13 Reasons Why vs Real Life

Even though some of the things that happened on this show were really a bit far fetched, there were plenty of things that were so real they took me back to experiences I had as a teenager, which was a long freaking time ago (late 80's early 90's).  It is sad that some of these same issues still happen.

1.  I had a friend, like Hannah, that was completely innocent but went on a date with the wrong guy who then told everyone they had sex at the beginning of our Freshman year.  She was known as the "easy" girl from there forward and was practically assaulted every time  she went out with a guy after that.  Eventually she just stopped dating and really withdrew from social activities.  It was horrible and her parents ended up moving out of state our Junior year.  I'm not sure if that was a factor, but it was a major relief for her to be starting over.  She was a very nice girl who had (still has) trust issues big time after that.  That guy ruined her high school years.

2.  We had a coach like that idiot baseball coach.  Come to think of it he was the baseball coach at our school too.  His players were everything and could do no wrong.  I had him for keyboarding and most of his players were in my class.  They came and went as they pleased and he seemed more intent on being their friend and fitting in than being a teacher.

3.  Another friend of mine reminded me of a different side of Hannah.  I think she really wanted to be popular.  My niece was all "why does she keep going to those same idiots?"  Those idiots were popular and that's what she wanted.  She wasn't going to settle on being one of the crowd IMHO.  I remember Sky saying something like "She ignored me" when Clay asked her what did Hannah ever do to her.  There were people she could have been friends with I bet, but they weren't "those" people.  I think the fact that she was a bully in her last school kind of cements that.

A good friend of mine through middle school and the beginning of high school was always just miserable because she wasn't part of the popular people.  I mean we would hang out with them, but we weren't inner circle type people, and I really didn't want to be.  It was everything to this girl, and no matter what she had to do she constantly tried to be part of that circle and was upset when it didn't work out.  It didn't matter that she had great loyal friends - she always wanted to be in that "in" crowd.

I'm sure I'll think of more, but here's a start.  What parts of the show can you relate to your high school experience?

I think for me that shows why Hannah and Clay would never be a couple. I think Hannah genuinely liked Clay, but he was safe, nice and reliable but not popular.
