  1.

Whoever designed and dressed Jasmine should have been shot - I was completely distracted by her costume not being skin tight.  So not snake like.

Due to idiocies of my DVR, I have a rather unflattering aspect ratio on the playback.  I kept thinking it must be my set that was making Jasmine's pants look so distracting fugly.

Jessica was horrible in that hh and I wasn't even that nuts about tWitch (and I am nuts about tWitch).  It looked like he was trying to dance down to her (which he is usually very good at concealing) and it was making him a bad dancer.

Travis's smugness during his FIRST EVER CONTEMPORARY BALLET piece was repulsive.  The piece had some nice aspects, but it was very interesting that you could never see Jacquie's feet and Chehon definitely had difficulty putting her down smoothly once or twice.

Thanks for the update re: Cat's performance last week (although last week was by no means the first time I'd been thinking she was off - I would never have snarked on a one-night basis (someone like Cat gets at least three off nights in a row before I'd comment, especially as I had to endure Leah Miller on the Canadian version).

  2. Zack's been my favourite since the first performance show, so I was seriously irked by JMG's choreo for him last week - it was crap, as was the costuming, the lighting, the music choice etc.  This better be the reason he was in danger tonight, America -- I'm looking at you.

That was the first thing I've enjoyed Valerie's dancing in.  But then Ade was there and that always makes me go a little soft in the head.

Now, I'm sorry that I gave in and finally dissed Cat last week, because she seemed all lovely and back to normal tonight to me.  Also, great hair colour.

I hate Tara Lipinski. She is freaking irritating.

  3. The thing I find amazing about Tanisha is her physical transformation when dancing.  In my eyes, she goes from being quite awkward looking and plain to being sure and graceful and stunningly gorgeous (esp in the girls' group routine this week).  Everyone goes on about Valerie's clear enjoyment of dancing, but to my mind Tanisha's mature enlivened joy outshines Valerie's ingenue self-satisfaction look every time.

  4. That paso was just dreadful.  Zack is my clear favourite, but the costumes didn't go with the stage, didn't go with the music, didn't go with the dance; the dance didn't go with the music etc.  JM should be bonked on the noggin for that horrible piece of tripe.  I couldn't believe the praise it received.  Both dancers looked somewhat straitjacketed by the volume of their clothes - it made all the sharp lines difficult to see.  If they'd been b3ed, they would have been out and I don't feel that's on the dancers.

  5. I would be sad.  They are finally trying some new ways of judging - being FAR more technical and learned then previously - and some new things like choreographers explaining steps.  The show is attempting to dip its toe into gravitas in a way that is not just Nigel being pompous and I like its tone. I will be extremely sad if it's cancelled, but they let it bleed for SO LONG.  I wonder if the ratings will go up when the Allstars arrive.

I'm sure they don't care, but I wonder if their ratings are falling in Canada too.  Now that there is no way for a Canadian to vote, I can imagine people might be tuning out.

  6. My faves and dislikes are solidifying.  Zach is by far my favourite guy (I was pained by the look on his face when he was b3ed), although I like Serge too and am concerned at how he seems so background-y so often - I can't stand Casey whom I find to be anti-attractive and Ricky is, by virtue of the over-praise, starting to approach that place where he can do no right.  I did like him in the group number.

Bridget is my favourite girl, hands down.  I don't know why I feel this so firmly.  I couldn't stand her in auditions.  Tanisha is a wonder. I loathe Valerie and that loathing is increasing fast.  I thought her facial expressions came close to ruining her group number. All the rest are unmemorable and I will not be sorry to see them go.

    That bollywood number was atrocious.

I thought that Brooklyn and Casey did everything they were capable of with their HH.

Marcquet is striking but wobbly and his time was up, bussing or no.  I thought Brooklyn should have gone in the first elims.

I liked both group numbers a great deal although I preferred Tayeh's by a sliver.  I do like group numbers where you can distinguish which dancer you are looking at. I enjoyed how different their energies were.

  7.

They really need to step up their game when lighting racially diverse performers.

Sigh.  We've been saying so for YEARS now.  Drives me crazy. Of course, if Nigel has managed to succeed in throwing Marquet under the bus, the issue will go away for this season (or am I forgetting someone of colour in the cast?)

  8. I really thought that the tweet gave context to the "Say something" performance AND that Great Big World was performing that particular song in gratitude for the way the show changed their lives.  I felt that the musicians were giving it their all in gratitude, so despite the fact that the song is so-so, I was touched by the performance.

I'm glad to see that others felt the clunkiness of that V.Waltz - I thought perhaps I was insane, but instead I'm being gaslighted by Uncle Nige. The dropped spin (what do you call it?) felt like Ricky had one of those dance mannequins in his hands.  And I reiterate, the colour of that dress on Valerie was atrocious.  She looked chunky and Ricky looked like he was wearing his bigger cousin's clothes to a wedding.

I thought Emilio's jive was fascinating in that he never looked like he was jiving yet he was doing all the steps reasonably accurately.  It looked like a new dance craze to me.

Mary looked drunk (I wonder if she'd been crying (her eyes (left one in particular) were so squinty), so the comment about the booze in her cup enhanced that feeling.

  9. Zack is rocking my world.   Interesting crush story between Rudy and whatsherface - if she's doing it to get remembered, it hasn't worked yet.

Tanisha and Rudy are possibly the most unattractive couple I ever remember seeing on the show and they're doing a great job.  Although theirs wasn't the only routine that I feel would polish up nicely with 5 more weeks of work.

What do we all think about the choreographers giving us moves?

I think that the judging panel are saying concrete things this year.  It's quite a bit more entertaining than the hooting and hollering.

I thought the beautiful dress would look way better in a colour instead of beige.  Ricky's outfit was a trifle sloppy looking.

The chess game was a great concept.  Some of the clothes needed to be silkier and heavier - the pouf and lightness was a bit of a mistake as I had trouble seeing lines sometimes.

So now Jessica will be with Macquet <sp?> - Hmmmm.  I thought Stanley might be a good pick to go, unless his dance was suffering from them lighting for Jessica's skin colour instead of his -- in which case, boo.

I can't stand Casey, but he really danced that.

  10. ThirteenthJuror, thank you SO MUCH fpr that - so good to hear Danny talking about some of what happened to him, although I expect there's a lot more.  Who is he married to?  I thought his engagement to that David guy who runs (ran?) the online Dance magazine broke up?  I'd love to know why he didn't ride the publicity wave - trying to find stuff on him has generally been rather difficult.

  11. I have always heard it pronounced foo-et- tay. Unilingual Canadians tend to pronounce french words in a slightly anglicized french way - so where the French usually put their stress on a second syllable, English Canadians don't always. This word is stress-unstress-stress to my ear.

  12. I wish Dan's Dutch show, the Ultimate Dance Battle, was still on the air.  THAT was a dancing joy - teams of dancers, selected through an audition process, each team living in a seperate house, each team under a choreographer competing in different styles.  They were fantastic choreographers and the dancers were really cool.  It only ran two seasons, but I really wanted it to be picked up in the States or Canada.  When Dan judged SYTYCda it was going strong in the Netherlands and I desperately hoped we would get it in Canada. A couple of selections (not particular faves, just what I could find on Youtube):

In this one, you can see the competing choreographers comment on another choreographers' work in boot camp.  This is the choreographer who won season 1 and famously danced in (one of?) her last competition number:

A particular fave (I wish I could find the one they danced to Agnes Obel's Riverside, it was so awesome):

  13. The archived announcements really don't make it clear what happened.  I blame Leah Miller.  I hated her so much that I'm still relieved not to have to go through the torture of watching her -- which, when you consider how much I loved so much of the show (and definitely preferred the choreo to the American version) says a lot about how egregiously awful she was.
