‘The Rookie’ Aftershow: Eric Winter on Freeway Filming & a Future Chenford ‘Moment’ (VIDEO)

Later in the episode, we saw The Rookie: Feds alums Kevin Zegers and Devika Bhise bring their romantically linked FBI Special Agent Brendon Acres and forensics expert Antoinette Benneteau to the precinct to help with the case, but Winter was not part of the crossover. This time.

“Some [more] people do come in through the season,” he reveals. “I love Felix Solis. I get some stuff with him throughout the season.” In addition, Winter exclusively confirmed that Britt Robertson would also be making her way to the show as Special Agent Laura Stenson. “I get some great scenes with Britt. She’s lovely. She’s a lot of fun. So there are more coming throughout the season where we utilize Feds in the right way and still keep those characters active in our universe… It’s fun.”

“They never broke up because they stopped loving each other. They broke up because Tim didn’t feel he was good enough for her,” he points out. “And I think that’s what the fans have to understand… As a little time has passed, the wound is still there, but it’s healing. There’s a scab for Lucy. She’s trying to make amends with the situation the best she can.”

And it sounds like things will only get more complicated with the show’s upcoming Valentine’s Day episode. “Tim and Lucy find themselves in a very tricky situation…a moment,” Winter previews. “And again, like I said, these two have never stopped caring about each other. So you put two people in a compromising, weird position, and feelings come out. Maybe a little bit of their thoughts come out…I can tease that you’re going to get a moment where they have to check themselves.”

In the new season’s fifth episode, titled “Til Death” and airing Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 10/9c, the team searches for a second serial killer as Nyla struggles with the aftermath of being attacked/injected with a paralytic, as she and Angela investigated the abandoned building next to a psychiatric hospital. (Never a good idea.)

[Seth] Gabel pops up midway through the episode to kick off a multiple-episode arc as a vending machine supplier and person of interest named Glasser.

“I really loved his approach to his character, who has a little bit of a sweet edge to him as well,” [Mekia] Cox added. “I like that we come into this and it’s almost flirty.”

Almost being the operative word.

Q: The Rookie‘s Alexi Hawley said last year that we may get a UC storyline that involves both Lucy and Nyla. Is there anything that can be teased?

Quote

I followed up for you on that (old) interview, asking showrunner Hawley if Lucy, for one, would be going undercover in Season 7, and he affirmed, “No, not this season.” For one, “undercover episodes are tough, because how do you do something unexpected?” he noted. “In the traditional undercover episode, you go in deep and then something goes wrong and we’ve got to pull you out — and we’ve done a lot of those.” Plus, as you’ve seen, Lucy is now busy learning the TO ropes. “Undercover is still important to Lucy, but you see her step up to become a training officer, at least temporarily, so that’s a new challenge for her that we lean into.”

Melissa O'Neil Breaks Down Lucy's Feelings After Massive Chenford Development In The Rookie Season 7, Episode 6
By Rachel Foertsch  Published 1 day ago
https://screenrant.com/the-rookie-season-7-episode-6-melissa-oneil-interview/

Quote

ScreenRant: The first thing I'm curious about is if Lucy's wearing the necklace that Tim gave her.
Melissa O'Neil: She is wearing it at the gala. I asked Alexi specifically about that because the fans really pay attention, and they really pay attention to the jewelry choices because Lucy has received some significant pieces of jewelry that are tied to the story. And of course something precious given to her by Bradford is going to be very significant to us in this world.

Because I saw it in the script, I was like, “Hold on a minute. Why is she wearing this? What is this about?” because we don't exactly address it in the episode. Alexi told me that that was kind of her response to knowing that Bradford was bringing someone to the gala–that she was like, “I'm going to put on a really nice dress and I'm going to put on my necklace from him because I don't know who's coming.” I kind of love this sassy subtext that we never really address, but is there.
*  *  *
It's been seeming like Tim wants to mend their relationship, but does Lucy get that sense from him? Does she think that Tim wants to reconcile romantically?
Melissa O'Neil: I think that that's not what's important to her. A lot of what I inform Lucy's stuff [with] has to do with her in-story emotional intelligence. We know that Lucy's got a frigging degree in psychology. She’s spent a lot of time thinking about these things and analyzing herself as well. And I think a person's intention matters less than their actions, so whether or not he wants to reconcile is besides the point.

Is he going to do what needs to be done to do that? Is he going to have the conversation? Is he going to take accountability for what happened? I think that's important for her. In that moment in the hotel, I mean, I think that's a part of why she says, “We shouldn't.” She knows that look, she's very familiar with that look, and she's like, “No.”

So, with regards to that, I think it's very clear. But with regards to the overarching idea of their romantic reconciliation, I think she is waiting because he's the one that left. She's there, but I think she's probably too proud to say, “I want you back.” He already says, “I can't do this,” and I'm not sure Lucy would be someone to be like, “I know you said you don't want it, but how about now?” I don't think she's that kind of girl.
*  *  *
Melissa O'Neil: It's going to be interesting to see the consequences of this action that they've taken, how it affects them in their frequently path-crossing spaces at work, and how they'll navigate that inner tension. I like to think that they probably had a really good time and it's a nice reminder of everything that's sweet about them because they know that all of the other stuff works too.

Actually, everything about them seems to work. They work well. They're good teammates. They have, obviously, a really beautiful physical connection. When they do talk, it's very open and candid, but what's happening right now is a willingness and a repair that hasn't taken place.

I think it'll be really fun for the audience to see how they navigate the inner tension of the consequences of cracking the seal, what that means for their desire between the two of them, and the fact that they need to be professionals. And not only that they need to, but they can't help themselves but to be professionals. They're both good at their jobs and knowing how to check the personal stuff at the door… or are they?

‘The Rookie’: Melissa O’Neil Talks Surprise of Lucy as Training Officer & Seth’s Lies
Meredith Jacobs    February 15, 2025
https://www.tvinsider.com/1176294/the-rookie-lucy-training-officer-seth-lies-cancer-melissa-oneil/

Quote

“I have always felt that Lucy was a person who, perpetually, to a fault, gave people the benefit of the doubt and was always giving them chance after chance after chance,” O’Neil tells TV Insider as part of our Booked: The Rookie Aftershow. That’s not the case with her rookie, Seth (Patrick Keleher), whom she has caught in lies about his girlfriends.
*  *  *
Lucy did plan to talk to Grey (Richard T. Jones) about Seth … only for Seth to tell him right before that his cancer is back, but it was caught early and he can still work. O’Neil says that part of Lucy did wonder if he was lying about the cancer. “She feels like he’s lying, but how do you accuse someone of lying about having cancer without looking like an absolute off-the-rocker or insensitive human being? So it’s a wonderfully impossible situation, especially for a character like Lucy,” she explains.

Amidst these questions about Seth, Lucy is going to be putting her faith in him for an undercover assignment in the February 18 episode, “The Mickey.” O’Neil reveals the stakes of that are “a lot higher” than just trusting him to have her back.

“She’s trusting him to have somebody else’s back, not hers,” she previews. “It really elevates the stakes for their relationship and the consequences of his potential lying. If he is lying, it really just all of the tension starts ramping up because of that mission that she sets him onto.”

Lucy has been talking to Tim (Eric Winter), but after the exes hooked up on Valentine’s Day, O’Neil tells us she expects them to try to maintain some distance. Does that mean she won’t continue to turn to him about Seth?

“That’ll be the interesting thing,” notes O’Neil. “It’s leaning back onto the fact that they’re such good teammates and she trusts him implicitly as a mentor outside of it. That is the origin of their relationship. Even though she has never felt that his methods were maybe always pure, she has always respected his capacity and his opinion and his insight in these ways.” That part of their relationship remains the same.

It’s funny you should ask, given what the exes talk about in the wake of tonight’s downright harrowing, intense, wild, I had to pause it several times to catch my breath episode.
