I like John Heilmann a lot too.  Not sure why he's not being used as a Rach sub.  He subbed for Nicolle yesterday & was fine.

Oh, Ari is OK.  I'm just cranky cuz Rach is gone & may not be back for another week or 2.  Ugh, is there a support group I can join?

Btw, I saw Ari on the subway, maybe 4 or 5 months ago.  He's a tiny lttle guy & looked very unkempt, with stubble & uncombed hair & kinda messy clothes.  So if he's not naturally slick, that's OK with me, but if I gotta look at him on TV, he should clean up -- at least somwhat.  He usually does.

Oh, have you heard something more than the lack of announcement about her return next week?

I have something to gripe about Heilemann and his hosting for Nicolle yesterday, but I'll take it to the MSNBC thread.

I like Ari fine in his own show, but he is just not a good fit as a Rachel replacement.  But when you get down to it, no one is.  I listened to the show again that Nicolle guest hosted, and could not hear her interrupting anyone, despite what was said above -- I thought she did a far better job than Ari this week.

Sorry if posting that article with the spam in the comments was an issue. It was the one linked to as a source for the Decades wiki page concerning the carriage changes coming up and I didn't feel like looking for a better one at the time.

Not a problem at all!  I was just fascinated by all the bot comments, and glad for the alert in the article. I hope Decades stays on the air.

Here's the same article on what I believe (as a degreed academic librarian, FWIW, LOL) is the original platform: https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/weigel-broadcasting-co-to-launch-new-start-tv-network-in-association-with-cbs-television-stations-300685969.html

It's not clear to me from the article that the Start TV station is replacing Decades.
Here in Chicagoland we have UToo at 48.1, The Jam at 48.2, regular CBS HD at 48.3 and at 2.1, and Decades at 48.4 and at 2.2

I also wondered what Start TV would be replacing -- the article originally link made a reference to it replacing Decades on CBS Television Stations -- I have no idea if my Decades channel is on that network system.

Hey, I really appreciate having an MSLS librarian vetting the citations!!!  I read the more recent link you provided, and it was helpful, if not clear on the relationship to Decades TV.  But all fodder for this thread about ye olde tyme shows, for sure.

  4. You totally read my mind about the suit and shave!

Oh Jeez, Ari is back, but with the exact same ugly badly-fitting jacket & boring crappy tie he wore last nite.  Er, huh? And tonite he couldn't take 3 minutes to shave, so he looks like a homeless guy I just passed by on the subway.  Wow, I so can't wait for Rach to come back.

And, I thought he was haranguing David Corn unnecessarily, trying to make Corn part of the problem about the Steele dossier -- not fair, Ari, because TRMS was out in front of promoting all this information, so let's not blame Corn for putting it out there -- TRMS was in front of line at this buffet, and milked it for many episodes.  I thought even David Corn was looking surprised at the questions, but that might be my imagination.

And then after spending too much time interrogating Corn about things Corn himself said we knew from a while back, he only left three to four minutes for David Farenthold, who had a MUCH more interesting story to tell us today!

ETA:  I have to thank whoever decided the Manafort trial should not be televised live.  I would never leave the screen if it were on the air.  I could have listened to Joyce  Vance and Josh Gerstein for the full hour, recounting what happened in the courtroom today.  Okay, 90% of the hour on the trial, and the rest on David Farenthold.

Here's an article explaining what @Cobb Salad is talking about.

Oh, wow, if you want to see what a string of bot-generated "Comments" looks like, look at the comments for this article.  The first one looks legit, but all the others are the things that get sent to every blog.  But the article itself, so disappointing!  Those "woman-centric" dramas are a very mixed bag, some okay, some not.  Not a channel I will ever watch.  I guess it is possible that Decades will continue on some providers?  I can't really tell.

Decades is being replaced in September by StartTV, which will air dramas.  Checking their website it seems like it’s another Lifetime or Oxygen channel.  I like Decades, I’ll probably pass on this new channel.

Nooooo, I love the shows currently on Decades!  Right now, I am following "Family Affair", which I never saw when it ran originally, and most episodes surprise me with their array of topics and they way Brian Keith's character is written -- I know the show is available via streaming, but it is great to have it roll by on the television screen.  And "Newhart" early seasons are a treasure!  Oh, shoot.

Mike McFaul was also a dependably great & interesting guest.  Kudos to Rach's producers to book him when it was particularly appropriate.  Ari was asking him some inane question that I couldn't follow, but McFaul smiled & said -- Wow, you read a lot of spy novels.  Gave me a giggle.  Only one of the nite.  Ari was kinda dry & humorless tonite.  Not a great show -- other than a lot of interesting news going on & the good guests.  Rach, please come back!

Thanks, I did not hear what led up to "You must read a lot of spy  novels," so now I know not to worry about it too much.  Agree that McFaul is always a great guest, excellent background on all things Russian.  But no, it was not a great show.  I do like Ari, but TRMS sets a very high standard that we expect.

Ari's back.  His delivery is like a drill in my head, but he's doing a serviceable job.  Still, I'm distracted by his really poorly fitting ugly jacket.  He looked like a little kid wearing his daddy's jacket.  Wth?

Dependably good guests (like Clint Watts) save him.  He should send Barbara McQuade a thank you muffin basket.  She was great, as usual.

I thought I was being so shallow by being distracted by his ill-fitting jacket!  (But the tie is appropriate!)  I love Clint Watts, and had never seen that clip of him testifying to the House committee about Russian interference.  Wow, so on target.  (Jeff Goldblum [from about 20 years ago] really could play him in a film.  Or Clint could play Goldblum.)

ETA: What was the poem that Morse recited at the funeral? There was something said that implied he wrote it himself. Was it an original poem, or is it one I've never heard before? I loved that last line about looking west and seeing the landscape all brightly lit. Made me cry a bit. And I never thought I'd cry for Fancy!

The poem is "Say not the Struggle nought Availeth," by Arthur Hugh Clough.  It was a lovely choice, beautifully read aloud. Here is a link: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43959/say-not-the-struggle-nought-availeth

And the poem has an apt reference to the fact that his four colleagues would be looking for his killer(s):  "Your comrades chase e'en now the fliers"

  10. I am sure that all the anchors are prohibited from saying they will take a day or next week off -- but am in the pissed off crowd here, mainly because of expectations.  Of course they need time off -- I have no problem with that.  I have also noticed that Rachel used to promote the heck out of Richard Engel's specials on Friday evenings, but now, sometimes he just pops up with no advance notice from Rachel.   Or, MSNBC will run a promotion for a Richard Engel special "9 PM on Friday!", but Rachel will not mention that she will be off, so her viewers are kept a little in the dark (unless we are watching at other times of the day and see the promos!).

And I really, really appreciate it when the anchor says "Rachel will be back tomorrow."  But they NEVER say she will be back "next week", because that would make us stop watching.  I thought Nicolle Wallace did one of the best recent jobs filling for Rachel, and would tune in just for her.  But Ari, not so much.  The guest hosts do promote their Maddow show guest spots on their own shows.  I can imagine the in-house rulebook on this illusion: "(1) let the Rachel fans think maybe Rachel will be back, and (2) let's encourage the viewers to hope by *not* mentioning she will be gone; *but* (3) let's have Katy's or Ari's fan club know in advance to attract their audience base, as long as (4) Rachel's fan club doesn't find out that Ari announced on his show that he is guest hosting on Rachel's show; and (5) someone make sure Ari has a more dignified evening tie".

I understand that Rach needs her time off.  She ain't a robot!  But sheesh, MSNBC needs her.  Her ratings are good.  But it made my heart sink to hear Hannity's are so much higher.  Ugh.

Someone needs to say she'll be back next week.  I mean, she's said herself a zillion times how the Manafort trial is taking place in the "rocket docket".  The trial could be over by next week.  Would she take another week off & miss the whole thing?  Aw, c'mon, Rach, come back!

I suppose they don't do it because they're afraid viewership will drop off, but it annoys the shit out of me that Rachel (and Chris and LOD) don't tell us they're going on vacation or going to take off a few days.  It's not like we won't find out anyway when we tune in and they're not there.  It just feels manipulative and worse, discourteous.

maybe I dreamed this or made it up after the fact, but didn't Bright mention a deceased daughter in a previous episode? (Or was it only that his wife had died?)

I don't think he ever mentioned a daughter, and it was clear that Morse had no idea who the child was, so Bright offered some words about who she was.  And Bright's wife is alive -- he did mention that she was out of the house at the moment.

I'm late to this discussion of PBS cuts, but wanted to note that, years ago, in frustration, I bought a region-free DVD player and purchased any Brit series I cared to own from Amazon UK.  The player itself wasn't that expensive, but all those DVDs added up.  Still, I'm happy to own the complete Morse and Lewis series--every snarky remark and touching scene intact.

I did not know there was such a thing as a region-free DVD player!  There is a video store nearby (like, every movie and TV series from every country, everywhere) that rents out a U.K. DVD player for DVDs that they can only get in U.K. format.   I would not have rented it just for the leaf-raking scene, but would do it if there were a "lost" Endeavour episode out there!   (But now that I've seen the leaf-raking scene, I might take a U.K. DVD to the store and ask them to play that scene!)

Ari mentioned during his regular time yesterday that he would also be on at 6pm and I inferred that 6pm PDT = 9pm EDT = Rachel's show.  Although I'd be fine if I never saw that bizarre tie he was wearing Monday night ever again.

THANK YOU!  I thought he must have lost a bet to wear that tie in public.  I didn't hear him say he would fill in for Rachel, but I easily could have missed it.  They tend to run replacement hosts for her over two or three days, so it is unusual to have three different guest hosts in three different days.

  15. That was such an interesting episode, I had to watch it again to capture a few moments that were striking:

Chuck Rosenberg making the point that "collusion" = "conspiracy," which is the actual term in the criminal code.

I think I have heard Rosenberg say, probably on Nicolle's show, that to claim "collusion" is not a crime because it is not in the statute is ridiculous.  He (on another show) made the comparison to the term "bank heist", which is not in the criminal code.  "A bank heist is not a crime because it is not in the criminal code!"  No, Rosenberg pointed out, but "bank robbery" is.

Jeremy Bash pointed out that WE DO NOT KNOW if the Trump interpreter was in the room the entire time.  It would be so important to know if he decided to rely just on the TRUSTWORTHY Russian interpreter for the most sensitive discussion points.

I really enjoyed the Steve Schmidt segments.  I know posters here despise him, but he is a good interview.

If I can't have Rachel, Nicolle is a good replacement (along with my "brain massager"), Chuck Rosenberg!!

I completely agree -- I know there are plenty of Nicolle-disdainers among the MSNBC watchers, but she does a great job as interviewer on her show, and after some initial jitters tonight, she handled the show very well.  Was this the first time she has filled in for Rachel?  I know she has subbed for Brian Williams many times.  And after admitting she could not act out a transcript like Rachel (and who could?), she did a fine job of reading some pretty fascinating opening statements.  Nicolle has the ability not to need to be the center of attention, so lets news and interviewees become the focus, while keeping everyone on topic and making me laugh when she is just astonished at some behavior over at team POTUS.

And Rachel appears to be out for the week -- at least, she will not be here tomorrow.  Lawrence O'Donnell asked if he could look forward to seeing Nicolle at 9 PM on Wednesday, and she said "it won't be me," with Lawrence replying, "I guess I'll just be surprised."  And I liked that she acknowledged the irony of her filling in for Rachel when she said to Lawrence, "Gee, I used to be the resident Republican here, now look at me!"  (I like that she said "resident" instead of "token".)

Not only will you see him raking leaves, but how to make a perfect gin and lime drink :)

But, you don’t have to wait. When you look at the Amazon Prime Video section, make sure it says UK version. It will say PBS, but it is the ITV UK version. Promise! This is for series 5.

If only Bright could enjoy his gin. He shares to Morse that it is his daily time for his gin drink. I love that Bright has a daily scheduled drink.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!  PURCHASED AND WATCHED!  I can't believe they cut that scene; it was incredibly moving.  Bright's heart was breaking so many ways:  for Fancy, for not being able to do anything about it, for losing the station, and for his little daughter.  And the emerald phone was spectacular.  His daughter's name is the word for "sweet", so when he just said the words "Dulci.  Sweet. Tropics." -- it was like each word was a tragic short story.  (I assume "tropics" means she contracted malaria or something like it.)

I should have guessed that the one time Amazon told me that this was not the U.K. version, it would be the U.K. version.  I think the poor harangued employees on the chat line are provided with very little useful information, and this one guessed that "U.S. format" (for the DVDs) meant "U.S. version".

It's my understanding that PBS cuts most/all British dramas. I'm not sure why. But PBS where I live usually takes 90 min episodes and cuts them into two approx. 40 minute episodes. Grandchester episodes for instance run between 50 - 105 minutes, but usually run for about 45 min. on PBS.  They did the same with Lewis & Sherlock and probably all the others. For this reason, I look for them online through 'other' sources as soon as they've aired in the UK.

Same with Poldark (new version), which I stopped watching after season one because of the cuts.

Thank you so much for the information about Prime versions and the DVDs.  I thought the U.S. Prime version was the same as PBS!

    2 hours ago, BeckyThatcher said:

I watch from the US, but purchase the series on Amazon Prime. Each new episode is released on Amazon the same hour it premiers each Sunday in the states, eastern standard time. This way you get the UK version and no commercials. Afterwards, since you now “own” each episode,  if you want to rewatch, it’s downloadable to your library or can be accessed through the cloud. I think it’s about $2-4 per episode.

I pay for the HD episode presumably to see every angst ridden facial movement possible, but the SD is cheaper and very clear. Acorn TV might offer this separately as well.

I wish I knew more about the editing process for the US Masterpiece version.

I can see that removing one or two entire scenes is easier, Bright at home, Miss Fraizel outside the crime scene. But both are so extremely important to the viewer. Bright for insight, Fraizel for John Thaw. If they must cut, shorten a few moments throughout, 8 seconds here and there of driving, a few seconds less of walking through graveyards, etc.

I love graveyard walking scenes, that’s like BBC bread and butter to me, but to think of loyal viewers being short changed of vital scenes, makes me want to know more of the cost of editing and how it’s done.

I think they cut the entire scene. There was also a brief scene with Miss Fraziel at the murder scene that was cut.

Thank you!  I actually went back to look at that section to make sure I had not zoned out.  (I don't think I looked away at all during the episode!)  And it did seem that there was very little of Miss Fraziel in this episode, so a cut scene helps explain that.  I really appreciate seeing her, as her eyes are exactly the eyes of John Thaw, and it really is like having the older Morse hovering over the show.

Did you get the DVDs or did you see this in Britain?  I was thinking of getting the DVDs, but have been burned by ordering the "full UK" version, and having that not be true.  I have gotten refunds when this happened (with "Lewis" episodes), but I can't keep ordering and returning PBS versions!

As I recall, it happened after they told Trewlove about Fancy and after they find out The bullets that killed Fancy were from a gun not found at the scene. Morse goes to Bright’s house to discuss trying to find the killer. Bright dismisses the idea, but offers Morse a drink. That’s when Morse sees the the photograph of his daughter.

There was no Morse at Bright's house in the PBS version -- it was "bullets from another gun," then scenes at the school, then discovery of Ivory, then farewell to Trewlove.
