then when MIT was talking about their non-denominational church -- the way she took her hat off and the look she gave George was top-notch non-verbal acting.

I'd forgotten that was MIT. So Mary probably prayed about it and now believes her prayers were answered. To be fair, I think a storm of that magnitude is referenced as an "act of God" in many homeowner insurance policies.

here’s link to some photographs of the non-denominational mit chapel. it was designed by eero saarinen, who also designed the saint louis arch.

it is a peaceful, and truly spiritual place

  2. i wasn’t paying attention to the guest credits, and i couldn’t find anything at imdb or online, but i’m pretty sure that daniel davis (niles on the nanny) played the older plastic surgeon. can anyone confirm?

Isn’t there some sort of conflict of interest with Harris providing food to the college?  You’d think that they would have some food service company delivering food to the college for the cooks to prepare.

the whole premise is beyond stupid. there’s no functioning management structure in place for food service at a community college? please!

but, like virtually everything else on this show: examine the details too closely and the whole thing falls apart like a cheap sweater.

  4. i also loved this episode. this second season, i think the writers didn’t know what to do with will and angie, so the storytelling’s felt disjointed. things seem to be coming together.

but, i still don’t understand why they decided to kill off cricket. i understand that susan kelechi watson wasn’t going to become a regular, but why kill her? cricket and will had incredible chemistry. and while he was initially devastated by her death, he certainly seems to have gotten over it. it would be one thing, if his pain was going to play out over the season; since it’s not, why squander the possibility that she could return? don’t get it.

  5. i have to say, with the exception of the in memoriam (while bad, i’ve seen worse), it was a good show: minimal mindless banter between presenters; only one over-the-top production number, which was a lot of fun; the tequila bit with the audience was mercifully short, as were the acceptance speeches — did anyone get played off?

i mentioned upthread that i thought they might have taken a page from the writerless tony award show and realized that less really is more.

now, if they could just crack the in memoriam…

  6. haven’t seen ‘killers of the flower moon.’’

but, while i’ve only made through half of ‘poor things’ — struck me as weird for the sake of being weird, and i’m not sure i’ll finish watching — it’s hard not to admire emma stone’s performance.

Forced banter, is there anything better?

could really have lived without the forced banter between melissa and octavia and now emily and ryan.

but, there’s been far less this year — maybe those in charge remember what a pleasure it was to watch last year’s tonys compared to previous year.

ymmv, but i really like the individual introductions of the acting nominees.

I have to say I was a bit cautious with this one cause Elsbeth's character can be a bit too much, but I really enjoyed the first episode.
And I wouldn't mind guest appearances from the Good Wife/Fight universe.
I mean, there is a certain lawyer lady that now works in NY, right?

I hope they can keep it fresh because, like others, I'm a little concerned that all-Elsbeth all the time may get draining

Last night Stephen was unhappy that a big news story was expected today, when there is not a new LSSC scheduled for tonight.  What would it take to produce a new show with a day or two notice?  Probably not every staff member would be able to participate, but some could (given extra overtime pay).

might be a challenge to book an audience on such short notice.

I seem to remember in the previous episode Capote commenting on Tenneseee Williams...something to the effect of he (Capote) being better than Williams. Sounded like sour grapes. Williams was more prolific and successful than Capote even if they both had messy ends

capote was actually commenting on an episode of ‘family,’ a show that ran on abc in the late 70s.

what he said was that the show was so well written tennessee would be jealous. then noted that the characters all loved each other no matter how badly they behaved.

‘family’ was one of my favorite shows, so i was fascinated and wondered if this is something capote actually said.

  11. overall a pretty good show. moved right along, although anthony anderson’s mother got old fast.

loved the reunions — proving that less is indeed, often more.

    great in memoriam.

and while the lucy sketch may not have quite worked, it put me in mind of something la times critic, mary mcnamara, noted re the overwhelming amount of streaming content:

“Trying to keep up makes any normal person feel like Lucy and Ethel shoving chocolates down their shirts in that famous candy factory scene from “I Love Lucy.”

We all stopped trying to keep up long ago. Which is a problem. Does the Marvel universe truly expand if no one is there to watch it?”

  12. note to the upcoming oscars:

this is what a well done in memoriam looks like: a beautiful musical performance that didn’t detract from celebrating those who have passed, whose faces and names we could both see and read.

Question: did they extend the voting period as well due to the strike or did they still have everyone vote over the summer and just put the ballots in a drawer?

according to the ny times, the voting took place in august and the results have been locked up until tonight.

  14. hard to believe that andre braugher is gone — and that reading through all of the roles he played over 30 years, i just this minute remembered his turn on svu.

and beyond ironic that his character defended the brain-damaged football player portrayed by the late treat williams.

I think it's a little bit of both (unplanned absences and the desire to avoid creating a possible succession controversy) although I would like to point out that Jimmy Kimmel has used guest hosts.

kimmel takes off the entire summer, so guests hosts are scheduled in advance. little different when a host is suddenly unavailable.

wonder what happened back in the day if carson was sick?
