The big winner tonight is clearly Crash -- I have a feeling it's about to be replaced as the go to example of terrible Best Picture winners.

Right. I’m all for diversity but it seems the Oscars try too hard to impress who have, shall we say, unsophisticated filmic opinions. Like, just because the movie is about racism or prejudice in the South doesn’t  make it “powerful” or “important”. Blatant pandering brings down the value of the awards just like not recognizing PoC and women altogether.

I must be the only person who wasn't that impressed by Bohemian Rhapsody, and by extension Rami.

Trust me, you weren’t. I felt like Rami gave a career defining performance in a fair to middling film, kind of like Jamie Fox in Ray.

It more than worked out, Rami!  Especially if the rumors were true that you led the charge to get creepy Bryan Singer canned.

I believe that. Rami’s been doing his best to not mention Singer this whole time. Can’t say I blame him.

  3. Congrats to Regina King and Mahershala Ali! For Regina it’s been a long time coming, and Mahershala is out here doing it. Dude just won two years ago and now he’s back at it.

Am I the only one annoyed by Pharrell and his short set? It was kinda funny the first time he did it like five years ago, but it was still a troll. Now it’s a troll and kind of disrespectful. You’re an adult, and you decided to show up to the biggest industry event in entertainment in a camo short set.

If I were the the Oscars, I’d leave him off the invite list.

  4. I agree. No shade to Ariana, but I wish the money they spent on promoting another album by her six months after her last album would’ve gone to another artist. They should’ve made Ari promote Sweetener first, or rerelease it with 3-4 new songs. I guess it worked out, but eh.

I just listened to Pink’s new song. At first it sounds like Pink fronting Mumford & Sons. Then, it starts sounding like fun. I mean, the band. At first I thought Jack Antonoff produced it, but apparently he didn’t. Nate Ruess, lead singer of fun., did co-write it.

It’s a bit of a shrug, to be honest, but I see it doing its job. Pink’s nothing if not consistent.

Why is Hip Hop/Rap even brought up in a conversation about the success of Shallow? Frankly, in my opinion, I can think of many Hip Hop/Rap songs that lyrically destroy many of these "real music" songs. Also people do realize that many of these huge pop songs, even sometimes ballads are produced by some of these Hip Hop/Rap producers right?

I brought up hip-hop/rap because it’s currently the dominant genre in popular music. It was more shorthand for current music that’s popular than hip-hop specifically.

People are starved for music that sounds like music..seriously? Because two movie songs/soundtracks did okay? And yet those not real music songs sure dominated the Billboard charts last year.  And when did Gaga have a countrypolitan makeover, considering she turned Shallow into a rock song for her Grammy performance.

Many songs and albums, especially these days, do numbers solely because of streaming. They talked about that on the NYT Popcast last year. If you take away streams, I believe both of those soundtracks were on the top selling albums list, and with streaming, they were high but not as much.

As far as Gaga, I was referring to her last album Joanne for the most part. She did a rock version at the Grammys...to somewhat mixed reviews.

And yes, no one would be surprised if Adele comes with another big ballad that does crazy numbers, not because again people are so starved for music that sounds like real music but because it's ADELE. It's what she does - release albums with ballads that sell like crazy.

Eh, not necessarily. She’s done that consistently, yes, but I’ve long theorized that Adele is as big as she is because of who her contemporaries are. Adele has a big voice and sings big songs that seem to use real instruments and dresses like a lady. Not all that special — I’ve often thought Adele could be kind of hoary and a bit, well, boring — but bookended up against current pop music, she stands out.

I always find the dismissive comments against Hip Hop/Rap not being "real music" interesting because that's what many said when they declared back in the early 80's, when it was really taking off, that it would go the way of Disco. Have a few years of dominance and die. Yeah how's that going?

Like I said, my comments were more shorthand than hip-hop specific. Those soundtracks are what they are, which is probably why they have done so well. Even your pop acts have to wind up making concessions to hip-hop to get a hit — and not just hip-hop, but trap in particular. Look no further than current number one song “7 Rings” by Ariana Grande where she’s rapping using Soulja Boy’s flow from 2010. Or the muted hip-hop beat of “Without Me” by Halsey that’s at number 3 (not to mention the remix of that song featuring JuceWrld). That’s not always the case, but it’s the unfortunate truth that most mainstream acts have to show some literacy in hip-hop/rap (both in sound and the common tropes) to have consistent chart success. Two mainstream projects they don’t seem belabored by that is refreshing.

  6. I have a messy, vain point to make:

I want Keith Urban to cut his hair. I can’t be the only one.

For one thing, it’s either too long or too short. I could accept it if it was just long — some dudes like long hair. I could accept it if it was just a bit longer than most male country artists. But Keith’s hair is in a sensible bob that hits him right at the shoulders. It’s like he wants to be the long haired cool guy and a well-coifed pretty boy at the same time. Gotta pick one.

Also, he just looks like he saw a picture of Jennifer Anniston one time and was just like, “phbbt, girl please. I can do that”. Or maybe he thinks he’s Andy Brinker and wants to signal he doesn’t need corporate sponsorship. IDK.

I just feel like he needs to cut it. I could take long hair if I felt like it was part of a look, but Keith just looks too old for his hair. A married man with kids north of 35 doesn’t need to cling to the SoCal surfer locks.

I know this is random but for real. It’s annoying.

I guess this is my own UO, but I find "Shallow" to be a really boring song, & I don't understand all the love for it.

I like the song just fine — nothing to write home about — but I think the success of that song, along with the success of the Greatest Showman soundtrack, is because people are starved for music that sounds like music. I don’t know how I feel about Gaga’s Countrypolitan makeover over the last few years, but I do think a lot of people are hip-hopped out. I wouldn’t be surprised if Adele comes out with another big ballad that does crazy numbers for the same reason.

Sadly that is true.  The entertainment industry as a whole is colorist and racist.  They love black music, they just don't love black people performing it (Cardi B and/or Bruno Mars to name a few).

I wonder what’s next for Bruno. I wonder if he’s going to do something fresh and original or if he’s going to Bel Biv Devoe us again. I wouldn’t mind an artist that was an honest throwback to the New Jack Swing era full time — think of how Leon Bridges is a throwback to old school soul — but I am a little tired of the Six Flags R&B Revue type of teas Bruno has been serving since 2nd term Obama. S’time to get a new gig.

Meanwhile Swimming is an album that people will be listening to for the rest of their lives.

I agree, but I will say this is yet another example of hip-hop being full of shit (not you, but a commentary on the culture). When Mac dropped that album, hip-hip barely paid it attention. They were too busy doing that corny ass In My Feelings challenge and following that lame ass beef between MGK and Eminem.

Hip-hop didn’t give Mac Miller his flowers while he was here, but then when the Grammy voters fail to do the same thing, now you see all these people talking about good his project was.
