  1. How is Junior's being scared 'bs' though? It's a legitimate reaction to college. Just because you're a good student doesn't mean college is for you. Part of becoming a grown up is being allowed to change your mind.

And Junior never tells anyone (Jack doesn't count) about his feelings, because he doesn't have any recurring or semi-recurring characters on the show to act as his confidant.

The character who previously served that purpose (Zoey) is over on her own show, having her own come to jesus meeting, about her own college experience.

Kingsley’s sudden meltdown felt weird after the last couple of episodes where he was being nice and trying to form relationships with his dad and brothers.

It didn't feel weird to me.

Jeff had slowly making progress with the Lyons over the back nine episodes, only to have his mom (who he now knows is an unreliable narrator) abandon him and Lucious gruffly rebuke him (albeit under stress).

He's a kid who always desired a father who no longer felt he belonged anywhere. When he was with White Tracy he could position Lucious as the villain in his life. But spending time with Lucious, individually and alongside the rest of the family, he realizes that life isn't that simple.

The real tragedy is that Jeff never gave himself the opportunity to really know his family before he made such a rash decision.

Glad Andre survived. And now he and Teri are married. That should be interesting

It'll be really interesting to see their dynamic next season. With the family in disarray, Giselle & Becky leaving, his health issues and Teri's pregnancy, Andre's gonna have his work cut out for him, keeping Empire afloat. That likely won't sit well with Teri who will likely demand he cut back his involvement in the company for his own good.

It will also be interesting to see how much Hakeem matures next season. He's always been the runt of the litter, but he's also had a solid business sense.

  4. Terrence, Taraji, Trai & AZ were FANTASTIC this episode.

It's sad Kingsley died (especially as he began truly bonding with the rest of his family) but the character has been an accident waiting to happen since the beginning.

Andre Royo does SO much with so little. He's Lucious only consigliere with any real staying power.

Candace & Carol are hilarious. "You're smelling a little ripe!"

Wood Harris continues to be a compelling antagonist.

Giselle & Becky are adorable. Their label is gonna fail but at least they're gonna give it a shot.

Jamal was definitely missed (for the better and the worse) this episode. Hopefully Jussie will get his legal situation together so Jamal can return at some point next year.

Hakeem, Devon & Tiana deserve better.

    White Tracy is INSANE.

  5. Marvel Will Unveil Post-‘Avengers: Endgame’ Slate This Summer, Says Bob Iger

    Quote

Disney CEO Bob Iger hinted during the studio’s quarterly earnings call Wednesday that Marvel Studios will likely unveil the next slate of films from its cinematic superhero universe at some point this summer.

Iger declined to give specifics about what masked heroes will be in the spotlight for the next phase of Marvel films, though he said “Avengers: Endgame” provided some clues regarding what the future of the comic book empire will look like.

“There are huge opportunities,” Iger said of the possible sequels, spinoffs and standalone superhero films to come. “There are many many different directions that we can go.”

But he didn't struggle, he just instantly gave up on Howard, the same college he decided to go to in spite of his mother's wishes and despite his father's usual shenanigans, in what was one of his best episodes yet.

He decided to go to HU after a single visit. Visiting a school and actually attending the school are two different things. Hearing how actively unprepared he was for his future, from his roommate, instantly punctured all Junior's initial hype about attending college. That is not unusual.

During his campus visit, Junior only focuses on the variety of blackness at HU, not it's academic record or what he, himself, wants to do in the future.

It's entirely fine for him to have reservations about attending college. It's the exact same thing his older sister is also currently experiencing. He could've handled the situation better, but he's no obligated to attend college, if he feels ill equipped to handle the experience. That's a waste of resources, and it clears a spot for a kid who actually wants to be there.

I agree with the menial tasks bit, not so much the other stuff. Despite the overall shoddiness of the gap year arc, Junior has had some solid development with his relationship with his dad.

Junior has had TONS of development with Andre, long before this season. The Andre & Junior of Season 1 is NOT the Andre & Junior of Season 5, which is a great thing.

Whatever else you could say about Junior, he was always a conscientious student before, now he's dropped his education by the wayside for a really contrived reason.

Not all high school students, even the good ones, are able to make the often difficult transition to college.

And further, it's not out of character for Junior who admitted to being a gigantic mama's boy, and semi-jokingly, identified his need for a gap year, all on his own, long before the HU debacle.

The problem is the writers have Junior engaging in menial tasks, like obsessing over DeVante and chaperoning Diane's dates instead of committing to rigorous character development the character so desperately needs.

Well, he had the surviving Asgardians, Korg and Miek (with no explanation as to how they did survive) so it's not like he's all alone.

That doesn't excuse Valkyrie allow Thor to become Sakaar-era her imo. It would've been nice to get 5-10 minutes with her, prior to the debut of Neckbeard Thor.

Maybe he met a nice girl in Wakanda. I mean, he couldn't have been herding goats the whole time. Could he?

You don't think he got his hair in those spiffy ponytails by himself, do you?

One of the things I enjoyed about Civil War was seeing how Natasha had become the connective tissue of the group. Even in that movie, she seemed to be the one who was keeping tabs on and checking in with everyone. I was a bit surprised that they avoided the potential Natasha-Bruce romance so thoroughly in Endgame, but I know that was a polarizing pairing to begin with. Anyway, I agree that she was shortchanged.

The one relationship the MCU was never developed was Natasha & Thor.

She has significant relationships (Bruce) and ties (Steve/Tony/Clint) to the rest of the Original Six, but she and Thor barely shared any screentime.

  11. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Overtakes ‘Force Awakens’ & ‘Furious 7’ Overseas with $1.2B+; Globally Now #6 Pic Ever At $1.66B+

    Quote

Fueled by the May Day holiday in many markets, Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame snapped up a further $157.8M at the international box office on Wednesday. The offshore total through yesterday is $1,211.8M — in just eight days of release — and sees Endgame overtake Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Furious 7 to become the No. 4 highest-grossing movie of all time overseas. Globally, Endgame on Wednesday also topped F7 and The Avengers to land at No. 6 on the all-time worldwide chart. The global cume is $1,664.1M as the Anthony and Joe Russo-helmed series-ender hurtles towards $2B this weekend.

As for China, estimates provided by Disney for today (which are not included in the above) are a $50M (RMB 336M) Thursday, for a local cume of $509M (RMB 3.43B). Yesterday, we noted below that Endgame had already become the top import ever in China. Today it became the first to cross the $500M threshold. It is on its way to over $600M, but ticketing platform Maoyan has lowered its cume forecast, slightly, to RMB 4.1B ($610M).

Taking the China Thursday estimate into account, Endgame has already passed Jurassic World to the No. 5 spot globally. The next pic it has to dust is Avengers: Infinity War which it should catch this weekend, as well as The Force Awakens, through Sunday. Thinking is it will also soon top Titanic to become the No. 2 movie ever worldwide.

As for the Avatar question: As noted below, this has been a largely holiday week in many markets and frontloading also plays a part; we continue to hear skepticism about whether these assembled Avengers knock out the Na’vi. We’ll know more about how the Infinity Stones land once the sophomore session is passed and we see midweeks starting next Monday.

  12. Paul McCrane is a fantastic director.

The music choices, the camera angles, the performances from the actors, the use of space and silence to enhance the emotional tone of the episode.

Just lovingly crafted work from everyone involved.
