  1. Shallow aside: I thought Teddy looked offputtingly like someone who had had plastic surgery to try to look like David Bowie and was somewhat successful.

Neither ballerina was that good.  The inability to tell them apart was a stupid costuming move.  There is no reason one couldn't have been a white swan and one a black, given that it was a fictional pas de deux in the first place. I would not vote for either of them in case I voted for the awkward one and I couldn't tell which that was.

Travis's contemporary routine was definitely the most lacklustre of them all.  I hated Sonja's opening number; loved the duet which I did not find recognizably Sonja. Loved Bonnie Story's choreo and Stacey's.

Is the Broadway prize why they cast so few hh dancers?

I thought Jason's piece was more fun to watch than Sonja's.

I couldn't hear so much of what the girls were saying in their 8 seconds.  But I liked the way they did it in partners.

I understand why they changed it, but I completely prefer meet the top20 with small group dances.  So much more interesting.

Emilio was really funny with Cat.

The new voting system stops Canadians from voting.  Stupid.

  2. is this Teddy the guy who used to assist Mia? I certainly remember a Teddy being discussed lots previously.

I think chosing a genre in order to be cast in the show is fantastic - and to be able to get to top 20 in a secondary genre is rather awesome too.  I doubt this is the first season we've seen it.

  3. I love JaJa, but I have faith that she has garnered enough positive fan support through this experience to come back with more training in the vicissitudes of other styles and blow our heads off.  I will be devastated if there isn't a season 12.  Fox is the network that cancelled Firefly, so they're capable of any fuckwittery.

  4. Wow those are both awesome.  I had forgotten the S2 one - I think it was before I haunted youtube after the show...  S6 is the season I missed, so that one was new to me - it seemed longer than routines are these days or am I mixing the routine lengths up with DWTS?

  5. I think that many of the criticisms laid at Mia's door are things the show did to her.  I think they asked her to play nasty judge and I think the sycophantic hallowing of her choreo is on the show, not her. I loved most of her choreo and found some of her judging to be very interesting/useful.  I was annoyed by some of her antics, but I didn't think they really originated with her.  I also miss 'lil' C, especially his judging which, verbose as it was, is more interesting than anything Nigel or Mary have ever said.

And, I can't stand the dead-dad girl and think it's unlikely that anyone who has been given so much airtime is being cast as fodder.

  6. I loved so many of Jessica and Will's dances.  He was amazing and (I think) elevated her abilities.  Aesthetically, they were beautiful together. I don't think their personalities meshed all that well, but as a dancing couple I often found them to be undervalued:

  7. "Mary won dance awards at Hiphop International, and was supposed to be a member of We Are Heroes (winner of ABDC Season 4) but had to drop out because of some logistical and timing issues."

JaJa vs Marie....It's obviously likely that Fikshun could have seen her before:

  8. I don't know about Marie Poppins and Fikshun.  They did not telegraph that they knew each other in that dance.  In fact, I saw more than one piece of business that looked like invite and answer.  Also, her OTT response would indicate that she was astonished by the experience.  Maybe she's a great actress?  Anyhow, I'd love to know about that one.

  9.

but the show seems fresher somehow.

I said that I thought it was working on a new aesthetic in the first audition show thread -- I would agree that the show seems very different this season.  A little more grown up --- I'm not holding my breath that it will last though.

I don't think that Jenna is cool enough for Val.  Whereas I definitely am.

  11. I loved the slow krumper (personality and dance) and I thought what I saw of his choreography round was worthy of going on.  I liked that he and the anonymous girl he was with got comfortable with each other so fast.  Maybe at least he'll get a relationship outta the experience.

  12. We might find we need a Danny Tidwell thread here too.  I think it was the biggest thread on the dancers forum on TWoP's SYTYCD forum and I was so sad to lose it.  Danny makes me sad.  I hope he's happy and successful wherever he is right now - such an exquisite dancer.

  13. I feel the show has a different aesthetic this season.

I love that the judges actually say very concrete things during auditions.  I know it's crazy, but I hope they keep doing it all during the show.  I find myself wishing that they weren't casting a reality show, but are actually running a dance competition.

    I loved tonight.

I thought Bieber was hilariously stoned.  Until the comment about his biceps, I wasn't absolutely sure that he wasn't just putting it on to feed his new f***-up image.

I want to know if Fikshun had never danced with her before.  That was all kinds of awesome.

  14. I thought Nigel had dialled it WAY back this year.  I never actually found him all that creepy, but I expect it might be how close I am to his age.  I often wonder if the people obsessing about Nigel's "perviness" realize that they are often bordering on totally age-ist in their remarks.  Now, Nigel's strange homophobia (which I expect comes from his life in dance where someone as pretty and blonde and slim as him was, no doubt, assumed to be homosexual, in an era where homosexuality got socially-acceptable hostility from nearly everybody) is something that is worth being upset about, no matter how understandable it is that he may have ended up that way considering the mores of the world he grew up in.

Mary and Jenna on stage being stripped at was UTTERLY disgusting.  I don't think that men and women are the same nor that they should always be treated the same, but if Nigel had been in a chair on stage while 4 female "exotic dancers" teased him, the internet would have exploded.

  15.

Does anybody who goes on to choreography actually go on to do well on this show in the Top 20? I don't feel like their have been many over the years that didn't automatically make it through. Whenever I hear the judges say, "lets send you to choreography" I know they are fucked and probably aren't going any further.

As discussed many times on TWoP, the whole tv audition process is ostensibly a fake.  All dancers are seen by producers and go to choreography - no one makes it through to Vegas without.  Then the producers decide who they're going to show in "auditions" and that gets seen on tv.  I think this was reported and confirmed quite a while ago by actual auditioners IIRC.

  16. I know everybody's down on Bieber these days, but I clearly remember being impressed as all hell with him when he did his stint on SNL.  The boy could act and had a wonderful sense of humour.

The thing I find shameful is that our culture sets up these famous teens and then savages them.  My suspicion is that he'll eventually become an elder statesman of pop type, but I won't live to see it.
