Meh episode.. Did like zari and amaya in the in between... Not enuff wally... Too much Damien... Wonder what the secret about ava is.. Probably somebody's kid... Felicity and Ollie?

Don't even put that out into the Arrowverse!

  2. Meh...too much Darhk, not enough Team Legends.

Rip, you know why people aren't exactly happy to see you? Because your LACK of communication usually has horrible consequences! What's so bad about Ava that you had to delete a super secret file about her? Sara's seen and done a lot, she can pretty much handle anything at this point. (Unless it involves something like Ava killing Laurel which, in that case, good work Rip).

I was mumbling at my TV, hoping Wally had swiped the totem along with Ray so thanks for making that happen writers. Also, welcome to the team Mr West! Sara's a much better captain than Rip so you made the right choice.

Ray, Nora isn't who you should be catching feelings for. Find someone else...anyone else who isn't possessed by a demon and who's father isn't the worst.

Wally was embellishing when he said Nate described Amaya as a "basic bitch" right? Amaya is neither of those and if Nate really did say that, it'd confirm my feelings about Nate having dudebro tendencies.

I hope Amaya gets her totem back sans-Mallus.

  3. - Ray you big-hearted dope! Why would you not just jab and run?!!!!

    - Okay so Sara & Ava are a thing. I don't mind them and it's nice to see Sara get a little "normal" in her personal life. Btw Ava, Sara is an exceptional dancer (that is, if they ever let Caity Lotz show her skills in that area).

    - Rip isn't a "little bit of a douche" Wally, he's a ginormous one. Don't let the crooning of 'Careless Whispers' In Tokyo, 1992 fool you (that was a nice touch btw).

    - Amaya as a pirate queen was so much fun and watching her pair off with Mick for almost the entire episode was even better! Mick is the best kinda bro to have.

    - The Legends aren't completely incompetent but in their rush to keep Sara on her date, they kept messing up so much lol. Also, Gideon is a little snitch and it's hilarious to watch.

    - So now Damian has both the totem and Ray. Sigh...they never make it easy for our Legends do they?

    Quote

Sara didn’t check on Q because he’s currently kidnapping Laurel’s terrorist doppelgänger in an effort to make her his replacement daughter. Setting all of that straight requires more than a few minutes of an episode.

I haven't watched Arrow in ages. I guess characters being monumentally stupid is still a thing on that show smh.

  4. That was emotional but fun at the same time. Only on Legends do I get that kinda 2-for-1 special. Special mention to the cue cards gag which had me laughing for a solid minute.

Gideon is hilariously devious which matches up perfectly with the team. Last week she was all for setting up Sara and Agent Sharp and tonight she's all about getting through to Zari while having a bit of fun with Gary.

Mick as a budding romance/erotica novelist wasn't something I thought I'd want until tonight. I hope it becomes a best seller when all is said and done lol.

I'm still not fully on board with Nate & Amaya but I've accepted it for what it is now whereas with Sara & Ava, I'm beginning to see why it would work.

Ray is such a good guy. Also, a horrible liar.

That turned out to be a bit of an emotional roller coaster, didn't it? It actually managed to hit quite a few of the Groundhog Day points of being caught in a time, in just an hour. We had the "what the heck is happening, am I crazy?" bit, followed by frustration, followed by "YOLO",followed by suicidal despair, followed by becoming a better person and helping people (including catching a falling person and learning a musical instrument) followed by a declaration of love that finally breaks the time loop. Platonic love this time, which honestly makes the whole thing even sweeter. I knew Zari would be fine, but I still got emotional when she gave her speech about how much she loves her team, and how she wants to save them.

There have been times when I wanted Sara to thump her because of her constant rule-bending especially at the beginning of tonight's episode but she won me over with that monologue. Now if she can just stop sneaking behind Sara's back, I'll be a happy camper.

  5. De-lurking because once again, TAR went to my home country! (I miss it a lot). Even though they mostly stuck to a lot of shots of the landscape and animals (which is fine because that's a big part of what makes Zimbabwe beautiful), I had a good chuckle once I realised the tasks they had to do in the main part of Harare or the CBD as they call it. That area is always full of people, to the point that it becomes almost difficult to drive through so I know that when they performed at Harare Gardens, by the time all the teams were there, they probably gathered quite the crowd. One of these days I'm going to need TAR to go to Kariba or the Eastern Highlands if they come back to Zimbabwe, there's a lot of neat challenges they could do there.

How long do you think it took the producers to teach some of the team members how to say Zimbabwe correctly?

Longer than it took them to teach them how to say Harare...

It's 4/4, but like a lot of sub-Saharan popular music, it's syncopated so the accents are on the "off" beats, which means that if you're attuned to songs where the phrasing lines up with the "on" beats, you're going to get out of sync very quickly. (There's also some triplet stuff there, I think.)

On 09/02/2018 at 6:25 PM, Shades of Scarlet said:

Yeah, no, it's straight 4/4 all the way, but as mentioned the beat is highly syncopated, and also, on the version you linked  (great find, BTW!!), the two different guitar parts are asymmetric and completely distinct from one another, which draws the listener's ear and confuses the beat.  But I think there was only one guitarist in the band and he wasn't that prominent in the mix, so the teams may not have had that excuse.

On 09/02/2018 at 10:29 PM, etagloh said:

Yep. If you "1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and" the rhythm, then you need to recognise that the vocals go on the "ands" and adapt to that.

Following up on my inquiry about whether or not the song the racers had to sing had an unusual beat, which I think only I care about: A few music theory people in this thread think it is a mixed-metric song, which is harder to follow along than your usual pop song. The fact that there is no consensus answer tells me it's a complicated song. Again, you can listen to the song again here - it's been in my head for days now.

Since I'm very familiar with the language and the music, if I was one of the instructors, I would've told them to focus on the cadence of the singer not so much the music/instruments. Usually the instruments, even the drums which usually give you the beat, are used as embellishments to what the singer is doing. Since the accents tend to drop on the off beats more than on the beat, listening to the lead singer the most would've been the easiest way to stay on track.

  6. Since everything I wanted to say has already been said, I'll just add:

    - Gideon's cheek throughout the episode was hilarious.

    - A Mallus-possessed Sara Lance would not be good news for time and the universe. Let's stop that from happening please.

Ah I missed this show, so glad it's back.

Two women pairing up is not much of a teamup. Kara has teamed up with women before. (not to mention Alex+Maggie)

To me that doesn't make much sense. She's still a pretty good big bad. Why would you care for her less just because they added stuff on top of that? Is it really that different from Damian Darkh and his daughter? Or Merelyn and his daughter? Villains having a daughter as their is weakness is hardly unusual.

Which is probably why you don't watch it ;) I don't find this structure that unusual. It's not like Joe or Iris or Caitlyn are super well used in every Flash episode. (though I do agree that this season is particularly bad in regards to characters just missing episodes without any reason for it and many storylines feeling choppy as a result (what happened to J'onn's father again? He was randomly among the people worrying about Kara in the Christmas episode and poof, he's gone again). And one can't really blame that on the Legion since he randomly disappeared between 3 and 7 without the Legion being in town.

    - Again, there's only been two females in the cast before this season so unless I'm forgetting someone, any time they paired up it was a teamup based on what you originally said. Never disagreed with Supergirl not using an all-female teamup either. I disagreed with the notion that Legends ONLY did it for the Helen episode.

    - Yes because Darkh's daughter hasn't been brought in for the sole purpose of eventually being adopted by Sara/Amaya/Zari (take you pick).

    - I don't watch the Flash so I'll take your word for it. Unevenness can only be excused for so long before a show becomes silly. This show is close to it. I also didn't blame the Legion at all so I'm not sure where you're coming from with that?

My original point in all of this was, the cast is too big for the writers on this show who, on average, are middling at best. I don't expect high level writing on any CW show but when a cast becomes too bloated with a writing team that isn't top notch, it'll affect everything from top to bottom. How do you fix that? By eliminating the characters that the very same writing team can't be bothered to write properly for any more.

I'll go back to lurking now :)

Isn't that more a question of contracts running longer? I just assumed that because of that is is just easier for showrunners to keep people around.

Considering that this show was specifically supposed to be about a girl teamup and they brought back two guest stars because of it, I'm not really sure how representative it really is of a normal episode.

I also don't see why only being around till the end of the season means you can't have a meaningful story. I really enjoyed M'gann's story and she was around for half a season. Brainy already got one excellent episode in the dream with Kara, so even if he was gone forever from then on, it still would have made his presence worth it. In the end the show is about Kara and giving her people to interact with.

Astra was also never going to stick around permanently, but still her story was quite moving to me. I count on Reign being the same. I fully expect her to sacrifice herself by the end of the season, since this episode brought up the topic of believing in people and Livewire sacrificing herself. Sam is far from my favorite character and imo some of her introduction has been botched (for example: I don't buy the friendship between Sam and Kara whatsoever), but I could picture that end still being pretty moving.

I watch Legends too, but are teamups of 3-4 women only really that frequent? Camelot with Stargirl and Guinevere maybe? No others really jump to mind.

No idea how their contracts work but it wouldn't be the first time a show has let go of a regular because it just wasn't working.

Sure, shorter character arcs can have meaningfulness but again, Reign was brought in to do two things: be the big bad (nothing wrong with that) and hand over her teenage daughter to Alex (awful, awful idea). Had she just been a big bad, I'd have some form of investment but that isn't her sole purpose and thus, I don't see the need to care about her human (?) side. We can agree to disagree here, I just find myself unable to care about a lot of the characters on this show now, new and old and that's down to uneven writing, characterisation and plotting since Season 2.

There haven't been three women on the cast up until 3x03. Before that, Sara & Kendra and Sara & Amaya paired up all the time. Veering off-show here but again, I disagree with them only pairing the female characters together for one episode because the male characters were affected in one way or the other, as it has happened before.

  9. 12 hours ago, tinnefoil said:

I really, really hate that so far every time there was a girl team up, there had to be a reason. On Flash it was because it was a Bachelorette party, on Legends it was because Helen’s power affected the men and now on Supergirl it’s because of magic anti Y chromosome radiation (why do Daxamites and Martians and Coluans all have Y chromosomes btw?). I think that’s why I dug Amaya, Zari and Killer Frost teaming up for their little rescue in the crossover. Because there was no reason for why it was all women. They just had enough female cast and those just happened to be the most capable people at hand and they just happened to be all women by accident. Rather than there needing to be a reason why they team up (for the record, I’m not counting Iris and Felicity saving Kara because the reason this team up exists is because they are being victimized/because as wives/girlfriends they were left out of the normal action)

I'm going to have to jump in and defend the only CW/DC show that knows how to write for a team/cast. Legends always pairs up the team in various combinations, the Helen episode was not the only time there's been a girl team up. Her power also didn't affect Stein (wipes a tear away).

First episode of Supergirl I've seen in awhile (trying to give it another shot) and...sigh, this show continues to be infuriating. I know showrunners hate doing this but if you have no use for regulars any more, get rid of them! I feel for Mehcad Brooks but he should've been off the show as early back as Season 2, that's how badly they've misused him. Same applies to Winn and J'onn. If you weren't sure what exactly you were going to do with Lena, why did you make her a regular? So you could add her to the rest of the cast you've sidelined?

Reign would interest me more if I didn't know that she'd be dead by the end of the season so Alex can adopt the teenager. I have no reason to invest any time over her.

Legion is...whatever. Irma and Brianiac are fine but the overall arch with them is how I feel about Reign/Sam. They're essentially plot devices unless I missed some cast news and they'll be sticking around past the season finale. If I have, feel free to correct me.

While the “I’m not leaving you” may have been unearned, I disagree that Nico’s feelings came out of absolutely nowhere. The actresses have pointed out in interviews that there are several little looks and touches between them (like Nico brushing Karolina’s hair back while talking about her powers, or... anything in that scene where they’re getting dressed, like Karolina lacing her fingers with Nico’s and helping her put her ring on — I mean, come on, who needs help putting a ring on?). I’d also buy that Nico has been at least considering it since Karolina almost confessed to her in her room; the look on her face suggested she knew Karolina was talking about her, and even Gert, without hearing a word of the conversation, picked up on the tension in the room. That said, yeah, the buildup was subtle, maybe too subtle considering that many fans didn’t see it coming. I do have to wonder if people would have picked up on it if one of the girls had been a guy, though.

Yeah that was a pretty big clue for me. A few of those lines definitely had some innuendo and just before Gert & Molly walked in, you could see the realisation on Nico's face. They could've been more obvious about it but when I did my re-watch just yesterday, I saw the little hints they had put in there.

Just so I'm clear on this, Jonah needs Victor for the box thingy right especially now that his skin is peeling again? I thought the parents kept saying this is the last time blah, blah, blah so why would Jonah need Victor (before he discovered that he needed to re-up his skincare routine)?

  11. Frank's little display in the "Private Room" was nauseating. Now you decide to care about your daughter again?

So Leslie has a weakness, her daughter. Jonah will definitely use that even more in the future if he finds out about this little coup she's staging.

Can someone explain to me why Geoffrey thought it'd be a good idea to accuse the kids of murder? How is that any safer than trying to track them down by themselves?

Poor Amy died for nothing. Leslie should watch her back because Tina will never forgive and forget this.

I wonder what's in the hole?

Old Lace! Good to see you hanging around.

So Karolina must be a whole lot stronger than I thought if her blast made Jonah start to revert back into an old man again.

Alex, making deals with Darius is not smart but I appreciate you trying to get some money for the gang. While you were gone your girl moved on though...

Random note: the two church ladies are probably the creepiest people on the show.

And thus ends Season 1. I liked it and I'll be back for more in Season 2.

    • Love 1
  12. Frank is either incredibly gullible (plausible) or Jonah gave him a personality transplant (equally plausible).

The teenagers did the teenager stuff at a school dance. Not entirely surprising but Gert's little meltdown at the construction site was side-eye worthy. Of all the times to decide to pick a fight over sex...

I like how at the end all the parents were taken aback by seeing how much their kids know. Leslie's last statement has me worried about how Jonah will react to Karolina's powers? DNA? She seemed more worried for Karolina than angry at her.

Tina may not know how to show her emotions clearly but she truly does love her daughter(s).

Interesting little note, Jonah seemed to appreciate Stacey fighting back but had pure disdain for Dale's cowardice.

  13. That certainly ramped up the drama of this season and left so many little plot points for the next 2-3 episodes to tie up. I'm completely invested in this show now and what exactly will be the tipping point for the Runaways to...run away with everything going on right now.

Isn't Janet super smart? Could she not look at Victor's schematics or something and make a new light box thingy?

Chase using his 1-2 days of bliss with his dad to make it seem like he should give a chance is weird but not unexpected from a kid. I'd like to know how he feels about his mother in all of this because at every point of this show, he always focused on his dad and not his mother.

Robert is useless. His only saving grace is how kind he was to Nico at a time when her mother became cold to deal with the grief of losing her eldest (speaking of Amy, I'm guessing Jonah was the one in her house at the end of the episode). Tina pretty much controls everything else and he should be very thankful that she seems to genuinely love him because she's not someone I'd ever want to humiliate/cross publicly.

Gert knows about Karolina now but I wouldn't be surprised to see her use this to further her "cause" with Chase. The question is, will Karolina be okay with that? Also: anyone else notice that Old Lace was fine with Karolina walking right by it but didn't appreciate Chase approaching it?

Apart from Tina, I'd say Leslie is the most ruthless of the Pride members. She has affection for Frank but was more than ready to let him die if it meant furthering their plans. Frank is on borrowed time.

Alex didn't tell Nico everything did he? I think he's still hiding something.

I guess Molly's parents died too soon for them to realise that VHS tapes would basically be foreign objects to Molly by the time she got it lol. I did chuckle at her wtf face when she pulled out the tape.

  14. 1 hour ago, CaptainTightpants said:

TBut I can't figure out why on earth Leslie told her husband about her relationship with Jonah. Frank really doesn't seem like a smart guy, I'm sure she could have cobbled something believable together without too much effort. He seems like an enormous liability, I can't imaging why she would give him ammunition.

    I wondered about this too.

Anyone else get an ick feeling seeing Jonah and young Leslie considering their relationship now? Also, could the being Leslie's dad saw be a vision of Karolina and not Jonah like Frank thinks? Not sure how that would be possible but considering the drawing was of Karolina and not of Jonah, I'm leaning towards Leslie covering up the fact that Karolina isn't Frank's daughter when she told Frank that her father saw Jonah as the being.

I know the comic books fans are up in arms about the show delving into the parents so deeply but I'm thoroughly enjoying it. The kids are still...kids and there's only so much entertainment I can get from watching them bumble around being teenagers. The parents are really shining in this show.

Molly is supposed to be what? 13? 14? Are early teens usually that much of an open book or is it just Molly?

So Jonah's blood is like a drug that once you come down from, you return to your original state which in the case of Victor and Dale, is evil?

Alex needs to be put into an interesting storyline. Even when he was kidnapped by his dad's former friends, I was more interested in how his dad would act/react than what Alex was up to. I too would like to know how he figured out the password so quickly Nico. Now if only the show would let us know instead of dragging it out.

Victor is (was?) a horrible guy. I don't blame Janet for taking that final measure to protect herself and her son.

Tina doesn't seem like the type to forgive and forget so I wonder how she'll dole out punishment for Robert's indiscretions.

I like how they're handling Karolina's sexuality -- her realization and acceptance have been fairly subtle (I've seen many fans arguing over whether or not the show was going there up until today, so don't feel bad for having to ask, @kdm07), but realistic. I hope she stops stringing Chase along soon and that she and Gert are all right. I liked that bonding moment they had in an earlier episode and I'd rather see that kind of thing than more girls at each other's throats (especially over a guy... and especially when they're not even both interested in said guy).

I'm glad I wasn't too far behind with that :)

I did a re-watch to see if I could figure out Alex a little more and I think Tina didn't know they were in the office then, that's why she cried. Nico's suspicious of Alex but she might get side-tracked now that she's found out about the affair.

Netflix has spoiled me because when the credits started to roll, I reached out to skip to the next episode then realised there won't be one until next week.

  18. - Alex really is bold to be saying all of that to his father and then flouncing off to the guest house. The guest house belongs to your dad too Alex so if he really wanted to, he could kick you out of there too.

    - So Frank isn't Karolina's dad? Oh boy, how is Leslie going to explain all of that? And what's going on between Karolina and Nico? Is she crushing on her?

    - There's more to this story than Geoffrey not giving Darius' grandma money. I want to know exactly what happened.

    - The dinosaur is cute.

  19. How many emotions can Legends put you through in one episode?

    - Every time the Beebo showed up I was rolling! Especially when it laughed after Mick got punched by the Viking lady. Ray!Beebo was just as hilarious.

    - Darhk's Odin wig was also hilarious. As in, hilariously bad.

    - Leo was...okay for me. I think I'll be happy with having him in small doses. I did enjoy the puppet Stein scenes.

    - Jax, come back! They got me in the feels once again with him leaving then the Christmas party then him saying his final goodbyes to his big sister Sara. I may have been cutting onions at the same time *coughs*

    - "B-list" heroes was harsh Jefferson but I did laugh all the same.

    - Clearly, Agent Ava is not immune to Sara's charms and the potential lover anvils were dropping more today than any other time.

    - Zari really doesn't know who she's messing with when it comes to Sara does she? That's okay, she'll learn one day and never do it again.

    - John Constantine!

Now I have to wait until February for one of my favourite shows to come back. I don't like it.

  20. - So...Kara & Alex are just going to act like the crossover never happened?

    - Writers: putting two people together as a romantic pair is not how you handle not knowing what to do with a character. You first figure out a plausible storyline for that character (the Guardian nonsense was just that, nonsense) then you match them up. James and Lena have been slapped together without much thought and it shows.

    - Maybe Winn should date Reign now so that the writers can skip actually developing him as a character or having him interact with others. Same thing could apply for J'onn but I think we're out of female main characters for him to pair up with.

    - Ruby...should've never showed up.

    - Do not care for Mon-El nor do I care for where is story is going.

    - I had some interest in Reign and the fight was cool but everything about her is being fast-tracked.

This is where I bid Supergirl goodbye. I hope that the writing improves next year for those of you still watching but I've reached the end of my patience with this show.

    9. That said, although Team Legends got off some awesome moments here and got to pause for a character death, they do seem to have a tendency to get isolated in their episodes of these crossovers, don't they? I mean, this is the second year in a row where the Legends crossover episode ends with an Oliver/Barry thing. Happens when you're the last part of the crossover, but still.

*sits in a corner, quietly muttering in agreement with the above while others argue about Barry/Iris & Oliver/Felicity*

Yeahhhh.... I'm just going to talk about the Legends (the only show I regularly watch and care about).

Not enough Legends, not even in the fourth hour, but I liked that Mick was the one Legend who participated in most of the proceedings (other than Sara and Firestorm, of course) and his little connection with Caitlin was surprisingly fun. I just wish we had gotten more of Amaya and Zari, too. That little team-up between them and Killer Frost was amazing though, and I'm really happy the Legends all popped up in the end (especially Ray and Nate) like the badass rescuers, as opposed to the screw-ups.

Victor Garber is a gem, and an incredible actor, and his death scene had me sobbing. He will be missed. But he's also better than this, heh. That said, he did get to have a lot of fun as a performer (to our viewing pleasure) so I'd like to think it was worth it. We (and the CW) were lucky to have him for this long. I really wanted Stein to live and go back to his family, but that would have made his exit a lot less heroic (or should I say "legendary"), so I guess I'm fine with it (she said through her tears).

I'm just glad the show gave us reactions from Jax, Clarissa and Lilly, but also Ray. Ray was always close to "Marty" and I'm glad the writers didn't forget that. Same for Caitlin, actually. So that was good.

Also good? Leo! He was so hilarious and, dare I say, cute? And he's sticking around? Yes please. I loved him with The Ray (and I'm not the biggest fan of Russell Tovey, but even I have to admit I liked him in this). I'm always up for more Wentworth Miller.

One last thing: this entire crossover felt like a concentrated effort to stomp all over the very notion of a Bechdel test. That's why Legends is the only thing I watch. Keep the boyfriend drama out of my shows please.

This. A thousand times all of this but especially the bolded.

  24. Grey :( :( :(

(That's going to take some time to get over)

I don't watch any of the other shows except Supergirl and even that has kinda lost me so I zoned out any time a Legend wasn't on my screen.

I did let out a giant whoop when I saw tiny!Atom stopping the scalpel because I knew the rest of the team wasn't far behind.

As far as crossovers go, better than the last but while this was fun from a "lots of superheroes/comic book heroes all in once place" perspective, I still think the writing needs to be a little tighter next time.

Once again: Grey :( (and poor Jax)

  25. I'm glad I got to see all three episodes at once because things are a lot clearer for me now. I can't decide on which of the kids I like the most right now as we're still digging into their personalities. The parents though, are fun to watch. From what I know of the comics, you don't really get this in depth about the parents but the show decided to do so and I'm happy they did. Tina, Leslie & Catherine are the standouts for me but I do enjoy the weird duo that is the Yorkes (I think that's their surname, Gert's parents).
