I deliberately didn't watch when Marlena was possessed by the Devil because I thought the idea of it was soooo dumb and campy. Wasn't Passions airing around the same time? Maybe DOOL decided well - it's working for Passions (the stupid talking doll plot) so let's get our own campy storyline.

Passions started in 1999, after the Possession Storyline. My guess would be that James E Reilly was given the opportunity to create a new show due to the ratings that were generated by Marlena’s possession.

I think it was actually a little more than 25 years ago.  The devil just rounded down. 😁 If my memory serves me correctly, it was late '94 and into '95.

The DougDemon said, “It’s been over 25 years, Marlena,” but you’re correct about the years (late ‘94- mid ‘95) of the original storyline.

He just constantly oozes this gross smugness. Like what was that today with Abigail and Chad. His manipulation was so unsmooth and obvious and I was glad Abigail called him out on it.

He’s behaving like a shameless asshole at the moment.  But when he first came back to Salem he was trying to make amends with Sami and repair their broken relationship.  He was making a genuine effort at being a “good” person.  So, I like that his rage at Sami having sex with Lucas is just bleeding into every aspect of his life.  It’s like he can’t help but torch everything around him that could be a source of support at this time.  His fight with Xander was such a necessary outlet for his inner turmoil that he’s refusing to deal with.

How interesting that John found his old priest box with the Bible, the priest collar and a newspaper article about Marlena's possession.

I was so mad that John wouldn’t move his hand out of the way.  I was able to read the first paragraph of the article and I was intrigued about the rest.

LOL!  Love that!  But Kristin going on and on about The Signs from The Scrolls was one of my favorite parts of the cheesy-ness.

Possessed Marlena gets to levitate again. Why they bothered I don't know - it looks like reused footage from the 1st time. No new twist? Meh.

How is it the same footage?  There are plenty of differences from the original levitation scene.  The bedroom, her pajamas, her foot positioning, and her hand right hand was clearly resting on her stomach in the original.  Why would they bother reusing old footage when it could be easily computer-generated with today’s technology?

Wow, EJ and Nicole.  I didn’t think they’d actually be smart enough to go there.  At least that’s one thing to look forward to.  I should probably stop reading this thread again.

  5. At least they could have made reference to the upcoming Lunar Eclipse.  That was the Big Moment the Demon was waiting for in his plot to take Marlena’s soul, kill Father John Black and destroy Salem, USA.  Perhaps the Demon has become more efficient and no longer relies on the signs from The Scrolls?

Doug saying he locked that bitch in the freezer on purpose was hilarious.

I don’t hate the idea of the Demon coming back for Marlena.  It was determined to destroy her and everyone around her.  But while there was a campiness to the original story, there were plenty of strong character moments that were influenced by the Demon’s plot, and I don’t see how the Show has anything currently set-up that could compare.  I’m only slightly optimistic that this will be true Guilty Pleasure Viewing.

Also, I will totally miss Father Francis!

  6. Lindsay Arnold’s boobs looked HUGE in the tight white shirt.  I thought maybe she had something done but then I found some old pics where they looked almost as big.

Oh Doug, how wicked thou art!  I wonder what’s gotten into him.

Did Alyson Sweeney’s exit cause a funk in the Writer’s Room?  The Show has felt about as boring as my own life since Sami’s kidnapping. And they’re paying people to write this snoozefest?  Where did I go wrong?

It appears as though it’s from this article about how Ben and Ciara are an “It” couple in some realm of our bizarre Universe.  There are several pics of Ben and Ciara interspersed throughput the article.  If you scroll down, you can find the pic of Ben and Ciara mimicking Doug and Julie, although without Doug and Julie’s pic in the frame.

Also, is there a reason they hired an actress who resembles Bonnie/Adrienne?

The Writers tried to make it seem like Adrienne had come back from the dead during Calista’s first scene, so that was probably the only reason.

As soon as Julie explained that Doug had locked her in the freezer, all I could think about was how loudly @boes was cheering.

At least Xander knows that Bonnie was in his hotel room.  His presence in this storyline is the only reason I’m not FF-ing this Calista/Bonnie StinkFest.  If only Calista would shoot Bonnie and Xander would shoot Calista...but the Show doesn’t like us to have nice things.

Watching live. Able to skip Cin by Watching commercials

The commercials for the insurance companies  are definitely more entertaining than the Ciara/Ben nonsense.  Those two twits reading Shakespeare to each other is worse than nails on a chalkboard.

Mixed feelings about the mess with Bonnie.  I like the idea of someone’s troubled past coming back to haunt them when they’ve finally reached a sweet spot in life, but Bonnie is so annoying and Calista is suuuch a cartoon.  And yet, Calista almost makes me chuckle at times, and I’m slightly intrigued by Bonnie trying to steal Xander’s money.

Gwen keeping secrets was more interesting when Abigail was there to make it seem like Jack was stuck in the middle of the two.  Since Abigail had left, it’s like the Writers have been gotten bored with another of their own storylines.  Just please, please, please have Gwen tell the whole truth and put this stinker to bed.  pffft

    Doesn’t Finn work anymore?

If Sheila could manipulate her way into a job at the hospital, it could be a fun way for her to weasel her way into Finn’s life.  Sheila faking fainting is mildly amusing but this story seems pretty basic, so far.  Other than giving Sheila a “Forrester” grandchild, the Writers haven’t done anything surprising or clever.

  12. Johnny asking for money at least makes some sense.  He’s probably been given most of what he’s ever wanted at this point in his life.  EJ being such an ass about makes less sense to me.  The only thing I can think of is that EJ is taking his rage at Sami out on Johnny.  Did Stefano make EJ quit being a race car driver?

What the hell is a Calista Lockhart?  I was surprised when I Googled her and was informed that the actress is a Tony Award winner.  I thought her first couple scenes were awful, although it didn’t help that they involved Bonnie.  I think I was able to watch her last scene without a horrible screaming sound in my head.

Sounded like someone watched the McMillions documentary.  That was how Monopoly scratch-off scam worked.

So Allie really does have romantic feelings for Chanel?  Otherwise, I’m confused as to why Johnny “dating” Chanel is a big, dramatic moment.

Now it's just a show about rich, horny people.

Perhaps this explains why Eric is so devastated by his erectile dysfunction.  He's losing his identity, lol.

Does anyone know who was the first person to be slapped by Stephanie?  I've seen quite a few Stephanie slaps while I've been watching all of the old Sheila scenes.  The earliest one I could find claimed to be from January of 1988, when she slaps Ridge.

This one says May of 1988 for Brooke...

  14. While I understand all of Steffy's concerns about Sheila, and her vitriol was warranted, I was really hoping Finn would stand up for himself a little more than he did.  He just stood there and took all of her ranting.  Perhaps it was a smart move on his part.

It was funny to hear Steffy foam at the mouth about how well she knows the How and Why of Sheila's machinations, which is exactly how you challenge Sheila to a duel, if you really know who you're dealing with.  Lauren and Stephanie have both come at Sheila in a similar manner, and it didn't go well for either of them.

Although Sheila looked like she quite enjoyed that slap. The glee in her snake eyes was palpable.

That slap was a "Game On!" for Sheila.  Honestly, I think Sheila has been bored since her attempt to reclaim Eric back in 2017.  Steffy was right in saying that Sheila thrives on trouble, and this is exactly what Sheila needs to feel revitalized.

  15. The weird thing about Gabi is that she had become a mostly fun character, and it seemed Camila Banus had grown as an actress.  Then they sent her off, and she’s been mostly annoying since her return.  The scenes with Abigail and kidnapping Gwen were fun but the rest of it...not so much.  I hate that this plot to take over Titan makes her look like a moron.

I appreciated Steve being kind to Ava.  I don’t see how holding a grudge against someone is beneficial in any way, shape or form.  It does feel like it came out of nowhere but I can fill in the blanks and say that Ava and Tripp have developed a strong relationship, and Tripp has conveyed that to Steve.  But, good grief, Ava revealed her living form because she wanted a relationship with Tripp and now they rarely share scene together.  Is it really that difficult for Those Writers! to remember their own storylines?

Please let Nicole get romantically involved with EJ or Xander while she’s on this break from Rafe.  He’s a wet blanket to every fiery female on the Show.

Good grief, who is back from the dead now?  I’m not feeling like it’s Adrienne.  Did Bonnie kill someone while I wasn’t watching?  Oh, I’m so tempted to look at the Spoiler thread.

Who did/does Sheila hate more Lauren Fenmore or Stephanie?

I think she hates/hated them both with every fiber of her being.  By my count, Sheila tried to kill Stephanie at least one more time than she tried to kill Lauren, if that counts for anything.  They were both condescending and antagonistic to her before they knew who they were dealing with.  One could argue that Lauren had cause, because she was pretty sure that Sheila was after Scott, but Stephanie was an insufferable snob and an outright bitch to her for no other reason than that's how Stephanie operates.

The Devony Dixon story was all right, but isn't on the level of the BeLief story. This was in 1993, I believe.

Oh, I was mostly being playful about Deveney Dixon.  The premise with Stephanie having a secret child hidden away for years was silly but I think Deveney was the first of William J Bell's malevolent villains for the show, which was a fun change of pace at the time.  At least I enjoyed her.  The BeLief storyline was something we watched develop for years.  It was a very exciting "win" for Brooke.

Hayes’ reaction speaks for all of us regarding his daddy’s stupidity.

I don't disagree about Finn's level of intelligence but I thought those scenes were written well enough to demonstrate that he was being manipulated into acting against his own best judgement.  Even when Jack was practically threatening him to allow Sheila to see Hayes, he stood his ground.  And, there was still a reluctance in his voice after Sheila told him things he had wanted to hear all of his life.

Everything is a game for Sheila, and people function primarily as pawns to get her what she wants or obstacles for her to overcome.  I loved her laying on the charm with Finn and pushing all of the emotional buttons that were necessary to achieve the goal of holding her grandchild.  While, previously, she had threatened to destroy Jack's marriage if she didn't get her way.  That smirk on her face at the end was so fun, and a knowing sign that she had bested Steffy with little effort.

Kudos to John McCook for tearing up while Eric was talking about his erectile dysfunction.  I couldn't help but chuckle through the entire scene, mostly because it's so ridiculous that a man of his wealth couldn't just call his doctor to resolve the issue.

Someone has posted a multitude of B&B Shiela scenes on YouTube, so I feel like I've just taken a refresher course on how Sheila operates.  Hopefully, it will help me to fill in the blanks if the writing for this storyline is as mediocre as 2017's Summer of Sheila.

I thought it was ridiculous the other day that John and Marlena were wringing their hands over EJ and Sami's marriage. All of them - Roman included - should be elated their daughter's marriage to her rapist hit the skids.

I read those scenes as them being concerned for Sami’s mental well-being, as Sami has spent years looking for EJ and nursing him back to health.  They know Sami well enough to realize that a break-up isn’t going to sit well with her.  Why would they be elated that their daughter may experience some degree of heartbreak?

Rafe is an idiot, so it’s not totally surprising that he didn’t take Ava up on her open invitation to end their relationship.  And while I kept hoping for Ava to do something awful, I did appreciate that the characters were allowed to have an adult conversation.

I loved Kate going to Philip and trying to talk some sense into him.

And even Chloe got to use her brain and question Brady’s motivation.

Today was a good day for realistic character interactions.

Love KB’s hair, so full and thick.

It looked better today than the past few days.  Does the Show provide hair and makeup for the actors or is it like DAYS, where they have to fend for themselves?

Interesting speculation about Eric possibly conning Quinn with the erectile dysfunction reveal.  I couldn't figure out why the hell he wouldn't just call his doctor and get some of those little blue pills.

I've been deliberating on whether Sheila really is a threat to Finn. So, I've been trying to recall what her relationship with Mary was like, and I found this little fun scene during my trip down a Sheila Rabbit Hole today...

    https://youtu.be/19tFbOUGX3k

Sheila isn't above using her children as a means to an end but I still think she loves them, and I don't think Finn is in any real danger from Sheila.  I'd say she already loves Hayes with all of her heart, and he's likely safe from her machinations at least until he's old enough to talk.

I'd forgotten that Ridge tried to strangle Sheila, and it took a number of prison guards to pull him off of her.  He may of killed her, so he's not completely above Sheila's capacity for criminal behavior.

  20. Please don't go back to Florida, Olivia!  We need you!  Don't mind me and my little tantrum that Marla Gibbs isn't sticking around.  I love her snark!

I like the idea of Gwen and Xander but today I felt that brother/sister chemistry that some of you have talked about more than I have in their past scenes.

I'm still not on the Chanel/Allie/Tripp bandwagon, mostly because I think it's a waste of Chanel's time but I liked Allie revealing to Marlena that she felt like she needed to resolve her feeling for Chanel and say "I love you" to Tripp.  Almost like she feels pressure to conform to a model of a traditional family.

Carson Boatman continues to impress me as Johnnie.

Is Bradley Bell punishing his script writers and actors?  How many days in a row does Steffy need to tell Finn not to interact with Sheila?  And then Brooke and Ridge need to have a pointless conversation about her, too?  Ugh.  I remember when this show could juggle multiple compelling storylines at a time.

  22. While Steffy’s concerns about Sheila are valid, it’s so condescending the way she talks to Finn like he’s not smart enough to make decisions for himself.  Does that mean she sees him as dumb and pretty?

I thought Jack was kinda stupid for coming to Sheila to makes threats.  Like that’s the last thing you want to do with Sheila, make her think you’d like to engage her in some kind of battle.  But maybe Jack doesn’t know her that well?  Then some old man interrupted the show, so I guess I’ll have to watch the end of the episode On Demand to see what transpired.

It was nice of The Writers to have Shelia interact with an actual human (Jack), rather than her phone and her lap top.  Where the heck is Mary?  She can’t talk to one of her children on the phone about their new brother?

You don't get a 2nd chance to make a 1st impression. Although Lucas Adams has played the role of Tripp far longer than the role he played on the Disney show Liv & Maddie, I still think of him as "Josh" before I think of Tripp.  (Yes, blame my kids for yet another DOOL actor I first saw on a kiddie show)

I watched Cady McClain as Jennifer more in the mindset of Rosanna Cabot being in Salem, USA and married to Jack Devereux. It was probably the main reason McClain’s portrayal of Jennifer didn’t bother me at all.

The show is only interested in writing Sami as a bad neglectful mother and her kids hating her. It is so tiresome and lazy.

I don’t see Sami as a bad, neglectful mother, and I think Alison Sweeney has always been convincing at having a strong love for her children, but I can see why any, or all, of her children have personality conflicts with her.  Sami is a narcissist to her core, and those are difficult personalities to deal with, likely being all the more challenging to have one as a mother.  Not to mention the number of times she uprooted them in her quest to find EJ.  It would be nice if Johnnie is enough like Sami that he has less conflicts with her than Allie does/did.  Actually, I’m a little disappointed the writers have sidelined Allie and Sami’s thorny relationship.

EJ, Chad and Johnnie having a little family meeting DiMera-style was good fun.  Dan Feuerriegel is kinda scary as Pissed Off EJ.

I feel bad for Lucas Adams.  He was doing some good work when he first returned but whining around about whether Allie likes him or not seems so boring.  It’s definitely boring to watch.

Thank you, Theo, for taking Claire with you.  I hope you don’t have to listen to her talk about Ben and Ci-Air-A all of the time.  XOXO
