Stephen really should do some Broadway.
His few bars of “New York, NewYork” (with alternate lyrics) were spot on with just monologuing for warm up.
I’m imagining a duet with Randy Rainbow.

have to say though, much as i appreciated louis playing along, the guitar, i really missed when jon would play along on the piano.

That’s the main issue with SVU now - that Benson is always right, and everyone has to worship her or pay the price. Used to she could be wrong and other main characters could have different views than her, and not everything had to revolve around her, but with the departures of Stabler, Cragen, Munch, Huang etc no one questions her now unless they are a villain, the word of St Olivia is holy and sacred and never wrong. It makes for a lot of predictable episodes where if Benson gets a negative vibe from someone they are always guilty of something, and it doesn’t help that every likable character on the show exists solely to kiss Benson’s ass and tell her she’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. The last “good guy” character to call her out a few times was Peter Stone, and he was eventually castrated by her. MH’s ego and influence has weakened the show badly, because we get fewer interesting cases and more Benson worship, agenda pushing and soapy melodrama.

hey, we don’t call her ‘saint olivia’ for nothing!

In the past, I was alway secretly happy with these breaks, because sometimes I have trouble to keep on track with all episodes, so I was glad to have some time to catch up. But recently it seems to me that each break is exactly at a time something is happening that I would love to hear Stephen's comments on.

agreed about the unfortunate timing vis a vie the news cycle. and while i do understand the need for the show to take a break now and then, in recent months it seems as though these breaks have been coming far more frequently than in the past — frustrating — even annoying!

Has there been official word that the series is over or were they wrapping things up just in case?

it has been renewed. but yes, it did feel rushed, as though they were wrapping things up just in case — although things probably didn’t need to be wrapped up quite this tight.

I know that this show seems to love portraying the late 50s as if it's the 2000s

yes! same with language. can’t remember which woman it was who last night described sex as ‘transactional,’ which very 21st century, not mid-20th.

Pap smears detect cervical cancer.  He said she had a tumor which would be interuterine and not detectable with a pap smear.

also possible that it could be fibroids.

So, to continue the drama and angst, does it mean Will may start a relationship with Bonnie and then Maya shows up pregnant?

    please, please… please — no!

Isn't Jon supposed to be filming The Color Purple?

i don’t think they’ve started filming yet. and if they had, i expect stephen would have said something. i’m more concerned that jon’s protracted absence is because his wife is not doing well.

Anyone else think that "Circle Game" was just a little too on the nose as a song choice given the sidewalk chalk and the 4 Square and the Pin the Tail on The Donkey?

as i said up thread: i thought the entire episode was more than a little too on the nose.

Maybe I'm just an asshole. Or maybe it was the mood I was in or my expectations, but I spent a lot of this episode being annoyed instead of sad. Mostly over the Marcus family business and how she basically just ran by Miguel on the train. And that stupid lemonade out of lemons thing was cringey for me.

    let’s sit together.

    on the nose (otn):

“representing someone or something with indelicate or awkward directness; lacking subtlety or nuance.”

I'm not sure what you're referring to as "on the nose", but the phrase itself doesn't have to represent something negative.  It just means accurate.

i’m a writer, and if i get a note that says ‘on the nose,’ it’s not praising my accuracy; it means write it again with subtlety and nuance, which this episode sorely lacked, in case the subtext of my comment wasn’t clear.

Other then shitty writing this show being centred on Darlene is one of its biggest problems. She’s a horrible stupid woman.

Ok, agreed but it's the character, not the person.  I thnk Sara Gilbert is not so much of a lame brain as Darlene.

yeah… but sara gilbert is an executive producer, so she does have a lot to say about her character.

Logistically, having friends requires hiring other actors and creating stories about or including those characters.

there are certainly logistical issues with storylines and economic concerns with how many actors per episode. so, yes, it’s a real issue, with no easy solution — particularly when the lead characters are as entitled and self-absorbed as the pearsons. there’s no one to call them on their shit. i had the same problem with the bravermans on parenthood.

Anyone have an idea why they had Toby and Kate adopt their daughter? I thought it was odd that they were picked, not so much because of Chrissy's weight, that shouldn't impede but I thought as a mom, her having a child so young with a disability that needed a lot of time and learning, they wouldn't be my top pick. They rarely show her or interact with her or even mention her in passing. I just feel with breaking them up and the show ending, was it for something Dan thought of after? Maybe a spinoff?

yeah — logic. looking for it gives me a headache.

It’s at the 59 minute mark, separate from the “kids confess on the couch” scene earlier. They were all together in bed, kids sleeping, and Rebecca says it was the best anniversary gift - her kinds banding together to protect one another. Jack says he wants her “better” gift early at Christmas.

thanks — for some reason i thought it came earlier in the episode. seeing it only reinforces my ‘being careful what you wish for.’ her comment that this was a seminal moment — and in a good way — speaks volumes about why the big three are so fucked up.

  16. might be losing my mind here.

but i remember a scene after jack and rebecca talk with the kids about locking the babysitter with the whole family in bed and rebecca saying about happy she was that the kids stuck up for each other. i thought to myself ‘be careful what you for.’ i wanted to know exactly what she said before commenting, so i watched the episode on hulu — went through it frame-by-frame — and CANNOT FIND THAT SCENE.

    anyone have any thoughts?

It's great that Jon is getting so much recognition, but is he going to be content continuing his day job as Stephen's sidekick, instead of focusing full-time on his solo career?

I'm wondering that myself. In a little over a year, the guy has won an Oscar and now 5 Grammys. I can't see him staying with the show forever.

I hope he stays for a long time. Questlove has been with Jimmy Fallon forever, and he's in a similar situation, as an Oscar and Grammy winner. Maybe having a steady gig in a house band gives them the freedom to do more creative projects. 🤞

true enough about the freedom a steady gig provides. but a steady gig also provides flexibility. if jon needs time off to care for his wife, finding a musician to stand in — especially in nyc — is a lot less complicated than cancelling/rescheduling dates if he’s on tour and something happens.
