Miles July 27, 2018 Share July 27, 2018 I missed this movie when it was in cinemas last year. This evening I saw it in an event open-air cinema, where they show popular films of the previous year. I had heard a lot of good things, but uh boy was I unprepared for the emotional rollercoaster I was in for. This is still very fresh for me and I just have to talk about it. To my surprise there wasn't a thread yet, so I'm making one. Hopefully other people here saw the movie, and feel like talking about it, even after such a long time. I really feel emotionally drained after this, but kinda in a good way, I guess. A woman in the cinema started crying pretty uncontrollably for minutes after the movie was over. I can't fault her for that. I certainly felt like doing the same. If I was a braver man I might have done so. That ending was a gutpunch, even if it should be happy and objectively is. It's nice to know that they will be together, probably for the rest of their lifes and they will be happy. But it's hard not knowing if the memories of their dreams will come back to them, now that they are together. In a weird way I need them to remember. I need them to know what they went through to get where they are now. I need them to know that they saved over 500 people from a gruesome death, by a hair, by giving it all they had, by putting all their energy into it and losing each other in the process again. That can't just not be part of their memories and their lifes and their relationship. It has to be. The stunning visuals and the great soundtrack of course help invoke those emotions. But the story and characters are just great on their own. The german voice cast was also simply amazing. You believed every emotion. I hope the english one was as well. The second I came home I ordered the Limited collector's edition and I usually don't even bu physical media, let alone collectors editions. I was that impressed with this movie. What did you guys think? 2 Link to comment

Like you, I had heard about this - a while after it had come and gone - but I finally checked it out from the library. And yeah - I was not prepared to get so emotionally invested. The tension/suspense at the climax was built up beautifully. I was also close to crying. I'm going to re-watch with the original Japanese. ------ BTW, there's going to be an Americanized, live-action remake of the film. To me it sounds like the remake will be leaning into the romance, which was only a small part of the original (IMHO). Link to comment
Schweedie February 28, 2019 Share February 28, 2019 Oh, I'm happy to find a thread for this! I saw this back when it was in cinemas and really, really enjoyed it. And yes, I bawled - I think it was partly the music, because the soundtrack is wonderful, but the film just hit those emotional notes really well. The one thing that bugged me later on was that wouldn't either of them have realised - spoiler, for anyone who hasn't seen it - that they were in a different time? Did neither of them see a newspaper with a date at any point, or anything like that? Wouldn't their phones show the correct date? But even so, I was okay with handwaving that because it made their realisation all the more a gut punch. 1 Link to comment
Trini September 18, 2020 Share September 18, 2020 (edited) Little update on the remake; a new director: 'Lee Isaac Chung To Direct' Quote Lee Isaac Chung will rewrite and direct Paramount, Bad Robot and Toho’s live-action adaptation of Your Name, the reimagined adaptation of the 2016 animated romantic fantasy drama film which was an instant classic in Japan. There is news from late last year that they attached a new director. I don't think I'll be watching anyway. I don't see the need to remake a perfect movie. It's not like they'll be able to catpure the stunning visuals or surpass anything else we've seen in the animated movie. Even though Hollywood doesn't understand it, Animation is not "lesser" than live action. In dreams you don't really notice these logical incosistencies and don't have a sense of time. At least that is my fanwank for it. Link to comment
Trini October 26, 2023 Share October 26, 2023 An interview with Genki Kawamura at Deadline gives a small update on the Hollywood remake: Quote DEADLINE: Lee Isaac Chung is currently adapting Your Name. How’s that process going? How involved are you? And how is the experience of working with Hollywood studios? KAWAMURA: I am currently working on the script with Carlos Lopez Estrada, director of Raya and the Last Dragon, along with Bad Robot and JJ Abrams. I am involved in this project as a producer. The progress is slow because of the pandemic and now, all the strikes, but it is moving forward steadily. I am participating as a “storyteller” as I always do, whether it is in Japan or in the U.S. I'm a little confused, since the last news before this was that Chung was off the project, but I guess he's back?? Or did Deadline get that detail wrong? In any case, Estrada is a new name. Link to comment
