) was beautiful.

And (it definitely does NOT pain me to say) Claire and Sean have clearly copied (the model design challenge - a direct copy of what the model and designer wore the day they met Adidas) or "borrowed" practically since they started on this show.  I don't understand why the judges did not see this, nor why Tim didn't say anything (he saw things that judges have plausible deniability about).  I think it would be difficult for the other contestants to say anything but someone did say something back in the season with the guy and his pattern book as well as his disappearing.  It was so strongly felt that he was "aufed", based on what the other contestants said that they saw (I really don't remember if the book was actually found).

As for Margarite - well, count me in as someone who has had to plow through blatant unfairness or see others not being called out for things that you (or I) would be called on the carpet for.  This has happened to me.  Then when I finally can't take it anymore, I sound like an idiot or a whiner.  Sorry totally about me (although Margarite kind of annoys me but way less than the twins ever have).

  6. I found this episode fascinating!  Paul Haggis was clear, calm, and collected as he shared his experiences.   As others have said, when he was trying to say that no man is perfect and began to use Martin Luther King as a comparison or example, then was completely shut down - I thought, "Did I just hear what I heard??"

Do the "celebrities" who are in really believe this stuff?  Or have they just been willingly blind because they seem to be treated well and catered to? Or is it as Paul H. said in regards to himself - that they "pick and choose" what they want and try to disregard the rest?

I think this cult is just so sad!  You can't trust anyone (not even family), your "church" records your "confessions", your seem to live under constant threats, you can be subject to punishment for perceived "sins", you are encouraged to get into debt to afford the "church", and you are told to not see family as family.  Just a terrible thing to be in.

  7. This episode was sort of interesting.

I kind of agree that Brandon's was more "fashioney" than others, but it stayed within his style.  Although he won (because the garment was unique to the judges) and he was rightly "challenged" to grow and show more range.

I liked Kenya (?), Margarita, and the guy at the top (can't remember his name and too lazy to look it up).  Margarita's really made her model feel beautiful and sexy - even though I thought Margarita was a bit whiny when she found out her model, she really pushed through and made something beautiful.  And say what you will about Kenya's garment, it was beautifully made and looked great!

I kind of wished that they had kept Aaron (yeah, I know it was horrendous) but at least it elicited a reaction - not a positive one, but still a reaction).  Claire's was just there.

Speaking of Claire what was up with that attitude?  "I'm not going to grovel and say thank you for making me safe" or words to that effect.  Yes, you should!

  8. I really enjoyed this episode too.

The breakdown of money spent was interesting to say the least.  But (I have said before in another post) having to pay for annual membership, courses, books, and mandated "assemblies" throughout the year - aren't those enough red flags that this "organization" is NOT a religion?  Most real religions don't do that to their parishioners/congregations/members/believers.  Most churches offer services for free (even to people who do not "belong"). Or  charge a nominal fee (to cover basic costs of services) which can still be negotiated if the person is in need.  Haven't any of these people been part of or around anyone who belong to a traditional church or have a traditional faith?  All I can do is compare to my faith/church.  We do give to our church but just what we can afford.  We are offered classes, books, services, etc.  Sometimes they are free and sometimes there is a nominal fee to cover costs but that's it.  I don't understand how they can think it is normal to give all of their $ and get into debt to give even more.

I thought it was funny when Leah was going to find out about Xenu and her mom asked to be with her when she did.  Leah's reaction was"WTF" and when she looked at her mother, her mother's reaction was "Isn't it amazing?"  I laughed!!

The total cost to get to level 8 was about half a million dollars!! (This doesn't include "regular" church stuff like books, tapes, mandatory offerings.)  But if you don't receive all the "gifts" it is because you still need level 9 and 10 - which has not been invented yet.  And keep in mind that in an instant you might have to start all over again!!

  9. I still don't know everyone's name - but some how I know the twins!!!  Just like with my class of second graders you learn the names of those who annoy you the most!!  They are both so overly everything!! And I don't care for what they design either :(

I really liked Samantha's design and thought the one who had jumpsuit with the top that changes was kind of cool looking.  I thought one of them would have been in the top three as opposed to Margarita (whose dress I didn't hate, it was nice I think).

I thought Brandon's was different but as others have said, it didn't really say dance or movement to me.

The right person was sent home but I wished it had been one of the twins.

  10. Well, congratulations to Candice.  Although she wasn't my favorite, I have to admit she did an awesome job all season.  I would have liked Jane to win because she was my favorite.  But the wonderful thing about this show is that the finalists are all so good and seem like such nice people that really whoever wins I am happy for him/her!

  11. I live in So. California and saw it. It  is  repeated on Tuesday night at 10:00pm and on Wednesday afternoon (can't remember time) on a channel called socal pbs.

Andrew was so happy to win star baker!  He did a good job with all three bakes.

  12. This has always bothered me.  That they claim that the "chores" the children are/have been assigned has to do with age and (although not specifically state, but certainly implied) sex.  But the girls do not seem to know how to clean house, do laundry, cook a good meal.  If they had all of these "jurisdictions" as they grew up, adding more responsibilities and higher expectations, then each girl should be a wiz at being a stay at home mom - including being organized, neat, and clean.  These married daughters don't seem to know how to do any of the jobs required.  Especially Jill and Jessa, they both seem so messy, dirty, and woefully inadequate for keeping house.

Jessa's house was disgusting!!  Her excuse that she has two children is so bogus!  i have friends who have two, three, and even four children under the age of seven plus hold down a full time job and their homes are usually neat, tidy and clean - sparkling, magazine perfect?  No, but also not disgustingly filthy where you are afraid to sit down.  It doesn't take much to sweep, dust, do dishes and clean a kitchen as your toddler and infant take a one or two hour nap. It seems that Jessa does not take pride in her home nor feels satisfaction in keeping it clean and neat.   I am not the best cook or best at keeping my house super clean, but I do find satisfaction in a job well done, whatever that job might be.  Maybe that's what missing in Jessa (and Jill too! Actually, in the majority of the family members).  No pride, work ethic, or satisfaction in completing a task or job.

LBH: "If you don't give us the storytelling, tell us about your family, you will be going home."

I haven't watched every show BF has ever been in, but I've watched enough and I've never, ever heard him tell a story or share family tidbits.  I know he's an Irish guy from NYC and that's it.  And somehow he's managed to be a celebrity chef and a star of shows people want to watch.  Kermit and Medusa aren't around any more so who's pushing for these family tales?  I'm still waiting for the finalist who is an orphan raised by wolves.

This is what I'm talking about with the stories.  I've seen cooking shows on other channels and I really don't recall the cooks sharing any stories about the food.  I hear them give recommendations of what else to serve. what can be substituted, what can be added, or what can be omitted.  I've heard them say, "I put blank in because I really like the taste/flavor of it."  Once in a while someone might say,"My blank would make this for us when I was blank." and that would be the extent of the "story".
I am not a very good cook, I want to learn how to make a dish from someone who can cook and give clear directions. If they are entertaining (not with stories!) as well (a bit like Jason - who I think is funny despite his sayings and too many "honeys") so much the better.  I've actually made a few of the dishes from some of these shows and they have actually turned out pretty good!!

  14. I just can't stand that they want a story!!!!   That is just so stupid ~ I've watched Tiffani's show and she doesn't have a story for every single dish.  Sometimes it's just "I love how --- tastes."  And that's it, on to the instructions.

I can't stand Matthew's smug half smile.  He is just so irritating.  His first presentation was really bad.  He sounded annoyed and at the end it looked as if he wanted to toss the plate at someone.   He was a more toned down and personable at the second presentation - but I still didn't like him.

I thought that Rusty did a really good job on his second presentation, too.  He was calmer but with a dash of a hearty personality - if he stayed that way I think I could watch a show of his.  I really don't enjoy when he is loud and over the top like in his first presentation.

I was surprised by Amy - she even said that she would have to come up with a story to go with her sandwiches - what happened???   Perfect opportunity to make up a story and practice it. Why didn't she do that?

I'm sorry - but when they said that Cory had to be more vulnerable - WHAT???  What did they mean by that?   Why didn't they give an example when they themselves showed vulnerability on their cooking show?  But then in the same breath said that he was more relaxed and open?

I can't stand their continued harping for a story.  It really bothers me that this is an important ability for them.  Plus the ones who get a show, I don't hear them tell stories about anything.  Or if they do they are so inconsequential that I don't even notice.   I love to bake (usually follow recipes that I find interesting/tasty/sweet. not even close to being an expert amateur) but I bake stuff that I like to eat.  And guess what? I don't have a story for anything I bake!

I'm not sure Jessa is too concerned with his fluid intake as Spurgie is often shown with either sippy cup or a bottle in many pictures, as well as on the show. I was kind of surprised she put him to bed with a bottle, I didn't think modern day moms did that.

MODERN DAY MOMS usually don't.  But these are the Duggers!!!   How modern are they, really? Mid twentieth century??

  16. I'd kind of forgotten about the "reveal".   Weren't some of those "little" kids kind of old for this game??   And what self-respecting 13 year old (looking at you, Jackson!) puts on detective get up and participate in a silly game??  It seems as if he has latched on to the idea that if he behaves younger he might get more attention. (BUT none of the younger children appear to get any attention with the exception of Josie.)

And the ones reading the clues seemed to have problems reading and appeared to look more at the picture Derrick kindly provided (maybe he knew that they couldn't read the clues?) to find the next clue.  I did find it kind of normal that Jordyn and her sister fought over who found the box first!

  17. Some of this was painful to watch!

*The "drama" about Jill's neck - the ominous music as the doctor revealed that NOTHING was wrong!!!  And the news that Jill does have blood flowing to her brain, that was a surprise.

*Derrick looked awful!!  His face looks crooked, his hair dirty, he looks as if he has lost too much weight.  What ever happened to that CLEAN, NICELY DRESSED young man??  And what was that comment that he didn't want his son to ever think that he (Derrick) ever thought that the son could have been a girl! What???  When would that ever be brought up in a conversation??   I noticed that Derrick was the only one who thanked Jana for babysitting when they left.

*Joy got to drive over to Austin's house (an HOUR away!) by herself?? Yes, there is a camera crew with her but that never stopped them from sending a younger chaperone before.  (BTW nice car, Joy!)  Helping with dinner was not a big deal to me.  Whenever we visit we always offer to help with dinner (or anything else), sometimes the offer is accepted and sometimes declined. BUT for her not to know Aston's (can't remember the potential husband's name) his dessert as she dreams about their engagement and wedding??

*Jinger and Jeremy studying Spanish was kind of cute. I liked that he teased her in a sweet friendly way and not in a mean way (as the Duggers seem to do at times). I also liked that Jeremy said Jinger underestimates her abilities - I hope he continues to be supportive of her as she grows.    And did I hear Jeremy correctly?  Did he say that they were taking a class together to learn Spanish?  Also Jinger saying she is enjoying her life in Laredo, away from her family seemed inferred :)

  18. Oh, my goodness!  What can I say about this episode?!

Some of the food they brought.  We used to camping when I was younger (it's been years) and we took things that were easy to cook and did not take a lot of time to make.  I  don't remember taking yogurt (??), mushroom soup (which I hate, that might be why we didn't take any).  And I've watched a couple of shows that featured "glamping" and an almost complete kitchen was brought, as well as a variety of foods to choose from. I thought the "elevating" could have been helped with an appropriate "pantry".

I thought that Jason's team would win.  the only one who had a problem with presentation was Cao - and all of the things they made seemed to be well-received.

Matthew - What a jerk!!   He not only interrupted Amy with his HELPING but he actually got in her way physically and moved her things around.  What could she do really??  I've been in situations like that a time or two. I would just step back mentally and waited for a "natural" moment to jump in.   But Matthew was just so heavy handed, he really didn't leave an opening for her.  Then the judges dinged her for not talking about the sauce - she couldn't because of Matthew.  And what was that scolding of Mathew? It was just a don't do that again with the focus on Amy and how she just gave her time to Matthew - what???   So unfair.  (Especially when you line it up with how Rusty took Suzanne's time and she was taken to task about it.)  And it turned out that her dish was good and Matthew's not so much.  THEN when Giada said something like, "SHE is a mom with two kids.  Why didn't she talk about them?"  Well, maybe she would have if MATTHEW hadn't taken her presentation time!!   But again making a contestant one-dimensional.

Although what Trace prepared wasn't good, his presentation was.  Rusty's presentation was not good and neither was his food.

That's it - I think my rant is over.

*All the southern accents are kind of growing on me  :)

  19. What the heck was Giada wearing?  As someone said, she seemed to have borrowed from Dolly Parton. OR this!

    2 minutes ago, LittleIggy said:

I thought Giada's dress made her look like one of Capt. Kirk's alien conquests of the week.

The head to head was interesting.  What I listened for was not "passion" or "entertaining" but what was in the dish and what it looked like, as well as knowledge by the presenter.  In the first course Addie did a better job describing her dish with polish.  Rusty was just bombastic and his dish was really a side dish.  Addie was right with her choice of appetizer.  And Addie showed "passion" in the dish itself where it rightly belonged.

Matthew's presentation seemed kind of weird to me - although his dish did look good.  David did a good job of meshing a pretty good presentation (still kind of loud for my taste) and a good dish.

Amy and Cole (??? The guy with the beard that is not Rusty). His presentation seemed angry - I understand this.  When I first began presenting I was so nervous that I sounded upset or angry or rushed.  But got way better with - yes, practice.

I don't eat baklava (sp?) very often nor am I a world eater, but I know what it is (I watch the Great British Baking Show!) and that you need to put butter (lots of it) in it.  Yeah, Suzanne was the right choice to go home.

What was the point of having the diners choose between two dishes?  Shouldn't it have been brought up somehow during the judging?  Because (despite certain personal preferences) choosing a dish because of a presentation would be a good indicator which type of host/cooking expert someone would like to see on tv, right?

    • Love 4
  20. I did not see the episode until today.  One of the problems the two teams that loss had was that they did not tie their dish to Beauty and the Beast.  They were busy trying to get their "viewpoint" across when the focus should have been on the dish that they made and connect it to the movie.  They also did not lay a nice table.  (When did the table have to tell a story?)

I still can't stand Matthew but he was right when he said that they should practice. I give presentations in front of my peers and I always practice even if it's something I have done before.  It doesn't make me sound "rehearsed", it makes me sound professional and knowledgeable.  In fact for me it keeps focused on what I want to say and how.   That whole team might have done better just by their presentations - that's what saved Cao (sp?).   And no adult should be saying "ooey gooey".

Rusty was a jerk to Suzanne (I don't care for her either but...).  He really made a point about her going over her time "all the time".  When did he see this happen??  Then he took her time, which kind of screwed her up. Why wasn't he dinged for that?  At least the judges seemed to take that into account with her.  AND ,David - Gaston was not a nice person in the movie!!!

  21. I saw the wedding again (I can't believe I did that - maybe it's like watching an accident on the road).  Anyway, why did Michelle walk Austin down the aisle with his mom and his dad was behind them?  Was there a reason?

I was also thinking about the marriages of the older girls.  To be honest it seems that Jessa and Jinger (after less than a year of marriage) seem pretty happy with their choices.  Although Bin seems like a doofus, he also seems pretty easy going and to really love Jessa.  And even though Jessa seems a bit self-centered for my tastes, she seems to care for Bin too.  Jill on the other hand seems to project a holier than thou attitude and very preachy.  Also as others have said, not interested in her first child.  And neither does Derrick.  They don't seem to know how to deal with a toddler - a good example is trying to tell an 18 month old about a new baby!  It seems to me that underneath all that they try to project, they seem so sad or dissatified - with each other, their life,  and what they do.

Maybe Jana has the right idea.  "I can't leave my younger siblings." could just be an excuse to NOT have to get married.  She can always help siblings' families to get her taste of taking care of children without having her own.  If that is her plan, good for her!  She found a way to get around the strictures of fundy life and still do what she wants to do.

  23. Wow!!  So much to say about this "event"!  Some random thoughts and observations:

    - What the heck was JD trying to do?  I've seen my second graders do a better job!

    - I thought it was sweet that "Joe" wanted to  propose to Kendra.  AND it looked like they wanted to actually KISS!  The downer was when Austin (?) said, "No kissing" and Joe basically said that kissing was dirty. "It's all clean."

    - I liked when JB said something like "we'll be early" when going down the stairs and Joy said, "We need to be down now."  Then ORDERED everyone to line up - loved that!

    - the wedding planner saying that she wanted to know what kind of wedding Joy wanted so she asked (not Joy!) Austin.

    - Where was Miracle Josie?

    - I've been to weddings having to be done very budget conscience (A fiend of mine got married in her apartment living room and it looked nicer than this one!), but this looked real cheap!

    - I thought Joy's dress was okay but what was up with the "shoes"?

    - Derrick looked bad!  He has a manbun??? His mouth seems crooked when he speaks.  Jill didn't look good either.

Then they showed the before wedding stuff - What?? shouldn't that have been shown like before the wedding?  But I'll go with it.  I kind of liked the way Jinger and Jeremy were shown in Laredo.  JEREMY, trust us - keep her in Laredo with you!!  Although, Jinger might need to find something to occupy her time besides keeping house.  Maybe she could help her husband at food banks, kitchen, etc.?

My goodness, JOY'S feet!!   I love to go around barefoot in my house but before I put on my shoes I WASH MY FEET!!.

What really bothered me was the way Jill and Derrick tried telling an 18 month old baby that he would have a sibling in six or seven months   NO!!  You don't do that.  It was just silly (okay, I mean stupid).

And as a side note:  Joy is 19 years old!  When I was 19 I was attending community college (only because I didn't want to pay university fees for basic classes), going out with friends  twice a week, working part-time, going camping, sometimes just hanging out, volunteering at my church, learning to take on some adult responsibilities and basically growing up.  Joy does not seem even close.  As others have said, it seems like a role that she was given to play and is willing to do it.
